The Friday Read: The Best Long-Sleeve Shirts, Rugged Fall Gear from Outerknown & the Best Pomades

Levi's Wellthread X Outerknown Clean up Dirty Denim | The Manual

Folks, if you caught last Friday’s weekly recap, perhaps you’re familiar with the brand featured above. That’d be sustainable menswear brand Outerknown, always a reliable company to shop if you want eco-conscious menswear at agreeable prices. They’re my recommended brand to send you into the weekend, of course, and although its Warehouse Sale ended earlier this week, there’s really not a bad time to shop the Kelly Slater-founded brand. Consider that my first recommendation in a weekly recap post that’s positively packed with ’em. As you’ll see below (and as you know if you follow me on Instagram), I’ve been staying busy with menswear bylines aplenty at some of my favorite sites — hopefully, these picks will guide you when it comes to your dressing and grooming routines.

As for me, I’m going to enjoy a Brooklyn weekend with hot coffee and cold beer at the ready, with some stops lined up at a few of my favorite haunts. What’s on your weekend to-do list? To get things rolling the right way, how about some shopping and reading? Yes, indeed. Take a look and let’s get to it.

Men's Sweats | Mott & Bow | Elevated Basics. Grounded Price.
  • Here’s a very apt style and shopping suggestion for you with a laidback weekend on the horizon. Earlier this week, I wrote all about the best sweatpants for fall and winter here on the blog, and they come from a brand that makes your favorite jeans — that’d be Mott and Bow. Get your new sweats for this weekend right here.
  • Have you started to head back to the office yet? Every now and again? When you do, even if your office leans more casual, it pays off to look and feel your best. That starts with your routine, which can get quite the nice upgrade if you check out my guide to the best pomades for men these days. Head to AskMen for the latest, folks.
  • Layering is of the essence in the fall and winter months, particularly when the thermostat starts to drop. That’s where another menswear guide of mine comes into play. Over at The Manual, I’m offering up my top picks for the best long-sleeve shirts for men, with something in every category and price point.

Before you roll into the weekend, I’ll point you in the right direction — in terms of the best new boots for men, that is. I wrote all about the latest iteration of the Huckberry x Danner Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots, a pair of boots that simply can’t be topped in terms of comfort, quality and style points. You won’t want to take these off – trust me, folks. With all that being said, here’s to the weekend, an upcoming Style Pick of the Week and cold, fresh beer. Cheers!

The Thursday Buy: The Rhodes Winslow Boots from Huckberry are the Most Versatile Boots to Wear This Season

Now’s the perfect time to lace up your new favorite pair of boots — if you’ve taken care of shopping for the boots in question, that is to say. If not, well, you’re just in time to stock up on some of the best men’s boots, a pair that’s as stellar, rugged and stylish as they come. That’d be the Rhodes Winslow Boots, one heck of a pair of stylish leather lace-up boots that check all the right boxes this season and well beyond. Checking off the boxes, after all, is something of a Huckberry specialty, and the good folks at the San Francisco-based retailer set out to make a set of workwear-inspired boots with plenty of knowledge and a sturdy vision in mind. You see, the Rhodes Footwear line is a lot like the rest of Huckberry’s standout offerings, including the best waxed trucker jacket on the market.

Rhodes debuted in the fall of 2018 with a focus on making subtly stylish, well-priced and expertly made boots, mostly of the dress and chukka varieties, but the latest and greatest launch is, again, workwear boots that offer something slightly lighter, slightly more casual and still plenty wearable all the same. The Rhodes Winslow Boots are an ideal pair of boots to buy right now if you want to ease into the colder months without reverting right away to snow boots, which is as it should be, after all. These toe the line (literally) between bulky work or snow boots and less substantial (but no less essential) chukka boots. Think of the Rhodes Winslow Boots like an excellent middle ground, and some of the best men’s boots for fall, right down to the small details.

Those small details, naturally, are what Huckberry has worked so hard to get right, and with the Rhodes Winslow Boots, that effort shines through. For under $200, you get a pair of boots made with rich full-grain roughout leather designed to only get better with age (these are some of the best boots for men, after all). The upper totals 5 inches, so they aren’t outrageously high — more like a mid-boot than an ankle or chukka boot, but again, no less useful for the fall and winter months.

The Rhodes Winslow Boots are also built atop a soft and springy Meramec outsole, which gives them less traction in the snow but provides a mighty smooth ride in plenty of other types of weather, or simply on blustery fall days with crunching leaves underfoot. The boots are also handcrafted in the footwear mecca that is Leon, Mexico, another place where plenty of the best boots for men are made, season after season. Because they’re a plain-toe boot with a wedge outsole, you’re going to get plenty of wear out of ’em with all of your favorite casual style essentials, from faded denim, a classic henley and the best waxed trucker jacket to a chambray shirt and tan chinos for a nice blend of high-low style. You can even wear them this holiday season (and they’d be great boots to wear for Thanksgiving) — just add a soft, slim-fit flannel shirt and tailored blue jeans to hit the mark, folks. The next time you need a pair of reliable-as-can-be leather boots, the Rhodes Winslow Boots are going to come through in the clutch.

See Now, Buy Now: This Satchel & Paige Waxed Briefcase Is a New Everyday Carry Must-Have

As we all return slowly but surely to the road, be it through a fall road trip, a stint back in the office or simply a day spent out and about around town, perhaps you’ve realized your everyday carry essentials have been lacking. Particularly when it comes to staying organized in style, it can be a tall order to return to your daily routine without the right gear, and that’s where the remarkable Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief comes into play. It’s a serious upgrade to whatever bag you might be using now (unless of course, that bag is made by the heirloom leather goods purveyors at Satchel & Paige), and it’s one of the best everyday carry essentials for hauling those must-have items to the office or to a day working remotely at your favorite coffee shop (your call these days, folks). Like all bags and leather goods from the Dallas-based brand, its design is rooted in history and its modern look is rooted in functionality, form and some of the best materials you’ve seen put into a lineup of EDC goods.

It’s built with the same approach that Satchel & Paige takes with its full lineup of gear, which was first inspired by a map case used by the founder’s grandfather in World War II. Here, the Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief is also inspired by military bags and is made in Italy from remarkable materials (more on those in a second).

The Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief simply looks incredible and will only get better over time, thanks to the green 20oz. waxed waterproof canvas, which should prove burly and substantial while aging nicely (and keeping your everyday carry essentials safe, of course). It’s lined in handsome Tobacco suede and finished off on the outside with copper rivets for maximum durability at key stress points. Naturally, the exceptional Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief is certainly built to last. Vegetable-tanned French Cowhide leather should also prove thick and durable yet supple, yet retaining a slim profile that’s key to your commute, your road trip or your next flight as a carry-on.

The Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief doesn’t cut any corners, and that’s reflected in the fact that the laptop pocket in the center is strategically placed to avoid scratching your laptop. How’s that for thoughtful, well-executed design? Two exterior pockets also provide easy access to EDC goods, and the included shoulder strap makes it even easier to haul the Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief around town or across the country. What’s more, it’s polished enough to take to the office as you dress in business casual style, but it’ll look right at home with more rugged ensembles, like a flannel shirt layered over a henley with your favorite pair of jeans. Try doing that with a regular leather briefcase, ehh? Point being, the Satchel & Paige Aviator Brief is unlike anything in your everyday carry rotation, so level up and invest in the best now.

The Tuesday Steal: Get These French Terry Sweats from Mott and Bow, The Brand That Makes Your Favorite Jeans

If that headline initially caught you off-guard, allow me to explain. Mott and Bow, the brand that makes some of your favorite jeans (and perhaps some of the best jeans for men on the market) has branched out into more casual wear in recent years, and if you’ve yet to take the plunge and try out the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants, the cozy climes of fall are as good a time as any. After all, it actually makes quite a bit of sense that a brand laser-focused on getting things right when it comes to pants is able to successfully branch out into another crucial category, and a category that’s all the more crucial as temperatures drop and warm, casual-yet-polished style is of the utmost importance. And you know what’s even better? You can take the leap on these stylish French Terry sweatpants at a lower price than you might expect. Although these tailored men’s sweatpants retail for $89, you can take 10 percent off your first order at Mott and Bow with the code BEAU10, exclusive to readers of this very blog. Not a bad deal at all if you’ve been looking for the best sweatpants for men and yet waiting to pull the trigger, right?

The process behind developing the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants isn’t all that different from how the brand makes its much-loved jeans (head here for a full Mott and Bow review), and that’s great news all around. In fact, Mott and Bow takes just as much care with its apparel, like one of the best sweaters for men, as its full line of well-fitting jeans. When it comes to the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants, it’s all about the fabrication and fit. Here, that means that 100 percent French Terry Peruvian cotton — the kind found in old-school athletic sweats, but much softer and more modern — is the star of the show. See, I told you these were some of the best sweatpants for men, right?

The Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants are designed to be a medium-weight pair of sweatpants, so they’re apt for casual days at home or on the road, a quick coffee run or — especially in a dark, neutral color — a casual weekend outing. Because the fit of the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants is tapered and not baggy, and because they’re also free from typical logos, they don’t look half-bad with canvas high-top sneakers before snow starts to pile up (and yes, I’ve worn them on the road myself). The Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants are as nice a pair of slim-fit sweatpants as you’ll find, and as luck would have it, you can easily wear ’em with one of Mott and Bow’s cotton T-shirts for plenty of relaxed yet cool weekend comfort.

When it comes to sweatpants, the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants are sharp, not sloppy, particularly in one of four crisp, neutral colorways. It’s always a solid bet to have a pair of Mott and Bow men’s jeans close at hand, especially for business casual days at the office, but when the time comes to kick back and relax, the Mott and Bow Hooper French Terry Sweatpants are as reliable a laidback style move as any. Remember to take 10 percent off your first order at Mott and Bow with the code BEAU10, then experience the value and quality that is Mott and Bow sweatpants. Happy lounging, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: Huckberry x Danner’s Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots Are Back In Stock Now

There are certain menswear collaborations that are both too good to pass up and entirely ingenious and innovative at the same time. Take the much-loved, highly coveted and fast-selling Huckberry x Danner partnership, a meeting of the minds between two West Coast brands that perfectly epitomizes the spirit of adventure and rugged style. More importantly, it’s given us the Huckberry x Danner Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots, some of the best men’s boots — and newly restocked in Huckberry’s ever-so-well-curated selection of men’s footwear. It’s a natural partnership between the San Francisco retailer, which already makes pieces like your favorite waxed trucker jacket, and it only makes sense that they’d choose to partner once again on another of Huckberry x Danner boots. In fact, this partnership first launched in early 2019, and sold out quickly (to say the least). Now, the Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots are back and better than ever — and selling quickly once again.

Even an initial glance at the Huckberry x Danner Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots shows why they’re a hot-selling commodity — and a perfect addition to what’s hopefully a wardrobe stocked with plenty of other Huckberry menswear essentials, right? No doubt. These rugged men’s hiking boots are surprisingly springy and lightweight, making them perfect to wear for all manner of seasonal pursuits (but especially exploring a new city, taking a park stroll or visiting your favorite brewery. Take it from this writer: The Huckberry x Danner Vertigo 917 Gold Rush Boots are some of the most comfortable boots for men I’ve ever worn.

And luckily, the Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots are a terrific value for the style and utility you get out of ’em. They’re built with a dependable, flexible Vibram outsole, which also features the use of a rubber compound for added traction and proprietary functionality. Whether navigating slippery sidewalks or cobblestone streets, the Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots are as reliable and utilitarian as can be. The rich full-grain leather upper, designed to break in handsomely over time, just so happens to be waterproof and made to take on the elements (as I found when I tested out my boots exploring rainy Vancouver back when the partnership first dropped).

The frankly remarkable Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots are also more sleek in form than traditional hiking boots, not unlike your favorite pair of sneaker boots, for instance. GORE-TEX lining also helps keep your feet dry, while the boots themselves sit atop a new last that updates the Danner 971 – hence the new name Vertigo 917 adorning the stylish and useful-as-can-be Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots. These boots are perhaps best worn with expertly faded jeans, a thermal henley and your Huckberry waxed trucker jacket, but they can pull double-duty if needed with a pair of slim Huckberry chinos and a stretch Oxford shirt if need be. If it’s not clear by now, well, the Huckberry x Danner Gold Rush Boots are some of the coolest, most versatile boots you can buy — and they won’t be around for long, so act accordingly and snag a pair today.

Style Pick of the Week: Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket – The Best Trucker Jacket for Seasonal Layering

There’s the popular adage about leaving something better off if “it ain’t broke,” and then there’s the Todd Snyder approach to menswear, which involves taking the brand’s most popular menswear essentials and making them even better. That’s what the famed NYC menswear designer has done here with the Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket, a hard-wearing upgrade of the famed Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket, traditionally made from soft suede. The newest version of the iconic trucker jacket, slimmed down and made modern by the inimitable designer, is both rugged and refined, as many of Snyder’s best pieces are (take the Todd Snyder x Champion collaboration, which turns athletic wear into styles cool enough to wear to the office).

The Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket is just the latest and greatest upgrade to hit the brand’s digital shelves, and it’s worth calling out for several reasons, first and foremost among them the fact that the waxed cotton iteration of the Todd Snyder Dylan Jacket is nearly 50 percent less than the original Dylan Jacket. Is your interest piqued yet? It should be, but the list of pros goes on and on.

The Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket checks off every box you’d expect from a designer like Todd Snyder, starting with the tough-as-nails construction. It’s made in England using 100 percent cotton that’s waxed and treated by British Millerain, makers of some of the finest weather-ready fabrics on the planet. The Olive color is highly versatile and just so happens to be a perfect shade for fall: Pair it with indigo denim, tan chinos or even dark brown or navy corduroy trousers with ease. Plus, it’s finished off with a blanket lining for added warmth, while the contrasting moleskin collar calls to mind other classic British waxed jackets.

Yes indeed, the Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket has plenty going for it, including that low price (compared to the original), and the refined details you only find at Todd Snyder. Last but not least, because it’s a trucker jacket, it’s a piece of outerwear that’s for more than just show — use the front button and side hip pockets to carry your EDC with ease. When you need it the most (like on a rainy fall day or a chilly winter morning), the Todd Snyder English Waxed Dylan Jacket steps right up and delivers. Cheers to the season ahead, my friends.

The Friday Read: The Best Denim Overshirts, Outside Lands 2021 & The Best Outerknown Menswear

If a fall weekend is on the horizon — which it assuredly is — then there’s one thing you need to do. Well, at least one thing. First and foremost, check out some of the best sustainable menswear on the planet by way of Outerknown, the rugged-yet-versatile clothing brand founded by surfing legend Kelly Slater. Outerknown makes some of my favorite pieces in my fall menswear rotation, including the best-selling Outerknown Blanket Shirt in a wide array of colors. It gets even better beyond that: Outerknown is running the Outerknown Warehouse Sale right now, giving you up to 60 percent off past-season favorites. It’s a great way to get a standout deal on some of the best fall menswear and more. It’s the sort of sale I’ll be shopping, especially as I take it easy this weekend and watch some Michigan State football from Brooklyn.

I’ll be taking it easy this weekend namely because, well, I was more than busy last weekend, trekking out West covering the excellent Outside Lands Music Festival as one of the many hats I wear. It was my first trip to San Fran in seven years, as I noted in the last edition of the Friday Read and in the most recent entry in my music/menswear newsletter. You should head to Atwood Magazine to catch my full preview — and recap — but let me say that it was an absolutely stellar weekend to be in San Francisco, complete with sunny weather, excellent sets from luminaries like Vampire Weekend and Sharon Van Etten, and even some excellent local beer from Anchor Brewing. I can’t recommend the festival enough, in short. For now though, it’s time for me to power through some end-of-week writing for the Huckberry Journal (and more). As for yourself, here’s to starting your own weekend properly with some of my tips for the best fall men’s style gear on the market. Let’s get to it!

Courtesy of AskMen.
  • I mentioned above that we’d cover the best rugged fall menswear, and allow me to make another suggestion on that front. You should certainly head to AskMen to read my guide on the best denim overshirts for hard-wearing, casual-yet-functional layering this season — it’s that simple, folks.
  • Here’s hoping that you’ve been keeping up with the goings-on here on the blog, but if not, I’m going to point you back towards my Wednesday post examining one of the best sweaters for fall and winter. Of course, the sweater in question comes from Taylor Stitch, and it’s as cozy and reliable as you need it to be right now.
  • If you love travel, and if you’ve been loving a bit of travel — slowly but surely, the right way — here’s one for you. I had the chance in September to head to Detroit to A) See a rock show by Julien Baker whilst visiting old college friends and B) Check out the absolutely wonderful Shinola Hotel in the process. The hotel is elegant, refined, perfectly crafted and quite the ideal encapsulation of the Shinola lifestyle overall. On that note, here’s the full recap of my experience at Maxim — get yourself to Shinola and Detroit when you get the chance — I endorse it wholeheartedly!

I’ll leave you with one last style tip to head into the weekend. If it’s a laidback, casual weekend pullover you need — especially one on sale for under $100 — then Wellen is the way to go. This week’s Tuesday Steal covers the best fall weekend pullover on sale right now. Cheers to some fall weather and fall fun — and fall menswear, of course! Thanks for reading, my friends.

The Thursday Buy: The Shinola Guardian Watch is the Best Dress Watch to Buy Right Now

Is there any time like the present to pick up one of the best men’s leather watches (or perhaps, add it to your holiday wish list)? Not quite, which is why we’re here today with another standout Thursday Buy recommendation to guide you towards this season with a stylish leather watch in tow. It’s coming your way courtesy of Shinola, the much-loved and simply outstanding Detroit-based maker of lovely, refined watches, beautiful home goods, leather wares and much more. The watch in question today, the Shinola Guardian Watch, isn’t quite as well-known as its everyday counterpart, the famed Shinola Runwell Watch, but that doesn’t make it any less essential in terms of a cool and instantly iconic watch to add to your collection. Yes indeed, the Shinola Guardian Watch (so named for the famed Guardian Building in Detroit) is crisp, refined and naturally made to be worn with fine tailoring, making it one of the best dress watches you can buy this instant.

Helpfully, it’s a great time of year to add one of the best men’s dress watches to your rotation, with holiday parties and gatherings on the horizon. Of course, the Shinola Guardian Watch wears quite well any day of the week, what with its clean lines, its distinctive sandblasted stainless case with a throwback-inspired rounded square dial design, and plenty of on-point details. The Shinola Guardian Watch is a more recent introduction to the brand’s well-reviewed line of watches, but it’s no less worthy of consideration as you shop to expand (or start!) your watch rotation.

The design specs are exactly what you’d expect from a brand like Shinola, which takes great care to assemble its watches with pride in Detroit. It’s a sight to behold, and it starts with the Swiss Argonite movement that the team builds in Detroit. That makes this a quartz watch, but again, for the value this stylish leather dress watch provides, that’s not a bad thing at all (it retails for either $675 or $725 at Shinola). In any of the three striking color and strap combinations, the Shinola Guardian Watch is a surefire winner (I’m especially a fan of the handsome Midnight Blue option shown above). The sapphire crystal on the dial provides durability (it’s second only to diamond in terms of material hardness), yet another way in which Shinola provides excellent value for your hard-earned cash.

And helpfully, the Shinola Guardian Watch is so crisp and classic, you can wear it with holiday style ensembles (like a tailored flannel shirt, a shawl cardigan and dark blue jeans) as readily as you can wear it with a winter wool suit or a tan herringbone blazer. Heck, you could even add the Shinola Guardian Watch to a more rugged fall style ensemble (think a waxed trucker jacket and your favorite henley) if need be. An eye-catching leather strap with raised stitching finishes off every iteration of the Shinola Guardian Watch, which is ideal — you can’t go wrong Shinola, no matter which way you look at it. Happy shopping, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: You Can Wear this Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater Anywhere This Season

The Double Knit Sweater in Charcoal | Taylor Stitch

There are certain times this fall (and this holiday season) when you’re going to want to go more casual — lounging around on a weekend, catching up on afternoon football — and certain times when you’re going to want to step things up a notch. This is where one of the best men’s sweaters, a sweater you truly can wear anywhere at all, comes into play. It’s the simply named, highly effective and always stylish Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater, made with an innovative fabric blend built to go the distance. It’s here, crucially, just in time for all those instances when you need a layer you can rock with anything, and for when you need a layer that can sometimes pull double duty (as in, wear this Taylor Stitch sweater to Thanksgiving dinner, then wear it the next day with some Taylor Stitch sweats for digital Black Friday shopping).

Sound too good to be true? Well, we’re talking about Taylor Stitch after all, San Francisco-based purveyors of everything from the best fall weekend pants to one of the most rugged flannel shirts on the market. They’ve perfected the art of versatile, slightly rugged and plenty classic menswear, and this double knit sweater (more on the fabric blend in a moment) is certainly no exception to that rule.

The Double Knit Sweater in Forest - Classic Men's Clothing

As crazy as it might seem, the Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater really is like no other sweater out there, and it comes down to the care with which the brand has built this investment-level sweater. It retails for $188, but when you consider how it’s made, you’ll understand. You see, Taylor Stitch used a blend of wool and cotton, plus rayon, poly and spandex, to deliver a classic-looking crewneck sweater that’s actually more innovative than you might expect at first glance. The interior uses viscose and polyester for a finish that’s smooth, not scratchy, meaning you could likely wear the Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater atop a short-sleeve T-shirt (perhaps the Taylor Stitch Heavy Bag Tee) if absolutely needed.

And on the outside, the Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater uses a ribbed collar and cuffs to keep the fit trim and clean, plus a blend of wool and cotton for warmth. You can certainly layer this shirt atop one of Taylor Stitch’s shirts for a crisp, office or holiday-party look. But because this is Taylor Stitch here, this subtly stylish sweater won’t look out of place with tailored joggers for casual weekend days aplenty. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the Taylor Stitch Double Knit Sweater really is one of the most solid sweaters you can snag right now, and in any color (pick from Forest, British Khaki or Charcoal). Happy layering, my friends, and thanks for reading!
