Style: Howler Brothers H Bar B Snapshirt — $69 OR Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie in Navy — $89

A stylish short-sleeve shirt or a casual-yet-premium zip-up hoodie — your call, amigo.

Don’t get Dad any old shirt for summer. And certainly, don’t just buy him any old zip-up hoodie. For a unique upgrade to Dad’s weekend BBQ style, the Howler Brothers H Bar B Snapshirt features a unique print, vintage-inspired design details (which he’ll appreciate!) and the kind of easygoing style that’s perfect for a summer vacation. And for a more casually minded Dad? Who doesn’t love a premium zip-up hoodie? Yes indeed, the Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie in Navy is the best zip-up hoodie on the market, perfect for casual weekend hangs.

Spirits: Be Home Copper Bar Set — $39.98 AND W&P Design Homemade Gin Kit — $47.98

Two picks for the dad who enjoys the art and nuance of a delicious cocktail.

Is Dad a big-time spirits enthusiast, the kind of guy who appreciates the art of a finely crafted cocktail? Bring a little of that same spirit home to him — after all, both of these gifts feature the functionality and smart, handsome design to fit right into a home study, den or kitchen. The Be Home Copper Bar Set is the all-in-one answer to mixing a delicious drink, and the W&P Design Homemade Gin Kit is the all-in-one answer to a key ingredient in said cocktail. Dad’s gonna love it.
Father's Day Gifts

Two options for two different kinds of dad — or maybe two gifts for the versatile dad?

If Dad’s a golf enthusiast, here’s the perfect gift to complement that new golf polo or putter (someone’s feeling generous this year). Make no mistake, the Nomo Design Augusta Print is entirely unique and eye-catching — perfect for Dad’s study. And if he’s more of a geography buff — or simply appreciates neat home décor? The Erstwhile World Political Wall Map is a super-premium (and yes, pricey) finishing touch.
Accessories, Part 1: Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses — $225

Sunglasses that seamlessly blend the retro and the modern.

File the Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses  firmly under your list of gifts for the “cool dad” — or the dad who just needs new shades. Electric makes its sunglasses with top-quality touches like Italian acetate and striking colors, plus the type of wearable style that fits in whether your dad is manning the grill or taking his favorite car for a spin on Sunday. He’ll be the best-dressed guy on the road — particularly if you also gift him the Howler Brothers H Bar B Snapshirt … right? Right?
Oxfords under $50 CAD_120x90
Accessories, Part 2: Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph — $159.98
Watches for Father's Day

A sharp watch that works for dressy or casual situations — something a watch buff can definitely appreciate it.

A stylish dress watch and sharp sunglasses go hand-in-hand, do they not? The Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph is a crisply designed watch that’s at once speedy, slick and … surprisingly office-friendly. Seriously — if you’ve got one of your own, you know what I mean. And if the dad on your list is an avid watch fan and wants a new — and distinctly wearable — timepiece to add to his collection, you’d do well to give him the  Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph.

A significantly upgraded shaving experience for Dad at a great price.

Is your dad on or off the beard bandwagon? At any rate, Harry’s does excellent work when it comes to quick, easy-to-use and easy-to-buy grooming gear for dads (and normal guys everywhere). You can (and should) engrave the razor stand for a customized touch, and the special storm gray handle is a clean, crisply designed edition made specifically for Father’s Day.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

Home Furnishings: Angelpoise Original 1227 Brass Desk Lamp — $342.98

A smartly designed, functional and stylish lamp for the clean-cut dad.

If great style is all about small upgrades — and if giving gifts is about getting someone something they’d never buy themselves — then look toward an underrated home décor opportunity for Father’s Day. Featuring classic design, handsome looks and the type of refinement befitting a stylish dad’s home study or office, the Angelpoise Original 1227 Brass Desk Lamp is at once smart and simple, necessary and very underrated. Oh, and yes … it’s expensive. But worth it for dad — right? (Maybe get the family to pitch in on this one, though).

Music: Barking Irons Rock n’ Roll is Dad T-Shirt — $49.00 AND “Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City, 2001-2011 — $16.98 via Amazon

Two gifts for the dad who simply loves to rock.

Consider this music-themed gift set a one-two punch: Give one or the other, but for maximum impact — gift both. Barking Irons is a brand entirely inspired by downtown New York Cool, with its gritty tees crafted to be worn to a rock concert (or to the office under a navy blazer). And if Dad loves great rock music (heck, who doesn’t??), I’m positive he’ll be enamored by the recently released tome you see above, chronicling the history of NYC’s rock scene — again, the epitome of downtown New York cool — in the early 2000s. You up for it?

Alright, that’ll do it for this year’s Father’s Day gift guide. I hope the above list got your gears spinning — from the dad who loves style to the dad who loves iconic rock music, there aren’t that many ways to go wrong with the above gifts. You get comfortable, casual style via the Flint and Tinder 10-Year Hoodie in Navy, and you  get a few fancy spirit options via either the Be Home Copper Bar Set or the W&P Design Homemade Gin Kit. And lest we forget about handy everyday accessories, any dad could use upgraded sunglasses or a slick timepiece — the Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph could be the new watch to buy now. Don’t overlook the little things, either — essential grooming gear from Harry’s never goes amiss, and a thoughtful (and again, pricey!) home piece like the Angelpoise Original 1227 Brass Desk Lamp is a surefire winner. So … what are you getting Dad this year? Let me know in the comments, and good luck shopping!

Style Pick of the Week: Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots

Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots

Classic, stylish and easy-to-wear chukka boots via Astorflex, shown at the top right with travel essentials from Owen and Fred, Abercrombie & Fitch, Huckberry, Nautica, Herschel Supply Co. and Electric Sunglasses.

Is it just me, or is it time for a seasonal footwear upgrade with a pair of the best boots for men? Think: Something that’s not a sneaker, but not a burly leather work boot that’s uncomfortable to wear — something that’ll work for nearly every style situation, from a casual weekend barbecue to a stylish road trip. Who’s with me? Perhaps the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots come to mind — no? I recently took my own pair on a spring road trip to Indiana, and can definitely vouch for them.  They’re an updated take on the classic desert boot, crafted with a crepe sole, high-quality suede and the type of easygoing silhouette that pairs just as well with your favorite chinos as it does with slim light wash denim on breezy summer days. In fact, I’d hope you recognize the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots as seen above from a few posts on The Style Guide.

Namely, the rich Dark Khaki colorway seen here will work as you dress for Sunday brunch or look for ways to upgrade your casual shirt — don’t think you should shelve all of your chukka boots entirely just because the thermostat starts to climb. And know that these Astorflex chukka boots also come in the equally versatile Stone and Grey colorways. Indeed, with a blend of comfort, style and accessibility, the Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots — just like the brand’s Astorflex Chelsea Boots —  are a seasonal must-have in any color. Trust me: That goes for spring, summer and fall. Seriously, keep them on hand to wear with a rugged chambray shirt and dark selvedge denim to a fall tailgate — it’s a winning combo if you’re looking for insight into how to wear chukka boots. But, back to matters of summer style — what makes these a must-buy?

For starters, it’s tough to find a chukka boot that features eco-friendly, handmade Italian construction out there — let alone with a sub-$150 price tag. And to find one that goes with everything from slim stone chinos to dark denim to slim light wash jeans in the summer can be tricky, too. That easygoing versatility is what sets these Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots apart in so many situations. Rather than resorting to minimal athletic sneakers, jeans and a slim pocket tee, try out these chukka boots and perhaps a tough dive watch — instant style upgrade in the making, and certainly one of the best men’s style moves you can make. And because they’re sold via Huckberry, you can be sure that they’re up to snuff in terms of quality and great looks. It’s also worth noting that the desert boot is a stone-cold classic silhouette — as if you needed another reason to buy these. In addition to real-life functionality for British soldiers, they’ve gained an iconic status — up there with classic white sneakers — that’s tough to top on the footwear front. So, despite summer weather finally catching up to us … there’s no reason not to wear a classic pair of desert boots like the affordable, easy-to-wear and stylish Astorflex Greenflex Chukka Boots.

How would you style these boots? To pick up inspiration from yours truly, check out my Instagram. And send me a note on Twitter if ever you have #menswear questions.

The Friday Read: The Best Men’s Backpacks, Governors Ball and Stylish Summer Sunglasses

Governors Ball

There’s no question I’m listening away on my JBL headphones today — and getting VERY pumped to see bands like The Orwells this weekend at Governors Ball 2017!

We’re comin’ at ya live from New York for today’s edition of The Friday Read here at The Style Guide — and if it’s June 2nd, that must mean one thing: It’s time for Governors Ball 2o17 here in the Big Apple! The three-day music festival is always a favorite of mine, and it’s the third year in a row I’m attending at least one day — including last year’s trip to Governors Ball . It brings in the best across indie rock, rap, electronic music — you name it, it’s got a home in NYC. It’s also bringing back acts that I’ve seen on the road near and far, from Local Natives to The Head and the Heart and Chicago rockers The Orwells.

I’m looking forward to new tunes from the likes of Phoenix, Lorde, Warpaint and plenty more, plus a fine helping of gourmet eats and tasty craft brews. It’ll be an excellent way to cap off a busy week — and it follows on the heels of a stylish Memorial Day weekend I spent with family and friends in Fort Myers. So, we’re truly experiencing some fun in the sun to kick off summer.  If you’d  like to keep up with all the men’s style and music action, follow me on Instagram and look for a full music festival style recap on Monday here on the blog. Until then — we’ll be talking about the best men’s backpacks and stylish summer sunglasses  via the below featured articles. With that being said: Turn it up, grab your beverage of choice and join me on another journey filled with excellent tunes and even better times.

  • Speaking of summer excursions and summer adventures: If it’s a new backpack you need, I’d say I’ve got you set — I covered the 35 best men’s backpacks for GearMoose! Read up and shop away.

Style Guide Recommends: Why You Should Be Reading Style Girlfriend

Hanging with Megan of Style Girlfriend — and wearing some classic essentials, including Apolis chinos, a Life/After/Denim patchwork shirt and Allen Edmonds Liverpool Chelsea Boots.

Every day, I try to carve out some time to do a bit of reading — both related to #menswear and otherwise. There are certain sites that I always check out, with good reason — these sites bridge the gap between style and lifestyle. And without a doubt, Style Girlfriend does both quite well — making it a favorite daily read of mine (as well as an inspiration to start this blog, way back in college). The site features men’s style advice from women and covers plenty of other helpful categories, too. The team consistently delivers great work, day in and day out, to the benefit of all us who appreciate sharp style and a life lived well. Today, we’ll tell you why you should be reading Style Girlfriend — it’s all in a day’s work!

Not familiar with Style Girlfriend? You can catch up in part with our 2015 Q+A with Megan, which covered everything from men’s fashion to starting a business and helping guys lead better lives. The Style Girlfriend philosophy is an approach I’ve long admired for its attention to detail and its mission. Really, Style Girlfriend is all about helping men “be their best selves.” Whether you’re looking for  input on how to dress for the office or how to impress women , the SG team has you set.

All throughout the site, the Style Girlfriend team recognizes that there are so many different facets of men’s style that can — and should — be of interest in leading a better life. Whether it’s useful advice on advice on how to match clothing or their engaging, easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement “Five Days, Five Ways” series, there’s really no limit to how much time you could spend researching. The SG team really does have your back in matters beyond style — for instance, the site’s “What a Woman Wants” section covers, well, what women really want. That goes for little things like revealing date questions and helpful everyday advice. Pair those features with handy grooming tips, and you’ve got plenty of helpful, smart and well-done life advice in front of you.

Once again, I really do hope you take the time to check out the Style Girlfriend site. The work being done by the team, from style coverage to relationship advice and how to approach life’s challenges, really is invaluable. What are you waiting for?

As always — thanks for reading and stay stylish!

#OOTD: How to Dress for a Music Festival This Summer

Can you feel it in the air? Yes? No? Maybe you can … hear it? That’s right, summer festival season is upon us, truly now.  And of course, with that comes a crucial question: How to dress for a music festival this summer?  If you already made the pilgrimage to the two-weekend extravaganza that is Coachella, you surely got a taste of what’s to come: Hot weather and crowds filled with far-too-trendy teens. I kid, I kid — we all know there’s excellent music and cold beer to be had, too. Whether you’re gearing up to attend NYC’s Governors Ball this weekend — as I will be — or a festival a bit later in the summer (like Panorama or Bonnaroo), we’ll set you up with simple-yet-stylish gear to take you festival-hopping from stage to stage, all day long. It’s about style that’s ready for anything, namely. Whether there’s rain and a slight breeze or a brutal sun high in the sky, I think the below #OOTD is versatile and comfortable — not to mention ready for a rock concert during the rest of the year. What will you be wearing to your next music festival? I hope it includes some of the below pieces. And if you still have questions, get style inspiration via my Instagram. Oh, and join me on Twitter for daily #menswear tips.

Mixing a classic chambray shirt with slim jeans and comfortable slip-ons — ready for plenty of festivals in the months ahead.

The Shirt: Old Navy Slim-Fit Chambray Shirt in Dark Chambray, $26.94 — While others might be reaching for neon tank-tops or … dare I say … male rompers (yikes), outdo ’em all with a classic — a slim short-sleeve chambray shirt. It’s not a stretch to say every guy looks good in one, and I think you’ll like the results if you buy this one.
Sutro Footwear
The Extra Layer: Outerknown Evolution Shirt Jacket, $195 — There’s a good chance you might not need this shirt-jacket at all, but should it start to rain or get chilly, you’ve got a handy, stylish and easily packable layer in the Outerknown Evolution Shirt Jacket. It’s not the most colorful jacket, but it’ll get the job done.

The Denim: Abercrombie & Fitch Super Skinny Jeans in Light Wash, $39  — Slim jeans in a pleasing light wash are as much of a concert essential as they are a summer essential — these feature stretch for comfort and an excellent price (comfort for your wallet, if you will).

The Shoes: SWIMS Breeze Leap Laser Loafer, $150 Look, I love a pair of rugged leather boots for a concert as much as the next guy — but if conditions get overly hot, you want shoes that are easy to wear, easy to clean and still stylish. The Breeze Leap Laser Loafer is your answer there (I wore a pair of SWIMS to the 2016 Governors Ball festival—  with great results, too!).
Greats

The Socks: Arvin Goods No-Show Socks (Three-pack), $22.98 — Although you might be wearing laidback slip-on sneakers, don’t forgo no-show socks — they help any pair of stylish spring footwear last longer, for one. And with Arvin Goods, you get a handy three-pack for the whole weekend.

The Watch: Timex Waterbury Diver Chronograph, $130  — An affordable, tough and stylish men’s dive watch for under $150? Can’t be true, can it? That’s what you get with the Timex Waterbury Diver Chronograph, a recent addition to the brand’s line — perhaps the best-looking watch at any festival you attend.

The Sunglasses: Electric Bengal Sunglasses, $100 — When packing for a festival, it’s all too easy to throw a cheap pair of fluorescent sunglasses in your bag. Don’t — especially not when you can snag the stylish, retro-inspired and affordable (yet well-made!) Bengal Sunglasses seen here.

The Pre-Festival Must-Have: JBL E55BT Wireless On-Ear Headphones, $149.95 — What better way to prep for a festival than listening to your favorite artists? After testing out the JBL E55BT Headphones this spring, I can confidently recommend their stellar sound and sleek looks.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90The Everyday Carry: Nisolo Lori Tote, $144.98 — Whether you bring a portable charger, a bottle of sunscreen (I like Tread for Men grooming) or a jacket, you need a bag to carry all that gear — the handsome Nisolo Lori Tote is that bag.

Make no mistake, folks — dressing for a music festival isn’t necessarily easy business …. unless you grab tried-and-true style essentials, ranging from a slim short-sleeve chambray shirt to essential light wash denim.  Couple that with easy-to-wear, weather-ready slip-ons, the versatile Outerknown Evolution Shirt Jacket and tough accessories — like a rugged dive watch — and you’re set for a long day of stellar music. And to carry around your gear, I can’t think of a more stylish bag than the Nisolo Lori Tote. The little details matter, too — that’s why I’d also urge you to pick up a pair of no-show socks from Arvin Goods. Oh, and don’t forget that handy sheet of set times — I’d wager you’ll be so focused on the music that this essential, versatile outfit will become an afterthought as you rock out. That’s what we want, right? At any rate, I hope you enjoy your summer festival season in style.

Thanks for reading!

Hitting the Beach: A Memorial Day Weekend in Florida

Equal parts preppy, classic and laidback. Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt by Criquet Shirts. Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts by Volcom. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Dive Watch by CHAPS. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

As the week dawned rainy and a bit chilly in NYC,  my mind turned immediately toward sunny Florida –I knew I needed a vacation. And that’s just what I got, as I spent these past few days celebrating Memorial Day weekend in style. I always relish the chance to hop a quick flight south to my parents’ adopted home of Fort Myers, that much is true.  Close to pristine beaches and blue water, near to a great craft beer brewery or two, and surrounded by great times, close friends and family and a hearty helping of gourmet home cooking — it’s always a treat! Of course, if you follow me on Instagram, you’re familiar with my visits. And if not? Settle in for a few tips on men’s travel style from my trip. I last trekked down to Florida with my favorite #menswear during a Style Guide spring break visit this past March, and that came not long after I celebrated Christmas in style in Fort Myers. That being said, it never gets old ditching rugged spring outerwear for a bit of much-needed sun! And as always, this trip put my packing mettle to the test.

From NYC to Fort Myers, menswear in tow. Trucker Jacket by Levi’s. Striped Pocket Tee and Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos by JACHS NY. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Havana Sunglasses by Component. Nylite Sneakers by Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn. Brass bottle opener and Flight Brief by Owen and Fred. Fillmore Headphones by LSTN Sound Co. Explorer’s Cap by Huckberry.

My last major trip took me to Pittsburgh to see Local Natives — needless to say, conditions were a little bit different (in a great way!), as I hopped a quick flight to Fort Myers. To take on a breezy NYC day and travel thereafter, my Levi’s Trucker Jacket in a seasonally friendly light wash was an easy-to-wear outer layer — and it was just as easy to cram into my trusty Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender when getting off the plane in Fort Myers. Thanks to my casual office dress code, I was able to sneak in two great pieces from my pals at JACHS NY — the breathable, comfortable Striped Pocket Tee and sharp Red Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos, featuring a single pleat for modern style. Be on the lookout for similarly easygoing pieces for your next jaunt to a warm-weather locale — and perhaps bring along your own pair of the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, as I did. When teamed up with my rugged-yet-crisp Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch and my reliable Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, the combo worked for the plane ride … and then grabbing a Corona shortly after arrival.

Beach essentials for a sunny Florida day. T-shirt by Flint and Tinder. 311 Boardshorts by Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder. Calypso Watch by MVMT Watches. Legend Sneakers by SeaVees. Sunglasses by Component. Pomade by Fatboy Hair.

As it so turns out, Friday was a bright, beautiful and sunny day in Florida — the absolute perfect day to hit the beach and kick off a mini-vacation. No matter where your travels take you, you should start the day with men’s grooming essentials — as it were, I styled my ‘do for the day with the clean and sharp Sea Salt Pomade from Brooklyn’s own Fatboy Hair. And on the apparel front: Simple style always starts with the basics — like a stylish Flint and Tinder T-shirt, made in America with marled fabric. It was a classic complement to my new favorite pair of swim trunks, the beach-ready 311 Boardshorts from the excellent Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_120x90

Stylish beach gear (Corona not included) from the Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration and my new Component sunglasses. Shot on an iPhone 7 Plus.

And it wouldn’t be a day of exploration without my Legend Sneakers from the fine folks at SeaVees — effortless style finely accented by the durable, handsome and functional MVMT Watches Calypso Watch.  And for kicking back on the beach, I needed a few more items. Step one: Enter the stylish headphones via the Vibes Box from Bespoke Post. Step two: Enter my wearable and sharp Component sunglasses . The next time you head to the beach, don’t leave behind your stylish beach gear. And with a day of beach-going and pool relaxation in the books, it was time for a classic Hayhoe family cookout. I’d tell you all about my dad’s ribs, but that recipe is a secret!

Functional picks that mix the preppy — my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — with the utilitarian (my Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts). Reazer Drive Loafers by Clarks. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Bransen Diver by CHAPS.

Of course, no trip to Florida would be complete without a Saturday trip to Fort Myers Beach — teamed with seasonal style that fit right in, of coruse. In this instance, that meant my new Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts were a comfortable, transitional style move — able to move seamlessly from water to land thanks to quick-drying technology. The tailored fit also nicely complemented my slim, tailored and classic Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in a crisp shade of white. You might recognize the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry — I can vouch that it performed admirably in the heat as I soaked up the sun and sipped a few Coronas.
Sutro Shoes Inc.
And the next time you want to inject a bit of continental style into a polo-and-shorts combo, take the Clarks Reazor Drive Loafer in a bright shade of Blue Nubuck — mine proved quite comfortable and very easy to slip on and off. And when matched up with stylish accessories (specifically, the Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses and the well-priced CHAPS Bransen Diver, courtesy of the brand), I was more than set for a full day of exploration in the Florida sun. A dive watch and versatile shades will work anywhere you travel this summer — especially Florida.

Greats

Gear that doesn’t compromise style in the heat. Wenlock Chambray Shirt by United by Blue. Linen trousers by Bridge and Burn. Penny loafers by Sebago. SYD Leather Watch by Nautica. Brass bottle opener by Owen and Fred. Sunglasses by Component. Pencil by Delfonics.

It should come as no surprise that a day of rest and relaxation — along with another backyard BBQ — was in order on Sunday following two busy days in the sun. I still took on the heat in style though, starting with my slim-fitting and uniquely designed United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. You might recognize this United By Blue summer essential from my Style Pick of the Week series — with a tailored fit, soft fabric and a cool pattern, the Wenlock Chambray Shirt proved a Florida winner. Particularly when matched up with my cotton-linen blend Bridge and Burn Roark Olive Trousers, I stayed quite cool in the sun. Getting around was also made easier thanks once again to my Component sunglasses, mixing vintage inspiration and a modern edge. I was pleased once again with the tough functionality of my Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch, and I injected a bit of dressy detailing into the ensemble with the Sebago Legacy Penny Loafers in a head-turning shade of red leather. Look for similar day-to-night, transitional pieces the next time you’re searching for a full-day, warm-weather outfit.

Plenty of #menswear to pack into my Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender, from my Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt to my Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts. Waterbury Chronograph by Timex. Sneakers by Gola. Leadbelly Sunglasses by Electric. Steno Book by Field Notes Brand.

Monday so far promises a full day of Florida relaxation — and a crucial day off work — before heading back to NYC. I brought more on-point gear to fight off the heat, starting with another Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — the organic cotton  of the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt is breathable and comfortable. My Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts also do a fine job at wicking sweat in a tailored silhouette. And my Gola Classics Comet Plimsoll Trainers add a dash of sporty style to this classic look. Of course, my durable and rugged Timex Waterbury Chronograph (in a cool matte black) has so far paired up nicely with my Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses for one last day in the Florida sun.

Looking back on this weekend, it absolutely brought with it everything I had hoped for — relaxing beach time, some much-needed sand and sun (as always), and plenty of meaningful time with family. In the hustle and bustle of New York City (and in the hustle and bustle of planning for these trips!), life can sometimes fly by very quickly, and yet … this weekend was simply the ideal way to kick off summer. I hope you experienced much of the same on your end this weekend. Know that there’s plenty more travel and plenty more menswear to come on The Style Guide, including a look tomorrow at what to wear to a music festival.

Thanks, as always, for reading!

The Friday Read: The xx, Stitch Fix and Menswear Essentials to Own

As I write this edition of the Friday Read, I’m kicking off day two of a much-needed and long-awaited trip to Florida to see my family! I was previously here on a little Style Guide spring break of sorts back in March, but given the Memorial Day weekend holiday, it’s even better to be back. That also begs the question — what are you wearing this weekend? Hopefully, you’ve got a stylish pair of spring sneakers in tow for wherever your travels might take you.  Of course, you’d do well not to forget stylish accessories, like essential grooming accessories or a great pair of headphones. In that case, the Bespoke Post Vibes Box would probably be of interest — trust me.  As it were, I’ve got all of those essentials with me here on this trip (but if you follow me on Instagram, you know that already).  In any case, let’s look back on this past week. In addition to keeping up with all things menswear, I also had the stunning, nearly unheard-of chance to see British electro-pop rockers The xx play two incredible shows (back-to-back!) last weekend at the lovely, iconic Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. Touring behind one of the year’s best albums — the beautifully crafted “I See You,” they’ve come into their own more than any time before — the result is a poignant, moving and emotional show. In short, go see them on their expanded North American tour! It’s worth a listen as you kick back on Friday evening, absolutely. And with that, I’ll leave you to this week’s #menswear news.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

Stitch Fix

Via the Stitch Fix styling service, you can get pieces like the Cole Haan Grand Pro Sneaker delivered right to your door — as easy as it gets. Cotton jersey blazer and white chinos by Johnston and Murphy. Striped T-shirt by Bourbon and Blue. Watch by Nautica. Adventure Log by Word Notebooks.

  • Ever feel like your wardrobe could use a seasonal refresh? Same here.  Yet, there are other — even easier  — Stitch Fix ways to get expert style advice. Namely, the good folks at offer personalized styling services that result in a sharp selection of menswear for your enjoyment (like the sharp, easy-to-wear Cole Haan Grand Pro Sneakers seen above — my favorite from my own box!). Seriously, it’s all customized to your tastes after a series of simple questions. And what’s more, you only pay for what you keep. Yes indeed, it’s that great. I’d encourage you to sign up for Stitch Fix now — you won’t regret it!

  • Let’s talk more menswear, shall we? When Sunspel puts its stamp of approval on a collaboration, you can be sure it’s got the goods — the brand made James Bond’s polo shirt in Casino Royale, for goodness’ sakes. So that’s what makes the brand’s approach on its Sunspel x Iffey Road collaboration so neat. The heritage knitwear maker teamed up with the British running gear aficionados on pieces like the functional, breathable and technical Stanton Pique Polo, for instance. It features Iffey Road’s drirelease fabric merged with the same silhouette as the brand’s Riviera Polo. That’s a winning combination. And if you’re a track fan, you might recognize the name Iffey Road — it’s the site where Sir Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile mark in 1954. In short: That should be more than enough performance pedigree (and style!) to keep you cool all summer long.

Greats

  • Alright, let’s keep it moving here toward the weekend — shall we? #OOTD: What to Wear to a Weekend Barbecue

You just got word that there’s a barbecue this weekend. Craft beer? Check. Burgers? You got it. But what #menswear to wear to man the grill or just hang out while sipping brews? We’ve got you covered today on The Style Guide — from A-to-Z, this is the place to be. It’s a little bit different than, say, dressing for a spring bar crawl — it’s more casual and requires gear that’s as stylish as it is suited to wear to play a little pick-up football. And you’ll want an extra layer in case the party runs late or it gets chilly out there. So, we’re keeping it cool and laidback with today’s #OOTD. You’ll recognize upgraded basics — from a classic bomber jacket to a sturdy striped tee — and you’ll recognize tried-and-true favorites like stylish brown leather sneakers and slim light wash jeans.  See? Comfortable, casual and classic style at its finest. But, I won’t spoil all the fun now. Check out the full set of #menswear picks below, chime in on Twitter and see how I style my daily ensembles over on Instagram (lotsa clothes on the ‘Gram, trust me). Enjoy, cheers and be sure to man the grill!

Outerknown

Start with a supremely high-quality tee and go from there with casual spring layers.

The T-Shirt: Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt, $62.98 —  Let’s start things off the right way — with a sustainably made and uniquely stylish striped pocket T-shirt. Yes indeed, the Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt is pricey, yes …. but ultimately worth it. Just don’t spill any mustard on it.

The Jacket: Outlier Supermarine Soft Core Bomber Jacket, $595 — First off, this jacket surely is pricey. But why go for a paper-thin bomber jacket from a fast-fashion retailer when you can get a comfortable, stylish and very performance-ready piece fit for spring breezes and beyond?

Florsheim
The Jacket: Flint and Tinder All-American Washed Jeans in Slim Tapered, $98  — I’m all for investing in quality — and that’s exactly what Flint and Tinder brings to the table. These slim-fit light wash jeans have a pleasing light wash that’s perfect for spring.
The Sneakers: Pikolinos Vic Trainers, $200 — While you might be tempted to break out the flip-flops, leave those in the closet this time. These beautifully crafted leather sneakers feature everything from a rich brown colorway to cool and eye-catching stitching.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

The Watch: Nautica SYD Leather Watch, $125 — Nothing screams barbecue-ready style than a tough, rugged and stylish watch. This Nautica timepiece looks unique and crisp — it can definitely stand up to a game of backyard football, too.

The Bottle Opener: Billykirk Bottle Opener, $17.98 — Here’s the piece de resistance, perhaps the most crucial item in your everyday carry for this barbecue — the Billykirk Bottle Opener should be the hit of the party, ehh?

The Beer: Founders Brewing All Day IPA, Price Varies — It might be the Michigan native in me coming through, but there might not be a better summer BBQ beer than Founder’s All Day IPA. I absolutely love visiting the brewery when I trek back to Grand Rapids, and that won’t change soon!

The Bag: Nisolo Lori Tote, $134.98 — OK, so you’ve got your six-pack of craft beer, you’ve got your slim bomber jacket, you’re wearing your stylish striped tee — how are you going to carry everything you need to carry? In the durable and handsome Nisolo Lori Tote, I should say.

Greats

And, there it is. All set for your first summer barbecue? With classic, easy-to-wear pieces like a slim bomber jacket and the Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt, I’d say you should be all set for anything that comes your way. And a pair of denim like the Flint and Tinder All-American Washed Jeans in Slim Tapered are about as versatile and stylish as it gets when it comes to a casual pair of jeans for the weekend. Add in essential everyday carry pieces like a tough Nautica watch, well-made leather sneakers and the strong Nisolo Lori Tote and you can get from the barbecue and back in style. Oh, and don’t forget an absolute must-have — that’d be the Billykirk Bottle Opener, folks. Alright, I’ll see you at the grill!

Thanks for reading and stay stylish,

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Memorial Day This Year

Check your calendars, hurry — it’s Memorial Day weekend comin’ at ya!  And if you’re wondering how to dress for Memorial Day, you’ll like today’s post. It’s the first real full summer weekend, and that’s much-welcomed around these parts. If you missed out on taking a spring road trip or hitting the road for spring break, it’s a chance to get away from town and hopefully enjoy some lovely weather and time with friends & the fam.  I’ll be trekking down to Florida for a  great long weekend with family, and I had the chance to travel to upstate New York for Memorial Day last year — both prime chances to break out some stellar #menswear. So, let’s assume you’ve got gear like a stylish leather weekend bag and a functional dopp kit at the ready — what are you going to wear at your destination? Be it exploring a boardwalk, strolling through a quaint downtown or catching some rays, today’s Style Guide suggestion has it all. Let me know what you think over on Twitter, and keep up with my fast-moving style on Instagram.

The Shirt: Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe — $84

Criquet Shirts

A new take on the polo shirt, with a tailored fit and comfortable fabric.

Listen up: If you’re looking for a warm-weather staple that can work just as stylishly at a Memorial Day barbecue as at a patio bar, pick up the Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe. Like the much-loved Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — as seen in this #OOTD —  the Club Shirt is a modern, refined and comfortable take on your favorite polo shirt. It features both retro details, like cool stripes plus contrasting sleeve cuffs and collar, and a streamlined fit. Yessir, the Club Shirt could be a new summer go-to. Be sure to layer up with transitional spring outerwear if gets chilly.

Sutro Footwear

The Bottoms: Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts — $138 OR Alex Crane Bo Shorts — $59.98

Alex Crane

Two options, two scenarios. Grab the right pair of shorts for play, grab the left pair of shorts to swim.

So, we’re tackling two different scenarios here. Let’s say your Memorial Day involves some time at the pool, the beach or the lake — break out the retro-inspired, durable and stylish Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts. They’re made by hand, the color scheme is neutral and sharp, and they’re more tailored than your average pair of swim trunks. If, on the other hand, you’re manning the grill, the Alex Crane Bo Shorts, in a neutral and unexpected Sand color, are a prime pick (and they’ll contrast nicely with the striped Club Shirt).

The Sneakers: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $108

SeaVees

Versatile kicks that are a favorite of this blog for several reasons — including the easygoing good looks.

Is it any surprise that we’re reaching for classic, easily wearable and versatile slip-on sneakers like the SeaVees Huntington Middie? They’re a favorite for a number of reasons, from the durable chukka-like cut to the clean white color and the ability to wear to the beach, to the pool or to the boardwalk. You could even wear these ones with slim light wash jeans as you travel to your Memorial Day getaway, and they’re perfect to wear to kick back over a cold brew.

The Watch: Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch — $449.98

Deep Blue Watches

A striking watch with tough specs and dependable style for the road, for the beach and beyond.

Here’s where we really drive home the idea of versatile, accessible style. Heading out for a four-day weekend? You just might be all set with one watch — that’s right, just one. The Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch  is that very timepiece, what with the durable specs to work on land or at sea, with great style to go along with it. Take it in the pool, take it in the ocean and wear it to grill burgers after — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch merges rugged good looks with dependable style.

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses — $109.98

Raen Optics

Sharp and modern-yet-retro style in a pair of sunglasses that barely top $100.

We here at The Style Guide champion the idea of style that looks great and goes wherever you go — that’s also the case when it comes to accessories. And when you consider the vintage look and sharp style of the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses, you get all of that and then some. Handcrafted in France, the Arlo Sunglasses, just like the SeaVees Huntington Middie, can go all manner of places beyond Memorial Day weekend. And when you break ’em out to head to the beach, you just might be the best-dressed guy there.
Greats

The Essentials: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal — $39.98 AND Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash — $184.98

Billykirk

Two easy-to-wear and easy-to-pair summer style picks.

You’ll notice we’re sticking with a neutral, essential color palette of charcoal for these two fine and dandy everyday carry pieces. If you’re going to be spending time out in the sun — patio bar or beach — you’ll need some stylish protection from the sun. Enter the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  — who doesn’t love a well-made, retro-inspired ballcap? And the Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash is a mighty fine way to lug around a six-pack, your sunscreen and perhaps stylish wireless headphones to wear at the beach.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

The Must-Have: Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit — $43.98

Oars + Alps

The handy, simple-to-use and effective grooming kit to bring with you.

Whether you’re taking a plane, a train or an automobile (get it?) to your Memorial Day getaway, you need quick and easy grooming solutions. With effective performance and an easily packable nature, the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit could be just the solution you need. I covered it recently in my Style Pick of the Week series, and it’s a surefire winner in terms of keeping your skin looking fresh — no matter how many brews you have this weekend.

The “Gift” for the Party: GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg — $149

GrowlerWerks

With this uKeg, you’re instantly the hit of the party.

Now, the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg is pretty hefty — to say the least. So, let’s assume it’s not necessarily coming with you on your trip. But if you’re hosting or merely heading across town, it’s a thoughtful gesture to bring along a spot of choice brew for that Memorial Day cookout. Best of all? It’s a functional piece geared to keep beer cold and fresh — yet the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg has a nice dash of vintage style thrown in for good measure.

Florsheim

Folks, that’ll about do it in the way of our Memorial Day style roundup. From handy accessories like the stylish Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  to the durable Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash, make sure you start with the right basics for your trip or barbecue. And for versatile style, be sure to pack (or wear) the easygoing Alex Crane Bo Shorts and the versatile SeaVees Huntington Middie. I can’t emphasize enough the need to bring along a rugged dive watch — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch is the way to. And for time kicking back in the sun, the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses are handsome and effective.  OK, I think that’s all the basics covered — right? Enjoy the weekend, folks — we’ll see you out there!

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Sneakers to Buy for Spring and Summer

Do you have your pair of spring and summer kicks sorted out? Better yet, do you have any of the best sneakers to buy for spring and summer? If not, we’re setting out to change that in a big way today — and I think you’ll be mighty pleased with the #menswear picks we’ve got on tap.  Whereas in the past, sneakers might have meant athletic shoes stamped with a large logo, you need not fear — today’s breed of kicks are essential, clean and crisp. They’re fit for wearing with everything from slim light wash denim to chino shorts and a heathered pocket tee. And yes, the right pair of spring sneakers can even work with a lightweight navy blazer (not to mention a standout leather jacket at your next spring bar crawl or casual weekend outing).  So, where exactly are we getting these sneakers from? You’ll notice picks from Style Guide favorites like SeaVees and Abercrombie & Fitch, among others. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, though. Read on, shop away and chime in with any questions on Twitter — I’ll respond just as quick as I can (even if I’m getting another cup of coffee).

#1. Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers — $70

A classic silhouette updated for today’s modern man — at a low price and in a neat fabric.

We here in The Style Guide’s crowded fashion department of one have always loved the pleasingly streamlined, easy to wear, versatile Tretorn Nylite Sneaker. The style is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, in fact — that means it’s a classic primed for an update. Who better to do it than the new head of design at A&F, Mr. Aaron Levine? Levine’s work at Abercrombie — including heritage-inspired pieces like the Abercrombie & Fitch Wool Shirt — riffs on the classics in modern ways, and these garment-dyed sneakers are certainly modern enough for the rest of us. Buy ’em now and wear ’em out, especially with rolled light wash denim and a patterned shirt.

#2. House of Future Original Sneaker — $76.98

House of Future Original Sneaker

A classic-looking sneaker available at an attainable price — nothing gets better.

Want the look of a modern-day classic like the Common Projects Achilles — as clean of a white leather sneaker as it gets — for way less cash? Enter the House of Future Original Sneaker, currently available now for a downright steal via Huckberry — for that price, we’ll let the red heel accent slide. These are the sneakers to wear with an unlined navy blazer and chambray trousers on a breezy Friday, and you could even team them up with casual linen trousers and an indigo pocket tee for an extra-long weekend brunch. The fact that you get a super-clean silhouette and excellent quality? Well … what are you waiting for?

Sutro Shoes Inc.

#3. SeaVees Maslon Desert Boot — $84.98

SeaVees

The cut of a chukka and the weight (and good looks) of a sneaker.

Did you think we’d make it through a post on the best men’s sneakers without covering off on a Style Guide favorite? Surely not. The laidback cool, clean design and easygoing style potential of SeaVees sneakers makes the brand a consistent winner — not to mention the attainable pricing and spring break-ready style.  That’s why the Maslon Desert Boot is a choice pick for your next spring or summer sneaker upgrade.  Blending the DNA of a boot and a sneaker with a poplin twill upper in a head-turning shade of deep navy, these are the sneakers you should wear with a striped tee and classic khaki chinos.

#4. Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up — $145

Johnston and Murphy

A simple court-style shoe with neat styling details.

We’re back to discussing cleanly crafted, sharp-looking white sneakers here for option number four — and with plenty good reason. Johnston and Murphy has taken the same approach that makes its stylish leather boots so good, and translated that to sharp low-top white sneakers. With a textured leather upper and the styling to mimic a classic court shoe, the Allister Lace-up is the sneaker to wear with olive chinos and a heather grey polo for a Casual Friday look that’s a significant (yes, significant) style upgrade.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_125x125

#5. Pikolinos Vic Trainers — $200

Pikolinos

Rich craftsmanship and distinctive leather set these apart.

We’re all about reaching for unexpected sneaker styles with a touch of flair — provided they’re made with proper craftsmanship, that is. And in this case, the Pikolinos Vic Trainers  blend the feel of a pair of retro runner sneakers with the rich leather and comfort for which Pikolinos is known. If ever you’ve wanted to try out the navy blazer-light wash denim-leather sneakers combo that I so love, these are the ones to do it with — the brown leather makes them feel a bit more like a dress shoe (just a bit).

Honorable Mention: SeaVees Mariner Boot — $178

SeaVees Mariner Boot

A high-top sneaker crafted with durable fabric for winning style throughout spring and summer.

If you follow along with ye olde Style Guide, you’re aware that we love the SeaVees Mariner Boot for its blend of durability, rain-ready style and clean looks. In a cool and unique shade of olive, they’re a neat pairing with light grey or navy chinos and a white henley for a mix of high and low. Plus, they’ll work nicely whether you’re stomping around a summer music festival or working your away from coffee shop to coffee shop.

And that’ll nicely finish up our runthrough of the best men’s sneakers for spring. From the uniquely durable and weather-ready SeaVees Mariner Boot to the smart, retro-yet-modern Pikolinos Vic Trainers, your closet should be filled with options for the season ahead. A clean and classic pair of sneakers like the House of Future Original Sneaker are suitable for occasions both slightly dressier and laidback, and the Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up is similarly versatile for work or play. And as we covered above, the Maslon Desert Boot can pull double-duty on a spring road trip or a weekend coffee run. Round out your rotation with the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, and you should be set this season! What do you think of the above picks? Feel free to hop on over to The Style Guide Facebook page or leave a missive in the comments.

Stay stylish,
