#OOTD: How to Dress for a Fall Road Trip Right Now

We’ve been talking for some time now on the blog about how to dress for early fall (and beyond), and now that we’ve officially crossed over into the season itself, let’s pivot ever so slightly. Let’s go beyond the confines of your home office and your back patio, and let’s talk about how to dress for a fall road trip. I’m not talking about hopping on a cross-country flight — I’m moreso talking about the kind of trip where you pack up a durable duffle bag, grab your most rugged denim jacket, bring along your craft beer growler … and then get in the car and go. Where to?  A cabin, the lake, the river, a quiet town upstate … any and all of the above, right? Right. What to bring with you?

Well, a stylish face mask, for starters. But beyond that, we’ll cover all your fall style essentials for a road trip today on the blog — rest assured of that. Comfort, durability and style are the key here, seeing as you might be going off-trail for a hike or spending plenty of time on your feet, hopping from brewery to brewery (patios and masks preferred). Given that approach, you’ll find the best pants for fall travel and some stylish sneaker boots in the mix, too. Of course, all the right layers are along for the ride, including a tough workwear shirt  and a rugged leather watch. These are picks suited for casual (masked) strolls around town, and with a bit of improvisation, you can get out the door for that orchard or winery tour (at least, that’s what I’d do). How about it? Is this #OOTD ready for fall? I sure hope you think so. Stay safe, gear up and let me know what you think of this ensemble on Twitter.

Versatile, rugged layers for hitting the road this fall.

  • The Jacket: Todd Snyder Japanese Stretch Selvedge Denim Jacket, $288 — Made from rich indigo Japanese cotton with plenty of stretch, this classic denim jacket is one of the best denim jackets around, and it’s ideal for falll layering given the built-in stretch.
  • The Shirt: Flint and Tinder Selvage Architects Shirt, $128 — Layer up your rugged denim jacket with a new Flint and Tinder shirt, cut like a classic Oxford shirt and yet featuring Japanese selvage fabric for tough durability in fall weather.

  • The Pants: Western Rise AT Slim Pants in Sand, $128 — Cut in a classic five-pocket silhouette and featuring plenty of durability and stretch, these Western Rise pants are the best pants for fall travel, period.
  • The Sneaker Boots: HELM Cole Sneakers in Wheat, $240 — The brand that makes some of your favorite boots (as seen here) is now making some of the best men’s sneakers, cut to be the perfect hybrid between, well, sneakers and boots.
  • The Watch: Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph, $940 — If you want a rugged leather watch that you can wear on the road and then out to grab socially distanced craft beers, you want this durable field watch from Luminox, my friends.
  • The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, $40 — A fittingly named hat for fall adventures, and certainly one of the best men’s ballcaps out there.

If I had to guess, I’d wager that this #OOTD is going to carry you through fall more than stylishly and reliably, no doubt about it. If you’ve been wondering how to dress for fall, period, or how to dress for a fall road trip, start here. A rugged workwear shirt teams stylishly with your new favorite denim jacket, and of course, that combination layers up more than readily with one of the best long-sleeve T-shirts for fall, courtesy of our pals at Buck Mason. When it gets a bit too warm (as is known to happen with shifting winds and fall sunlight), ditch the denim jacket and stick with the long-sleeve tee and your Flint and Tinder shirt. It all works in harmony with the best pants for fall travel, a durable pair that’ll stand up to fall weather and long hours in the car. But of course, a pair of the best men’s sneakers takes the cake on the footwear front (make sure your HELM boots are packed in your bag, of course) — there’s nothing better than comfortable sneaker boots for the trail and the taproom, am I right?

It all comes together in precisely the right way on the accessories front when you consider the versatility of your durable field watch from Luminox, fit for all-day wear. To keep the sun off your face and shield your eyes from the wind ever so slightly, throw on the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap for anything and everything on your to-do list. Last but certainly not least, a versatile duffle bag is the perfect way to haul your weekend style essentials (and it’s easy to pack and easy to zip out into a hanging garment bag). Alright, folks. Who’s ready to hit the road? I’ll see you out there. To get the scoop on how I’m dressing for fall, head to my Instagram

Style Pick of the Week: Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph Watch

A perfectly rugged leather field watch to wear all fall.

Folks, quickly — look at your right or left wrist. Are you missing one of the best watches for men? Even if you’re wearing a watch (a great style move to start, to be sure), I’d bet that it’s not anywhere near as stylish, rugged or dependable as the Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph as shown above (no offense, though!). It’s an investment-level watch that, thanks to its rugged build and durable design, happens to be both one of the best leather watches and one of the best watches for fall. How does that work out?  A rugged watch that wears especially well in the fall months? Yes, you bet. Luminox has a sterling reputation making tactical and military-approved watches, and this leather field watch blends both hearty design specs and plenty of style points. Now, this particular watch retails for $940 via Luminox …  but it’s assuredly worth it.

You see, the cooler weather of fall naturally calls for harder-wearing, tougher gear with plenty of texture and dependability for chilly fall weather, wind and rain. Think a waxed trucker jacket, slim selvedge denim, tough leather boots and of course, a reliable leather watch for men — one that’s got the design and toughness to pair up more than readily with each of those fall style essentials. Still with me? Right on.

SHOP: The Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph

A durable leather field watch that looks great with, well, just about anything.

The specs on this rugged leather field watch are, quite simply, very impressive. The 45mm stainless steel case design is beastly and made for fall and winter adventures off trail, and the screw down crown adds another touch of resistance to the elements. This Luminox watch has plenty going for it on the style front, too — the midnight blue sunray dial is eye-catching and visually appealing, and luminescent dial markings help light the way when conditions get tough out there.

Elsewhere, the Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph features three chronographs and alarm functionality, all the better to stay on time on the trail (and back home). It’s one of the coolest leather watches I’ve seen in some time, and design details like ivory contrast stitching and a handsome honey tan leather strap drive that point home nicely, too. You can rock this stylish leather watch with just about any gear you’d like, but for real fall excursions, my best bet would to pair the Luminox Atacama Field Chronograph with a rugged henley, a denim shirt, your favorite trucker jacket, hard-wearing chore pants and of course, leather lace-up boots. Just like that, you’ve figured out your new favorite fall ensemble — starring your favorite leather watch. Good luck out there this fall, folks.

The Thursday Buy: The Todd Snyder Stretch Selvedge Jeans are Fall’s Best Denim

Slim Fit Japanese Stretch Selvedge Jean in Indigo Rinse

Slim selvedge jeans made from the best Japanese fabric out there — the perfect jeans to wear to work from home.

What’s high on your shopping list heading into fall? Best make sure some of the best menswear from Todd Snyder tops the list. The NYC-based designer will surely help you cover all your bases, including when it comes to the best men’s jeans — that’s right, the best men’s denim just so happens to be made by a designer that also knows how to make an incredible suit and casual boat shoes. Talk about versatility. But we’re not talking about any old pair of jeans off the rack. We’re talking about Todd Snyder selvedge jeans that deliver in terms of fabric, fit and feel. Jeans made from a more rugged fabric (a la Japanese cotton selvedge) are just what the doctor ordered for fall and winter, in fact.

Again, there’s one place to go in this regard. When you want selvedge jeans that deliver quality, an agreeable price and infinite wearability, you might just want (no, you absolutely do want), the Slim Fit Japanese Stretch Selvedge Jean in Indigo Rinse from the good folks at Todd Snyder.

women's oxford shoe from Nisolo

The best men’s selvedge jeans get an upgrade here — while selvedge denim is normally unwashed and stiff (this is known as raw selvedge), Todd Snyder selvedge denim receives a handsome indigo rinse and uses unique stretch selvedge fabric from Japan. These aren’t your average pair of jeans, to say the least. They’re refined yet versatile, as at home with a Todd Snyder blazer as with one of the designer’s Champion T-shirts. The fit on these blue jeans is slim and modern, yet not rock star-skinny.

This means you can wear these slim dark blue jeans with the best chukka boots and a chambray shirt, or else with rugged men’s leather boots and a thermal henley all fall and into winter. Todd Snyder Japanese selvedge denim really is one-of-a-kind, so it’s a bit pricer ($198 via Todd Snyder), but no less worth it. In fact, when you find a  pair of selvedge jeans you can wear for months on end into winter — and well past that — I’d suggest you snap them up ASAP.

The Only Thing You’ll Like About Working From Home Are These Birddogs Pants

How I probably looked trying to translate my office life into a WFH wardrobe.

I’ll be honest: My work-from-home wardrobe in the early stages of quarantine was a bit all over the place. I needed some direction — OK, a lot of direction. I only wish I’d known about Birddogs sooner, but now that I’ve had the chance to test out the brand, I’m all-in — keep reading, because I know you’ll feel the same way.

[Editor’s note: This post is presented by Birddogs. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting brands that support The Style Guide!]

Settling into your new routine of Zoom conference calls, frozen pizza for lunch, and an ever-dwindling reserve of streaming television … on and on, and on? Great! It’s best to just lean into the work from home vibe (I know I have). One great way to do that? Streamlining getting dressed in these Birddogs pants with built-in underwear.

They’re super comfortable pants that look like legit professional chinos.

Your new favorite work from home pants.

What’s the Deal with Built-In Underwear?

You’ve probably logged more than a few hours this week already with your butt in a dining room chair, or some other less-than-ergonomic sitting position (guilty as charged from my perspective as I work from home in Brooklyn). Your backside might be aching and inner thighs sticky. But with Birddogs pants, it’s like getting a gentle spandex hug, while your mid-section remains as cool and dry as when you sat down in the morning.

You can chalk this mind-bending comfort up to the pants’ built-in underwear.

Built-in underwear is exactly what it sounds like – underwear sewn inside your pants.  It’s super simple…and very comfortable. Everything stays perfectly in place, no wedging, no nudging, no nothing.  Wearing pants feels better because of it.

Get Birddogs pants to upgrade your WFH life in style.

Where Did Birddogs Come From?

I first heard about Birddogs gym shorts with built-in underwear from friends who raved about them. The revelation that they also made stretch chino pants? That came later.

After logging an embarrassing amount of time on Facebook over the past couple of weeks and months, it became very apparent that your humble Brooklyn menswear editor spends way too much time online searching for the best men’s clothes. Up popped Birddogs ads aplenty!

Wear Birddogs … anywhere.

Some might make you laugh, like this “couple” shopping at a farmer’s market, but don’t be fooled. The quality backs up the product.

This isn’t just an Instagram or Facebook pop-up brand — Birddogs are here to stay, and once you try them, you’ll know why.

The pants fabric itself not only feels incredible but looks like legit professional chinos.  Not that looking professional matters anymore, but it’s good to know for some indeterminate “later” time.

When things get back to normal, maybe you’ll delete Zoom from your computer and give up frozen pizza, but I bet Birddogs pants with built-in underwear will be part of your work wardrobe for good.

#OOTD: How to Wear a Waxed Trucker Jacket This Fall

You wake up one morning, and you know: Fall is well and truly here. You open your window, that crisp, cold air hits … and immediately, your mind jumps to your lovingly stored jackets and sweaters. It’s time, once again, to really start dressin’How exactly are you going to do that? It’s simple, really. Start with one of the best waxed trucker jackets as sold by Huckberry, then go from there. The fall season already looks mighty different (no college football, for one), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dress to experience the pleasures of fall — a to-go brewery trip or a socially distanced orchard visit might be the norm these days, but today’s #OOTD has all the stops covered. To wit: We’re talking even more of the best picks for fall, so as to ensure you’ve got day-to-night style on lock. That means a stylish merino henley and a Levi’s western shirt, for starters. From there, we’re lacing up tough leather boots and throwing on a Shinola leather watch. The overall effect is rugged and functional without going overboard — and it’s going to look great on many a chilly fall day, guaranteed. Check out the full look below, and as ever, head to Instagram to see how I’m dressing this fall. Cheers!

A tough waxed trucker jacket, worn the right way for fall.

Can you feel it in the air? Fall’s best adventures are ahead of us yet, I just know it. When you make a Flint and Tinder waxed jacket the centerpiece of your outfit, only good things are in store — in my humble opinion. This look gets a rugged shot in the arm via both a rugged Western shirt and of course, perhaps the perfect base layer for fall — they’re going to work in harmony to keep you warm and comfortable on the go, no matter what (and when you need to take your trucker jacket off, you can rest assured knowing you still look put together). For mobile, adventure-ready style that works from the trail to the brewery, the Topo Designs Dirt Pants are the right way to go (note the drawstring waistband for comfort). Those straight-fit cotton pants should sit mighty nicely atop some of the best leather boots for fall, a pair coming at you courtesy of FRYE. There’s also never a bad time to throw on the Shinola Runwell Watch, one that works with rugged gear picks like these — as well as dressier fall style situations (when those do occur, that is to say).

If you’re rolling solo and enjoy having a podcast or your favorite indie rock in your headphones, then Master & Dynamic headphones are the only way to go here (wireless functionality makes ’em well-suited for plenty of fall excursions).
