Billykirk review

One of the coolest leather wallets around, now at an even better price.

Keep in mind that this handsome leather wallet is just one of the standout gear and everyday carry picks you can snag from the brand, seeing as they take great care in crafting everything from slim leather belts to one of the best weekender bags for men. However, it’s the Billykirk No. 397 Slim Card Case that might be the most useful if you or someone you know needs a well-priced wallet upgrade in time for the holiday season. Don’t forget Billykirk’s valet trays, tote bags and plenty more, either. And once again, know that it’s all 35 percent off with the code BLACKFRIDAY35. Style Pick of the Week: Billykirk Standard Issue East-West Tote Bag

The best tote bag to haul your summer gear? Quite possibly.

The days, in these strange and trying times, keep on rolling by, and *checks notes* it’s Saturday, so it’s time for yet another Style Pick of the Week covering the very best men’s gear. Well, one of the best men’s gear picks — in this case, it’s an everyday carry essential from the fine folks at New Jersey-based Billykirk. For a bit more than 20 years now, Billykirk‘s Chris and Kirk Bray have been making some of the most rugged goods on the planet, and doing it all in America — that’s where the new Billykirk Standard Issue Tote Bag enters the equation. The No. 540 Standard Issue Tote is a staple of the brand, but it gets a seriously cool and summer-centric update via the bright, fun River Yellow color as seen above (and it also now comes in Teal). Your summer travel plans might look a heck of a lot different — schlepping your gear a few yards to your firepit versus driving cross-coutry, for instance, but one of the best men’s tote bags can still add some excellent utility to your arsenal of everyday carry essentials.

Picture this: You’re gearing up for a summer weekend bonfire at home. You’re wearing your favorite summer sneakers and maybe some light wash jeans. You’ve got your cooler but you need to haul the rest of your gear out to said firepit. And you’re using this rugged tote bag. That’s but one use case, though — this tough and stylish tote bag is going to come in plenty handy elsewhere, too.

SHOP: The Billykirk Standard Issue East-West Tote Bag

A dependable tote bag could become a new summer style essentials.

A great tote bag like this one from Billykirk is assuredly worth adding to your list of summer gear, especially when it’s made from 10 oz. waxed cotton canvas — perfect for breezy, dewy summer mornings and chilly nights. And you needn’t worry about the durability of this thing, given that the Billykirk Standard Issue Tote Bag also features mil-spec nylon webbing and a full-grain leather bottom. It’s a seriously well-designed tote bag and includes an open main compartment and three interior organization compartments, too (to go along with two exterior pockets). Those are all critical when it comes to storing your everyday carry essentials or hauling around your favorite growler.  Heck, the No. 540 Standard Issue Tote is even sized to fit up to a 15″ laptop, so you can get some work done at your local cafe (when it reopens, that is). So, it’s clear that this new, rugged tote bag belongs on your list of summer style essentials — right? That’s a surefire “Yes” from me. Check it out at Billykirk, and feel free to hit me up on Twitter for more of my thoughts on the brand.

Style Pick of the Week: Billykirk No. 478 Khaki Carryall

The classic weekender bag to (hopefully) take on your next trip.

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s Memorial Day weekend (traditionally a very travel-heavy weekend!) or maybe it’s the fact that we’re all getting a bit stir-crazy these past few weeks, but it just feels like the right time to shop for one of the best weekender bags, does it not? And the rugged weekender bag in question is going to more than get the job done when it comes time to hit the road again: We’re talking today about the Billykirk No. 478 Khaki Carryall, a classic weekender bag that just so happens to fit right in with the rest of Billykirk’s American-made leather goods. You’ve heard about the brand on the blog before, to be sure, and it’s high time you got acquainted with them if you’ve never picked up some made-in-America gear from the New Jersey-based brand. The Billykirk No. 479 Khaki Carryall is a recent addition to the Billykirk line, one that goes above and beyond what you’d expect from your traditional weekender bag. To wit: If you’ve been packing for weekend trips or overnight jaunts using a logo duffel or an athletic-minded gym bag, those days are over. This stylish weekender bag is well-made, durably designed and made to be packed up, tossed in the back of your ride, and then not fretted over. The rugged 20oz. waxed canvas and full-grain vegetable-tanned leather can certainly take a beating, no matter how overstuffed your car is.

The rugged carrying potential and functionality you need from Billykirk.

Now, this all might seem like pure fantasy at this point given, well, *gestures broadly at everything* … but believe me, it’ll still pay off to invest in advance in one of the best weekender bags for men right now. If anything, it’ll be a great reminder to plan out the first trip properly (and then pack accordingly). And assuredly, one of the best weekender bags is going to provide plenty of long-term travel potential and style — just look at how well-made this travel bag happens to be, for starters. It’s finished off with nickel-plated brass hardware, and critically, it’s also water-resistant. Yes indeed, this rugged weekender bag isn’t like anything you’ve owned previously (is it?). Where will this bag take you? Upstate? To the coast? On an inland adventure? The possibilities really are endless when you pick up an investment-worthy travel bag, that much I know to be true. See Now, Buy Now: This Billykirk Carryall Is the Best Duffle Bag for Spring and Summer

A rugged, exceedingly well-made carryall bag for your next spring adventure.

Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat: Billykirk, out of New Jersey, is making some of the best leather goods on the planet right now … period. It’s as simple as that. OK, not quite. The Billykirk No. 480 Carryall actually is the end result of a heck of a lot of work, and that makes it one of the best travel bags you’re going to stumble across for a long, long time (even though we’ll be off the road for a while, it’s still plenty useful). It’s not the first time we’ll be talking about Billykirk travel bags on the site, either. Now, it might seem counterintuitive to be shopping for one of the best duffle bags right now — it’s a strange and trying time we live in, and many a travel plan has been changed or scrapped. But rest assured, there will come a time once again when you’ll need to load up your rugged duffle bag and hit the road. When that time arrives … there’s no better bag to meet the dual challenge of hauling your everyday carry essentials and looking stylish as heck than the Billykirk No. 480 Carryall. It all starts with the quality material you’ve come to expect from a brand that’s been making some of the finest leather goods for enterprising, stylish gentlemen (like yourself!) for more than 20 years (21, in fact). Materials like rugged waxed duck canvas make up a large part of the handsome and rugged Billykirk No. 480 Carryall, and it only gets better from there.

SHOP: The Billykirk No. 480 Carryall

Rugged detailing and expert construction set this Billykirk carryall apart from the pack.

The thing with a well-made yet tough travel bag like this fine number from Billykirk is that every last detail is considered, right down to the nickel-plated brass hardware for extra durability on long trips. What that means is you can load up this essential travel bag with all your must-have getaway favorites, from a classic chambray shirt to slim blue denim to rugged leather boots. Even better? The Billykirk No. 480 Carryall is carry-on approved — when the time comes — and features space for a 15″ laptop (plus, again, plenty of your favorite everyday carry essentials). In the interim, it’d work extremely well as a tool bag around the house. As with any great travel bag, the waxed canvas and bridle leather are going to get better with age and with more adventures. It might seem as if travel is a long ways off right now — and it is! — but when it’s high time to hit the road, you’ve found your new favorite travel bag, easily.

The Friday Read: Billykirk Leather Goods, New GREATS Sneakers & Banana Republic

A soft, lightweight flannel shirt to layer up with this weekend.

There’s really no time like the present — as we stand on the edge of another winter weekend — for you to pick up your new favorite flannel shirt. The right flannel shirt, as in the soft and dependable Lisboa Porto Shirt, is wearable all weekend long, from coffee to cocktails — and it’s the kind of easygoing, classic flannel shirt you can even wear around the house as you lounge around and click through today’s Friday Read. What exactly do we have going in today’s edition? Plenty, folks, including potentially your new favorite sneakers (if you’re not dealing with absurd amounts of snow right now). We’ll get to the rest in a moment, but it’s pretty wild to be nearing the end of February — on that note, I’m starting to get excited for an early March trek to Seattle (a new city for me!) that I’ve got planned.

5.11 Tactical

I’ll be staying at the always-excellent Ace Hotel, and of course, there’s quite the reason behind the trip: Legendary NYC rockers The Strokes (whom I had the honor of seeing on New Year’s Eve in Brooklyn) are making a triumphant return to the stage in advance of the April release of their new album, fittingly titled “The New Abnormal.” That being said, I’m already starting to prep for the trip, which I plan to continue this weekend as I enjoy some delicious coffee and spin my “Room On Fire” vinyl. Naturally, I’ll also be listening on repeat to the band’s new single, “At The Door,” a slow, synth-driven crooner with moody atmospherics — it’s a change of pace from the classics, and I love it all the same. OK, let’s pivot from indie rock back to menswear, shall we? Here’s today’s Friday Read — enjoy!

Shop Western Rise Now

  • What better way to start the weekend than with some new leather boots? I’m a big fan of FRYE leather boots, and would certainly recommend you check out the brand as winter closes out — consider them an underrated addition (for a great deal, at that) to your wardrobe as we wrap up February.
  • I mentioned above that we’d dig into some new sneakers in advance of early (early) spring, and those sneakers are in fact here — they’re the stylish, minimal and premium GREATS Court Sneakers, and I dug into what makes them so essential for GearMoose, per tradition. They’re affordable given the use of Italian leather, and they’ll wear extremely with everything from slim tan chinos and a rugged henley to a classic Oxford shirt and slim denim.
  • Speaking of slim denim, get a load of this: The good folks at Banana Republic are really changing the denim game, crafting slim blue jeans with 99 percent less water (yes, 99 percent!) thanks to its new Dry Indigo line — and of course, I wrote all about your new favorite denim over at The Manual. It’s all about sustainability and style in 2020, so you can’t go wrong.
  • If you’ve taken the time to curate a collection of thoughtful everyday carry essentials — as every stylish guy should do — then it only makes sense that you pick up the proper place to store them when you’re off the road, yes? A stylish valet tray is the ticket in that regard, and helpfully, I wrote about Billykirk Bronco Valet Tray for GearMoose. Best get to shopping now!

New Spring Arrivals

I often talk about the type of style essentials you can consistently wear day in and day out, year in and year out — and there’s perhaps no rugged base layer more suited to right now than a classic henley. With all that being said, I’m going to point you toward my guide on how to wear a henley right now, featuring plenty of gear picks you know and love. If you have questions on how to style it, or how to rock any of your other favorite winter style essentials, you know what to do: Reach out to me on Twitter. Cheers to the weekend!

#OOTD: Wear Your New Denim Trucker Jacket This Way for Fall

Now that we’re truly getting into fall — at least, on the calendar — it’s time to break out a rugged denim trucker jacket, I’d wager.  Just as a cotton denim jacket works in the spring and summer, it’s a surprisingly easy-to-wear fall layering essential — as you’ll see today. The right denim trucker jacket is made with quality fabric and the type of construction that’ll break in over time, so it’ll work from September into November when worn properly. And it’s all the better that Flint and Tinder is making the tough denim trucker jacket you need for all your seasonal style scenarios. From a tailgate to a day trip to a brewery tour — gotta love those brewery tours — the deep indigo trucker jacket you see below brings comfort, versatility and style in sapdes.  And I think you’re going to like the way we’ve styled it, from classic suede chukkas all the way through to an investment-worthy watch. Let me know what you think of today’s #OOTD in the comments or over on The Style Guide Facebook page. With no further delay, let’s get ready for fall!

When worn with rich green trousers and a striped shirt, a denim trucker jacket can be a fall layering essential.

The Trucker Jacket: Flint and Tinder Stretch Denim Trucker Jacket, $158 — As seen recently in our See Now, Buy Now series, this Flint and Tinder trucker jacket features a crisp indigo color, comfortable fabric and terrific construction.

The Shirt: Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt in Heather Grey, $138 — Although a bit pricey, this Life/After/Denim shirt features yarn-dyed cotton and a neat, neutral color palette — plus, those stripes are a neat design touch.  I have a feeling you’ll get a lot of wear this season out of the Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt.

The Pants: Bridge and Burn Polk Pants in Deep Forest, $108 –Early fall is a great time to start working dark, rich colors into your wardrobe — the Bridge and Burn Polk Pants are an excellent jumping-off point.

The Boots: Astorflex Greenflex Rough Boots, $134.98 — Want a pair of classic suede chukkas? The well-constructed Astorflex Greenflex Rough Boots feature a sturdy sole, visually interesting texture and a color that nicely offsets the navy striped Life/After/Denim shirt and the deep indigo of the Flint and Tinder trucker jacket.

The Socks: Anonymous-ism Tweed Nep Crew Socks, $30Anoynmous-ism is known for its ridiculously well-made, stylish men’s socks — the sharp navy color of these tweed socks is fall style at its best, with comfort thrown in for good measure.

The Belt: Line of Trade Veg-Tanned Leather Belt in Auburn, $55 ($40 When Signing Up for Bespoke Post) — As we always say at The Style Guide, don’t sleep on stylish accessories  — this durable leather belt is a fall-ready way to, well, hold up your pants in style.

The Watch: Huckberry Lum-Tec B31 Bronze Automatic Watch, $899.99— We told you we’d get to an investment-worthy watch, right? The incredibly durable, striking Huckberry Lum-Tec B31 is that very watch.

The Everyday Carry: Billykirk Small Carryall, $238.98— With its blend of remarkable craftsmanship and eye-catching looks, the Billykirk Small Carryall is a stylish everyday bag for fall weekend day trips or bar crawls.

I hope today’s #OOTD gives you a few ideas when it comes to how to wear a denim trucker jacket this fall.  It’s a classic silhouette made all the better by the fact that Flint and Tinder crafts its Stretch Denim Trucker Jacket with quality and versatility in mind — that makes it the ideal outerwear piece atop the Life/After/Denim Academy Shirt.  And in a deep shade of green, the Bridge and Burn Polk Pants  are a unique way to nod toward the start of fall — you can wear the Polk Pants into early winter, too. If you don’t yet have a pair of rugged leather chukka boots in your closet, grab the Astorflex Greenflex Rough Boots — the tread sole and fall-appropriate color make them a seasonal footwear essential, surely.

As I always say, stylish accessories are key; in that regard, Anoynmous-ism is going to be a terrific bet when it comes to stylish men’s socks, while the Line of Trade Veg-Tanned Leather Belt is a richly crafted belt for daily wear. On the watch front, the Huckberry Lum-Tec B31 is absolutely the ideal watch to complement a tough denim trucker jacket — it’s investment-worthy and made with rugged good looks.  Last but not least — what would your daily carry be without  a stylish everyday bag  like the Billykirk Small Carryall? Hopefully, we accounted for all the men’s style essentials you might need in the season ahead.
Happy shopping, enjoy the season and stay stylish!

That bag you’re packing up for your next getaway — is it one of the best men’s weekender bags for a road trip? No? You’re not sure? Don’t worry — it’s taken care of. A stylish weekender bag is the lofty subject we’ll tackle in today’s latest Online Shopping Picks entry — and I think you’re going to like the results.  As we so often talk about here on The Style Guide, developing great style really is the sum of a lot of moving parts. From the stylish  sneakers on your feet to that slim short-sleeve shirt hanging in your closet, looking and feeling great comes down to the details — and that’s certainly the case when it comes to the bag you’re bringing with you on your next road trip.
Florsheim
If the goal is to get out of town in style, you’re going to want a functional, durable weekender bag that looks just as great as it performs. We’re talking about a tough weekender bag that can go from the trunk of your car to the overhead bin to the floor of your rustic, refined boutique hotel without missing a beat. The right bag has got good looks, easy utility and investment-level quality in spades. And as to the below options? Well, I’d say that each of them certainly pass muster. Chime in on Twitter with any thoughts on this list of the best men’s weekender bags, and follow me on Instagram to see how I’m packing in style this summer.

#1. Nisolo Leon Weekender — $397.98

Relatively rare all-leather construction, excellent looks and an agreeable price.

Is the Nisolo Leon Weekender pricey? Yes. Is it a Style Guide favorite for its combination of rugged good looks and smart craftsmanship? That’s also a definitive “Yes.” An all-leather weekender like the Leon Weekender is a pretty rare find these days, particularly with a price tag that’s not too outrageous. Think of this as a stylish weekender bag that’ll look just as handsome with a tailored suit on a business trip as it will with a chambray shirt and chinos on a casual weekend getaway.

#2. Billykirk Large Sport Carryall — $251.98

Billykirk

The rugged ability to serve as both a gym bag and a weekender bag — you should expect nothing less from Billykirk.

Leave it to Billykirk to make a weekender/gym bag that works twice as hard as you’d expect. In one instance, the Large Sport Carryall is a uniquely stylish way to lug your favorite gym gear to and from a morning workout. And the next day, it could reliably serve as a durable weekender bag for an upstate trip. With its use of Cordura material and Mil-Spec hardware — not to mention sturdy, USA-made construction — picking up the Large Sport Carryall is almost like getting two bags for the price of one.

Timex

#3. Bespoke Post Weekender Box — $45

$45 for the Bespoke Post Weekender Box? Too good to be true, right? Wrong.

That price above isn’t a typo. You really can get the Bespoke Post Weekender Box for just $45 (when you sign up for Bespoke Post, that is). In all seriousness, why on Earth wouldn’t you want to sign up for Bespoke Post when the result is a bag like the weekender shown here? Available in a range of colors and made from what the brand calls “thick and capable canvas,” it’s the type of bag that’ll only get better with age — and I’m sure you’ll reach for it time and again. Yes indeed, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box might be the smartest purchase you’ll make this summer.

Nautica

#4. Topo Designs Mountain Duffel — $229

The Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is all business — sleek, no-nonsense and definitely very functional.

If you consider yourself a guy who favors more minimal, functional style and performance rather than bright, loud colors when shopping for a stylish weekender bag, the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is the bag for you. It’s water-resistant right down to the YKK zippers, and it offers handy design touches like a padded base and side panels (all the better to keep your gear safe). In a sleek black color, it’s a low-key way to upgrade your weekender bag — it’s more than ready for camping trips, hikes or day trips.

#5. Filson Small Duffel — $297

Filson

A richly crafted, durable and timeless bag from Filson — that’s all you can ask for, really.

Leave it to the lauded gear makers at Filson to continually deliver on classic pieces that stand the test of time. While not quite as large in size as some of the other options on this list, the Filson Small Duffel is every bit as deserving of a spot here. It starts with the brand’s attention to detail and namely, Filson‘s own rugged, functional, abrasion-resistant twill. Other helpful design touches — such as the tough bridle leather straps and solid brass zipper — help make this bag an investment-worthy classic.
Ben Sherman

Honorable Mention: Bradley Mountain Utility Bag — $159

A carryall that can also serve as a weekender bag — that’s the way it’s done, folks.

There are simply far too many options out there in terms of stylish weekender bags to end this list at just five. It was a tough call, but the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag just barely missed the cut here (Editor’s note: Catch a full write-up on this bag in our Style Pick of the Week series). Able to be fashioned into a carryall for just about anything you can think of — including your favorite summer gear — the Utility Bag is also the type of bag that could reliably haul enough clothes for a weekend away.  The Bradley Mountain Utility Bag features rugged good looks and the sort of durability that you only get from using a custom oiled and waxed leather construction. That is to say, it’s a one-of-a-kind bag that you need in your summer travel arsenal … now.

END. Clothing

In summary: You need — like, need — at least one of the best men’s weekender bags in your rotation for the months ahead. Whether you reach for a two-in-one bag like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag or the handsome, durable  Large Sport Carryall from Billykirk is entirely up to you — either one would be a wise move. And a sturdy weekender bag from a heritage brand like  Filson provides both instantly recognizable looks and classic style. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can’t go wrong with a minimally designed number like the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel. And in terms of looks, quality and affordability? Well, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box is a surefire winner, available in a diverse range of colors and geared to go anywhere you can dream up. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best weekender bags below — and of course, I’m reachable at all hours on The Style Guide Facebook page.

Thanks for reading — and stay stylish!

#OOTD: The Upgraded Way to Wear a T-Shirt This Summer

Who doesn’t love breaking out a comfortable, slim-fitting and stylish T-shirt in the summer months? It’s an underrated pleasure in the men’s style world to shed extra layers and simply wear a great tee through warm summer days and into the evening. But what if you want a new, upgraded way to wear a T-shirt this summer? Something that’s at once laidback and yet refined, comfortable to wear and yet sharp? Dare I say it: A #menswear ensemble that works at happy hour and in the hours leading up to it? Indeed, an ensemble that blends a bold T-shirt with … a tailored summer suit fit for the office? That’s where today’s #OOTD is taking us. We’re shaking it up with dressy leather sneakers, a handsome leather watch and a durable, investment-worthy bag for your everyday carry. Make no mistake, the below outfit is quite bold if you’re normally a regular suit-shirt-tie guy. That’s why it pays to keep in mind the versatility of the below suit — and the below Nautica T-shirt. As you’ll see, you can mix and match that Taylor Stitch suit with casual pieces — like a slim chambray shirt — in other looks. And you can even ditch the jacket and simply pair the slim linen suit trousers with the T-shirt. But enough idle chitchat — check out the full outfit below, follow me on Instagram for styling tips galore and enjoy a pleasant summer filled with plenty of stylish suit-wearing.

Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit

A head-turning T-shirt worn in a head-turning way — with rich leather sneakers and a lightweight, versatile summer suit via Taylor Stitch.

The T-Shirt: Nautica Color Block T-Shirt, $29.50 — It’s all got to start with a well-made, slightly bold T-shirt — right? This Nautica T-shirt makes use of strong colorblocking — easy to wear on its own or under the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit.

The Suit Jacket: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Linen Jacket in Charcoal, $278 — That ties nicely into my next point here — the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit is slim-fitting, very well-made and ready for summer layering — even with a T-shirt.

Timex

The Suit Trousers: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Linen Trousers in Charcoal, $178  — Just as with the Telegraph Suit Jacket, the  Taylor Stitch Telegraph Linen Trousers are handsome, tailored and versatile — so much so that you could even ditch the jacket and just wear the colorblocked tee and trousers individually.

The Sneakers: Florsheim Forward Lo Lace-up, $99.99 Sneakers and a tee with a suit? That’s how we’re doing it this summer. These handsome Florsheim sneakers are crafted from rich leather and almost wear more like dress shoes or loafers.

The Socks: Arvin Goods No-Show Socks (Three-pack), $30 – Underneath the tailored hem of your Taylor Stitch Telegraph Linen Trousers, you’re going to want easily wearable no-show socks — like the Arvin Goods No-Show Socks —  to team up with those leather sneakers. Who’s with me?

Greats

The Watch: Electric California Carroway Leather Watch, $225 — I would hope you recognize the Electric California brand from my Memorial Day trip to Florida— if not, acquaint yourself accordingly with this remarkably crisp and suit-friendly watch.

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses, $109.98 — Because this outfit is fit for all-day wear, sharp and stylish sunglasses are in order. Ditch the athletic-inspired frames and reach for the striking Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Bag: Billykirk Small Carryall, $279.98 —  Don’t let that price tag scare you off — the Billykirk Small Carryall is as investment-worthy and versatile of an everyday carry piece as it gets; plus, its design means you won’t be slinging a backpack or messenger bag over the shoulders of your carefully constructed Telegraph Suit Jacket.

That brings today’s #OOTD to a close, Style Guide fans. If you thought a colorblock tee could only be worn casually, let’s hope you’re thinking differently now. The key comes in choosing a suit in a modern-fitting silhouette with casual, summer-friendly texture — that means the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit is your new best friend. Eye-catching leather sneakers from Florsheim are another seasonally appropriate way to play off the casual nature of the linen suit-and-tee pairing, and I’d wager you’ll be very pleased with the handsome design of the Electric California Carroway Leather Watch. Throw in essential everyday accessories — like the Billykirk Small Carryall  and the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses — and consider yourself set for work, happy hour and perhaps a patio nightcap at a rooftop bar. Who else is with me here? Good luck — let me know how you wear your T-shirt this summer via Twitter.

Stay stylish!

#OOTD: What to Wear to a Weekend Barbecue

You just got word that there’s a barbecue this weekend. Craft beer? Check. Burgers? You got it. But what #menswear to wear to man the grill or just hang out while sipping brews? We’ve got you covered today on The Style Guide — from A-to-Z, this is the place to be. It’s a little bit different than, say, dressing for a spring bar crawl — it’s more casual and requires gear that’s as stylish as it is suited to wear to play a little pick-up football. And you’ll want an extra layer in case the party runs late or it gets chilly out there. So, we’re keeping it cool and laidback with today’s #OOTD. You’ll recognize upgraded basics — from a classic bomber jacket to a sturdy striped tee — and you’ll recognize tried-and-true favorites like stylish brown leather sneakers and slim light wash jeans.  See? Comfortable, casual and classic style at its finest. But, I won’t spoil all the fun now. Check out the full set of #menswear picks below, chime in on Twitter and see how I style my daily ensembles over on Instagram (lotsa clothes on the ‘Gram, trust me). Enjoy, cheers and be sure to man the grill!

Outerknown

Start with a supremely high-quality tee and go from there with casual spring layers.

The T-Shirt: Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt, $62.98 —  Let’s start things off the right way — with a sustainably made and uniquely stylish striped pocket T-shirt. Yes indeed, the Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt is pricey, yes …. but ultimately worth it. Just don’t spill any mustard on it.

The Jacket: Outlier Supermarine Soft Core Bomber Jacket, $595 — First off, this jacket surely is pricey. But why go for a paper-thin bomber jacket from a fast-fashion retailer when you can get a comfortable, stylish and very performance-ready piece fit for spring breezes and beyond?

Florsheim
The Jacket: Flint and Tinder All-American Washed Jeans in Slim Tapered, $98  — I’m all for investing in quality — and that’s exactly what Flint and Tinder brings to the table. These slim-fit light wash jeans have a pleasing light wash that’s perfect for spring.
The Sneakers: Pikolinos Vic Trainers, $200 — While you might be tempted to break out the flip-flops, leave those in the closet this time. These beautifully crafted leather sneakers feature everything from a rich brown colorway to cool and eye-catching stitching.

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Cinco de Mayo

Sidle up to the bar, folks! It’s time for a little Cinco de Mayo celebration — and the requisite #menswear to go with it, of course. Yes, the holiday to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory in the Battle of Puebla has turned into quite the occasion here in the U.S. (for better or worse). Seeing as it’s as great a time as any to hit up your first spring bar crawl, you might as well look stylish while doing it — right? We’re offering up picks today that harness the best of spring style — essential chino shorts, a versatile short-sleeve shirt and SeaVees slip-on sneakers that can go just about anywhere.  Just as with dressing for spring break or dressing for a road trip, the winning formula lies in upgrading your basic pieces and nailing the fit just right. Oh, and enjoying yourself along the way — that’s what it’s all about. Kick back, enjoy a Corona or a Tecate for me, and scroll through the below #menswear picks. Got any feedback for me? Hit me up over on Twitter. Bottoms up!

The Shirt: United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt — $68

United By Blue

Style that goes toward a good cause and looks excellent for Cinco de Mayo and beyond.

For style that’s at once more put-together than a T-shirt and yet more casual than your standard classic Oxford or dress shirt, reach for a slim chambray shirt — preferably the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. Made with sustainability in mind — your purchase helps the brand remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways — the mini-plus sign print is visually interesting, while the unique lighter blue color is a spring-appropriate style move. Yes indeed, this shirt is made for a few patio brews.

The  Shorts: Katin Patio Shorts — $49.98

Katin

Your go-to shorts for having a few spring brews — especially on Cinco de Mayo.

The prime function of the Katin Patio Shorts is … practically in the product title itself. They’re made for spring and summer patio evenings galore. And they’re a heck of a steal for under $50 — just the shorts you need to wear for spring and summer, what with a versatile khaki color and a clean fit. Add in the drawstring waist and you’ve got a bit of hidden comfort — ideal for moving from bar to bar or manning the grill. Again, it’s tough to top that combination of price and solid looks.

The Sneakers: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $84.98

SeaVees

A sneaker that blends the ease of a slip-on with the style of a canvas lace-up.

See, told ya we’d be recommending some SeaVees slip-on sneakers for the occasion, did I not? The  SeaVees Huntington Middie is a unique option that’s A) Ideal for spring and B) Pleasingly versatile thanks to its slip-on construction and chukka-like cut. In short, it’s both perfect for beach trips and boardwalk strolls, along with a little Cinco de Mayo party action. The SeaVees Huntington Middie is definitely an upgrade over flip-flops, and you can wear ’em all summer long.

The Socks: Darn Tough No Show Ultra-Light Cushion Socks –$29.98

Darn Tough No-Show Socks

Simple no-show socks that blend comfort with practicality.

Slip-on sneakers still call for no-show socks that provide comfort for your feet and extend the life of your footwear — agreed? And Darn Tough makes some of the best out there; sure, it’s just a hair under $30 for a two-pack, but these are a weather-appropriate way to upgrade your sock game — no white tube socks and sneakers now, ya hear?

The Watch: Szanto Military Field Watch — $150

Szanto Military Field Watch

A watch that can stand up to a little sun and maybe even a spilled drink.

A military field watch for Cinco de Mayo? Absolutely. When the name of the game is hopping from party to party or bar to bar, whether you imbibe or not, it’s still a good idea to step out in casual style that channels rugged vibes. That is to say: Leave the heirloom watch at home this go-round. Luckily for you, the Szanto Military Field Watch is clean and simple, with understated, casual style to match. The price ain’t half-bad, either — pick up my tab, will ya?

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Wiley Sunglasses — $135

Raen Optics

Sunglasses that blend retro style and casual vibes — just what the doctor ordered for your next bar crawl.

If you’ve got the basics of this outfit handled, it’s OK to go a little more retro-inspired, or head-turning, with your accessories. The Wiley Sunglasses from Raen Optics are but one way to do this — they call to mind the sort of shades McQueen might have worn, with a more affordable price tag. And they’re a nice way to fit in with a casual chambray shirt and laidback shorts — these aren’t your average athletic sunglasses, nor are they a cheaper grocery store version. Just right.
Florsheim

The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap — $39.98

Huckberry Explorer's Cap

Vintage style that’s easily wearable and functional at the same time.

No one said it’d be all fun and games on Cinco de Mayo, right? There’s also the chance to catch a nasty sunburn after hours in the heat. So, the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap is going to keep the sun off your face, and do so in style. There’s no athletic logo in sight here — just a vintage-inspired ballcap that’s easily wearable with the basics, including a stylish chambray shirt. Wear it now, wear it on your next road trip and don’t forget to pack it with your stylish beach gear this summer.

The Bag: Billykirk Simple Tote — $184.98

Billykirk

A smart move that should prove quite useful and durable through this bar crawl and beyond.

If you’re questioning the necessity of lugging a bag to a bar crawl or party, well … where are you going to put your phone charger, and your bottle opener, and that six-pack? Answer: The Billykirk Simple Tote . Handsome, built to age well and last through plenty of seasonal adventures, and a heck of a casual bag to complement this ensemble. It avoids the cumbersome straps of a backpack, and yet it’s smaller and easier to carry when compared to a piece like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag.

OK, y’all — who’s ready for Cinco de Mayo? This guy is. Casual, off-duty style can be simple and quite fun, particularly if you start with a shirt that’s at once polished and laidback — enter the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. And you’d do well to complement said shirt with equally laidback, wearable shorts; in this instance, the Katin Patio Shorts should have you all set for the day ahead. And crisp slip-on sneakers in a clean shade of white are an essential style move — enter the SeaVees Huntington Middie into your rotation. Practical touches, from stylish sunglasses to a vintage-inspired ballcap and a durable Billykirk tote are also must-have, especially if you’re hopping around town for hours at a time. And again, the key here comes down to nailing the fit and colors — and enjoying the day responsibly, of course. What are your Cinco de Mayo plans? Hopefully, they involve a few Coronas and a lot of fun.
