The Friday Read: AC/DC in Cleveland & The Best Summer Workwear From Huckberry

Well, my friends: It’s official. For the second time this month, I’ve managed to squeeze in a properly iconic, truly rocking show by Australian icons and personal heroes AC/DC. If you’ve been reading this Brooklyn style blog for years, you know I tend to dabble in music writing — among my many other freelance writing pursuits, of course — and that I’ve got a true love for guitar-driven rock music.

It all started with AC/DC years ago, as I wrote on this very blog when I saw AC/DC in Tampa Bay just a few weeks ago, and if you’ve kept up with me on Instagram, you’ll see I haven’t slowed down one bit (and neither has my first favorite band!).

This week saw a trek to Cleveland for a mix of business and pleasure: In the midst of writing about the best leather chukka boots for men, I made time to trek back to the Midwest once more in pursuit of the best craft beer, the best summer menswear from Huckberry and certainly, the pursuit of the all-encompassing power of genre-defining, game-changing rock music.

I’ve also covered a lot of ground when it comes to all things music on this very blog, including how to dress for a rock concert and how to dress in rock n’roll style: For me, that meant a combination of rugged Taylor Stitch denim and a classic T-shirt purchased earlier in the day at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame — what a pairing, ehh?

I’ve stayed plenty busy even on the road, covering the likes of the Huckberry x Ford capsule collection at Maxim.com — rugged workwear aplenty is the name of the game — and carving out time to taste the best Cleveland craft beer. It goes without saying, but the fun continues back in Brooklyn this weekend with two summer style blog posts for your reading and shopping pleasure.

For now, I’m going to reflect fondly on my time in Cleveland, and my time seeing one of the greatest rock bands on the planet, over a cold beer or two. Join me, won’t you? Cheers to the weekend, cheers to summer style essentials and as always, long live rock n’roll!

The Friday Read: The AC/DC PWR UP Tour, the Best Spring Weekend Menswear & Tampa Bay Craft Beer

It’s not every day that a blog post via my Brooklyn style blog leads off with a reference to AC/DC — nor an AC/DC show on the horizon, right?? The Aussie rockers were my first favorite band years ago growing up in Michigan — where I’ve spent much of the past week reconnecting with family and friends (and attending my high school class reunion!). Yes, if you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ll have seen all of that fun — and Michigan craft beer — and more.

I’ve come a long way since those days ridin’ down the highway back in Michigan jamming out to those legendary rockers, but my latest excursion south to Florida brings the promise of another show by an iconic band, this time in Tampa Bay.

If you’ve followed along with the blog over the years, especially as I’ve talked about live music adventures in Brooklyn and even how to dress for a rock concert, plus how to dress in rock n’roll style, my tastes have certainly changed, but the band still holds a very, very special place in my heart. In fact, this will remarkably be my fourth time (dating back to 2008!) seeing Acca Dacca. How about that!?

And that all means that, thanks to a timely Christmas gift from my mom… my dad and I get to see these giants of rock n’roll this very weekend in Tampa Bay! It’s a departure from the norm (although “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” still holds a prime placement on my Spotify!), but so great and a positively exciting return to my roots, in a way, all the same.

Again, long before I started this Brooklyn style blog and later had the chance to travel to the French Riviera, cover the finest spirits in the world and write all about my favorite menswear, well, there was AC/DC.

And as a wise author once wrote in Esquire years ago, a band like AC/DC will never die — the world will always need a band like AC/DC. Lofty praise considering most of my coverage skews towards the best new gear and watches, yes? But again, perspective is important, as is the chance to just plain old rock out.

If you happen to have any recommendations for Tampa — perhaps some of the best Tampa Bay craft beer via Cigar City? — then those selections truly are welcomed (and you can let me know via Instagram!).

As for my wardrobe in the Florida heat, I look forward to wearing a new duo of menswear from Taylor Stitch (canvas fatigue-inspired shorts and a simple black T-shirt from Taylor Stitch, namely). Just like the straightforward, high-voltage rock music of AC/DC, sometimes, keeping things simple is best — and pays the most dividends in terms of consistency over time, ehh?

The Friday Read: Paul Fredrick Deals, New Balance Sneakers and Labor Day Weekend

Can you believe it’s Friday? More importantly, can you believe it’s the Friday before Labor Day weekend? Where did the time go? For this style writer, a lot of this past month has been spent on the road — this particular week, that mean a long, relaxing (and fairly stylish) summer vacation to Florida, including some excellent time spent in the sun and sand. Plus, the trip was capped off by a standout AC/DC concert at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale — I think my hearing is still recovering. Seriously, though — what a band. You can read much more here, but know that it was worth the early, early flight back to New York the next morning (to say the least). Throughout this past month, it’s also been great to travel back to Michigan for a wedding weekend and a Grand Rapids trip (all the while focused on travel style). I’ve also been really thankful this summer to check so many items off my to-do list, from an upstate trip to see Lucius, one of my favorite bands, to a standout weekend at Governors Ball and a heck of a Saturday at Panorama. The chance to travel so many neat places, spend so much time with great friends and check out so many cool sights and sounds is one I definitely don’t take for granted — and I hope it’s been a summer of checking things off your to-do list as well (with plenty of highlights, to boot!). But we’re not done yet — with Labor Day coming up, there are still plenty of chances to dress in style; what else would you expect? And we’ve got a jam-packed next few weeks of content — you can look out for a Fall Style Wish List and neat features that run the gamut from what to wear during football season to more personal travel style posts. Catching some rays: A summer vacation in Florida

It might seem hard to believe, but today ends a whirlwind stretch of 12 out of 17 days on the road for me — yes, that’s right! That included a trip West to Liberty Fairs, plus a wedding weekend in Michigan, all fun in their own way, and all involving some stellar #menswear (if I do say so myself). Given that I’ve grown pretty accustomed to hitting the road as of late, it made my next trip all the more enjoyable; it’s not all that often that I get to head South to visit my family in Florida, but it’s always a special occasion. In this case, I was able to celebrate my mom’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Mom!) and take in a truly epic AC/DC concert with my dad in nearby Fort Lauderdale — but more on that in a second. I was last in Fort Myers in March (a Style Guide spring break, if you will), and this go-round, I was able to bring along a different — yet hopefully just as stylish — set of men’s style essentials for a longer trip (Friday to Wednesday morning, as it were!).

That started, as always, from the ground up. I’ve realized the importance of making sure your small items are both durable and stylish — such is the case with my Herschel Supply Chapter Travel Kit, an easy-to-pack, easy-to-use dopp kit that sheds water (the wide array of colors doesn’t hurt, either). It fit nicely inside my reliable-as-ever Owen & Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender, which actually ended up holding about six days worth of gear (see, that’s versatile dressing — wink, wink). I also packed up a durable Stitchmill Henley and other easily wearable pieces. On a side note — if you’re going to grab one henley, you might want to make it a slim-fitting, made-in-America purchase from Stitchmill. But onto the rest of the trip. As I headed right from the office in NYC to the plane, I took advantage of a very casual Friday and threw on my OLIVERS Capital Shorts and the lightweight, comfortable Stio Divide Polo, both of which provided nice freedom of movement and versatility for moving from work to a flight and dinner. Of course, my Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes were also durable and crisp for a half-day in the office and the resulting flight to Florida, which proved to be longer than expected thanks to some travel delays. The time spent in the air was more than recovered thanks to a few tasty brews at Twin Peaks, brewers of four in-house beers and some excellent pub fare, including the Billionaire Bacon Burger. Friday night done right!

With a busy work week and travel day in the books, it made Saturday all the more enjoyable — it was time for a relaxing beach day with fittingly casual apparel. That meant I threw on the Fourlaps Apparel Dash Tank, because everyone could use a little sun now and then. I covered the brand in a piece on the best athleisure brands for men, and they’re worth checking out if you want performance-minded apparel that’s a little more bold — and a little less logo-heavy — than your average tank top. It was an easygoing complement to my JackThreads Swim Trunks, which were pretty sharp in a deep navy color. Beach-ready footwear is an essential, and a pair of casual grey sneakers from the Masafumi Watanabe x Reef collaboration were just the ticket, able to stand up to sand & the walk through the parking lot after. Perhaps the most versatile timepiece I brought with me was my Invicta 8926 Pro Diver — I’ve had that thing for about three years now (it even nabbed a spot in this site’s roundup of the best dive watches), and it fit right in underneath the sand & sun. Given the need to transition from situation to situation, I’d suggest you also grab a versatile, casual-yet-refined dive watch for your next waterfront outing.

For a trip to one of my favorite stops in the Fort Myers area (the excellent Point Ybel Brewing), I also kept it casual. The great thing about those OLIVERS Capital Shorts is that, minus repeated gym sessions, they can hold up to darn near anything (including a repeat wear for an easygoing dinner). My situation up top was also breezy and casual, as it was the prime opportunity to feature a fun vintage printed shirt. A regular (read: Non-vintage) printed short-sleeve shirt is the ideal way to have a bit of fun in the warm weather, and my reliable-as-always Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes worked just fine for grabbing a few pints. We topped off the night with a stellar dinner at legendary local spot Doc Ford’s — my parents would surely recommend the Yucatan Shrimp.

As one does in Floriday, Sunday provided another lovely opportunity to relax and explore at the same time. That meant a Sunday Funday trip to Punta Gorda and some exploration around the Fishermen’s Village shopping area (complete with a requisite stop at nearby Fat Point Brewing — get the Big Boca Ale to go in a growler, if you get the chance!). We also grabbed a tasty waterfront meal No trip to a beautiful waterfront locale would be complete without the chance to once again break out those Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes. which are a decidedly sleek upgrade to the typical boat shoe. They offset a new favorite pair of breezy tropical-print linen Todd Snyder shorts (an end-of-season sale pick-up) — they were sufficiently breezy, comfortable and yet stylish. Of course, accessories to fight the sun were also crucial — in this instance, that meant some Nautica sunglasses in a cool, retro-yet-modern (there is such a thing) Clubmaster-style shape. My trusty Tread for Men Traveler Sunscreen helped me fight the sun’s rays — seriously, don’t skip out on that — and although I reached for my Invicta 8926 Pro Diver for some pool time early in the day, my refined Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch — on a NATO strap, no less — was the perfect pick for more time in the Florida heat.

Unlike past trips to Florida, which required a quick turnaround, I had the chance to take a bit more time in and around the city of Fort Myers. That meant some pool time on Monday, and it also meant a chance to hit up downtown Fort Myers outpost The Lodge for a heck of a lunch and some stellar brews. The décor is rustic and alpine-themed, the barbeque is stellar and the selection of regional and national craft beers is on-point (the Cigar City Lager from Tampa is a crisp, easy-drinking upgrade to a Miller Lite, if that’s in your wheelhouse). To meet the occasion in style, I paired my Grayers Breton Stripe Tee (slim-fitting and comfortable) with the Stio Colter Pant, a slightly stretchy chino made from premium Turkish cotton. It moved well, and made it easy to stroll around town post-lunch — particularly when paired up with those trusty Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes and other style essentials, like my Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch. When you talk about pieces that mix crisp, modern style with a retro vibe, that timepiece is one of them — as is my trusty Bridge & Burn Flat Wool Cap, which came in handy shield my face from the sun. Despite some rain showers, it was an excellent day capped off by some delicious fried chicken at Sanibel Island hotspot The Pecking Order and a beautiful sunset on the beach.

So a tremendous day on Monday led to one (big) thing on Tuesday — the concert to end all concerts, an absolutely epic AC/DC show. That explains the authentic band tee (no knock-off designer band merch here!), my reliable Levi’s 505C Denim, (a rock-inspired jean perfect for the show), and some durable leather chukkas. But onto what truly was an explosive night! Say what you will about their music or their consistent (ahem, stubborn) approach to music, but AC/DC were one of the first bands I ever loved — and I love them to this day, personnel changes and all! The show was worth an entire blog post in and of itself, particularly when you snag prime second-row seats, as my dad and I did (I’m going to pause to try & recover some of my hearing now).

From the opening chords of “Rock Or Bust” to a blistering take on “Shoot to Thrill,” a ripping rendition of”Sin City” and the classic “High Voltage” — and every single song in between — Angus Young never stopped moving or peeling off insane riffs. And Axl Rose truly did sing his butt off, too — he’s no Brian Johnson, but he channels both Brian & Bon in one heck of a rock n’roll way (on-stage wardrobe choices aside). Even without Brian in the mix, the band is a sight to behold … they’re perhaps the last great “classic” rock band that tours consistently behind original music, and boy, do they put on a show. Chris Slade has proven an admirable fill-in behind the drum kit for Phil Rudd, and Stevie Young is his uncle Malcolm incarnate, holding down the engine room admirably on rhythm guitar. I could certainly go on, but suffice to say — Bon Scott would be proud of “the boys.” Next up — the band’s stop at Madison Square Garden in just about two weeks. Needless to say, I’m ready.

With all that being said, the trip still seemed to come to an end all too soon — that could’ve been the early wake-up call to get back to NYC on Wednesday, too. And my Levi’s 505C Denim worked again to travel back — the hint of stretch is key, and the durability made them an easy pick when matched with the simple, stylish Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch. It’s now time to power through the work day, and unpack my bag until I travel next. With Labor Day on the way though, I’ve got some stylish adventures planned — I’ll be exploring the buzzed-about town of Asbury Park (that’s New Jersey, folks), and bringing along some stylish essentials (of course). The Friday Read: Emerging Menswear Designers, Mack Weldon Underwear and Travel Style

Does it feel crazy that Labor Day is bearing down upon us? Wasn’t it just the Fourth of July? Heck, wasn’t it just Memorial Day? When you’ve been on the road so much — as I have — things start to move a little fast. It’s definitely been welcomed though, and I hope your summer has featured some great travel; I know I certainly had fun attending a Michigan wedding this past weekend, preceded by a stylish business trip to Las Vegas. Time on the road never ends, though — this weekend, I’m catching a flight to Florida to relax in the sand and sun with my parents! Just as with a Style Guide spring break trip to Florida earlier this year, I’m very much looking forward to getting some quality beach and pool time. There are a lot of great reasons to be in town, including celebrating my mom’s birthday (Hi, Mom!) and a long-awaited AC/DC concert in nearby Fort Lauderdale (yes, AC/DC — an all-time favorite!). Of course, the trip will definitely include some delicious meals, ample shopping time and stops through Fort Myers’ finest breweries — not to mention, an Instagram feature or two … or several (and a full travel style blog post next week). If you’ve got a trip of your own coming up, even if it’s just to the beach, bring along #menswear essentials and you’ll be all set. For now though, let’s kick back in style and prep for the weekend ahead — there’s a little bit of everything in the below Friday Read.

The Friday Read: Spring Sneakers, Brian Johnson and What Women Really Think of Menswear

So, did you survive Coachella last weekend? (Kidding? Maybe? If you went, how was it?) And how about this past week? It was another one that flew by, what with several press previews to check out from some great brands, ranging from Herschel to Jason Scott (the brand’s 8th Avenue store is very much worth a look if ever you find yourself in NYC, and the knitwear is exceptionally soft). On another press preview-related note, if you haven’t given the folks at AVI-8 Watches a look, their military-inspired timepieces are rugged, durable, and sure to get better in the coming montsh. It’s exciting to be able to see what’s happening in the menswear world at large, and you can look for a lot of that content in the coming weeks and months via my writing work at The Manual! And with fall press previews already ramping up, that means another thing in this moment, more importantly — spring is officially here (confusing, right?). If you’re heading out on a spring bar crawl, we’ve got some gear to get you ready. And if you’re wondering what to wear for a casual spring weekend, knock yourself out. I hope the weather’s nice in your neck of the woods — we’ve got a great one in the works here. Get some styling inspiration for yourself (if need be) via my Instagram. High fashion often leaves something out of the equation for those of us more interested in matters purely related to “style” — so the swirling rumors that a high-fashion designer (or designers) might join the more everyman-focused Calvin Klein are pretty interesting, to say the least.
Megan Collins (a good friend of The Style Guide) and some other stylish ladies spoke to Esquire.com earlier this week about what women really think of menswear trends — it’s a pretty neat piece!

Long Read of the Week: It was big news in my neck of the woods when it was announced that Axl Rose would replace Brian Johnson in AC/DC. If you’re a hard rock fan (read: A fan of one of the greatest bands in the world, for that matter), Brian himself. issued a really heartbreaking letter about how his hearing issues forced him to stop performing in AC/DC. Tough stuff to read — if you’re in a tough spot as to what to do about your tickets, that makes two of us!
