The Thursday Buy: The Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag Is Your Next Weekend Getaway Bag

Best weekender bag for men.

As you plan out the rest of your fast-moving summer, I’m sure you’re aware of one thing: For any adventure off the grid (or on the grid!), the right gear is critical — and hopefully, you don’t need me to tell you that Filson delivers that proper gear. The revered Pacific Northwest heritage outfitter is currently running the Filson Semi-Annual Sale, to be sure, but there’s a full-priced pick I’m offering up today: It’s the rugged, impossibly cool Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag, one of the best weekender bags on the market right now.

It’s less of a casual weekend travel bag and more a dependable bag you should take with you off the grid on camping, fishing or hiking trips, but the water-repellent exterior design of the Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag will come in handy just about any time you need it. The waxed canvas is durable and dependable, but made to get better over time, while the legendary brand has also included an interior pocket designed to hold hard-wearing outdoor gear.

Crucially, the Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag features a top-entry U-shaped zipper to provide easy access to your most critical gear off the grid. Accents like bridle leather and the webbing shoulder strap finish off the Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag in hard-wearing fashion, too. The best part about the adventure-minded Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag might be the fact that it’s priced fairly — for the quality and build, that is — at just under $400. The next time you need to load up a tough weekender bag to hit the road, make the proper pick with the Filson Oil Finish Excursion Bag.

See Now, Buy Now: This Shinola Weekender Bag is the Perfect Everyday Carry for Holiday Travel

You’re no doubt familiar with Detroit-based Shinola as the brand behind some of the best men’s watches on the market, from the perfect watch for dressy occasions to one of the best men’s everyday watches, period. But if you’ve kept a close eye on the brand in recent years, you’ll know they’re so much more than that: They’ve grown into a brand that makes the best everyday carry goods, leather accessories and more, including one of the coolest weekender bags for holiday getaways (and of course, more occasions beyond just this season). Without a doubt, the Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall shakes up the traditional weekender bag formula in a way that only Shinola can, and this is a very, very good thing indeed. Named for the West Detroit neighborhood lined with stylish Victorian homes, the Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall is a bag you don’t have to think too much about buying, or about packing up when the occasion calls for hitting the road in style. It delivers in much the same way as a stylish Shinola men’s watch — reliable, refined-yet-versatile, and rugged at the same time.

The Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall is at its best in the edition featuring durable canvas and handsome Italian Vachetta leather trim, all the better to blend durability and style points. It retails for $895 at Shinola, certainly an investment but one that’ll pay off from the very first time you pack up this bag to hit the road this holiday season. After all, if the Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall becomes the only weekender bag you use, then opportunities are plentiful to get your money’s worth, right? No doubt about it.

Because it’s Shinola we’re talking about, all the details of this stylish men’s weekender bag have been taken care of, so you needn’t worry about them. Take the brass hardware, delivered with a matte nickel finish that’s not too loud or ostentatious. Then, consider the interior zip pocket (perfect for holding a classic, crisp Shinola men’s watch), not to mention the fact that the pocket itself within the Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall features space for up to a 15-inch laptop. The durable canvas can withstand long days of travel, and the Italian leather is actually going to get better and more supple the more you use this handsome weekender bag.

Now, this weekender bag might not work all that well if you’ve planned out a ton of outfits — remember though, versatility is king — or if need to pack up a suit or a blazer. Shinola has you covered there with a garment bag-duffel hybrid, but for traveling on the fly in style, the Shinola Canfield Classic Holdall delivers the goods and looks great doing it. Like any Shinola product, it’ll stand the test of time and look great all the while. If that sounds like the sort of bag to bring with you throughout holiday travel, then act accordingly now — and book tickets for that next trip! Happy shopping and safe travels, folks.

Style Pick of the Week: Herschel Supply Co. Tech Novel Duffle

Spend any time perusing the pages of this blog (or the Shop By The Style Guide), and you’ll realize that the best road trip gear is paramount to any successful seasonal trips, no matter the time of year. Especially when it comes time to dress for a fall road trip or in this case, a summer road trip, nothing less than the best duffle bag for men will do. And folks, well, I think I’ve found it. That would be the Herschel Supply Co. Tech Novel Duffle, the perfect blend of functionality, utility and sleek style for days and nights on the go, starting this month and moving through summer and into fall and winter.

Call it the best bag for weekend getaways, or call it a new addition to a rotation that probably already includes road trip luggage, but just be sure you give Hershel Supply Co. a fair look when it comes to the gear you need for your next road trip. Available in a cool and versatile shade of grey dubbed Raven Crosshatch, it’s a bag that’s as durable as it is stylish to carry — note how well it’ll match up with, say, your #OOTD featuring an Oxford shirt as you hit the road. That’s only for starters, however, because the Herschel Supply Co. Tech Novel Duffle has plenty going for it beyond just standout good looks.

SHOP: The Herschel Supply Co. Tech Novel Duffle

The kicker here when it comes to your new favorite weekender bag is that it’s as suited for casual weekend getaways as it is suited for business travel (eventually). That’s because this stylish weekender bag — also available in a classic and slick black colorway — featured a fleece-lined 16″ laptop compartment, plus the ability to fit over the top of your Herschel Supply suitcase with a zippered luggage trolley sleeve. Plus, it features the signature Herschel Supply Co. striped liner, a very helpful shoe compartment to hold your new favorite summer sneakers, and 45 liters of carrying capacity.

After all, not just any old bag will do, will it? No, sir.

Herschel notes that this bag pairs a “clean urban aesthetic with rugged utility” and that’s about as apt of a description as you can conjure up here. It’s sleek, yet tough, as apt to throw in the back of your car for a cabin trip as it is for a weekend stay at a boutique resort (and both sound pretty great right now, do they not?).

SHOP: The Herschel Supply Co. Coast Duffle

It’s something of a specialty for Herschel Supply Co. to churn out the best travel bags for men at standout prices to begin with, and when you consider that this bag now retails for just a shade over $100, that’s even better news for you. It’s the very definition of a grab-and-go duffle, in a subtly stylish “Quiet Shade” color to pair with your favorite travel #OOTD. It’s made from water-resistant tarpaulin with sealed seams, giving this bag a bit of off-trail versatility for hiking and camping trips.

The Herschel Supply Co. Coast Duffle boasts a handy roll-top clip closure for easy access to your EDC haul, while the handles are made from tough seatbelt webbing — they won’t give out on you even if you load this bag up to the max. Screen-printed detailing helps this bag stand out noticeably on the trail, too. This is one of the most versatile weekender bags you can buy, and it’s priced to sell at more than 30 percent off. How cool is that, right?? Plus, 44 liters of carrying capacity gives you more than enough room for all your favorite menswear essentials. Before your first summer getaway, make sure you add the Herschel Supply Co. Style Pick of the Week: Billykirk No. 478 Khaki Carryall

The classic weekender bag to (hopefully) take on your next trip.

Maybe it’s the fact that it’s Memorial Day weekend (traditionally a very travel-heavy weekend!) or maybe it’s the fact that we’re all getting a bit stir-crazy these past few weeks, but it just feels like the right time to shop for one of the best weekender bags, does it not? And the rugged weekender bag in question is going to more than get the job done when it comes time to hit the road again: We’re talking today about the Billykirk No. 478 Khaki Carryall, a classic weekender bag that just so happens to fit right in with the rest of Billykirk’s American-made leather goods. You’ve heard about the brand on the blog before, to be sure, and it’s high time you got acquainted with them if you’ve never picked up some made-in-America gear from the New Jersey-based brand. The Billykirk No. 479 Khaki Carryall is a recent addition to the Billykirk line, one that goes above and beyond what you’d expect from your traditional weekender bag. To wit: If you’ve been packing for weekend trips or overnight jaunts using a logo duffel or an athletic-minded gym bag, those days are over. This stylish weekender bag is well-made, durably designed and made to be packed up, tossed in the back of your ride, and then not fretted over. The rugged 20oz. waxed canvas and full-grain vegetable-tanned leather can certainly take a beating, no matter how overstuffed your car is.

SHOP: The Billykirk No. 479 Khaki Carryall

The rugged carrying potential and functionality you need from Billykirk.

Now, this all might seem like pure fantasy at this point given, well, *gestures broadly at everything* … but believe me, it’ll still pay off to invest in advance in one of the best weekender bags for men right now. If anything, it’ll be a great reminder to plan out the first trip properly (and then pack accordingly). And assuredly, one of the best weekender bags is going to provide plenty of long-term travel potential and style — just look at how well-made this travel bag happens to be, for starters. It’s finished off with nickel-plated brass hardware, and critically, it’s also water-resistant. Yes indeed, this rugged weekender bag isn’t like anything you’ve owned previously (is it?). Where will this bag take you? Upstate? To the coast? On an inland adventure? The possibilities really are endless when you pick up an investment-worthy travel bag, that much I know to be true. The Friday Read: A Florida Vacation, the Best Lightweight Jackets and A New Pumpkin Ale

The perfect bag for a weekend getaway — like the one I’m about to enjoy, in fact.

We’ll kick off today’s Friday Read by talking about one of the best duffel bags for fall travel; that’d be the WP Standard Canvas Travel Tote. Why is that so important on this fine fall Friday? Well, I’m packing up one of my favorite weekender bags as we speak — to hit the road to sunny Florida! I was originally supposed to take this trip across Labor Day weekend (as seen in this post here), but the potential for Hurricane Dorian thwarted those plans. So now, it’s time for a do-over, as it were! On tap this weekend? Quite literally, visits to a Fort Myers favorite (Point Ybel Brewing), plus the recently opened Coastal Dayz Brewery, to go along with some beach time, some BBQ (my dad’s famous homemade ribs!) and plenty of relaxation. As per usual, you can follow along on my Instagram! It’s my first time in Florida this year, wildly enough, and I always relish the chance to visit family and take in the beautiful weather. I’ll also be looking forward to getting some final wear out of my favorite gear for summer, seeing as we’re on the verge of *gasp* October. If you happen to be hitting the road for fall, again, get a load of the WP Standard Canvas Travel Tote, one of the best weekender bags you can buy right now. And in the meantime? The below Friday Read should help you start the weekend off quite nicely.

  • Let’s stick with GearMoose for a second, shall we? And again, although my mind isn’t exactly on the best pumpkin beer for the season as I head to Florida, it’s tough to pass up the Montauk Pumpkin Ale, is it not? It’s the ideal beer to enjoy on a crisp fall afternoon (preferably at a tailgate).
  • Is there anything better than realizing the time is finally right to wear your favorite fall jacket? As in, one of the best waxed jackets on the market? From Filson to Taylor Stitch, I rounded up some of my favorites for The Manual. Enjoy the season, my friends!

We’ll keep it fairly brief for today’s Friday Read — but not before I direct you back toward my guide on how to wear black jeans this season. Class ’em up casually with a chambray shirt (in addition to the picks in this #OOTD) or keep it rugged and versatile with your favorite leather boots. Again, stylish black jeans are your secret fall style weapon. OK, that’s all as we close out this last September weekend. Cheers!

The Friday Read: The Best Smarwatches, A New Denim Shirt and The State of the Music Industry

Step on up and dive right in to this week’s Friday Read, packed with men’s style essentials aplenty to start your weekend off right. I’m looking forward to another early “Summer Friday,” (a perk of working in the NYC PR world!). This weekend, I’m planning on visiting the iconic Grand Central Station, enjoying some local coffee and neighborhood strolls, and checking out the lauded Brooklyn Museum! It’ll be a relaxing and enjoyable summer weekend, to say the least.  I truly can’t wait. The close of this week also means that we’re one week closer to Labor Day and the end of summer — how are you prepping for early fall? Might I suggest shopping some of my favorite menswear picks to make the transition? I hope that the below menswear reads are helpful to you as you shop, pack and plan. Without any further ado, here we go! Happy reading, happy shopping & wishing you a happy weekend.

  • Some guys are watch guys, and some guys just … aren’t. At least, not in the traditional sense. If you find yourself in the market for a new, tech-forward timepiece, just about the best thing you could do would be to check out my feature on the best smartwatches for 2018 over on GearMoose.
  • I’ll be sharing more thoughts on the best weekender bags in the season ahead, but for now, I’d say you’d do well to check out my latest piece for The Manual covering essential, stylish gear to pack up for your next trip out of town.
  • Let’s talk dependable, everyday style — with just a bit of edge thrown in, that is. The Flint and Tinder Bone Button Western Shirt keeps popping up on the site for good reason. It’s made with quality cotton in a rich indigo color, and it features a reliable fit for layering over everything from a grey slub tee to a long-sleeve thermal shirt (come early fall, that is). That’s why I’d recommend you catch up with our See Now, Buy Now series, and make the Bone Button Shirt work for you.

  • OK, switching tracks a bit here — I’m a huge fan of all things live music, from festivals to small Brooklyn club shows, so I found the big news out of the music industry this week both intriguing and alarming. That is to say, Paste Magazine and other outlets have reported that musicians received only 12 percent of the music industry’s $43 billion in revenue last year. YIKES. Give the article a read, and then buy a T-shirt the next time you see your favorite local indie artist, yes?

Can’t get enough menswear before the weekend? Shop these menswear must-haves before you go. Thanks for reading!

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Men’s Weekender Bags for a Road Trip

That bag you’re packing up for your next getaway — is it one of the best men’s weekender bags for a road trip? No? You’re not sure? Don’t worry — it’s taken care of. A stylish weekender bag is the lofty subject we’ll tackle in today’s latest Online Shopping Picks entry — and I think you’re going to like the results.  As we so often talk about here on The Style Guide, developing great style really is the sum of a lot of moving parts. From the stylish  sneakers on your feet to that slim short-sleeve shirt hanging in your closet, looking and feeling great comes down to the details — and that’s certainly the case when it comes to the bag you’re bringing with you on your next road trip.
Florsheim
If the goal is to get out of town in style, you’re going to want a functional, durable weekender bag that looks just as great as it performs. We’re talking about a tough weekender bag that can go from the trunk of your car to the overhead bin to the floor of your rustic, refined boutique hotel without missing a beat. The right bag has got good looks, easy utility and investment-level quality in spades. And as to the below options? Well, I’d say that each of them certainly pass muster. Chime in on Twitter with any thoughts on this list of the best men’s weekender bags, and follow me on Instagram to see how I’m packing in style this summer.

#1. Nisolo Leon Weekender — $397.98

Relatively rare all-leather construction, excellent looks and an agreeable price.

Is the Nisolo Leon Weekender pricey? Yes. Is it a Style Guide favorite for its combination of rugged good looks and smart craftsmanship? That’s also a definitive “Yes.” An all-leather weekender like the Leon Weekender is a pretty rare find these days, particularly with a price tag that’s not too outrageous. Think of this as a stylish weekender bag that’ll look just as handsome with a tailored suit on a business trip as it will with a chambray shirt and chinos on a casual weekend getaway.

#2. Billykirk Large Sport Carryall — $251.98

Billykirk

The rugged ability to serve as both a gym bag and a weekender bag — you should expect nothing less from Billykirk.

Leave it to Billykirk to make a weekender/gym bag that works twice as hard as you’d expect. In one instance, the Large Sport Carryall is a uniquely stylish way to lug your favorite gym gear to and from a morning workout. And the next day, it could reliably serve as a durable weekender bag for an upstate trip. With its use of Cordura material and Mil-Spec hardware — not to mention sturdy, USA-made construction — picking up the Large Sport Carryall is almost like getting two bags for the price of one.

Timex

#3. Bespoke Post Weekender Box — $45

$45 for the Bespoke Post Weekender Box? Too good to be true, right? Wrong.

That price above isn’t a typo. You really can get the Bespoke Post Weekender Box for just $45 (when you sign up for Bespoke Post, that is). In all seriousness, why on Earth wouldn’t you want to sign up for Bespoke Post when the result is a bag like the weekender shown here? Available in a range of colors and made from what the brand calls “thick and capable canvas,” it’s the type of bag that’ll only get better with age — and I’m sure you’ll reach for it time and again. Yes indeed, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box might be the smartest purchase you’ll make this summer.

Nautica

#4. Topo Designs Mountain Duffel — $229

The Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is all business — sleek, no-nonsense and definitely very functional.

If you consider yourself a guy who favors more minimal, functional style and performance rather than bright, loud colors when shopping for a stylish weekender bag, the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is the bag for you. It’s water-resistant right down to the YKK zippers, and it offers handy design touches like a padded base and side panels (all the better to keep your gear safe). In a sleek black color, it’s a low-key way to upgrade your weekender bag — it’s more than ready for camping trips, hikes or day trips.

#5. Filson Small Duffel — $297

Filson

A richly crafted, durable and timeless bag from Filson — that’s all you can ask for, really.

Leave it to the lauded gear makers at Filson to continually deliver on classic pieces that stand the test of time. While not quite as large in size as some of the other options on this list, the Filson Small Duffel is every bit as deserving of a spot here. It starts with the brand’s attention to detail and namely, Filson‘s own rugged, functional, abrasion-resistant twill. Other helpful design touches — such as the tough bridle leather straps and solid brass zipper — help make this bag an investment-worthy classic.
Ben Sherman

Honorable Mention: Bradley Mountain Utility Bag — $159

A carryall that can also serve as a weekender bag — that’s the way it’s done, folks.

There are simply far too many options out there in terms of stylish weekender bags to end this list at just five. It was a tough call, but the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag just barely missed the cut here (Editor’s note: Catch a full write-up on this bag in our Style Pick of the Week series). Able to be fashioned into a carryall for just about anything you can think of — including your favorite summer gear — the Utility Bag is also the type of bag that could reliably haul enough clothes for a weekend away.  The Bradley Mountain Utility Bag features rugged good looks and the sort of durability that you only get from using a custom oiled and waxed leather construction. That is to say, it’s a one-of-a-kind bag that you need in your summer travel arsenal … now.

END. Clothing

In summary: You need — like, need — at least one of the best men’s weekender bags in your rotation for the months ahead. Whether you reach for a two-in-one bag like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag or the handsome, durable  Large Sport Carryall from Billykirk is entirely up to you — either one would be a wise move. And a sturdy weekender bag from a heritage brand like  Filson provides both instantly recognizable looks and classic style. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can’t go wrong with a minimally designed number like the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel. And in terms of looks, quality and affordability? Well, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box is a surefire winner, available in a diverse range of colors and geared to go anywhere you can dream up. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best weekender bags below — and of course, I’m reachable at all hours on The Style Guide Facebook page.

Thanks for reading — and stay stylish!

Online Shopping Picks: Best Men’s Weekender Bags

The Navali Stowaway Weekender bag in Carafe. What are you packing this spring and summer?

The Navali Stowaway Weekender bag in Carafe. What are you packing this spring and summer?

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine (and blog reader) asked me about recommendations for great weekender bags. It got me thinking – now that winter is finally thawing out, I’m sure lots of us have our eyes on spring or summer getaways. While hitting the road for a vacation  is always fun, a big part of the process is how you’re getting there & what you’re packing. And if you’re kitted out in a stylish get-up for the road, you need a bag that’s equally as sharp. Backpacks and sports duffle bags, although functional, don’t provide nearly enough room or the looks needed for longer travel. And while formal briefcases or suitcases work for business trips, the weekender bag is all about providing enough room for the essentials — and doing so in an easygoing fashion. Here are 5 great bags for the road ahead.

#1. Navali Stowaway Weekender Bag — $159.99

The Navali Stowaway Weekender Bag comes with a lifetime warranty, and should last a good long while.

The Navali Stowaway Weekender Bag comes with a lifetime warranty, and should last a good long while.

First seen on this blog back in August of last year, the Carafe color pictured here is now gone – but it’s been replaced with an equally stylish washed navy option or a spring-like “Sand” shade. The blue cotton canvas contrasts nicely with the brown leather fastenings, but it’s not all for show. Exterior pockets with strong buckle fastenings, tough zippers, a thick & comfortable shoulder strap and just enough for the essentials make this bag worth the price. Dimensions are 22″ width, 12″height, 8 1/2″ diameter.

#2. J. Crew Abingdon Weekender Bag — $198

Deep olive. Waxed cotton canvas. J. Crew's Abingdon bag.

Deep olive. Waxed cotton canvas. J. Crew’s Abingdon bag.

It’s tough to go anywhere on Siblings with Style without finding a J. Crew item in a shopping roundup — this is one company doing many things exceptionally. The Abingdon is slightly bigger than the Navali above in terms of height (17 1/2″), width (26″) and diameter (9 1/4″), so it can certainly carry more goods & take a bit of a beating. The waxed cotton canvas construction should age very nicely with increased usage too.

#3. Everlane Twill Weekender — $95

Everlane's simple, clean take on the weekender.

Everlane’s simple, clean take on the weekender.

Everlane delivers a much more minimal, modernist (and cheaper) take on the weekender bag. The brand keeps things simple with a grey cotton twill exterior and black leather fastenings — no aged waxed cotton here, folks. Everlane’s bags really put the brand on the map and continue to be quite popular. Having used an Everlane twill weekender pretty extensively across the past summer in New York, these bags can definitely take quite a lot for the price.

#4. Filson Large Duffel Bag — $358

True heritage quality — and an heirloom-worthy price.

True heritage quality — and an heirloom-worthy price.

Filson has something the other brands on this list don’t — real, true heritage when it comes to make hardy outdoor gear. Only in recent years has the brand become known more among the fashion community, but it’s got years of experience outfitting hunters, fishers and outdoorsmen. Its bags are crafted from the same durable mindset. This duffle is a true beast of a bag, guaranteed for life and by far the most substantial weekender listed. The olive & tan versions are backordered, but navy and brown are in stock.

#5. Shinola Signature Duffle — $1,250

Exceptionally expensive. But also exceptionally well-made.

Exceptionally expensive. But also exceptionally well-made.

So this post isn’t really advocating you go out and drop more than A GRAND on a single bag. But, it’s always worth it to scout out what options are out there – and maybe keep a goal in mind for a future investment. This particular bag looks beautiful and features outstanding Horween leather and is individually stamped and numbered — those are the kind of details that bring the price up. The hardware is solid brass, and despite being leather, this bag should not only hold up but also age exceptionally well (it better for that price!). Available in black & brown, with a cognac number coming soon.

NOTE: Other bags that just missed the cut here include J. Crew Factory’s somewhat smaller but very affordable Carson duffle bag, Navali’s Waxed Stowaway Weekender in Olive and Frank & Oak’s Genuine Italian Leather Weekender. JackThreads is also stocking quite a few weekender bags for low prices at the moment.

What’s your favorite from this list? Any idea what you’ll be buying for your travels?
