Style Pick of the Week: Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots

Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots

Classic, stylish and easy-to-wear chukka boots via Astorflex, shown at the top right with travel essentials from Owen and Fred, Abercrombie & Fitch, Huckberry, Nautica, Herschel Supply Co. and Electric Sunglasses.

Is it just me, or is it time for a seasonal footwear upgrade with a pair of the best boots for men? Think: Something that’s not a sneaker, but not a burly leather work boot that’s uncomfortable to wear — something that’ll work for nearly every style situation, from a casual weekend barbecue to a stylish road trip. Who’s with me? Perhaps the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots come to mind — no? I recently took my own pair on a spring road trip to Indiana, and can definitely vouch for them.  They’re an updated take on the classic desert boot, crafted with a crepe sole, high-quality suede and the type of easygoing silhouette that pairs just as well with your favorite chinos as it does with slim light wash denim on breezy summer days. In fact, I’d hope you recognize the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots as seen above from a few posts on The Style Guide.

Namely, the rich Dark Khaki colorway seen here will work as you dress for Sunday brunch or look for ways to upgrade your casual shirt — don’t think you should shelve all of your chukka boots entirely just because the thermostat starts to climb. And know that these Astorflex chukka boots also come in the equally versatile Stone and Grey colorways. Indeed, with a blend of comfort, style and accessibility, the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots — just like the brand’s Astorflex Chelsea Boots —  are a seasonal must-have in any color. Trust me: That goes for spring, summer and fall. Seriously, keep them on hand to wear with a rugged chambray shirt and dark selvedge denim to a fall tailgate — it’s a winning combo if you’re looking for insight into how to wear chukka boots. But, back to matters of summer style — what makes these a must-buy?

For starters, it’s tough to find a chukka boot that features eco-friendly, handmade Italian construction out there — let alone with a sub-$150 price tag. And to find one that goes with everything from slim stone chinos to dark denim to slim light wash jeans in the summer can be tricky, too. That easygoing versatility is what sets these Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots apart in so many situations. Rather than resorting to minimal athletic sneakers, jeans and a slim pocket tee, try out these chukka boots and perhaps a tough dive watch — instant style upgrade in the making, and certainly one of the best men’s style moves you can make. And because they’re sold via Huckberry, you can be sure that they’re up to snuff in terms of quality and great looks. It’s also worth noting that the desert boot is a stone-cold classic silhouette — as if you needed another reason to buy these. In addition to real-life functionality for British soldiers, they’ve gained an iconic status — up there with classic white sneakers — that’s tough to top on the footwear front. So, despite summer weather finally catching up to us … there’s no reason not to wear a classic pair of desert boots like the affordable, easy-to-wear and stylish Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots.

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Your Next Sunday Brunch

From dressing for a spring road trip to prepping for today’s style suggestion — gearing up for Sunday brunch — there are plenty of #menswear matters that require your full attention this season. So, listen up! Just kidding. We’ll keep it light and casual today –just as you should when putting together an ensemble for a casual late morning or early afternoon meal. Certainly, not everyone is a brunch fan — but count me in the pro-brunch camp, through and through. We talked last year about how to dress for your next Sunday brunch, but seeing as there are plenty of brunches in your future, it’s high time we updated the look — right? Given that knocking back a Bloody Mary or two comes at a cost — Saturday night festivities — it’s crucial to still look put-together while remaining comfortable and casual. With that being said, we’re mixing stylish Apolis slim chinos and a classic denim shirt with other versatile daily style staples — like an investment-worthy leather watch — that you should already have in your closet. Ultimately, keep it simple and keep it fun. Oh, and put a Bloody Mary on my tab — will ya? For style inspiration on the go you can hang with me on Twitter or Instagram, if you please.

The Shirt: JACHS Light Denim Western Shirt — $75

JACHS

A nice way to switch up your rotation of Oxford shirts.

If you want to switch things up from a classic Oxford, there’s perhaps no better way to do it than a just-different-enough Western shirt. JACHS does excellent work when it comes to quality fabrics (all sourced by the brand), and the faded wash on this rugged denim shirt makes it an A-plus style move. Unique design details like the snap buttons and Western stitching round things out nicely for your next brunch outing.
Flint and Tinder

A neat base layer that provides a dose of comfort and style.

Flint and Tinder calls its Supima Air Knit Long-Sleeve Tee the “cashmere of cotton” that should be lightweight, breathable and nice for layering. While you could also layer a rugged henley under your denim shirt, a knit long-sleeve tee in a color like burgundy adds visual interest and provides another layer in case it gets breezy. And as with all Flint and Tinder gear, you’re getting quality style and great looks for your money.

The Chinos: Apolis Standard Issue Chino in Hunter Khaki — $98

Apolis

A classic pair of chinos fit for a long Sunday brunch.

Way back in 2015, this site sang the praises of Apolis slim chinos, and we’re back for round two today. The brand works its magic using a mix of classic style, sustainability and ethical practices. For starters, the modern cut should be more than agreeable for bunch. Throw in the fact that these chinos are made responsibly in Peru, and the company’s Certified B Corporation status only adds to the brand’s significant style chops. Yessir, buy these and pair them with spring style essentials aplenty.

The Chukkas: Astorflex Greenflex in Dark Chestnut — $129.98

Astorflex

A comfortable, easy-to-wear and well-made suede chukka.

Want to casually and comfortable offset those slim chinos? Pick up some suede chukka boots from yet another brand that makes its gear with sustainability and serious style in mind — that would be Astoflex, folks. The brand’s suede chukkas are ridiculously comfortable and made with top-quality suede that ages well, for one. And the casual open lacing of these chukkas is a nice way to look put-together without having to break out stylish dress shoes (although you could do that, too). So kick back and order another one, maybe?

The Socks: American Trench Pima Cotton Houndstooth Socks — $29.50

Lighter fabric and a distinctive pattern make these socks suitable for spring brunch.

If you thought houndstooth as a pattern only worked in the colder climes of fall and winter, think again. Our pals over at American Trench have taken the distinctive pattern and applied it to a nice range of versatile, spring and summer-friendly socks. They’re pricey, that much is true, but from personal experience … they could just be the most comfortable pair of socks you own.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Watch: Farer Stark Watch — $475

Farer Stark Watch

A watch that blends vintage style details with a dressy design? Perfect for brunch.

Stark is perhaps the wrong name for this Farer watch — because it’s handsome and slightly rugged, yet refined … all at once. Sold via the good folks of Huckberry— as most great gear tends to be — it combines the utility of a chronograph with the distinctive look of a vintage watch your grandpa might have worn. Named after legendary British travel writer and adventurer Dame Freya Stark, it does indeed blend vintage styling details, such as the curved hands, with a dressy 39.5mm diameter. In short, the Farer Stark Watch absolutely belongs in your casual watch collection.

The Belt: La Matera Corbina Belt — $145
La Matera

Add some fabric and color to your belt game with La Matera — it’ll upgrade your accessories game significantly.

Because you should leave no stone unturned in the way of style upgrades, a nicely designed belt with cool detailing is the way to go. It’s not every day that a belt blends both full-grain cognac leather and fabric from Argentina woven on vintage looms, but then again, not every belt is the La Matera Corbina Belt. With that unique fabric and its beautiful design, it’s an easy way to add some subtle flash to this Sunday brunch ensemble.

The Wallet: Andar Wallets The Scout Wallet — $25

An essential upgrade for any guy — especially when it comes time for brunch.,

It might seem counterintuitive to spend a little money on something designed to … hold onto your money. But then again — no one wants a Costanza wallet situation, right? Speaking from personal experience, the slim Andar Scout Wallet goes with me everywhere and slides right into my front pocket, my back pocket, my blazer pocket — you name it. The leather will age nicely and look great, too. After all, you’re picking up the check at brunch — yeah?

NORDSTROM.com

Dressing for Sunday brunch and adventures thereafter doesn’t have to involve anything too complicated — veering ever-so-slightly away from the basics (like swapping a denim shirt for a classic Oxford) is a good place to start. Adding in stylish complements helps even things out, too– enter the Flint and Tinder Supima Air Knit Long-Sleeve Tee.

And offsetting that visually interesting combo is made easy thanks to classic, easygoing Apolis slim chinos and accessories like the vintage-inspired Farer Stark Watch. Don’t forget those finishing touches — the La Matera Corbina Belt is a good one to pick up, to say the least. With all that in your closet, the hardest part now is just picking out somewhere to go — Brunch Village, anyone?

Good luck and don’t eat the Pop-Tarts.

Style Guide Recommends: JBL E55BT Headphones

Just a few of my favorite music essentials. I’d recommend you grab a pair of JBL E55BT Headphones and crank up The Orwells! Bottle opener by Owen and Fred. Sutter Boots by CAT Footwear.

In terms of ongoing Style Guide series, the Style Guide Recommends is one that’s making just its second appearance today — so if you’re along for the ride, welcome! And if you caught entry number one in the series — why it’s worth it to buy a custom suit — you’re perhaps acquainted with what we’re going for here. In short, there’s only so much time in the day for menswear style suggestions or planning your next #OOTD. As much as I love a well-tailored suit or a stylish leather watch, there are other lifestyle matters that are worth your time, too.  For your Style Guide author, music falls quite neatly underneath that lifestyle umbrella — perhaps it’s the same for you. It’s about more than just dressing for a rock concert, though. Be it Governors Ball, Panorama or a weeknight Brooklyn concert by Chicago rockers The Orwells, it’s all fair game. Truly — as my buddy Joe at Dappered notes — music is but one area that can enrich your life with a little listening.
Greats

I’ve certainly found that to be the case, especially living in New York City and getting the chance to see my favorite bands seemingly almost weekly. I’ve also been lucky enough to take my pursuit of beautiful, soulful and just plain fun music to the road as of late — everything from a Pittsburgh trip to see Local Natives to a February excursion to see Young the Giant. Now, what does all this travel and music have to with #menswear? As I always mention, there are certain style upgrades that, once you’ve made, cause you to think differently. And when it comes to your listening experience — be it a quiet podcast or the rollicking rock of Cold War Kids — you should be looking for a style upgrade, too. Which brings me to the ultimate Style Guide recommendation, something that’s going to kick your audio gear up a notch – the JBL E55BT Wireless Headphones,  recently released  and worthy of your time. Yes, that’s right. Headphones, folks.

Mark your calendars for the next concert, folks. Leatherback Writer by This Is Ground. Calendar by The Art of Manliness.

If you’ve ever fumbled around in your pocket for headphones at your desk or as you hustle around the city, you’ll know it can be a struggle and a hassle — a small struggle, but still. The JBL E55BT Wireless Headphones do more than solve tangled cords, though. The listening experience is as crisp, rich and clear as anything you’ll find on the market — particularly for under $150. The Harman headband and variety of color options are welcome design touches, and the over-ear functionality fits comfortably and solidly  — no danger of earbuds falling out here, folks. On one hand, seeing your favorite band can feel like stepping into a Spotify playlist — and listening to the JBL E55BT Wireless Headphones just might be the next best thing, at least for this music fan.

Beckett Simonon

It’s tough to top the nuance and substance of a band like The National — and certainly, the JBL E55BT Headphones provide just as great of a listening experience! Greenflex Chukkas by Astorflex. Shirt by The National

The listening experience is seriously one-of-a-kind — leave it to a new pair of headphones to make an excellent band like The National sound even better. Ultimately, it’s always refreshing to find pleasing additions to your lifestyle — adding a well-made pen or a beautiful notebook to your daily carry can evoke similar small but welcome touches. Such is the case with these headphones — they can turn any marathon blog writing session into a much more enjoyable one, and they make the crowded, hectic NYC commute more bearable. I’d wager they’ll add similar tranquility to your desk or home office — and the nice thing about the  JBL E55BT Wireless Headphones? They’re clean and simple — no chords to speak of, just a comfortable wearing experience, handy Bluetooth connectivity and  great audio quality. I can’t buy you tickets to your next rock show, but I can absolutely guarantee you’ll know all the words to your favorite songs if you buy these headphones. And another thing — your classic spring style ensemble looks even better without earbuds.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you find your listening experience similarly enriched.

Rock on!

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for A Spring Road Trip

Are you packed up for your next spring road trip? Or perhaps, your first of the season? If you’re still struggling with what to bring in your stylish weekender bag, your hard-working Style Guide team of one can help you with that today. Much like dressing for winter travel, gearing up for a day in transit — be it by plane, train or automobile — requires you to meet a few different style scenarios. You could be migrating from temperate, breezy conditions to sweltering heat, as I did on a spring road trip to Florida, or you could be going from a dressy day at the office to a casual vacation.  Either way, packing and traveling with versatility and crisp-yet-casual style in mind can only help you in the long run. So, the focus is on layering, solid fits, mobile fabrics and just a few spring style classics. Think you can handle all that? Hope so — and if you want to see a certain topic covered in this series, leave me a comment in my virtual suggestion box … on Twitter. OK, gear up and hit the road!

The Weekender Bag: Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut — $397

Nisolo Leon Weekender

A beautiful mix of durable leather and excellent style.

As previously covered in our Style Pick of the Week series, there’s really no way you can go wrong with the handsome, supremely stylish and tough Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut. Done up in rich brown leather and lined with tan cotton canvas, the Leon Weekender is a refined blend of style and functionality, and it’ll look just as great in any Instagram travel shots as it will sitting in your trunk or overhead compartment. Think of the Nisolo Leon Weekender as an investment in great taste, great looks and great adventures.

Greats

The Bomber Jacket: La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond — $275

La Paz Ortigao Bomber

A unique shade of … well, almond, done up in a classic cotton bomber jacket.

We all need some stylish spring outerwear in our lives, right? That’s what you’re getting with the versatile, casual and well-made La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond. This 100 percent cotton bomber — featuring raglan sleeves to broaden your frame visually — is made in Portugal, hence the higher price tag. And lest you be wary of the Almond color, think of the lighter cream/off-white shade of the La Paz Bomber as being similar to a foray into white denim — a move that when done right, looks great. I have a sneaky feeling you’ll like the rest of the #menswear ensemble we pair it with, too.
Flint and Tinder

A classic navy polo, made with comfort and care from a solid brand.

The Style Guide editorial team — of one — sure does love Flint and Tinder. From rugged fall and winter outerwear like the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket to seasonal staples like the Flint and Tinder Moleskin Shirt and even the brand’s Garment-Dyed Sweatpants, they make something for every occasion and preference. And now, my fine gentlemen (and ladies!), I offer up the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Made with a tailored fit and in an essential color like navy, it’s a comfortable, breathable layering piece that does just fine sans jacket, too.

The Pants: Iron and Resin Drifter Pant in Graphite — $50

Iron and Resin

The comfort of a drawstring waistband with the tailored look of chinos.

The vibe of this outfit so far screams comfortable, casual and put-together — not sloppy. So while you could feasibly reach for tailored sweatpants here, we’re going with another hybrid option — specifically, classic drawstring trousers from the fine folks at Iron and Resin. Featuring organic cotton with 2 percent stretch and a straight fit, these are perfect pants for travel, what with room to move and versatile looks that can take you from the road to dinner without missing a beat.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Sneakers: Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up — $145

A clean white sneaker from a brand known for its hard-wearing boots.

Who doesn’t love a pair of crisp, classic white sneakers for spring? Your Style Guide author surely does. And while you could certainly swap these white sneakers for something a little more polished — like refined suede Chelsea boots — the simple, clean silhouette of the Allister Lace-up works just as well.  The cushioned footbed should keep your feet comfortable for hours at a time, and there’s hardly a spring style combination more widely accepted than tailored chinos and white sneakers.

The Belt (To Pack): J. Crew Factory Washed Leather Belt — $24.50

No need to get too fancy when it comes to a leather belt to pack for weekend trips.

Packing up your Leon Weekender is going to require some planning. After all, if you’re only going away for a weekend, perhaps you can survive with only a brown leather belt — particularly if you’re wearing drawstring pants on one of those days. But, let’s say you also bring along some slim dark denim. Well, enter this affordable belt for classic style that’s wearable with everything from tough leather boots to the aforementioned white sneakers. It’s as simple as that.
Huckberry

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand — $205

A great-looking watch for a solid price — spring style on the go, without a doubt.

You didn’t think we forgot about including an essential leather watch, did you? Of course not. Just as with packing up only one belt, perhaps you can get through a weekend with just one watch — and if that’s your challenge, I’d humbly submit the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand as your watch of choice, amigo.  The folks at Jack Mason make watches that pull from a variety of influences, from flight to seafaring, and the handsome Aviator 3-Hand combines rugged good looks and crisp, classic style.

The Socks: Richer Poorer Griffin Socks — $8

Richer Poorer

Simple stripes and a nice. comfortable weight for spring.

If you’re going to drop some serious cash on a slim bomber jacket and a durable leather weekender bag, you might as well hang onto your spare change when it comes to buying socks, right? Fear not — Richer Poorer makes high-quality socks in a variety of fabrics despite the low price. Those options include the “Everyday Midweight” option seen here. Even better? They won’t look half-bad in terms of color and design when you take off your spring sneakers, either.

The Underrated Accessories: Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit — $49.98 AND Decibullz Custom-Fit Bluetooth Wireless Earphones — $119.99

A durable dopp kit and high-quality headphones — both great pieces to have handy on the road.

If you’ve been hunting for a stylish men’s dopp kit for a while now, end that search ASAP, because the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit is here to save the day. Heavy-duty olive drab canvas sets this kit apart, as do small touches like leather zipper pulls. In short, it’s a much better way to carry your grooming essentials than a plastic bag. And who doesn’t need premium headphones, right? The kicker with Decibullz? These headphones can be molded to the shape of your ear, just like a mouthguard. If you need some music to listen to on your trip, might I recommend Lucius or Local Natives? Onward.

There are a lot of details to consider when packing up for a spring road trip. Starting with a durable, functional weekender bag like the Leon Weekender is as good a jumping-off point as any, however. And for travel that could start out chilly and end up warm, layering essentials like the La Paz Bomber should prove premium, well-made and versatile. The same can be said for a classic spring polo — enter the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Lest we leave behind any stylish travel accessories, don’t forget to pack a durable casual watch — certainly, the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand is the way to go. Clean white sneakers and grey Iron and Resin chinos also make for easygoing, high-low style, which is just what you want when on the road. And certainly, everyday carry pieces like the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit are going to make your life a whole lot easier — and more stylish — when traveling. If you’ve got pieces you’d like to see added, or if you think this suggestion is just fine and dandy, leave a note on The Style Guide Facebook page.

See you on the road — stay stylish!

#OOTD: The Right Way to Wear A Patterned Shirt This Spring

If you’re anything like me, perhaps you’re anxious to shelve your neutral style essentials and inject more interesting, eye-catching color and pattern into your spring #OOTD — all in the name of warmer weather, of course. Well, you’re in luck today, because it’s time we got around to covering how to wear a patterned shirt this spring. Yes, there are some things you should do, and some things you definitely shouldn’t do. Although patterned shirts might call to mind lurid florals and baggy fits — perhaps most commonly found around the community pool — we’re dialing in the fit and the color palette considerably in the below #OOTD. We’re also teaming this stylish short-sleeve shirt with essentials you can wear all spring and summer — pieces like durable suede chukkas and an essential casual watch, for starters. But, we’ll figure out all the specifics below; for now, check out my upcoming #menswear picks and follow along for the topsy-turvy ride on Instagram and Twitter.

Swapping out gaudy florals for a cool patchwork pattern and other seasonal staples.

The Shirt: Life/After/Denim Patchwork Short-Sleeve Shirt, $110 — The piece de resistance of the entire outfit — a neat, very unique indigo patchwork shirt with a retro-style camp collar. Perfect for a or to wear when dressing for a summer festival or heading on a spring bar crawl.

The Jacket: Levi’s Trucker Jacket in Rinse, $89.50 — There might not be a better piece of spring outerwear than a trusty denim jacket from a reputable source like Levi’s — wear this thing as much as you can, and it’ll break in handsomely.

The Pants: Devereux Ford Five-Pocket Pants, $138 — If you find white denim a bit intimidating,  why not reach for an off-white pair of 5-pocket pants? These mimic the tailoring of a chino with a cotton-spandex blend that’s more familiar.

Beckett Simonon

The Chukka Boots: Astorflex Greenflex in Dark Khaki, $145 — With their classic silhouette and handsome shade of dark khaki suede, it’s easy to mistake the Astorflex Greenflex in Dark Khaki for something a menswear icon like Steve McQueen might’ve worn — and that’s a very good part about this #OOTD.

The Socks: Teva Benny Gold Socks (Limited Edition), $12 — In an outfit packed with various shades of dark blue, it’s nice to inject a bit of lighter blue. Enter the limited edition, exceedingly comfortable Teva Benny Gold Socks.Sutro Shoes Inc.

When you pair it with easygoing spring staples like off-white pants and the Astorflex Greenflex in Dark Khaki, it’s wearable for casual situations and perhaps even a laidback office Friday.  You can — and should — use your accessories to reinforce the laidback nature of this patterned shirt; that’s where an Arcade Belt Co. belt can come into play. Don’t leave behind your everyday carry — I’m a big fan of the Timex + Todd Snyder Military Watch for its durability and versatility. Plus, the Mod Laptop Carrier is going to be a very effective way to travel efficiently and stylishly. So, there you have it. #OOTD: How to Wear Your New Favorite Leather Jacket This Spring

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves — welcome back to another entry in our weekly #OOTD series. Before we dive in — perhaps you might be set on spring outerwear so far? If so, good for you — there’s no question we all need pieces like a tough waxed trucker jacket to wear  this spring.  However, there are absolutely other layering tools you should consider this season.  Lucky for you, we’ve covered a lot of ground on layering in recent weeks, including the best way to wear a cardigan. Well now, we’re taking things a bit of a different direction — a slightly edgier direction, notably. Specifically, we’re dialing in the best way to wear a stylish leather jacket this spring. OK, OK … there are  admittedly several great ways to wear an investment-level leather jacket for spring. But your Style Guide author sure digs the below combination — and it’s quite easy to love, what with the fact that it features the inimitable, one-of-a-kind Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket.  How cool is this jacket? Well … the Moto Jacket could very well be the last leather jacket you ever buy. Enough with the theatrics, though — let’s get to the #OOTD. The Watch: Marathon General Purpose Quartz Watch, $150 — When you’ve got leather jacket like the Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket, it’s best to let it do the talking. In this case, we’re sticking with a tough casual watch — enter the Marathon General Purpose Quartz Watch.

And that’s a wrap for this week’s #OOTD — have any new ideas on how to wear your new favorite leather jacket? I sure hope so. I know I’ll be coveting the Taylor Stitch Moto Jacket for a long, long time — maybe you’re in the same boat? Style Suggestion: How to Dress for March Madness The Right Way

If you’re a fan of college basketball — and even if you’re not — you presumably know that March Madness is coming up this weekend.  It brings a lot of hype with it — and despite that, I say we should be focused on dressing for March Madness the right way. As for me, I’ll be fervently cheering on my beloved Michigan State Spartans (GO GREEN!). If you’re heading to a  watch party or to your favorite local pub to take in the action, you  know what I’m about to say — don’t let those style upgrades go to waste. We’ve talked about how to dress for football season, but dressing for March Madness is a bit of a different animal. There’s spring layering involved, there’s office style to consider — during games later this week, at least — and you still need to show proper spirit. If that lines up with your game plan, you’ll enjoy today’s post. Follow along on Instagram and via The Style Guide Facebook page to see how I’ll be cheering on MSU — as always, best of luck and stay stylish!

The Sweater: Hillflint Cotton Tailgating Sweater — $89

A much more stylish alternative to your average sports jersey.

A much more stylish alternative to your average sports jersey.

Who said dressing for sporting events meant throwing on an athletic jersey? No sir, the folks at Hillflint have been doing things differently for quite some time, drawing on vintage and old-school collegiate styles to craft team gear that’s a darn sight better-looking than a baggy sports jersey (sorry, guys — it’s my job). The 100 percent cotton fabrication means this is pretty breathable and easy to layer under a tough waxed trucker jacket should the weather turn south — and whoever you root for, you’re supporting your squad the whole way through thanks to the brand’s plethora of team options.

The Henley: Reigning Champ Long-Sleeve Henley — $85

A sport-inspired layering piece that looks great on its own and works the whole rest of the year.

A sport-inspired layering piece that looks great on its own and works the whole rest of the year.

You could certainly layer a classic chambray shirt underneath the aforementioned team sweater, but a henley from the good folks at Reigning Champ makes just as much sense. In a casual style situation, it’s more comfortable and works better on its own if you get too hot (or … if you don’t feel like repping a losing squad? Ouch).  Besides that, a simple, functional and durable piece like the Reigning Champ Long-Sleeve Henley works throughout the rest of the spring and into fall and winter. Get on it now.

The Denim: Nudie Jeans Lean Dean — $200
Crisp enough for the office, dressy enough for the bar and perfect everywhere else.

Crisp enough for the office, dressy enough for the bar and perfect everywhere else.

There’s no better time than the spring for a casual pair of slim light wash denim. Made with premium Italian cotton and featuring a unique “Indigo Spirit” wash, the Lean Dean is just dressy enough to work at the office thanks to the tailored fit. Make no mistake though, they’ll also work nicely at the bar or hanging with friends to watch the tourney’s opening rounds.

A better alternative to athletic sneakers? Surely. Made responsibly? Definitely.

Leave it to Astorflex to craft a seriously sustainable, stylish and spring-friendly boot via its Bootflex line.  As it turns out, the Bootflex line is now sold out, so we’re also recommending you grab the slick, sharp Astorflex Bitflex Chelsea Boot in Dark Khaki. Sold via the ever-stylish team at Huckberry, you’re getting a surprisingly sturdy suede boot finished off with a natural rubber sole either way. The Dark Khaki color is just the right shade to transition into spring, and the casual nature of these boots means they’ll stylishly offset the more casual athletic sweater and light denim.

A durable-as-heck pair of socks that work in multiple seasons and don’t detract from your team garb.

Lest you think socks are just socks and you should pay them no mind … meet the Ultimate American Sock
from United By Blue. Crucially, these socks are as easy to wear with the lightweight Bootflex in Dark Khaki as they are with a tough pair of winter boots or a spring weekend ensemble. Plus, the color of these socks is unassuming and doesn’t distract from your sweater — and that’s what we want anyways, right?

A straightforward casual belt with nice spring texture and an agreeable price -- winning style for the tourney.

A straightforward casual belt with nice spring texture and an agreeable price — winning style for the tourney.

In the grand scheme of things, a belt might not seem like the biggest deal. But when you’re gearing up in casual fashion, the little style details still matter. So, a textured leather belt is a simple, easy pick to make alongside the Bootflex in Dark Khaki  and the casual wash and slim fit of the Lean Dean. Plus, it works with plenty of other laidback #menswear ‘fits.
A tough watch with classic diver specs and the versatility to work for a casual night watching a slate of games.

A relatively recent addition to the Huckberry line of stellar goods, the Deep Blue Master 1000 Automatic Diver is both handsome and functional. For starters, it features 330 meters of water resistance and a stainless steel case. What does that mean for you, college basketball fan? It means the Master 1000 Automatic Diver  can stand up to spilled drinks in the pandemonium of celebrating a win, and it means it’ll look great alongside other casual menswear picks this season.

The Essential: GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg — $159

The best way to serve beer at your March Madness party? Maybe, just maybe.

The best way to serve beer at your March Madness party? Maybe, just maybe.

If you’re throwing a March Madness party — or if you’re attending one — enjoying a key beverage of choice is always of the utmost concern. Yet another essential piece of gear sold by Huckberry, the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg  is certainly a sturdy vessel for your favorite brew, with enough bells and whistles included to keep your favorite craft beer perfectly carbonated all game long. And who can resist the vintage look of the copper plating? Again, we’re going beyond just athletics here today.
With all that being said … I assume we’ve got our brackets filled out — right? Ideally, the above March Madness style suggestion should take care of a few more pressing items for you. Starting things off on the right foot with an upgraded athletic sweater is going to set you apart in a good way no matter where you go, and complementing that sweater with another athletic-inspired piece (like the Reigning Champ Long-Sleeve Henley) is just a move that works here. Casual, versatile pieces like the Lean Dean work for both the office and a game-watching party, as does the handsome lace-up silhouette of the Bootflex in Dark Khaki.  And given that everyone loves a tough, durable and casual watch, you could do worse than the Master 1000 Automatic Diver. While we’re talking essentials, please save some Hill Farmstead from the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg for me, will ya?
Unless you went to The U, I wish you luck this weekend — stay stylish and GO GREEN!

#OOTD: Everyday Spring Style

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

Thanks for joining us again today on The Style Guide — let’s get to it! Alright, who’s excited that it’s March? I sure am. Namely, that means we’re transitioning into a great season for menswear, and that also gives you plenty of chances to break out everyday spring style looks. We’re talking versatile, comfortable pieces built for layering — yet these are also pieces that work on their own, and can be added or subtracted depending on the weather.  Whether that means dressing for spring rain  or heading out on a weekend coffee date, we’ve got pieces you’ll recognize, want to buy and want to wear.  That includes classic pieces (cough, the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt, cough) and slightly edgier staples. OK, all good? Keep up with other #menswear inspiration on the daily via Instagram or Twitter — and weigh in on this look via the comments, as always.

Working in the versatile, the classic and the new into one outfit.

Working in the versatile, the classic and the new into one outfit.

The Sweatshirt: Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt, $98 — Recognize this sweater? Of course you do — right? Todd Snyder is an American menswear luminary precisely for pieces like the lauded Pocket Sweatshirt, and it’s a nice, easy-to-wear spring layering option.

The Shirt: Abercrombie & Fitch Two-Pocket Chambray Shirt, $39 — There’s really never a bad time to wear a classic chambray shirt, is there?  This one is laidback, casual and versatile.

The Pants: Life/After/Denim Classic 5-Pocket Pant in White, $148 — White pants — even in a straightforward five-pocket silhouette — can be a bit of a leap stylistically. Don’t worry here, though — the tailored fit and use of other classic staples (like the Pocket Sweatshirt) helps dial these in.

The Boots: Astorflex Bootflex in Dark Khaki, $169.98 — A recent release from Astorflex by way of Huckberry, these lace-up boots are high-quality and no-frills — exactly what you need for stomping through inclement spring weather (just be sure to waterproof ’em).

The Belt: Abercrombie & Fitch Woven Leather Belt, $44 — We’re dialing in casual style right down to the last detail with this #OOTD — a woven leather belt provides some nice texture & casual style to complement the Astorflex Bootflex in particular.

The Watch: Timex + Todd Snyder Military Watch, $138 — What better way to complement the Pocket Sweatshirt than with another stylish, sharp and durable Todd Snyder piece? The Military Watch could be your new favorite casual watch — trust me.

Frank & Oak

The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, $39.98 — Told you we were keeping things laidback, didn’t I? Now, you can’t wear a ballcap every day, but if you’re checking out of the office early on a Friday (for example) … toss on the Explorer’s Cap as you head to a patio lunch.

The Bag: Nisolo Lori Tote, $134.98 — When you want a durable yet easy-to-carry bag, reach for the handsome Nisolo Lori Tote. It’s handmade with minimal construction and beautiful leather that should develop a nice patina.
So, with that — let’s wrap up this #OOTD, shall we? Comfortable layering pieces like the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt are easy to wear no matter the season, and a slim chambray shirt perfectly complements the more fashion-forward white 5-pocket pants. Given the company’s reputation for quality, sustainability and durability, the Astorflex Bootflex in Dark Khaki should also be an extremely reliable spring footwear pick, finished off handsomely by the excellent Timex + Todd Snyder Military Watch. Of course, keeping your accessories in line is crucial, and the textured Abercrombie & Fitch Woven Leather Belt is a nice way to do that — as is the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap. Got that all together? Shopping cart full? Join us tomorrow for a helpful Spring Style Wish List — and we’ll see you out there this spring!

#OOTD: Layering Up in Style This Winter

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

OK, so first of all — it’s Valentine’s Day! I hope you’re spending the day just as you’d like, and in style. To that end —  if you’re looking to shore up or switch up your casual winter style  after a few months of bone-chilling cold, this week’s #OOTD will sort that out nicely for you. We talked last month about how to wear a turtleneck this winter, but we’re going a bit more accessible and a bit more versatile today — as you’ll see below. It’s taking pieces that you might already have in your wardrobe, or pieces that you might be coveting — ahem, the Taylor Stitch Maritime Submariner Jacket — and putting in all together in a look that you can wear any day of the week. So, Sunday brunch? Check. Heck, Saturday brunch? You got it. And a weekend coffee date or a business casual day at the office? Absolutely. For more daily style inspiration, follow your Style Guide author on Instagram. Join us later this week for our regularly scheduled #menswear programming, too. Happy shopping!

Taylor Stitch

Taking classic pieces and upgrading the fabrics and fits.

The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Maritime Submariner Jacket, $248 — Ahh, yes. The warm, comfortable, slim-fitting and versatile Taylor Stitch Maritime Submariner Jacket. How could you not love it? Right? Right.

The Sweater: Bonobos Merino V-Neck Sweater, $58 — If you’re going to wear something more simple in form — like a V-neck sweater — you might as well make yours a high-quality, well-fitting piece in a rich winter color. Wondering how it should fit?  Read my recent Effortless Gent piece on how to find the perfect sweater (nudge, nudge).

The Oxford: JackThreads The Oxford Shirt, $39 — Is there a more classic combination for versatile, casual style than a V-neck sweater and an Oxford? Not quite — especially when it’s a great deal from the folks at JackThreads.

The Denim: Buck Mason Lou Slim Fit Jean, $175 — If you haven’t checked out Buck Mason, I’d advise you do so — from the brand’s classic short-sleeve chambray shirts to slim denim like this pair (faded just right), it’s tough gear for the modern man.

The Boots: Astorflex Bitflex Chelsea Boots, $180 — As sold by everyone’s favorite E-commerce retailer — that’s Huckberry, y’all — Astorflex makes essential, sustainable and stylish footwear. Yes, the Bitflex Chelsea Boots are a winning footwear choice.

The Belt: Abercrombie & Fitch Leather Belt, $44 — Sometimes, your accessories help define a casual ensemble. In this instance, a textured belt tones things down in comparison to a slim dress belt.

The Socks:  American Trench Pima Cotton Houndstooth Socks, $16.98 — If you’re going to fill your sock drawer with only the best, might as well make your picks from American Trench — the brand makes beautiful, comfortable socks.

The Watch:  Tanner Goods Martenero Ace Automatic Watch, $549.98 — Just as a textured leather belt places this outfit in casual territory, so too does a rugged, handsome and eye-catching watch with tough Tanner Gods leather.  Truly, the Ace Automatic Watch is expertly designed and made to stand up to anything.

With versatility and great comfort & fit in mind, dressing in casual style can be easy and hey, fun. And if you’ve been looking for ways to switch up your style this winter, a great V-neck and Oxford is one way to go. These are pieces you might already have, but you can amp things up with something like the handsome, rugged Maritime Submariner Jacket and slick footwear like the Astorflex Bitflex Chelsea Boots. Oh, and if adding to your watch collection is a priority in terms of your 2017 style resolutions, there’s no better place to start than the very investment-worthy Ace Automatic Watch. If you have any questions or suggestions on this outfit, drop ’em in the comments or hit me up on Twitter. Talk to you soon, and thank you for reading!

As hard as it can be to shelve your favorite summer sneakers, there’s something to be said for the durability and style of a great Chelsea boot in the chillier months. From a rock concert to the office and beyond, the stylish Chelsea boot is a super-sharp, upscale answer to a pair of rugged leather lace-up boots — and the good news is, there’s no wrong time to wear them. Particularly in the fall months, something like the Astorflex Chelsea Boot will have you set up for plenty of style situations ahead — particularly in a rich, versatile and yet neutral color like the Dark Khaki option pictured here. And well, that’s why it’s this week’s Style Pick of the Week. The Astorflex brand, sold by the Style Guide favorites at Huckberry, is a company that continually looks to update its offerings — they just introduced some low-cut sneakers, and the Astorflex Chelsea Boot  is just the latest in its rugged-refined set of products. Crucially, they’re handmade in northern Italy with premium European leather. And if you value exacting craftsmanship in your Chelsea boots — in addition to great style — these are the boots to get. The leather itself is aged for 30 days in a mixture of oak bark, water and powdered mimosa — how’s that for attention to detail? And the resulting finishing process is top-notch, as well. They’re made with 100 percent natural rubber soles and memory foam footbeds — talk about the perfect blend of form and function.

Huckberry

Along with those top-of-the-line materials and environmentally friendly construction process, they’ve got top-of-the-line styling potential. The silhouette is such that they’re able to be worn to a rock concert (seriously!) alongside dark blue or black denim, topped off with a durable henley. And the rest of the week, you can team them with wool trousers and a V-neck sweater (maybe atop an essential chambray shirt?) for days at the office. The rubber sole on the Astorflex Chelsea Boot  should be sturdy and durable, while the premium suede should hang in there through the fall months with a little care. When the spring hits, they’d also be a unique complement to light wash denim and your favorite pocket T-shirt. With the Astorflex Chelsea Boot , the design and materials are so on-point that there’s no wrong way to wear them. Not sold on a Chelsea boot yet? Give these a try for an agreeable price ($180 ain’t too bad), and rock them as much as you can.
