The Friday Read: The Best Beard Oil, The Buck Mason Gift Guide & A Leather Jacket Deal

‘Tis the season to stock up on gifts from Buck Mason.

Welcome to today’s Friday Read, folks — we’re here to close out the week, launch on into the weekend and look great while doing so. If you’ve been reading the blog as of late (or over the years, to be more accurate), you’re probably well aware that Buck Mason is making some of the finest menswear around — with a few selections from the Buck Mason Gift Guide above serving as proof of that commitment. From leather jackets to henleys to the best men’s shirts, the brand just gets it right when it comes to old-school style, top-notch fabrication and agreeable fits, at least in my book. And for the stylish guy in your life, that’s why I’m recommending you shop the Buck Mason Gift Guide heading into the weekend. Heck, you just might find an item or two you want for yourself, and that’s truly a gift that keeps on giving.

So, that’s a shopping recommendation for you to start your weekend. If you’re in search of other recommendations — say, what to read, listen, shop and sip — I’ve got just the ticket: Subscribe (if you please!) to my newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief, to get two weekly E-mails (free of charge!) covering music, menswear, craft beer and more. It’s a fun diversion for me, and I hope you feel the same way. Elsewhere, be sure to keep an eye on my bylines at GearMoose and Maxim.com to stay up to speed on the latest and greatest in the worlds of menswear and gear. For now, I’ll cast you out into the rest of today’s Friday Read. Be sure to come back through tomorrow for our weekly Saturday Style Pick. Alright, let’s get to it!

  • Over these past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to test out AvitaSen Black Seed Beard Oil, a new brand on my radar that I’d certainly recommend you check out. Particularly if you’re just growing a beard or want to nourish your quarantine mane, then some of the best beard oil can go a long way. AvitaSen uses high-quality natural ingredients and a careful approach that results in a beard oil that can provide plenty of bang for your buck, so add it to your grooming routine ASAP.
  • I talked recently on the blog about one of the best leather jackets that I’ve had the pleasure of trying out: The Angel Jackets Ausin Cafe Racer Leather Jacket. If you’ve had your eye on that jacket or something similar, you’re in luck. Angel Jackets is offering 35 percent off men’s leather jackets, and you get an extra $25 off with the code BF25 through the month of December. Talk about a great chance to get a great deal on a new leather jacket, right? Right.
  • Let’s talk everyday carry essentials for a second, shall we? The WESN x Craighill Microblade is a surefire winner as far as adding performance and functionality — in a nicely sized offering — to your EDC rotation, and I had the chance to cover it for GearMoose. It helps that WESN builds its products in Detroit, a fitting homage to the kind of craftsmanship that makes my home state of Michigan really “go,” if you will. Well-done to both brands.

We’ll wrap it up on a high note here as we head into a holiday weekend. To follow along with my Brooklyn escapades, be sure to follow me on Instagram. And in the meantime, I’ll leave you with one last weekend dressing guide. If you’ve been searching for advice on how to bundle up in style this season, you’d do very well indeed to check out this #OOTD. With all that being said, happy shopping and sipping today and beyond. Thanks for reading!

The Thursday Buy: This Shearling Jacket from MR. PORTER Is a Seasonal Splurge Worth Buying

MR. PORTER review

A serious wardrobe upgrade that looks truly great any way you wear it.

What’s the first thing you think of when you think of MR. PORTER? Is it luxury menswear at prices both accessible and investment-worthy? It should be, especially as we roll into the holiday season — the holidays are indeed different this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your best foot forward in other ways when you (safely) exit the house. MR. PORTER has long been known for stocking and selling some of the best men’s jackets on the planet, from retailers far and wide — and its own in-house line MR. P is nothing to sneeze at, either. This MR. P Shearling-Trimmed Bomber Jacket just might take the cake as far as seasonal splurges and a great way to treat yourself heading into the holidays (if you feel so inclined). Make no mistake, this rugged-yet-refined shearling bomber jacket falls squarely within the realm of “investment-level outerwear,” seeing as you’d be ponying up more than $500 for a jacket that might not be a daily go-to. And yet, who’s to say you can’t rock this jacket on the daily, especially with staples like dark denim, a grey crewneck sweatshirt and brown leather moc toe boots?

SHOP: The MR. P Shearling-Trimmed Bomber Jacket

A super-premium outerwear upgrade to wear all winter long.

It’s a one-of-a-kind offering in a seasonally friendly color that features an internal pocket for storage of EDC essentials, plus outer flap pockets to handle small holiday items (or a flask, perhaps). Call it one of the best jackets for men if you value staying warm in style, or call it a true splurge, but either way, there’s no denying the type of daily style and value it’ll offer. And you can even find ways to dress up the MR. P Shearling-Trimmed Bomber Jacket, perhaps with grey wool trousers, the aforementioned brown leather moc toe boots and a white Oxford shirt for day-to-night holiday style. When it comes down to it, that’s all you can ask for from one of the best men’s jackets, and that’s all you should need to ask. Cheers, my friends.

Style Pick of the Week: Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater

Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck 2

A classic and cool sweater made from top-notch materials.

On the hunt for one of the best sweaters for men this holiday season (and beyond)? If you ask me, I think your search just got a little less comlicated, because the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is here to solve your winter layering problems in effective, refined and surprisingly affordable style. We’re talking about one of the best sweaters under $100 for men here (it clocks in at $98), and it’s super helpful that said sweater is sold by Huckberry. That gives it a mark of quality and a high bar to clear, but again, the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is one-of-a-kind in its own right, from the premium fabric to the no-fuss crewneck design. The crewneck design, in fact, means you can wear this refined sweater on its own atop a long-sleeve T-shirt for a more laidback look, and yet it might be at its best with a classic Oxford shirt or a warm flannel shirt for added warmth and holiday-ready style. Yes indeed, a piece like the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is subtly stylish and yet seriously cool in its own way, and that makes it a highly covetable winter wardrobe addition.

SHOP: The Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater

One of three versatile colorways in which you can snag your new favorite sweater.

As mentioned above, it helps that this versatile sweater comes in three highly adaptable colors, each of which could be the building block of a successful holiday ensemble. Team the Charcoal color with everything from tan chinos and an Oxford shirt to dark blue denim, brown leather chukka boots and a light blue chambray shirt underneath. Either of those looks should work swimmingly this holiday season. It’s also quite helpful that the Wills Speckled Merino Crewneck Sweater is made with, well, merino fabric for the ultimate in versatility. Merino regulates your temperature and acts as an anti-microbial fabric, all the better to ensure you get multiple rounds of wear out of this standout sweater. Again, you can’t top the sub-$100 price tag, either. And if I were you, I just might look to snag multiple colorways of what just might be your new favorite sweater. Who’s onboard with that? If you end up picking up this piece, let me know on Twitter.

If you’ve got some downtime on your hands, I recommend you hit subscribe on my newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief. It’s a twice-weekly supplement to this blog, diving deeper into three of my passions: Music, menswear and craft beer (or whiskey, or coffee), all centered around a featured song of the week and themed picks (think a song by The Killers, and some Brandon Flowers-inspired menswear). You’ll get it every Tuesday and Saturday if you so choose, and right in your inbox! OK, that’s all on the newsletter front for now. Here are the rest of my shopping and reading picks for your weekend. Cheers!

See Now, Buy Now: The Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket is the Perfect Winter Layer

Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket

A rugged shirt jacket that’s going to become your new go-to layer.

If I know one thing, it’s that you need to gear up for winter accordingly, seeing as it’s December and all, and you need to do so with one brand: The unstoppable San Francisco-based gear purveyors at Taylor Stitch. You know the brand for its high-quality leather jackets, chinos and now, you know it for the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket, one of the best shirts for winter. It’s a fan favorite, it’s one of my favorite shirts from Taylor Stitch, and it’s now back and better than ever in an eye-catching colorway that’s absolutely perfect for the holiday season ahead. Perhaps it’s the Clifford Red color or perhaps it’s the fact that the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket is part shirt, part jacket and seriously stylish either way … but you really can’t go wrong with this rugged and burly “shacket,” as it were. Of course, it’s also available in a Deep Navy color (as shown below), but the Clifford Red is my personal favorite.

SHOP: The Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket

Taylor Stitch review

Another must-have colorway when it comes to this essential shirt jacket — right?

The use of wool and reclaimed fibers in building this tough shirt jacket makes it stylish, warm and sustainable, all at once. Plus, the brand’s California collar (a TS signature) makes it more like a classic flannel shirt than a hard-wearing work shirt. However, oversized flap chest pockets mean you really can wear this shirt jacket to tackle tough projects and haul your everyday carry essentials around without missing a beat. It’s trim, and yet cut so that you can layer everything from a Taylor Stitch henley to a Taylor Stitch Oxford shirt underneath it, in case you feel like swapping out your traditional blazer or cardigan (which you should certainly try for the holiday season!). And of course, because it’s a hybrid piece and shouldn’t be too incredibly heavy, the brand says you can even wear it on into the spring months. But for now, as the cold confines of winter approach, the Taylor Stitch Maritime Shirt Jacket is going to be your new go-to layer.
