The Friday Read: The Best Labor Day Sales, Taylor Stitch Shirting & Rugged Fall Menswear

The Jack in Navy Stripe | Taylor Stitch - Eco-Stylist | Fall outfits men, Business casual men, Mens street style

If you ask me, it’s pretty hard to believe we’re rolling into Labor Day weekend. Where did the summer go? I spent a solid chunk of time in Michigan, took trips upstate with Laphroaig and Eddie Bauer (geared up accordingly) and yet, here we are talking already about the best Labor Day sales and fall menswear from brands like Taylor Stitch. I’ll have a full list of standout long weekend sales to shop below, but it’s the San Francisco-based retailer I’ve been especially impressed with as of late. In fact, if you need new Taylor Stitch menswear, the long weekend is an ideal time to get it: The long-running brand is offering 20 percent off sitewide (including new releases) and giving you an additional 20 percent off its already-discounted Taylor Stitch Workshop. These deals won’t’ be around for long (try next Monday the 6th), so you’d do well to load up that shopping cart with a few of my favorites from Taylor Stitch.

Besides shopping for some early fall style favorites (most of which you can also find my Shop By The Style Guide), I’ll be staying busy this weekend writing about one of my other passions – music – for an upcoming piece on a post-punk album by a Scottish rock band… any guesses?? Look for it soon at Merry-Go-Round Magazine. I’m also hoping to take advantage of what should be a more dry weekend than wet and wild weather that hit earlier this week via the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida. On the docket for me? Raising a beer at a Brooklyn brewery (follow along on Instagram to find out which!) and wrapping up work on my latest music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief — folks, it’s free to subscribe! In the meantime, I’ll give you plenty to pique your interest this weekend via the best Labor Day menswear sales.

Head to The Shop By The Style Guide for even more menswear

The best men’s style essentials await

How’s that for the right way to kick off Labor Day weekend? Shopping and stocking up on new fall gear and end-of-summer style essentials is but one of the things to focus on this weekend. Elsewhere, I hope you get some time to kick back, relax, reflect on the summer (safely) with friends and family, and perhaps enjoy a cold beverage of your choice. I know I’ll be making an effort to do so, without a doubt. For now, thanks for reading and thanks for supporting The Style Guide!

The Friday Read: The Best Stores Like Zara, New Menswear from Todd Snyder & Fall’s Best Boots

Todd Snyder Fall 2021: 15 Can't-Miss Buys From the Latest Drop | GQ

It’s hard to believe, seeing as I just talked about the best discounts on menswear at Todd Snyder last weekend, but it’s already time to start thinking about the best fall menswear from the lauded designer (and plenty others, of course). Labor Day is right around the corner, and you’d do well to outfit yourself in some of the coolest transitional outerwear, lightweight, easy-to-layer sweaters and expertly faded jeans, among the latest and greatest from the Todd Snyder Pre- Fall Collection. The choice is yours (and you can also find plenty of fall style staples at my Shop By The Style Guide), but Todd Snyder menswear is one heck of a place to start.

Layer up with premium men’s style essentials

I’ve got new fall gear on my mind this week, even as I close out a family vacation in Michigan (I’ll cover my trip a bit more in my weekend newsletter) — I’ll be back in NYC in early September, and ready to ring in the season, as it were, with rugged henleys, waxed jackets and more. You can check out all my favorites for the season ahead, once again, at my Shop By The Style Guide , but you should also keep an eye on my writing at sites like AskMen, where I’m also covering plenty of seasonal style staples. But enough about fall. Right now, I’ve got some sun to catch in Michigan this weekend. And the rest of your Friday Read? You can find it all below, folks.

  • If you read the blog earlier this week, then you’re hopefully well-acquainted with the boots shown above. If not, well, it’s never too late (or too early) to start shopping for the best men’s boots. Head over to Bespoke Post — after reading my blog entry, that is — to shop the most rugged men’s boots for fall from Red Wing Heritage. It’s really that simple.

  • Let’s shift gears quickly to your home, and the goods within that home. It’s about time you invested in the best, is it not? That’s where Shinola’s partnership with Crate & Barrel comes into play. It’s part of the just-launched effort from the Detroit watchmaker to open its own home goods store and expand upon its current line of stylish desk accessories, record players and more — naturally, I wrote about my favorite Shinola For Crate & Barrel pieces over at Maxim this week. Happy shopping!
  • The headline mentions that I’ll be talking about the best stores like Zara, and that’s precisely what I’m doing here by way of my latest Effortless Gent feature covering the top alternatives to Zara. It’s long been an affordable bastion of high-fashion style, and it’s an ideal place to go if you want everything from a camel topcoat to slim denim in your rotation for the season ahead. Head to Effortless Gent — a site for which I’ve been writing for eight years! — to check it out.

Hopefully, a few of those picks have you thinking about how best to dress and accessorize for fall. I’m getting ready slowly but surely for the season ahead, and it’s with that approach in mind that I’m recommending you stock up on the best transitional outerwear, like this Flint and Tinder indigo trucker jacket that I covered here on the blog earlier this week. Again, it’s never too early to get ready for what lies ahead. Stay stylish and thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: Filson New Arrivals, Aether Apparel’s Sale & A Michigan Getaway

My friends, welcome back to another edition of The Friday Read, your guide to the latest and greatest menswear and gear for your weekend. I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly got rugged menswear top of mind this weekend, and for a couple reasons. In dealing with the heat in NYC and Michigan (as part of a family vacation I’m taking Up North!), I’ve been adding some items from the Filson New Arrivals section to my wish list — I’m not sure about you, but I’m definitely coveting some of the best fall menswear right about now. Do you have any favorites from the venerable Pacific Northwest retailer?

Shop Filson’s New Arrivals

Rugged fall gear awaits you

That brings me to another point, and one that’s especially fitting given the Filson heritage of making durable outdoor gear. I’ve got some essentials packed with me this weekend to head “Up North,” as we call the northern Lower Peninsula of my home state of Michigan. It’s my first time back in a year, and quite a bit has changed since on, well, all fronts. I can’t wait to see family (and some college friends prior to that!), and I’ll be outfitted the right way all the while (head to Filson to outfit yourself for the season ahead, while we’re here). Beyond that, I’ll highlight a few of my favorite seasonal picks below. And one last word to the wise: If you prefer your menswear shopping with a side of music and craft beer, as I do, then I’d head over to my music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, which features a bit of all three (and Saturday’s will take a look at the new album from The Killers. one of my favorite bands, in particular). The choice is all yours, but I don’t think you can go wrong. In the meantime, here’s the rest of your Friday Read. Cheers!

The List: Shop for the Best New Spring Style Essentials from Aether Apparel | The Style Guide
  • Now, it’s not every day that one of the best menswear sales comes around. And it’s not every single day that Aether Apparel, makers of some of the best rugged performance menswear out there, drops a sale that’ll make you sit up and take notice. The brand, which I talked about here in a piece on the best men’s gear for spring, is offering up to 60 percent off jackets, sweaters, vests, tees, pants, bags, and more for men (and women), now through August 15th. It’s a sale packed with quality essentials that’s truly not to be missed. Start shopping!

Score great deals on the best menswear
  • Speaking of great deals on great gear, how’s this for one of the best new menswear collections around? Just as we talked about earlier with Filson, it’s high time to start planning, slowly but surely, for early fall. Head over to Grayers, makers of classic chinos, tailored Oxford shirts and super-soft flannel shirts, to get some of the best early fall gear right now. It’s hard to pass up rugged henleys, easy-to-layer shirting and timeless chinos, right? There’s no wrong way to go with Grayers New Arrivals, in my opinion.
  • Speaking of rugged henleys, here’s yet another way to outfit yourself in style this season. Over at Fatherly, a really great parenting and lifestyle site for new dads and guys of any age, I wrote all about the best henleys for early fall from some of my favorite brands, including Buck Mason and seven other standout favorites. Shop accordingly, my friends.

So, that’s where we’ll leave things in today’s Friday Read — that gives you more than enough time to shop for the weekend, does it not? I’ll give you one last recommendation before Friday kicks off in earnest. You’re going to want to keep your grooming on-point from summer into fall, and you should do that by checking out my guide to the best natural deodorant from American Provenance over in this blog post. Keep it classy and sharp, folks. Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week!

The Friday Read: Mott and Bow Men’s Jeans, Buck Mason Trail Shorts & the Best New Overshirt

Mott & Bow: The best jeans for men and women at a fraction of the price | CNN

There’s no time to waste on a summer Friday, so thanks for joining us for today’s Friday Read. I’ve certainly kept busy on the writing front this week (check out my latest for The Manual and Maxim here), but as ever, that’s no excuse not to dress in style. If you agree, and I think you should, (that’s why we’re here with today’s blog, after all!), then there’s one place to go to stay cool and stylish in the heat this weekend. That’d be with a pair of Mott and Bow men’s jeans, a nicely priced, super-premium way to get jeans in multiple fits (from Slim and Straight to Skinny) and washes for every occasion and wardrobe. Consider this my recommendation to start your weekend, one you’re likely familiar with if you caught my post on the best pocket T-shirt for summer earlier this week. It’s always worth reconsidering a brand that does one thing so well, so think of this endorsement like my own Mott and Bow review. What are you waiting for? The clock is ticking, and so is the time to start planning your own stylish weekend.

Start your weekend with Mott and Bow denim

Now, onto the next order of business here in my weekly recap. I’ve got another recommendation for you to kick things off, especially if you’re inclined to tune in to some music throughout the weekend. As you very well might know, I author a twice-weekly music-menswear-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, which covers my favorite bands and my favorite menswear in turn (bands like The Strokes, essentials like a stylish denim jacket). It’s worth subscribing if you pull your style inspiration from the stage, or if you just want a listening recommendation and a new beer to try throughout the weekend.

Mack Weldon

I’ll be working on the next edition prior to tomorrow morning, when it’ll hit your inbox. I’m also going to take the rest of the weekend to write, pack and relax (hopefully, in that order) — I’m hitting the road for a family trip to the great “Up North” of Michigan. To see how that trip goes next week, be sure to give me a follow on Instagram! As for now, here’s the rest of today’s recommended Friday reading and shopping. Enjoy and thanks for reading!

  • No summer adventure, and least of all not in a place like Michigan (or really, anywhere with idyllic lakes and wide-open spaces) is complete without the right pair of shorts. Buck Mason has solved this quite handily, as you’ll see in its New Arrivals Section. The Buck Mason Barstow Trail Roam Shorts are a new step into rugged, sporty and ever-so-slightly outdoorsy territory for the famed American retailer, makers of some of the best men’s jeans. Made from a four-way stretch nylon blend, they’re meant to mimic standard issue Marine Corps shorts. They also feature a hidden zip cord pocket and a mobile-yet-tailored fit. They’re your new favorite pair of shorts, no doubt about it.
  • Here’s another recommendation that works both right now and later on this fall and winter. This certainly won’t be the last time you read about the rugged, durable and seriously cool Filson Denim Work Shirt, which is the type of layer you can wear atop a Filson T-shirt for later summer, then continue wearing with a hard-working Filson thermal shirt when temperatures cool off. I’m excited to get my hands on one for testing soon, and you can be sure the results will be hitting the pages of this blog sooner rather than later.

  • I talked above about the importance of finding one of the best pairs of jeans for men, but it can be easier said than done at times. That’s where my latest guide for Fatherly — a really excellent parenting and lifestyle site for guys (and really, anyone!) comes into play. I covered a crucial ensemble, the best jeans and T-shirt combinations for men, with enough picks at every price point and to satisfy every taste and style. Let me know what you think of my picks on Twitter. Cheers!

As I’ve said in the past, covering lots of ground in the menswear world can be daunting. Allow me to help, particularly with my recent guide to the best menswear to buy now at Taylor Stitch. We’re talking versatile, well-made men’s style essentials you can either buy or pre-fund now, and then wear to your heart’s content season after season. Once again, if you take the plunge with menswear from Taylor Stitch, let me know on Twitter. That’ll wrap up today’s’ Friday Read. Enjoy the weekend, my friends!

The Friday Read: A Huckberry Giveaway, New Myles Apparel Swimwear & A Caldera + Lab Review

We’ve certainly got lots of ground to cover as we dive into another edition of The Friday Read (your weekend guide to the best menswear sales, reads and more), so let’s not waste another second. I’ll start off my weekly recap by drawing your attention to the frankly incredible Huckberry One-Bag Travel Giveaway running this weekend. From now through August 1st at 11:59 p.m. PST, all orders placed are in the running for this Huckberry giveaway, and here’s the scoop. The insanely cool Huckberry One-Bag Travel Giveaway provides you with some exceptional gear, to say the least. You’ll get a One-Bag Travel Kit worth $1,300, featuring the Black Diamond Stonehauler Bag (of course), a Proof 72-Hour Merino Polo and the exceptional Proof Rover Pants, the Proof Meridian Pant, the Myles Apparel Everyday Shorts (more on the brand in a second!) and the much-loved Naglev Unico Hikers. On top of that, you’ll also get an AirBNB certificate worth $500. It’s all the gear you need for an incredible weekend getaway, so why not pick up a favorite Huckberry essential and give yourself a chance at winning?

That’s not the only exciting thing I’ve got my eye on this weekend in the menswear world (and beyond). A word to the wise: The time is now to buy a breezy cabana shirt, seeing as I wrote about my favorite cabana shirts at Maxim this week. It’s similar to a style I’ll be wearing this weekend to stay cool in the Brooklyn heat. For another prime menswear pairing, consider picking up the Flint and Tinder 365 Pants via my blog post guide to, well, your new favorite pants. And if you could use something to listen to along the way, consider hitting “Subscribe” on my twice-weekly music, menswear and craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief. I’m sure you’ll find something to enjoy in there. We’re just getting started this weekend, so let’s talk more shopping, grooming and menswear below. Cheers!

The Good

Try Caldera + Lab ASAP

  • Still on the hunt for some of the coolest swim trunks for men this season? I think you’re in luck, because the new Myles Apparel Swim Collection just dropped, and it’s got two standout swim trunks for guys up for grabs. There’s the Sutro Swim Trunk, a tailored and remarkably James Bond-esque pair of refined yet functional swim trunks, the kind that 007 himself would be proud to wear. You’re also able to snap up the Seacliff Swim Shorts, which are a neat hybrid short meant to be worn both in and out of the water. The sub-$80 pricing is agreeable, the versatility is much appreciated (I love the fact that you can wear the Sutro Swim Trunks to the beach bar), and the functionality is top-notch. Surf’s up, folks. Best of all is the fact that you can get 10 percent off with the code MYLES10. Happy shopping!

Shop the Myles Apparel Swim Collection ASAP

  • Here’s a fun way to close out today’s Friday Read. In search of some unique summer headwear, the kind that’s fashion-forward yet functional and just a bit unique? Step right up and head on over to The Manual to cruise through my guide to the best bucket hats for men, a nice way to switch up your headwear as you soak up some sun and surf.

Just this past Monday, I talked about where you should be shopping, and what you should be buying, right now. The answer is obvious, but it’s also worthy of closer inspection. It’s San Francisco-based Taylor Stitch, long one of my favorite menswear brands. I wrote all about the five best menswear picks to buy at Taylor Stitch, and you’d surely do well to check them out in a hurry. That’s all I’ve got for you today. One last fun reminder: If it’s weekend listening you seek, there’s my newsletter The Style Guide In Brief, but I’d also urge you to consider following me on Spotify. Here’s a playlist for all those WFH days and weekend hangs ahead. Cheers and thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: Mack Weldon’s New Gear, The Tie Bar’s Semi-Annual Sale & The Best Sub-$200 Watches

Mack Weldon | Reinventing Men's Basics

Stepping into the weekend with a one-stop shop in mind for your favorite menswear just got a bit easier – at least, it looks that way to me when I check out the Mack Weldon Daily Wear System. Coming from a retailer as excellent as Mack Weldon, it’s a perfect system to consider as we kick off another Friday Read. You see, be it the brand’s excellent boxer briefs, comfortable socks, efficient and performance-minded buttondown shirts or the Mack Weldon Tech Chinos that we talked about earlier this week, the NYC-based brand really is one that can help you do it all. Consider this a recommendation or an endorsement to get your weekend rolling the right way. If you haven’t yet checked out Mack Weldon, now is the perfect time. And as to some other recommendations for the weekend? Well, I’m glad you asked.

HELM Boots

I’m closing out a busy week after an upstate trip with Laphroaig Scotch, so I’m looking forward to catching up on reading and relaxing myself (but not too much – keep on reading!). The trip was a chance to test the brand’s latest offerings, and it was an homage to the fact that the famed distillery hosts a fly fishing festival every year in Scotland. From Tuesday’s “staycation” at the Arlo Midtown to a fly-fishing demo Wednesday morning and a lovely stay at the incredible Hutton Brickyards in Kingston, NY, it was a seriously unique trip the likes of which I’ve never been on. Although I wasn’t all that great at the tricky sport of fly fishing, I really enjoyed myself nonetheless!

HELM Boots

I’ve got another trip coming up sooner than you might think, as well — I’m hitting the road tomorrow for a one-night getaway to try out what should be an excellent bar and hotel combination, the Riggs Hotel Washington, D.C., which is properly reopening after a year and change of the pandemic. Go ahead and give me a follow on Instagram to keep up with the latest and greatest! And in the meantime, the rest of today’s Friday Read is yours for the taking. Cheers, my friends!

Restock Your Whole Wardrobe Via The Tie Bar's Semi-Annual Sale - InsideHook
  • Need a new dress shirt or tie as you head back to the office? Well, I’ve got just the solution for you. The Tie Bar’s Semi-Annual Sale is stocking and selling the best men’s dress shirts, ties and accessories for a return to the office and summer weddings aplenty, and they’re giving you discounts of up to 50 percent off all the while. Sounds like an ideal chance to stock up ASAP.
  • Here’s another reading recommendation for you this weekend. Summer brings with it plenty of opportunities to camp and explore the great outdoors. With that being said, you should certainly keep in mind the fact that you’re going to need a dependable jacket for all those pursuits on and off the trail. Head to The Manual to check out my guide to the best cheap North Face jacket deals this season. Good luck out there, folks.
  • I’ve been a fan of the excellent men’s lifestyle site Primer Magazine since 2012. The site covers everything a guy need to get dressed on the daily, live a fulfilling life, shop in style and decorate your apartment, and that’s why it was such a pleasure to cover the best men’s watches under $200. Give it a read and let me know what you think in the comments below.

That’ll wrap up today’s rather quick-hit Friday Read. Want something else to kick off your weekend with energy and spirit in mind? Head over to my twice-weekly newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief — a play off the title of this blog! — where I talk about my favorite new (and old) music, menswear, craft beer and more. If you like indie rock and indie pop, with the classics thrown in, then this is the right way to go (in my humble opinion!). Enjoy the weekend, stay safe and shop & read with style in mind, my friends!

The Friday Read: Classic Persol Sunglasses, New Todd Snyder Gear & Shinola’s Latest Launch

Persol Steve McQueen Sunglasses

Who else is looking ahead to the weekend in style, like our man Mr. McQueen up there? He’s wearing Persol sunglasses, a classic selection that the legendary actor helped take to the next level as far as classic appeal is concerned. Helpfully, you can add a bit of your own Steve McQueen flair to your summer wardrobe by heading over to UNCRATE and shopping the Persol 714 Steve McQueen Sunglasses in the UNCRATE Supply Shop. They’re about as good as it gets if you want truly legendary style, and I’m not just saying that. Give them a look for yourself, and then let me know on Twitter if you end up picking them up.

Satchel and Page

As luck would have it, I’ll be bringing my own pair of Persol 714 Steve McQueen Sunglasses with me on the road this weekend for stylish summer adventures. I’m making the trek back to Michigan for a bachelor party (congrats, Andrew!) and some time on the water — Lake Michigan, as luck would have it — plus plenty of home state beer. The tail end of my trip includes a stop in Grand Rapids, aptly known as Beer City, U.S.A. — I plan to check out some of the city’s finest breweries, including New Holland Brewing, before I hit the road back to New York City. You can read all about my trip, as it were, in my twice-weekly newsletter The Style Guide In Brief, where I cover music, menswear and craft beer, all at once. It’s just one of the recommended reads you should dive into to start your weekend. The rest of my top picks for this week are below, so get that Friday started right. Cheers, folks!

Todd Snyder menswear

  • I talked earlier this week about the best new menswear to buy from Todd Snyder (head here to read that post), and if you haven’t yet caught up with the latest and greatest from the esteemed designer, I’d say it’s about time you start. The Todd Snyder Indigo Surf Terry Sweatshirt in particular is a perfect layer for your next beach trip, with breezy, lightweight fabric construction and go-anywhere style to match. Don’t start up that beach bonfire without it.

Shinola Rambler

  • Now, don’t get me wrong: The Persol sunglasses featured at the start of this post are as cool as can be, without a doubt. But if you want to add a pair of shades to your collection that share some DNA with your favorite Shinola watch, you’d do well to check out the new Shinola Eyewear Collection, not to mention my rundown of the frames themselves for Maxim.com. I’m a big fan, and I hope to test out a pair sooner rather than later.
  • I’ve given you a shopping recommendation and a reading recommendation (remember, my newsletter is The Style Guide In Brief!), so what say I give you a music recommendation, too? I’ve started writing for the U.K.’s largest new music publication, the excellent The Line of Best Fit, and I couldn’t be more thrilled about it. Fans of The National and folk rocker Sufjan Stevens, like myself, will love the latest release from Ghostly Kisses. I wrote about it earlier this week for Best Fit’s New Music section, so give it a read and get plugged in!

Satchel and Page
Now, that’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read as I get ready to hit the road and enjoy the sun and the open air of Pure Michigan. Remember, hitting “Subscribe” on my newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, is definitely on your to-do list this weekend. And here’s one more item for your to-do list: Head to this #OOTD to get my guide on how to dress for the beach for guys this summer. It’ll have you covered from head-to-toe with style in mind. Happy shopping and enjoy the weekend, my friends!

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Basics, Summer Beer & the Best 4th of July Sales

My friends, you know what weekend is upon us. It’s 4th of July weekend, a patriotic occasion that calls for reflection on both our freedoms and what we can do better as a country (there’s a lot, and I know you don’t need me to tell you that, right?). It’s also a time to gather safely with friends and family, ideally with some of life’s greater pleasures close at hand (I’m talking about cold beer and menswear, of course). On that last front, you know where to go to get some of the best men’s style essentials for summer, don’t you? That’d be the well-stocked digital shelves of Huckberry, purveyors of everything you need to go from the trail to the town, and from town to the beach, and then back. It’s always worth shopping the Huckberry Sale Section, too — a lot of stellar gear is still up for grabs. In fact, you can get up to 50 percent off at Huckberry right now. It’s just one of more than a few of the best sales for the 4th of July, so keep on scrolling through below. A quick note: Huckberry isn’t the only major retailer offering up discounts. We’ll get into it more below, but the Filson Summer Clearing Sale gets you scores of deals on Filson classics, like the Filson Lightweight Alaskan Guide Shirt or the rugged Filson C.C.F. Watch Cap.

As for me, I’m going to try to spend only a bit of time coveting Huckberry menswear picks this weekend. I’m back in Brooklyn after a trip down to Florida — you can read more about my trip in my twice-weekly newsletter — and I’ve got some fun plans in store. As per tradition, whenever I’m in New York City for the 4th of July, I always make my way down to Coney Island to take in the sights and sounds — beer is also on the docket at Coney Island Brewery, of course. What’s on your agenda for the holiday weekend? I’ve got some last-minute writing to do for sites like Jacob Graye, plus this blog, but once that’s taken care of, I’ll be enjoying some much-needed time off. Check out the best menswear for the 4th of July, and the best 4th of July gear sales, below. Then kick back, relax, crack open a cold one and celebrate. Cheers and thanks for reading!

Men's jackets – Buy jackets – JACK WOLFSKIN

Alright, folks: Hopefully, you’re rolling into the weekend with some of the best Fourth of July sales top of mind from some of your favorite brands, be it a new American Giant partnership, a deal on the best adventure gear or the remarkable Taylor Stitch Peak of Summer Sale. Whichever one you choose to shop, I hope that gear makes its way to you in good time. And before I let you go, allow me to recommend one more must-read pick: My guide on how to wear a lightweight jacket is going to sort you out with breezy style in mind this season. Happy shopping and stay cool out there — and oh yeah, enjoy the 4th of July!

The Friday Read: Live Music with Elysian Brewing, Taylor Stitch Menswear & TUDOR’s New Watch

Taylor Stitch Clothing Review - Must Read This Before Buying

Quick, can you guess the brand featured above? If you guessed standout San Francisco menswear purveyors Taylor Stitch, you’re correct. They’re the perfect brand to lead into today’s Friday Read, where I give you plenty of gear and reading recommendations to head into the weekend. Going all the way back to 2015, (this blog’s second year), Taylor Stitch has been one of my favorite brands. They’ve got breezy short-sleeve shirts, expertly crafted chinos, durable chambray shirts and much more. Enough with the pleasantries, though: Just know that this is a brand to keep on your radar, in case it ever slipped off. I’m all about Taylor Stitch this weekend.

Speaking of weekends, well, I’m in Florida this weekend and once again getting some quality time with my dogs and my family. I’ll be back in Brooklyn for the Fourth of July holiday next week, which will certainly include a classic visit to Coney Island. Speaking of holiday weekends (which include quality menswear and beer), take this next suggestion and use it wisely. If you want your menswear and beer served up together, along with a sharp soundtrack, my menswear-music-craft beer newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, is surely the way to. go Hit Subscribe before tomorrow, because I send out a weekend dispatch (and a Tuesday pick-me-up dispatch, too). It’s fun and it’s free, as I always say, and it’s the right way to lead into the weekend. You know what else works to start the weekend off right? My reading and shopping picks below. Cheers, my friends.

  • If you’re anything like me, you’ve been sorely missing live music over these past, oh, 15 months or so. But slowly, surely, ever-so-slightly, shows are coming back. And to celebrate, pioneering Seattle brewery Elysian Brewing (celebrating 25 years this year!) is offering a seriously cool “Cheers to Live Music” program. Now through September 6th, anyone who purchases a ticket to a concert can get a nationwide rebate on a six-pack of Elysian Space Dust IPA or Elysian Contact Haze IPA between now and September 6th. That’s all summer long — how cool is that?? If you’re over 21, visit this Web site, fill out an online form and upload a photo or screenshot of your concert purchase receipt, PLUS the UPC and receipt of the Elysian Space Dust or Contact Haze six-pack. Then, boom. Rebate secured for free beer to enjoy before your next concert. It doesn’t get any better than that, folks.
  • Who doesn’t love some relaxing summer fun in the sun, right? It’s even better with a refreshing drink in your hand, plus a breezy and lightweight Tommy Bahama shirt, yes? Tommy Bahama is putting it all together with The Marlin Bar: Cocktails with Tommy Bahama book, which retails for $40, is packed with the brand’s signature drinks and appetizers, and lastly… is an homage to the Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar itself. The Marlin Bar is billed as a “cocktail party at your friend’s house,” with casual and eclectic, tropical flavors, and the new book should offer more of the same from one of the best retailers for men when it comes to laidback, breezy vibes. I can think of nothing better for summer… can you?
  • I’ve got one for all the fans of rugged and refined watches among us. TUDOR has long been a reliable source for some of the most exceptional watches on the planet, and that’s certainly the case with the brand’s latest release. I got to dive into the remarkable TUDOR Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze for Maxim. It’s a watch that’s made with innovative materials and a finish that’s going to age incredibly well over time. Read all about it now and put it on your style wish list.

Before you go, allow me to tell you about one more crucial piece of summer gear. When the sun goes down at night, or when the sun rises blazing before a day on the water, there’s one menswear essential you need: One of the best lightweight hoodies for men. Luckily, I’ve got you covered with my guide to the Wellen Seawool Hoodie here on the blog. Shop it at Huckberry, then layer up accordingly for summer adventures aplenty.

The Friday Read: Father’s Day Weekend, Summer Style Essentials & Timex x MadeWorn

My friends, welcome to another lovely summer Friday here in Brooklyn (and hopefully, wherever you happen to be, as well!). It’s a momentous weekend for several reasons, chief among them the fact that it’s Father’s Day weekend — perhaps you might be interested in shipping Dad a last-minute or post-Father’s Day gift from the always-outstanding Huckberry x Coors Golden Hour Series as shown above? After all, what could be a better gift for Dad than rugged menswear inspired by the spirit of creativity and cold beer? Plus, who doesn’t love a refreshing Coors — call it a guilty pleasure — on a hot summer’s day? That’s what I thought. Head to Huckberry to shop the full Huckberry x Coors collection and perhaps pick up some gear for yourself, too.

I’m looking forward to the weekend, and although I won’t be with my dad, I’ll actually be heading back down to sunny Florida early next week — just in time for an extended Father’s Day visit! I hope you’re able to spend quality time with loved ones, and safely, wherever they might be. I’ll also be staying busy this weekend, with some editing and writing for The Manual coming up for me on Saturday. I’ve also been working on some new Maxim stories (one of which is below!), and my latest Huckberry Journal entry is coming up soon, too. So with all that being said, I’ll be plenty busy.

It’s a change of pace from last weekend, when I trekked upstate courtesy of Eddie Bauer to put some stellar Eddie Bauer hiking gear to the test getting around the Catskills from the cozy confines of the Getaway Eastern Catskills outspot. As it were, you can read all about my trip — and subscribe! — at my twice-weekly music-menswear-craft beer newsletter called The Style Guide In Brief. I publish two times a week, and believe me when I say there’s something for everyone, from indie rock to rugged menswear. For now, I’ve also got a few items I think you’ll enjoy heading into the weekend. Enjoy the day, enjoy time with family and enjoy a proper summer weekend!

  • Hey now, here’s a fun one for both yourself and potentially for Dad as an added bonus or a little post-Father’s Day gift. Or actually, well, one heck of an upgraded Father’s Day gift. It’s the new Timex x MadeWorn collaboration that’s really caught my eye as of late, so much so that I covered it for Maxim. The collaboration pairs up the legendary watch brand with the vintage-revival team at MadeWorn, led by artist Blaine Halvorson, and the results really are something else. Shop Timex now to get your new favorite watch after reading my guide.
  • Call this one another fun gift for Dad or for yourself if you’ve been investing a bit in new records across the past few weeks and months. Urban Outfitters stocks and sells some of the best record players out there, the kind of easy and affordable pick-up that can add some color and a whole lot of great sound to your living room, your den or Dad’s home office, easily. A pro tip: Let him know the gift is on the way with a homemade certificate, and then buy a record or two for him to spin when it arrives (Urban Outfitters also sells records!). Easy as that!
  • I talked in my last Friday Read about another undeniably cool gift for Dad, or for anyone really: A new Sean Connery Framed Print from UNCRATE. Well, how about adding this exclusive Steve McQueen Boxing Print to your shopping cart from the always-well-stocked UNCRATE Supply Shop? It’s bold, it’s rugged, it’s iconic and it’ll make a heck of an impression hanging on any wall.

That’ll wrap up today’s Friday Read, and hopefully, you’ve got just enough time to check off a few very last-minute Father’s Day shopping pick-ups. What’s your favorite from the above, either for Dad or for yourself? I personally think the exclusive Steve McQueen Boxing Print is pretty epic, but that’s just me. Last but not least, if you want some shopping suggestions for yourself, check out my guide on how to wear a camp collar shirt this summer. That’s all for now, but you can check back here for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, and you can also hit “Subscribe” over at The Style Guide In Brief for more new content from me. Cheers to the weekend, folks!
