#OOTD: Here’s How to Wear A Polo This Summer

The days of the old polo shirt you used to wear are over — at least, I think they should be. That’s where we’re going with today’s look, led by perhaps the best new polo on the market. Said polo shirt is a performance polo that also incorporates serious style points via Western Rise — as you’ll see below — but let’s get into the “Why” and “How”‘ first, shall we? Now, to be clear: Our #OOTD series has covered quite a bit of ground already this summer, from how to style your short-sleeve shirt to how to wear a rugged henley. On that note, consider this latest entry a bit of a step up in dressy, refined style for the summer, to say the least. The right polo shirt can go sharp or casual, and we’ll mix in just a bit of both today. Let’s say you’re very, very slowly but surely heading back to the office, or more likely … just looking to mix up your at-home style a bit. If you’ve grown tired of sneakers and even slim light wash jeans, then today’s look is going to suit you quite nicely. We’ll pair your Western Rise polo with stylish five-pocket pants, and we’ll go a step further with a pair of the best leather loafers. As to the rest of the ensemble, I think you’ll find it’s crisp, razor-sharp and ready to shake up your summer. Long story short: If you’ve been wondering how to wear a polo this summer, allow me to point you in the right direction. And if you like this look, feel free to let me know on Twitter.

A classy, sharp, refined way to wear a polo this summer.

Alright, that wasn’t too bad … was it? When you shake things up right from the get-go with a¬†merino polo from Western Rise, you’re naturally stepping up your game from other polo shirts. It’s going to keep you cool and refreshed on a hot summer’s day, as are the rest of your key ensemble picks. Take those Crockett and Jones loafers, for instance. They just so happen to be stylish and refined loafers that work on a sweltering day by keeping you cool (margarita not included). When you team them up with some Buck Mason pants in a durable-yet-lightweight canvas, the look gets all the better. And your new favorite watch — from Timex, naturally — helps keep you on schedule in seriously cool retro style. As ever, the details make the difference here. Because you’re wearing stylish brown leather loafers, you need one of the best leather belts for men to properly accessorize the whole ensemble, and Billykirk gets it more than right. To stay organized at home or at work, something like a¬†stylish leather tech folio from Bellroy is going to get the job done (pun intended). I’m also a fan of the Raen Optics Wiley Sunglasses — they’re a bit dressy and a bit casual, and all classic. Last but certainly not least, a pair of the best wireless headphones delivers a rich, truly excellent listening experience, whether plugged into your home system or your laptop. I think we covered all the bases, did we not? Feel free to let me know your thoughts on Twitter or follow me on Instagram for more style content. Thanks for reading!¬†

#OOTD: How To Wear Your New Favorite Polo for Spring Weather

Mark my words: The right #OOTD doesn’t happen overnight, nor does it simply spring from your closet, fully formed and ready to be worn to your (home) office and out on (socially distanced) spring adventures. No sir, the right #OOTD requires careful planning, foresight and an eye toward buying up the best spring style essentials right here and now (unless, of course, you’re already in possession of a few of these seasonal style picks below). And if you feel like your spring style has some catching up to do, you’re in luck — we’re telling you all about how to wear a polo today in a way that’s fresh, modern and certainly versatile enough for a Zoom happy hour. It really starts, as one would expect, with a stylish spring polo made with fabric that’s breathable and anti-microbial. As you’ll see, the look gets a shot in the arm with a¬†durable workwear jacket that doubles as a blazer or as the perfect casual jacket (it’s all up to you). Gone are the days when your polo was paired up with baggy pleated chinos (although we’ve all been there) — instead, you’ll find slim five-pocket pants (also available in a Straight fit via Huckberry), and of course, sleek leather slip-ons to nod to the spring weather. When you can wear a polo in a manner that’s just as laidback and cool as your favorite T-shirt or classic chambray shirt, that’s very good news indeed. That’s why we’re here, and that’s why I hope you check out the rest of this look below (keep scrolling!). To see how I’m getting dressed this season, head to my Instagram.

Versatility is the key when dressing for spring, and so it goes when finding one of the best men’s polos — and then, trying to find as many ways to wear it as possible. For guys like you and me, that’s actually easier than it sounds. In this case, it involves starting with your new favorite everyday pants, and then pairing them with a rather unexpected footwear choice, a pair of the Astorflex Patnoflex — they actually wear like leather loafers but have the cool, breezy, coastal style that we’re going to see more of come later spring and summer. Of course, one of the best men’s polos stays office-ready, too, particularly when paired up with an updated chore coat that wears like a blazer and offers excellent spring travel style. Things get even better, though — throw on a rugged stainless steel field watch for the ultimate in style on the road and at home, then accessorize in sleek fashion with a slim leather wallet — you’re not missing a beat, that’s to be sure. Before you leave the house, step out with the Raen Optics Wiley Sunglasses for a dash of old-school cool. But take it a step back, because before you’re going to want to do that, you should kick back with a fresh face mask for a bit of a spring grooming refresh. Play your cards right, rock these menswear essentials, and prepare to have one heck of a fun spring day. Cheers!

#OOTD: My Guide to Wearing a Polo Shirt This Summer

Perhaps thinking of a polo shirt conjures images of baggy, overly stuffy iterations you wore back in middle school or high school — rest assured, that’s not the classic navy polo we’re talking about today. No sir, today’s #OOTD on how to wear a polo shirt this summer is all business, and we mean that in the best way possible. The key with taking on the polo in these trying modern times starts with finding one that’s versatile, functional & stylish — decidedly not like the first polo you ever wore. Take the Proof Merino 72-Hour Polo as seen below, a performance-minded polo that really doesn’t look all that different from the navy polo worn by James Bond back in the day. We’re mixing and matching it with other rugged, casual-yet-sharp pieces, from a washed denim jacket to stylish canvas slip-ons, all the better to help you “choose your own adventure,” as it were. What I’m trying to say is, you could reasonably wear this classic navy polo to the office and to happy hour during the week, or else out to a sharp weekend brunch or a round of afternoon cocktails. All these pieces work together in harmony (I think), so that’s to be applauded. See how it all shakes out below.

There’s the normal way to wear your polo shirt, and then there’s THIS way.

  • The Polo Shirt: Proof 72-Hour Merino Polo, $78¬†— Think of the classic navy polo, and then think of a merino polo that’s made to wear for travel and a day at the office, all thanks to its breathability and performance.
  • The Jacket: Levi’s Trucker Jacket, $89.50¬†— Want to switch it up from your typical blazer or spring windbreaker? A rugged trucker jacket from Levi’s — in a spring-friendly light wash — is the way to go. Perfect for lightweight layering.
  • The Chinos: Flint and Tinder Cool Chinos, $98¬†— Shake off the overly preppy connotations of the polo-chinos combo by reaching for these slim chinos from our pals at Flint and Tinder.
  • The Sneakers: Vulcanizer Canvas Slip-Ons, $125¬†— Another way to shake up this outfit? Throw in some stylish slip-on sneakers that you can slide right on (use this foot powder from Duke Cannon before and after).
  • The Watch: Uniform Wares Rose Gold Dress Watch, $700¬†— Am I recommending you splurge on this stylish leather watch? I am, precisely because Uniform Wares has succeeded in making one that’s both casual and sharp — like this #OOTD.
  • The Sunglasses: Garrett Leight Co. Brooks 47, $340¬†— In keeping the whole theme of “casual-cool” going, reach for these Garrett Leight sunglasses, probably some of the sharpest on the market.
  • The Pomade: O’Doud’s Standard Pomade, $12.98¬†— Because this is the type of outfit that can pull double-duty at the office and on the weekend, reach for some of the best men’s pomade to complement the sharp styling accordingly.
  • The Grooming Essential: Ursa Major Daily Force Field SPF, $54¬†— Among men’s grooming tips you can’t go without, using a daily moisturizer or sunscreen like Ursa Major’s Daily Force Field is seriously underrated¬† (but critical).

So, what’s the verdict on this #OOTD? Where would you wear it? And do you think all the parts work together quite as nicely as I do? The idea of taking something as simple as a¬†merino polo is only amplified by the equally versatile pieces with which you pair it.. Add a¬†rugged trucker jacket from Levi’s, as we’ve done here, and you’re good to go to the office or the bar (swap in a blazer if you feel so inclined). On that same note, slim chinos in a unique shade of Rust shake off the preppy vibes one gets from a polo and chinos typically. You’re also getting unique style and plenty of comfort from stylish slip-on sneakers — another change of pace from leather loafers or brown brogues . But remember: Don’t forget to use this foot powder from Duke Cannon before and after. The beauty of a go-anywhere ensemble like this one has to be the fact that a stylish leather watch can dress it up as you¬† please — the Uniform Wares watch showcased above is seriously sharp and office-ready, should your day require it. Particularly if you find yourself hanging out on a rooftop patio for hours on end, you’re going to need the Garrett Leight sunglasses seen above, and you’re particularly going to be thankful you used Ursa Major’s Daily Force Field before heading out the door.¬† The last step in this equation? Nailing the perfect haircut with some of the best men’s pomade your money can buy. Do you feel ready to take on spring and summer yet? One can only hope.

#OOTD: How to Wear A Polo Shirt This Summer

If you’ve been dressing for warm weather for a few months now, perhaps your #menswear rotation feels a bit stale. After all, perhaps you’ve got that slim-fit polo shirt and yet … don’t quite know how to wear it or what to wear it with? Aside from pairing it up with slim light wash denim or tailored chino shorts, there are a few key moves you should keep in mind when using a slim polo shirt as the basis of your ensemble.  Importantly, don’t shy away from pairing up said polo with a tailored jacket. The key to getting that oft-coveted versatility so many of us seek in a stylish summer polo? It all starts with a shirt that’s dressy, crisp and tailored — yet easy to wear with just about anything. That’s where Criquet Shirts comes into play. Namely, its Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — crafted with a sharp collar, quality fabric and breathability in the summer heat — is a winner. I can certainly vouch for that, having taken a few of the brand’s polo shirts on a Memorial Day weekend trip to Florida.  And I think you’ll be similarly pleased if you pick up a Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt  for yourself — so stay tuned, read on and let me know what you think of the following outfit via The Style Guide Facebook page.

Nautica

A sharp, slim-fitting polo plus a crisp suit jacket and garment-washed chinos — all staples that are stylish and summer-friendly.

The Shirt: Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in Midnight Cowboy, $79 — As we’ve mentioned before, Criquet Shirts knows how to make a nice, wearable and modern-yet-classic polo — you know, the kind McQueen might’ve worn.

Florsheim
The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket, $278 — Made in part from linen — the of-the-moment fabric you need in your closet  this summer — the modern Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket nicely offsets the sharp polo.

The Trousers: Johnston and Murphy Slim-Fit Garment-Washed Chinos, $88 — While you could certainly wear your Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt with matching Taylor Stitch suit trousers, slim chinos in a pleasing off-white shade are summer-friendly and a bit more casual.

The Shoes: Nisolo Calano Oxford, $188 —  Clean, simple and well-constructed, the Nisolo Calano Oxford is a sharp alternative to traditional brown wingtips.

The Socks: Arvin Goods No-show Socks (Three-pack), $30 — Thanks to past entries on this site — including how to wear linen trousers this summer — I’d wager you’re familiar with the comfortable, affordable Arvin Goods No-show Socks — they’re a critical way to keep your feet cool when worn with rolled chinos.

Ben ShermanThe Watch: Orient Bambino Second Generation, $179.98 — For a look that incorporates both tailored and more casual elements, reach for a handsome, clean watch like the Orient Bambino Second Generation.

Sutro Footwear

The Sunglasses: Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, $99.98 — A returning entrant from this site’s Style Pick of the Week series,  the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses blend versatility and retro style easily.

The Everyday Carry: This Is Ground Mod 15-Inch Laptop Case, $419.98 —  Want to look sleek and office-ready? Take all of your daily essentials in the This Is Ground Mod Case, a handy, sharp accessory.

When stepping out in something a little bit different from the everyday — in this case, a slim-fit polo shirt worn with the sharp Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket  — the key is getting that polo fitted properly from the get-go. That allows you to throw on a tailored jacket and slim chinos. With those pieces in order, you’ll definitely step out in style with the sleek-yet-rugged  Nisolo Calano Oxford. Naturally, other stylish accessories should get some play, too. Although a small detail, I can’t recommend the Arvin Goods No-show Socks enough, and I certainly can’t recommend the Orient Bambino Second Generation enough, either. Oh, and lastly ….retro style inspiration is the way to go when wearing a throwback polo, so something along the lines of  Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses should treat you very nicely. Where are ya going? Don’t leave before securing your everyday carry with the This Is Ground Mod Case. I think that covers all of the bases here — with that being said, I leave it up to you to shop this look, wear this look and quite simply … crush it wearing this look.

Thanks for reading — stay stylish!

Style Suggestion: How to Wear Your New Favorite Polo

We try to keep things moving forward when it comes to our Style Suggestion series on the blog. That is, mixing up situations — including things like how to dress for winter travel — and certain occasions, like dressing for the polar vortex. Now that we’ve reached the start of March (pretty wild in and of itself), it’s time to turn our eyes toward spring style. We’re not necessarily all the way out of chilly weather yet, and rain likely beckons ahead in the forecast. But when you want to lighten things up, how do you do so in a way that’s crisp and yet easily wearable through the season? Easy. A long-sleeve polo. It’s got some “geezer style” connotations, but the long-sleeve polo¬†is also a classic menswear piece worn with casual cool (and James Bond in “Casino Royale” even dons a navy long-sleeve rugby shirt). Luckily for us, we’re taking a great long-sleeve polo from Paul Fredrick and styling it accordingly today for spring weather. Read on, shop away and join us on Instagram and Twitter for plenty o’ daily #menswear inspiration.

The Long-Sleeve Polo: Paul Fredrick Silk, Cotton and Cashmere Polo Pullover — $79.50 [Get 20 percent off and free shipping on any order with code ‘IMSCBH’].

A refined layering option made from luxurious fabric.

A refined layering option made from luxurious fabric.

Part polo, part pullover and made with quite the luxurious blend of silk, cotton and cashmere, this Paul Fredrick long-sleeve polo is the way to go if you want breathability, comfort and style fit for spring weather. The navy colorway calls to mind what Bond himself wore, and it’s the right pick here in that it’s not too bright or loud — perfect for all types of style scenarios, including dressing for Sunday brunch. Plus, you can pick up it up for 20 percent off using the code above.

The Jacket: Abercrombie & Fitch Box Quilted Jacket — $130

A neat new addition to your spring outerwear rotation.

A neat new addition to your spring outerwear rotation.

Just as critical as your base or mid-layer — perhaps moreso — is a stylish spring jacket. As with its fall and winter offerings (like the rugged, essential Abercrombie & Fitch Chamois Shirt), the brand continues to build on its reputation as an essential company for today’s well-dressed guy. With unique takes on outerwear like the Box Quilted Jacket
you get a different look combined with comfort (the fleece lining helps with that). What’s more, the neat olive color is a nice way to transition from the darker hues of winter into the lighter¬†shades of spring and summer.

Nothing fancy or overpriced about a comfortable undershirt.

Nothing fancy or overpriced about a comfortable undershirt.

While you could use the pullover in a fashion similar to a V-neck sweater and layer up with¬†a classic chambray shirt, it’s visually interesting enough on its own to merit the use of a simple (yet well-made) Mack Weldon undershirt. Call your Style Guide author crazy, but from the brand’s merino long-sleeve tees¬†to the neat Mack Weldon Vesper Polo, these guys are a brand to know — and wear any time you need a comfortable base layer.
Yet another item to pick up from a brand that's getting better and better.

Yet another item to pick up from a brand that’s getting better and better.

¬†If you’re more likely to think of baggy cargo shorts — or pants — when you think of A&F than slim chinos, think again. The brand’s revamped focus centers around all manner of menswear staples, including what could be your new favorite pair of chinos (seriously — you just haven’t bought ’em yet). They feature what looks to be a straight, yet relatively tailored, cut. And the use of cotton and elastane should give them some comfortable stretch. Yes indeed, grab a stylish leather weekender bag and wear these bad boys when you hit the road this spring.
The Boots: Astorflex Bitflex Chelsea Boots¬†— $180
An ethically made, great-looking Chelsea boot for a casual style situation.

An ethically made, great-looking Chelsea boot for a casual style situation.

If these boots ring any bells, that’s great — crucially, they¬†were the footwear pick of choice in a feature on how to layer up in style this winter. Casual leather chukka boots would also be a fine style move here — particularly if it’s rainy and you want to keep that suede safe — but these¬†¬†Bitflex Chelsea Boots¬†offer up both spring-appropriate texture and a bit of rich color. Don’t forget that Chelsea boots add a¬†decidedly¬†modern vibe to the more classic parts of this outfit (including khaki chinos and a long-sleeve polo).

The Watch:Tanner Goods Martenero Ace Automatic Watch¬†— $549.98

A revamp of the pilot's watch, with a tough leather strap for good measure.

A revamp of the pilot’s watch, with a tough leather strap for good measure.

What do you get when the heritage leather goods makers at Tanner Goods decide to update a stunning pilot’s watch? Well, you get the Martenero Ace Automatic Watch, another recent #OOTD accessory pick. It’s definitely got a lot going for it — and for that investment-worthy price, you can be darn sure I’m recommending you wear it as much as you can. Featuring a natural shell Cordovan strap that’ll age wonderfully each time you wear it, the Desert Tan face on the Ace Automatic Watch is also bold and unique. In short, the perfect timepiece for this outfit.

The Socks: CHUP Prairie Socks — $35 [Check out the full run of CHUP socks while we’re here].

Not your everyday socks -- and not your everyday price for a pair, either.

Not your everyday socks — and not your everyday price for a pair, either.

We never let stylish socks slide here at the blog — especially if they’re a¬†pricey, yet well-made, pair like these CHUP Prairie Socks. The design offers a shot of unique color and pattern, and you get handmade quality via a wearable cotton blend.¬†As always, your¬†socks shouldn’t be an area you overlook.

¬†The Sunglasses: Sunski Dipseas Sunglasses —¬†$44.98
Different than your everyday aviators, but just as necessary in your rotation.

Different than your everyday aviators, but just as necessary in your rotation.

Hey, recognize that accessory? Stylish men’s sunglasses?¬† Sure you do. We certainly haven’t hit full-on beach weather as of yet, but we’ll get there soon (hopefully). And you know what else is great? Well, the¬†Dipseas Sunglasses from our friends at Sunski are unique, effective and affordably priced. They’re just the type of¬†piece to offset a more casual look in a cool fashion — and that’s how every outfit should be finished off, right?
Frank & Oak
If you’re now amped and fully ready to step out in classic spring style, you’re not alone. From a sharp, revamped piece of spring outerwear to your new favorite long-sleeve polo and classic Mack Weldon¬†basics, this outfit has something for everyone. Essential chinos provide¬†classic contrast alongside the more modern¬†Bitflex Chelsea Boots, and before you know it, you’ll be breaking out a neat pair of Dipseas Sunglasses (trust me on that). And as I said before, a durable and tough watch like the Martenero Ace Automatic Watch ties everything together very nicely indeed. Good luck getting ready for spring, and let me know¬†what you think of today’s outfit in the comments.
See you around and stay stylish,

So, you sidle up to the bar on a Saturday night — maybe on a first date. What are you wearing? A polo inspired by the crisp, clean, effortlessly cool style of 007, that’s what. My friends, we’re talking today about the Mack Weldon Vesper Polo, a heck of a polo that puts together the favorite style principles of 007 in one shirt. It doesn’t hurt that it’s named for the original (and perhaps best-known) drink downed by everyone’s favorite secret agent. The Vesper Polo nails everything you should look for in a stylish polo for summer¬†— it’s got a clean, modern fit, for starters. And the lightweight micro-mesh knit fabric is exactly what you need to keep you cool and dry in the heat of July (we’ll have an #OOTD styling this exact polo next week, in fact). After checking one out myself during a hot and busy #NYFWM, I’ve got to vouch for that. Plus, this polo is everything great style should be — it’s understated, it’s refined, it’s easily wearable, and the price ain’t half-bad either ($68, for the unitiated). It’s part of Mack Weldon’s effort to expand on basics that work for every guy’s wardrobe — if you’ve shopped the brand or participated in our most recent reader giveaway with these guys, you know that all too well. Add this polo to your other favorites of theirs — like an easily wearable Pima Crew Tee — and you’ll be on your way to building a sharp wardrobe any day of the week.

Yet, the great thing about the Vesper Polo is that it’s a great place to start no matter your style level. Seriously, every guy can use reminders about things like proper fit, and this polo makes it easy. It’s wearable with slim shorts or tan chinos, and it doesn’t look out of place when worn in an even more laidback fashion — like atop your favorite swim trunks as you head to the beach or pool. And the self-collar doesn’t flop around like other polo collars — it’ll stay upright through the day (even moreso if you use collar stays),¬†so you can rock it beneath a slim-fit khaki blazer to the office. The trickiest part about the whole endeavor might be picking a favorite color — the Kentucky¬†Blue option seen here is reliable and crisp, yet that Total Eclipse Blue (a dark navy, really) is the same color favored by Bond in Casino Royale¬†(although that option is a bit pricier). So you certainly can’t go wrong with a well-priced, well-performing, effortlessly stylish polo ready for the rest of summer (and even able to be rocked into early fall when layered under a shawl cardigan, for example. The toughest part is going to be putting it away when the weather turns cold — yet if you live in a warm climate, you’ll have the gift that keeps on giving year-round. Keep it handy for that next date in the meantime,¬†yeah?

Have you picked up the Mack Weldon Vesper Polo yet? What’s your favorite style combination when it comes to polos?
