Style Pick of the Week: Filson Ranger Anorak – Spring’s Best Rain Jacket for Men

Best men's rain jacket for spring.

Well, my friends: We aren’t quite yet out of the woods in terms of spring rain and foul weather, so that’s where some of the best men’s spring gear is going to come in mighty handy, and that certainly includes one of the best men’s rain jackets.

If you read the blog, you’re well aware of the fact that a heritage outfitter like Filson is the place to go for the best spring style essentials, picks that will serve you well even if you deal more frequently with a city commute than days in the backcountry.

Either way, a pick like the rugged, rough-and-tumble Filson Ranger Anorak is sturdy, substantial and tough yet easy to wear — and it’s all part of the jam-packed Filson New Arrivals section, here just in time to outfit you for whatever spring adventures are still on your list.

Helpfully, the Filson Ranger Anorak carries on all the hallmarks of the brand you’ve come to know and love, whether you recently shopped the Filson Warehouse Sale or whether you’ve had some trusty Filson gear on hand for years now. With the Pacific Northwest outfitter, fabric is everything and the water-resistant waxed cotton of the Filson Ranger Anorak gets the job done, and then some.

Inspired by, as the brand says, vintage Arctic gear, this rugged anorak streamlines and lightens things up a bit, with design inspiration also coming by way of mountaineering and WWII-era artic smocks.

Colors like Dark Navy and Olive Drab give the Filson Ranger Anorak a classic look and feel, but the Expedition Orange colorway (with contrasting white detailing) is also a standout touch if you like your outerwear with just a touch of flair on drab days. There are helpful touches like a front snap-button pouch pocket, plus a front kangaroo-style pocket, while the drawcord waist offers maximum coverage in rainy, windy conditions.

Plus, the double-layer back on the Filson Ranger Anorak adds durability, while the large drawcord hood turns this hard-wearing anorak jacket into a true foul-weather companion. For good measure, the Filson Ranger Anorak offers room to layer other essentials you need on a brisk day, from a rugged Filson henley to your favorite lightweight flannel shirt.

Luckily, Filson has each of those picks in spades, but it’s the Filson Ranger Anorak that’s going to offer up supremely effective coverage this season. Act accordingly and shop now, my friends.

The Friday Read: Exploring Ireland with Glendalough Gin

Well, my friends: As hard as it might be to believe, considering that I was on the road in Minneapolis last weekend in pursuit of a whiskey-centric freelance writing story well, I’m on the road once more — but this time, the trip is a little more far-flung. I’ve been in Dublin and the rolling hills of Wicklow, Ireland since Tuesday as part of my freelance writing adventures, this time with the exceptional Glendalough Gin. While Glendalough also makes excellent whiskey, this venture is covering the process of obtaining botanicals for its gin, with a trek through the lush hills of Wicklow to complete the foraging experience.

I can’t share too much beyond that right now, but it’s been a wonderful trip to one of my favorite countries on the planet — complete with a day on Wednesday in Dublin visiting some of the city’s best bars and sipping Glendalough Gin in the process.

For a trip with such variety — from cocktail bars in Dublin to the wilds of Wicklow — I packed a few versatile favorites, like classic Mott and Bow blue jeans and a new pair of waxed Flint and Tinder pants from my friends at Huckberry. For your next trip abroad, I’d suggest you do the same!

And while I’ve covered the worlds of Scotch, Irish whiskey and bourbon, I’ve only lately begun dipping my toes (as a writer, that is!) in the world of high-quality gin. It’s one of many experiences in my freelance writing work for which I’m endlessly grateful, with the chance to expand my world and my comfort zone each and every day.

I’ve got a bit more time in Dublin yet before returning to New York City for what promises to be a lovely spring weekend, so in the meantime, be sure you’re keeping up with my pursuits over on my Instagram. Cheers and thanks for reading!

The Thursday Buy: This Buck Mason Short-Sleeve Shirt is a Rugged Style Classic for Spring

Best chambray shirt for men to buy now.

Among any great wardrobe, or any great list of menswear essentials, the best style moves often spring from functional, humble beginnings — like one of the best men’s chambray shirts, for instance. If you read the blog, we’ve talked recently about the rugged-yet-versatile appeal of the chambray shirt, made with a textured white-and-blue cotton weave (also known as warp and weft fibers).

It’s more lightweight than your favorite flannel shirt, but just as durable and versatile, and that’s what makes the Buck Mason M025 Chambray Short-Sleeve Shirt a certified winner in my book. You’re getting the breezy nature of a short-sleeve shirt, plus the cool-as-can-be look of chambray, all from one of the best online menswear brands around — and that’s only the beginning.

Helpfully, you’ll find it within the well-stocked Buck Mason New Arrivals section, which is as great a place as any to check out your new spring and summer favorites, but let’s dig a little deeper into this shirt itself, shall we?

As you might expect with this all-American brand, the Buck Mason M025 Chambray Short-Sleeve Shirt retains the same stellar qualities as its long-sleeve counterpart, but with the more laidback nature of a short-sleeve shirt. Buck Mason notes that the 100 percent cotton Tulare Chambray should prove lightweight and breathable, with a slimmer body and some room through the chest and shoulders.

A word to the wise: Consider taking the Buck Mason M025 Chambray Short-Sleeve Shirt one size up if you’d like room to layer over a Buck Mason T-shirt, for instance. Here’s another thing about this rugged chambray shirt: You’ve got options when it comes to wearing it, from styling it open over a slub tee or your favorite henley, wearing it buttoned up with tan chinos and the best leather loafers, or wearing it underneath a lightweight navy blazer (no one will be any the wiser!).

The bottom line is that you need the durable texture and lightweight feel of chambray in your spring and summer wardrobe, and the Buck Mason M025 Chambray Short-Sleeve Shirt is one heck of a place to start. Happy shopping, my friends.

See Now, Buy Now: This Todd Snyder Utility Shirt is the Ideal Overshirt for Breezy Spring Days

Best men's shirt jacket for spring.

There are times where, perhaps when you least expect it, the tides turn, the weather shifts and you need to shift gears in your wardrobe. That tends to happen pretty frequently during spring, when sunny days unexpectedly give way to blustery breezes — so, what’s a guy to do? Layer up accordingly for spring with one of the best men’s overshirts, of course.

For all those days when it’s not quite T-shirt weather, yet not quite breezy enough to wear, say, a stylish puffer jacket, that’s where your new favorite overshirt comes into play. Of course, you can leave it to one of America’s best menswear designers to come up with a rugged-meets-refined take on the stylish men’s shirt jacket, and that approach is fully on display with the Todd Snyder Two-Pocket Utility Shirt.

As with most things Todd Snyder, the inspiration is simple and classic — old-school overshirts — yet the final product is an upgrade in every way, especially in terms of fabric, durability and a crisp, utilitarian design.

The Todd Snyder Two-Pocket Utility Shirt has some helpful bells and whistles, as its name implies, including two large front flap patch chest pockets. Those pockets turn the Todd Snyder Two-Pocket Utility Shirt into a handy layer for storing your everyday carry, and the double-needle construction ensures durability at key stress points.

But again, this isn’t quite your average workshirt. You see, the Todd Snyder Two-Pocket Utility Shirt is made with 100 percent Italian cotton — and it’s made in Portugal, which makes this a casually rugged shirt jacket made for more leisurely pursuits than long days in the yard.

It’s the kind of versatile layer every guy needs, one that can be worn unbuttoned over your favorite T-shirt or one of the best men’s henleys. Plus, this rugged-meets-refined shirt jacket comes in a surprising array of colors (six total), delivering something for every sense of personal style. And while the Todd Snyder Two-Pocket Utility Shirt is an investment at almost $180, it’s the kind of durable overshirt you can count on in the clutch, time and time again.

The Sunday Sale: Save More Than 40 Percent at Huckberry on the Best Men’s Sweatpants

Best men's sweatpants.

If you read the blog on the regular, you know that your favorite Brooklyn style writer is all about making small style upgrades in as many different ways as possible, be it a better spring jacket, a stylish new spring polo or even a new pair of stylish sweatpants. Yes, that’s right: Your sweatpants (especially in these post-pandemic times) are actually getting more streamlined and wearable than ever, and that’s certainly the case if you cruise through the Huckberry Sale section these days.

Within that well-stocked Sale section, you’ll find the Taylor Stitch Apres Pants, which you can secure right now for more than 40 percent off. The Apres Pants fall right in line with the Taylor Stitch ethos of taking the classics, like cozy sweats, and making them that much better in terms of fabric, fit and design.

Taylor Stitch men's sweatpants.

With the highly affordable Taylor Stitch Apres Pants, it all starts with better fabric than most sweatpants — in this case, it’s a 100 percent organic cotton double cloth waffle weave. That weave boasts distinctive texture for breezy spring days at home and on the road, and it’s all the better that the Taylor Stitch Apres Pants also come in a Huckberry-exclusive colorway.

Beyond that, they feature elastic jogger cuffs and a comfortable elastic waistband, but the front side slash pockets and button fly are touches that elevate the Taylor Stitch Apres Pants above most loungewear. Even the drawcord strings feature antique brass hardware tips — the ultimate point is, the Taylor Stitch Apres Pants are certainly polished enough to wear out of the office.

And the fact that you can get ’em now for more than 40 percent off (the agreeable price of just $65)? Well, that’s a deal too good to pass up. Add the Taylor Stitch Apres Pants to your laidback spring style rotation now.

Style Pick of the Week: Mott and Bow Benson Jeans – Best Men’s Light Wash Jeans for Spring and Summer

Having menswear picks you can rely on is part of the fun of getting dressed on the daily, if you ask me. In the same way that you find yourself reaching for your favorite pair of leather boots every day, you very well might find yourself opting to rock, say, a classic pair of blue jeans. But in the world of the best men’s jeans, there are some subtle switch-ups you can make as the seasons change, all in the name of comfort, style and dependability.

Naturally, I’m talking about shopping for a pair of the best light wash jeans, a suitably breezy and lightweight style move for spring and summer — and but one way to avoid giving up your love of denim, even in the hotter months. And if you ask this Brooklyn style writer, there’s one brand above all others that delivers the right mix of quality, comfort, sharp looks and agreeable pricing — stop me if you know where this is going, but Mott and Bow can readily offer up some of the best light wash jeans for men.

Best light wash jeans for summer.

The jeans in question in today’s Style Pick of the Week? The Mott and Bow Benson Jeans, a fresh take on the timeless five-pocket blue jean, all done up in a fittingly spring and summer-ready light wash. The Benson Jeans feature the New York City brand’s nicely tailored Slim fit, but it’s the 19-month wash that elevates the Mott and Bow Benson Jeans to another plane in terms of warm weather style.

Best men's light wash jeans.

Another crucial key with Mott and Bow men’s jeans? That comfort, notably the 17 percent stretch factor (and the use of 2 percent elastane in the fabric blend). That means that the Mott and Bow Benson Jeans are supremely comfortable right out of the box, with a light wash that feels super-soft to the touch.

Other style details are taken care of accordingly, from the contrasting copper-colored rivets to the back leather patch for a distinctive branding touch. Your new favorite pair of jeans are also agreeably priced at $129, and available in waist sizes up to 40.

Better still is the fact that the Mott and Bow Benson Jeans are reliably casual, able to be paired up with, for instance, a Mott and Bow men’s T-shirt for expert spring and summer style. Don’t fuss too much over your next denim purchase — make it the Mott and Bow Benson Jeans. Stay stylish, my friends.

The Friday Read: A Weekend on the Road in Minneapolis

Folks, welcome back to another Friday Read, and another dispatch from the road by yours truly. I recently trekked up to Boston with Randolph Engineering, and I’ve also gone upstate in the past few months — and as luck would have it, I’m in hot pursuit of another story this weekend as part of my many freelance writing ventures! I’m in the lovely (and surprisingly warm!) city of Minneapolis this weekend, a trip that’s been in the works for some time now.

The reason for my visit? Among other restaurant and bar excursions in the city — and among my own personal exploration of music heritage in Minneapolis — I’m taking in the revamped, reopened Butcher and the Boar, a Minneapolis institution known for its smoked meats and of course, its extensive whiskey list. If you ask me, those are two of the best things in life, yet the rest of the trip should prove just as stellar (and delicious).

Also on the docket? A cold beer or two at Surly Brewing, plus a visit to the newly opened and much-hyped North Loop restaurant Demi. While I’m no gourmand (and not exactly a stellar cook!), I know what I love when it comes to dining (as I noted when I visited Reyna in NYC), and this trip should certainly fit the bill nicely. It’s a trip I’ve been anticipating for weeks, and it’ll be my first time in the Twin Cities in 9 years, no less!

Of course, I’ll have a full dispatch on the way for Maxim.com sooner rather than later, but you can keep up with all the fun on my Instagram in the meantime. And naturally, we’ll return to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow with my latest Style Pick of the Week. As always, thanks for reading and stay stylish!

The Thursday Buy: This Field Watch from Bespoke Post is An Affordable EDC Upgrade

Best field watch for men to buy this spring.

If you’re anything like me, perhaps you’ve amassed quite the collection of everyday timepieces over the years: Rugged, dependable, versatile, with leather straps or NATO straps… the list goes on in assembling any collection of the best men’s watches.

My own collection includes brands like Shinola, but I’m always on the hunt for the best affordable watches, especially from a trusted retailer. Naturally, that lends itself well to a company like Bespoke Post, which curates one of the best subscription boxes for men — and also stocks plenty of the best men’s gear, including EDC upgrades like the one in front of you today.

And the watch in question today is an astonishing one for the price: It’s the Wren Field Watch, a subtly stylish, reliable and durable watch available right now for under $150. Believe me when I say it packs a ton of bells and whistles into one highly affordable package, the kind you’re not apt to find all that many other places on the market.

Best field watch for men this year.

If per chance you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that I’ve had the chance as of late to test out this rugged field watch, which performs well from coffee shop to concert to bar — and back again, of course. Yes indeed, the Wren Field Watch hits the right specs, from the PVD -coated stainless steel case (clocking in at a slightly larger 44mm case diameter) to the wear-with-anything nylon pass-through strap.

It’s the kind of casually cool watch right at home with your favorite spring shorts and a breezy polo in casual style situations aplenty, but a few touches turn the Wren Field Watch into a watch you can truly wear, well, out into the field. The Wren Field Watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters, so while it’s not a pro diving watch, it can get wet during a day on the water (that nylon strap dries quickly, too).

Plus, the Wren Field Watch boasts luminescent markings and indices, and the coolest touch of all might be the usable rotating compass bezel — how cool is that? Oversized numerals at 12-o’clock and 6-o’clock deliver nice legibility, while the dial has directional markings to help with that compass utility.

It’s worth remembering that you’re getting the Wren Field Watch for under $150, and that’s a heck of a deal when you really dive into it. Pick it up in a flash, then start plotting your next adventure with your new favorite casual watch.
