See Now, Buy Now: The SeaVees California Special Sneakers Are Your New Favorite Sneakers

A new classic — terrific SeaVees sneakers to take you into fall.

There comes a time in  every guy’s life when he needs to take stock of those critical men’s style essentials he’s got handy for the changing seasons, particularly on the footwear front. So, as we move from summer toward early fall, that’s where the brand-new, super-stylish SeaVees California Special Sneakers are going to help out. Named for a special edition of the Ford Mustang that was only sold to residents of California, they’re a classic, stylish pair of high-top sneakers from the laidback style purveyors at SeaVees, and that’s as good as it gets for stepping from summer into fall. Whether you wear the SeaVees California Special to the office (it can be done!) or to the bar, you’re in good hands.

SHOP: SeaVees California Special via Huckberry

My personal favorite from the collection — one of four versatile color options.

Available in Ecru Pig Suede (your humble author’s personal favorite), as well as the sleek Perforated Falcon Suede and the dressier Night Pig Suede, these are just the right type of high-top sneakers to start wearing now, and then keep wearing come fall. The Ecru Pig Suede variety in particuar is perfectly versatile, easy to wear right now with olive chinos and a grey slub T-shirt — and then still fitting to pair with dark indigo denim, a grey crewneck sweater and a classic Oxford shirt later on this season. Made with flat eyelets and cotton laces, the construction on the SeaVees California Special is quite solid. That’s great news, because I’d imagine you’re going to want to wear these comfortable high-top kicks as much as you can. Heck, you should even feel free to wear the SeaVees California Special to something as laidback as a football tailgate — they’re that low-key and versatile. And for pairing with easygoing weekend style staples — think tailored sweatpants and a slub cotton henley — there’s really no better footwear option than the  SeaVees California Special.

Are you ready to make the transition into fall yet? What do you think of these classic sneakers?

See Now, Buy Now: Levi’s 501 Jeans Are The Classic Jeans You Need Now

You can’t argue with these classic jeans, especially in a timeless, versatile dark wash.

There are menswear staples that are instantly recognizable and easily wearable — take it from a brand that modernized the blue jean as we know it today, Levi’s. And the pair of jeans that remain a cultural icon after decades? That’d be the Levi’s 501, a perfect pair of classic men’s denim that you can buy right now, and then wear for … heck, forever. In any season, in any weather … these are THE jeans (arguably). That is to say, in the way of men’s style essentials that can work in August, September or any other month of the year, there really aren’t many — the chambray shirt and suede chukka boots come to mind, as does a pair of stylish men’s denim like the Levi’s 501, naturally.

It can certainly be tricky to get all the details right, but that’s what the Levi’s 501 have continually brought to the table. Among those details? The iconic button fly, a timeless fit and the Dark Stonewash finish that you’ll grow to love. Looking for some well-fitting men’s denim that can rack up some miles? Bingo.

Just one of the many details that make the Levi’s 501 worth buying.

On that note, let’s talk about the fit and versatility of the Levi’s 501, shall we? Unlike some pairs of stretch denim that tend to fit more like denim leggings (yikes!), the 501 from Levi’s are cut in a straight fit, with a regular leg opening. That means the Levi’s 501 are at their best when worn with equally classic footwear — think durable high-top Converse sneakers or rugged Red Wing Heritage leather boots. That timeless design also makes ’em an easy pair of denim to wear in different seasons. The Levi’s 501 are as at home with a heather grey pocket tee and those aforementioned high-tops as they are with a grey crewneck sweater and yes, Red Wing Heritage leather boots come fall and winter. Did we mention the part about the classic fit? The rich Dark Stonewash finish? And the excellent price (just $59.50 via the Levi’s site)? Ahh, OK. Got it. Happy shopping!

Planning on buying the Levi’s 501? How are you planning on styling ’em?  Join us over at The Style Guide Facebook page to talk shop.

Style Pick of the Week: Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley

The tough henley to wear through early fall — on its own, or else layered up accordingly.

It’s never too early to think ahead when it comes to men’s style essentials, and thus, I humbly submit that the rugged Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley should certainly be on your shopping list — yes, even in mid-August.  Made in Los Angeles from 100 percent 5oz. cotton, this rugged men’s henley is the secret style weapon you didn’t know you needed for the season ahead. Or perhaps, if you read The Style Guide regularly, you already knew that you needed a stylish henley in your rotation … and yet, didn’t know where to get one. Folks, Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. is here to help. We’ve talked about the importance of a short-sleeve henley when it comes to rugged style in the depths of summer, and a tough long-sleeve henley like the one shown here does the exact thing as we look ahead to fall. What’s so great about the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley? Well, as we all know when it comes to menswear essentials, the simple things are sometimes the best. Take the tube knitting — that’s unique among henleys, meaning there’s no side seam here, only quality, durable cotton.  Yes, this is one stylish henley that’s made the right way.

Priced right at $64.98 — a darn good deal for a USA-made product — the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley is a new menswear classic in every sense of the word, from the closely cut construction (ideal for layering) to the use of mother-of-pearl buttons on the placket. That gives the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley a decidedly more dressy feel — it’s still quite casual, but you shouldn’t feel out of place wearing this slim long-sleeve henley with dark denim, rugged leather boots and a charcoal herringbone blazer as temperatures start to drop.  You can even make great use of the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley right now — it’s a natural pairing on its own with faded light wash denim, plus some lightweight leather boots. The great thing about a henley is the sort of rugged style appeal it gives even the most basic of outfits — in short, it’s a tough menswear staple that belongs in your rotation in the months ahead. Heck, you can — and should — get the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley as much air  time as possible. Take it for a spin with classic dark tan chinos and your favorite pair of high-top sneakers to head to your local bar this weekend. Yessir, the Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley  is as good as it gets — and then some.

Are you down with the durability and timeless style of the  Knickerbocker Mfg. Co. Long-Sleeve Henley? Give me a shout on Twitter if you agree!

See Now, Buy Now: The Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford Is A Daily Style Essential

A versatile Oxford shirt, shown here in one of four cool colors for early fall.

Pick a color, any color — with the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford, you’re getting a serious winner either way. It’s a classic Oxford shirt through and through, with the sort of styling touches and construction that you’d expect from a Style Guide favorite, made-in-America purveyors Flint and Tinder. If you follow along with us regularly here at the ole blog, you’ll know that we dig the work being done by the brand, from the rugged Flint and Tinder Bone Button Western Shirt to the essential fit & excellent styling potential of the Flint and Tinder Texas-Made Oxford. Given that long-running history of quality, it should come as no surprise that we’re all for you adding the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford to your rotation as soon as possible — particularly as August careens toward fall. The Garment-Dyed Oxford from Flint and Tinder is merely the latest men’s style essential worthy of your hard-earned dollars. It starts with the unique Picante color (one of four versatile color options) and carries right on through to the exceptional fabric with which the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford is made — as one might expect. We’re talking premium cotton that’s garment-dyed and washed for softness and comfort.

The Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford also features the exacting fit you need in a casual-yet-versatile shirt like this. That is to say, you can wear this Oxford shirt untucked with dark denim and classic suede chukka boots as readily as you can tuck it in and layer up with a tan herringbone blazer and wingtip boots for early fall. The rest of the details that you need in a classic Oxford shirt are there, too — the laidback buttondown collar, a chest pocket, a clean front placket.

So, all of the bases are certainly covered when it comes to the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford — heck, even the buttons are made in the U.S. Most importantly though, this is one shirt you can feel good about buying now, and then styling in plenty of ways through fall and winter. A grey crewneck sweater, tan chinos and brown leather chukka boots would pair well this fall with the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford, and more classic end-of-summer style combos should be in play, too (layer the Garment-Dyed Oxford from Flint and Tinder atop a slub tee, then add in light wash denim and a grey slub tee). To make a long story short: You need the Flint and Tinder Garment-Dyed Oxford in your wardrobe and on your back now.

See Now, Buy Now: Upgrade Your Wrist Game with the Rugged Hemel HFT20 Watch

A rugged timepiece that draws from military heritage with tremendous results.

If it’s a rugged, casual watch that you seek to round out your ever-growing timepiece collection, then you’re in luck today here on the blog. There are slim dress watches made for wearing with your best suit, there are durable running watches made for getting off the trail … and then, there are watches like the Hemel HFT20 Watch, which you could feasibly wear for every other style scenario you come across. The Hemel HFT20 should undoubtedly rank high on any list of the best men’s watches you come across — why’s that now, Beau? Allow me. The Hemel HFT20 is a recent addition to the stellar casual watch collection found at Huckberry, and with good reason. Perhaps it’s the bold, military-inspired design of the HFT20, which takes its styling cues from the Type 20 Chronograph (that would be the watch worn in part by the French Air Force).

Perhaps it’s the mecha-quartz technology of the Hemel HFT20 , taking the no-frills approach of a quartz watch, merged with details like a sweeping second hand — found in mechanical movements. Or maybe, just maybe … it’s the simple fact that the Hemel HFT20 just looks darn good when worn with menswear essentials. This is the sort of watch you can throw on and … kind of forget about. It looks great, it gets the job done, and it’s highly, highly versatile.

So, based on the rugged good looks of the Hemel HFT20, let’s turn our attention toward said menswear essentials. A bold-yet-subtly stylish watch like the HFT20 , what with its rich, heavy-duty leather strap and 42mm diameter, calls for outfits that are equally tough and yet versatile. Think a classic chambray shirt, paired with dark indigo denim and your new favorite chukka boots. Add a grey crewneck sweater, and you’re set for fall. Or, wear the HFT20  with a rugged short-sleeve henley and tan chino shorts to hit up your favorite brewpub patio this summer. Heck, the Hemel HFT20 would work as an admirable business-travel watch, too. I’m thinking a lightweight navy cotton blazer, a classic Oxford shirt, tan chinos and stylish chukka boots. Bingo, bango … bongo? Yessir, the Hemel HFT20 is the underrated, endlessly versatile, tremendously well-designed watch you need on your wrist for August and well beyond.

Got questions on how to style the Hemel HFT20? Join us over at The Style Guide Facebook page.

Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Presidio Jacket in Cognac

The stylish leather jacket you need in your wardrobe this fall. Is it any wonder it comes from Taylor Stitch?

If you take one spin through the pages of The Style Guide, you’ll discover quickly that we sure do love Taylor Stitch. The California-based brand makes darn near everything that stylish guys (like yourself!) need when it comes to menswear essentials, from the Taylor Stitch California Shirt to the Rangeley Sweater to the Jack Short-Sleeve Shirt to, well, the Presidio Jacket as seen at the top of the page.

It can be argued with ease that every guy needs a stylish leather jacket in their wardrobe, particularly as the calendar creeps toward fall. Seriously: The right leather jacket can team with dark denim, rugged chambray shirting, leather boots … you name it. And y’know what’s the even better news? If you pre-fund the absurdly stylish Taylor Stitch Presidio Jacket right now, that’s exactly when you’ll receive it (October or November, to be specific). What else is there to love about the Presidio Jacket? Plenty, my friends. Plenty. For starters, your new favorite leather jacket is handmade in San Francisco in partnership with Golden Bear — you might recognize the lauded, classic outerwear brand from their work on the amazing Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket. So, the Presidio Jacket has that going for it.

The best construction and materials money can buy — an absurdly great jacket.

The leather is custom tanned, making for a meticulous and careful process that results in one heck of a jacket. The 3oz. Cognac leather used to make the Presidio Jacket results in a distinctive, classic piece of outerwear that’s going to age wonderfully. It’s also cut in a classic bomber jacket silhouette, all the better for wearing with everything from a classic white Oxford and olive chinos to a heather grey henley and black denim. Does that make it one of the best leather jackets for men? Heck, it just might. The lining — made of nylon and grey wool — will keep you toasty without stifling you on chilly fall days, while the welt handwarmer pockets are lined in cotton flannel for even more warmth. Yessir, the Presidio Jacket has a ton going for it, absolutely. It’s simply an absurdly beautiful and classic jacket — the Presidio Jacket is surely going on my fall wish list. And the great thing about it? You’re getting the Presidio Jacket for quite the deal ($200 off the regular price of $998). Again, it’s got classic versatility built right in, too. From an indigo denim shirt and dark blue jeans to a white Oxford, a knit tie and khaki chinos, the Presidio Jacket is destined — destined, I tell you — to become a new menswear essential for you. Easy as that.

Are you taking a chance on pre-funding the Presidio Jacket now? How would you style this thing?

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Chukka Boots, MZ Skincare and the Best Men’s Chinos

It’s Friday — let’s talk shop! If I were you, I’d be looking forward to knocking back a cold one this weekend — it’s still a full-on heat wave out there, after all! Oh, and if you’re looking for a new brew to try — or at least, new beer-related gear to wear — you’d do very well to check out our latest edition of The List. It spotlights everything from the much-coveted Huckberry x Mikkeller Collection (featuring plenty of craft beer-themed garb!) to the excellent Bone Button Western Shirt from Flint and Tinder. Wearing your new favorite shirt while sipping on a new favorite beer? That’s as good as it gets. What’s on your agenda this weekend? I’m back in Brooklyn following two wonderful, lovely weekends on the road back in Pure Michigan (as you can perhaps tell by my Instagram account!). I took the chance to explore Ann Arbor last weekend, stopping at the terrific Shinola store downtown and enjoying some delicious pizza at the terrific Jolly Pumpkin Cafe and Brewery — I had the Bam Biere, a refreshing Sour Farmhouse Ale made with that signature Jolly Pumpkin touch. Both of those spots are surely worth a visit if you find yourself in the area! Which reminds me … if you’ve got a brewpub visit of your own coming this weekend, you’ll want to outfit yourself accordingly. Check out this rugged, casual #OOTD to start, then read on for a few shopping suggestions — enjoy yourself out there!

  • With their timeless silhouette and excellent durability, chukka boots are a style that’s easy to wear with practically, well, anything. I like to wear my classic suede chukka boots with rugged pieces like a slub tee and black denim, or else with an easygoing navy blazer and a light blue Oxford. How about you? Oh, and as to which ones you should be buying — read my picks for the best men’s chukka boots via The Manual!
  • I’m always on the lookout for subtle grooming upgrades that can make a big difference in terms of your daily look. I’ve lately added another product to my nightly routine, one I think you’d do well to pick up for yourself: The Hydra-Bright Golden Eye Treatment Mask from MZ Skin. They feature Nano Gold particles and are designed to minimize puffiness and fine lines — and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Simply put them under your eyes for 15 minutes.
