#OOTD: How to Dress for a Music Festival This Summer

Can you feel it in the air? Yes? No? Maybe you can … hear it? That’s right, summer festival season is upon us, truly now.  And of course, with that comes a crucial question: How to dress for a music festival this summer?  If you already made the pilgrimage to the two-weekend extravaganza that is Coachella, you surely got a taste of what’s to come: Hot weather and crowds filled with far-too-trendy teens. I kid, I kid — we all know there’s excellent music and cold beer to be had, too. Whether you’re gearing up to attend NYC’s Governors Ball this weekend — as I will be — or a festival a bit later in the summer (like Panorama or Bonnaroo), we’ll set you up with simple-yet-stylish gear to take you festival-hopping from stage to stage, all day long. It’s about style that’s ready for anything, namely. Whether there’s rain and a slight breeze or a brutal sun high in the sky, I think the below #OOTD is versatile and comfortable — not to mention ready for a rock concert during the rest of the year. Mixing a classic chambray shirt with slim jeans and comfortable slip-ons — ready for plenty of festivals in the months ahead.

The Shirt: Old Navy Slim-Fit Chambray Shirt in Dark Chambray, $26.94 — While others might be reaching for neon tank-tops or … dare I say … male rompers (yikes), outdo ’em all with a classic — a slim short-sleeve chambray shirt. Hitting the Beach: A Memorial Day Weekend in Florida

As the week dawned rainy and a bit chilly in NYC,  my mind turned immediately toward sunny Florida –I knew I needed a vacation. And that’s just what I got, as I spent these past few days celebrating Memorial Day weekend in style. I always relish the chance to hop a quick flight south to my parents’ adopted home of Fort Myers, that much is true.  Close to pristine beaches and blue water, near to a great craft beer brewery or two, and surrounded by great times, close friends and family and a hearty helping of gourmet home cooking — it’s always a treat! Of course, if you follow me on Instagram, you’re familiar with my visits. And if not? Settle in for a few tips on men’s travel style from my trip. I last trekked down to Florida with my favorite #menswear during a Style Guide spring break visit this past March, and that came not long after I celebrated Christmas in style in Fort Myers. That being said, it never gets old ditching rugged spring outerwear for a bit of much-needed sun! And as always, this trip put my packing mettle to the test.

My last major trip took me to Pittsburgh to see Local Natives — needless to say, conditions were a little bit different (in a great way!), as I hopped a quick flight to Fort Myers. To take on a breezy NYC day and travel thereafter, my Levi’s Trucker Jacket in a seasonally friendly light wash was an easy-to-wear outer layer — and it was just as easy to cram into my trusty Owen and Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender when getting off the plane in Fort Myers. Thanks to my casual office dress code, I was able to sneak in two great pieces from my pals at JACHS NY — the breathable, comfortable Striped Pocket Tee and sharp Red Cropped Stretch Cotton Chinos, featuring a single pleat for modern style. Be on the lookout for similarly easygoing pieces for your next jaunt to a warm-weather locale — and perhaps bring along your own pair of the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, as I did. When teamed up with my rugged-yet-crisp Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch and my reliable Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, the combo worked for the plane ride … and then grabbing a Corona shortly after arrival.

As it so turns out, Friday was a bright, beautiful and sunny day in Florida — the absolute perfect day to hit the beach and kick off a mini-vacation. No matter where your travels take you, you should start the day with men’s grooming essentials — as it were, I styled my ‘do for the day with the clean and sharp Sea Salt Pomade from Brooklyn’s own Fatboy Hair. And on the apparel front: Simple style always starts with the basics — like a stylish Flint and Tinder T-shirt, made in America with marled fabric. It was a classic complement to my new favorite pair of swim trunks, the beach-ready 311 Boardshorts from the excellent Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder collaboration.

And it wouldn’t be a day of exploration without my Legend Sneakers from the fine folks at SeaVees — effortless style finely accented by the durable, handsome and functional MVMT Watches Calypso Watch.  And for kicking back on the beach, I needed a few more items. In this instance, that meant my new Volcom Surf n’ Turf Hybrid Shorts were a comfortable, transitional style move — able to move seamlessly from water to land thanks to quick-drying technology. The tailored fit also nicely complemented my slim, tailored and classic Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in a crisp shade of white. You might recognize the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry — I can vouch that it performed admirably in the heat as I soaked up the sun and sipped a few Coronas.

And the next time you want to inject a bit of continental style into a polo-and-shorts combo, take the Clarks Reazor Drive Loafer in a bright shade of Blue Nubuck — mine proved quite comfortable and very easy to slip on and off. It should come as no surprise that a day of rest and relaxation — along with another backyard BBQ — was in order on Sunday following two busy days in the sun. I still took on the heat in style though, starting with my slim-fitting and uniquely designed United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt. You might recognize this United By Blue summer essential from my Style Pick of the Week series — with a tailored fit, soft fabric and a cool pattern, the Wenlock Chambray Shirt proved a Florida winner. Particularly when matched up with my cotton-linen blend Bridge and Burn Roark Olive Trousers, I stayed quite cool in the sun. Getting around was also made easier thanks once again to my Component sunglasses, mixing vintage inspiration and a modern edge. I was pleased once again with the tough functionality of my Nautica SYD Leather Date Watch, and I injected a bit of dressy detailing into the ensemble with the Sebago Legacy Penny Loafers in a head-turning shade of red leather. Look for similar day-to-night, transitional pieces the next time you’re searching for a full-day, warm-weather outfit.

Monday so far promises a full day of Florida relaxation — and a crucial day off work — before heading back to NYC. I brought more on-point gear to fight off the heat, starting with another Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — the organic cotton  of the Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt is breathable and comfortable. My Ministry of Supply Going Places Shorts also do a fine job at wicking sweat in a tailored silhouette. Of course, my durable and rugged Timex Waterbury Chronograph (in a cool matte black) has so far paired up nicely with my Electric Leadbelly Sunglasses for one last day in the Florida sun.

Looking back on this weekend, it absolutely brought with it everything I had hoped for — relaxing beach time, some much-needed sand and sun (as always), and plenty of meaningful time with family. In the hustle and bustle of New York City (and in the hustle and bustle of planning for these trips!), life can sometimes fly by very quickly, and yet … this weekend was simply the ideal way to kick off summer. I hope you experienced much of the same on your end this weekend. The Friday Read: The xx, Stitch Fix and Menswear Essentials to Own

As I write this edition of the Friday Read, I’m kicking off day two of a much-needed and long-awaited trip to Florida to see my family! I was previously here on a little Style Guide spring break of sorts back in March, but given the Memorial Day weekend holiday, it’s even better to be back. That also begs the question — what are you wearing this weekend? In addition to keeping up with all things menswear, I also had the stunning, nearly unheard-of chance to see British electro-pop rockers The xx play two incredible shows (back-to-back!) last weekend at the lovely, iconic Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. Touring behind one of the year’s best albums — the beautifully crafted “I See You,” they’ve come into their own more than any time before — the result is a poignant, moving and emotional show. In short, go see them on their expanded North American tour! It’s worth a listen as you kick back on Friday evening, absolutely. And with that, I’ll leave you to this week’s #menswear news.

#OOTD: What to Wear to a Weekend Barbecue

You just got word that there’s a barbecue this weekend. Craft beer? Check. Burgers? You got it. But what #menswear to wear to man the grill or just hang out while sipping brews? We’ve got you covered today on The Style Guide — from A-to-Z, this is the place to be. Check your calendars, hurry — it’s Memorial Day weekend comin’ at ya!  And if you’re wondering how to dress for Memorial Day, you’ll like today’s post. It’s the first real full summer weekend, and that’s much-welcomed around these parts. If you missed out on taking a spring road trip or hitting the road for spring break, it’s a chance to get away from town and hopefully enjoy some lovely weather and time with friends & the fam.  I’ll be trekking down to Florida for a  great long weekend with family, and I had the chance to travel to upstate New York for Memorial Day last year — both prime chances to break out some stellar #menswear. So, let’s assume you’ve got gear like a stylish leather weekend bag and a functional dopp kit at the ready — what are you going to wear at your destination? Style Q+A: Designing Your Space with Oxford Pennant

It’s an oft-repeated adage here at The Style Guide — small style upgrades really can make a big difference.  Whether that means stepping up your grooming game or upgrading your casual shirt, there are lots of little areas where the end results are self-evident if you focus on the little steps along the way. Be it looking for a better-fitting shirt or refined suede Chelsea boots, it’s all in the details. That’s particularly true when it comes to areas outside the realm of #menswear — namely, upgrading your home goods or upgrading your office. It really is underrated. Working and living in a pleasing environment surrounded by things you enjoy is one of the small pleasures of life — look at the home of ex-J. Crew menswear head Frank Muytjens. And so, it makes sense that we’re talking upgraded home goods (and an upgraded life!) with the subjects of today’s Style Q+A, the fine folks at Oxford Pennant.

It was after a fine, stylish Sunday brunch (and requisite menswear blogging) that I strolled into one of my favorite Brooklyn menswear shops, the crisply designed and handsomely outfitted Modern Anthology. And what did I happen upon but a cabinet and wall adorned with unique pennants? Hard-to-place, at once masculine and modern, yet vintage. Those pennants, folks, were from Oxford Pennant. That leads us nicely into our latest Q+A, as it were. I’ve been mighty pleased with the pennant I picked up that day, which you might recognize from my Instagram. Hanging on my wall, it serves as a daily reminder to work harder, think forward and push myself — and it looks cool, too. Know that in addition to vintage-inspired pennants, the brand also makes handsome championship banners that add color and instant style to any blank wall. With the spirit of home upgrades in mind, I caught up with  Oxford Pennant co-founder Dave Horesh to talk why you need a pennant (or championship flag) in your home or office, why it looks great, and what you can do to instantly upgrade your space. The Style Guide: What spurred your moment of inspiration to start the brand?
Oxford Pennant: We never set out to start a brand. We’re from Buffalo, which is a city that looks back in time as much as it looks forward. There’s a fixation on the past that’s inescapable here. Brett (my business partner) and I would go to estate sales and pick through huge collections of old pennants from the early 20th century. To us, it always seemed like a piece of Americana that had lost its popularity. One day, we decided to make a batch of “Let’s Go Buffalo” pennants for friends and family. We posted them on Instagram, the photo caught on and people began reaching out to us to have their own pennants made. We filled those orders and folks began posting photos of their custom pennants on Instagram. Then their friends started asking where they could have pennants made, and a company was born.

TSG: A pennant or a flag might not be the first thing a guy thinks of when decorating — what do you think those pieces can add to a space in terms of design?

OP: You know, a flag is something that’s always used as a symbol of pride and identity. Pennants are essentially a small, house-sized flag. I think they’re a pretty clear opportunity for self-expression. We started using the tagline “Celebrate Everything” when it became clear to us that we were making pennants to commemorate the things that bring people joy in their lives. Their hometown, a wedding, a concert or even a feeling. I think pennants are the ultimate souvenir to chronicle and commemorate one’s life.

TSG: For the guy who’s just starting out decorating his space — be it a desk or a dorm room or an apartment — what are some tips you’d share?

    • Start with the classics. Estate sales are a great place to find quality items.
    • A space is always a work in progress. You’ll never be done.
    • Get as many plants as you can. Learn how to take care of them.
    • If you care about something, frame it.
    • Put back the Christmas lights, bro.

OP: I’ll always love our “Let’s Go Buffalo” pennant. I’m proud of my city and that item will always be the first chapter of our story. As we reach company milestones (like attending our first trade show or buying our first piece of equipment), I snap a photo with my “Let’s Go Buffalo” pennant. 
TSG: Just for fun (aside from an Oxford Pennant piece), what’s one style essential every guy should own?
OP: A Vespa.

The Friday Read: Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn, Oars + Alps and LCD Soundsystem

Is it tough to believe we’re kicking off another edition of The Friday Read here at The Style Guide? If your answer is “Yes,” then we’re in the same boat. We’ve had a lot going on here in Brooklyn, from exploring the borough in style to getting you prepped to dress for your next Sunday brunch (we really do love our brunch here, tell ya what), plus busy times at my day job in fashion PR. It’s all fun and games though, and the fun is set to continue this weekend — I’ll be dressed in spring road trip style to head to Indiana to visit my best friend from college, Mr. Stephen Brook.
