And luckily for all of you shoppers out there, we’ve got not only a little bit of time before Mother’s Day (it’s this weekend!), but also plenty of options in this year’s Mother’s Day gift guide. Read this post, and I guarantee you your gift-giving conundrum will be solved. Just as with buying a Christmas or birthday gift, it pays to dig a little deeper, past the ordinary — simple and beautifully made gifts with character are the way to go, no matter the mom you’re buying for. And we’re making it even easier this year, with categories ranging from fashion to jewelry. So with all of that being said, I won’t waste another minute of your time. Unless, that is, you feel like shopping for yourself and perhaps crossing an item off your spring style wish list … in that case, procrastinate away! In the meantime, good luck finding that perfect Mother’s Day gift — tell me how it goes over on Twitter or via The Style Guide Facebook page.

Greats

Jewelry: Julia Szendrei Horizon Diamond Slice Necklace — $99

Julia Szendrei

A simply stylish, understated addition to Mom’s jewelry collection.

You know what’s the great thing about shopping frequently via Huckberry? You get well-acquainted with the fact that they’ve got a neat, unique and well-curated selection of women’s gifts — including the Julia Szendrei Horizon Diamond Slice Necklace.  It provides just the right amount of visual interest, and certainly looks more unique than other necklaces Mom might have in her jewelry rotation. Simple, understated and classic.

Accessories, Part 1: Sofia Ramsey Silver Coco Bracelets — $16

Made with hand-painted coconut wood and bright metal beads, these would be a unique, thoughtful gift.

Less a statement piece of jewelry and more a thoughtful accessory, these Sofia Ramsey bracelets blend a spring and summer-friendly color with carefully constructed quality and the type of chic looks that the mom — or moms — on your gifting list might appreciate. Perhaps even better than the eclectic style of these bracelets? Supporting two local businesses in the process (one of ’em being my favorite Brooklyn shop, Upstate Stock!). Plus, you can combine this gift with a little more personal touch — thoughtful flowers, a nice candle or a great book. Speaking of books …

The Combination Gift: Elizabeth W. Aromatherapy Candle — $23.98 AND a Great Book [“Days Without End” by Sebastian Barry, $26 on IndieBound.com]

The unbeatable combo of a great book and a nice candle.

What better way to welcome spring and summer than with an intriguing beach read? If you’ve got a book lover on your list, they very well might appreciate “Days Without End,” a richly crafted, fascinating tale of immigration, the old American West and in short, a momentous time in American history. It’s got a lot of buzz behind it, and it’s certainly among the best books for Mother’s Day (I think). It should be a gripping read — and that’s where the relaxing Lavender Aromatherapy Candle comes into play. See, two great gifts and an easy one-two punch.

Clothing: Taylor Stitch Catherine Buttondown — $118

Taylor Stitch Women's Apparel

A simple, well-made buttondown — match with your gift receipient if you wish!

Lest you thought Taylor Stitch only made your favorite clothing, think again. They make a nice selection of finely textured, well-made and understated pieces for the woman who values effortless style. Whoever that might be on your list, a premium shirt like the Taylor Stitch Catherine Buttondown could be a nice complement to something like a day of pampering or her favorite flowers — see, it’s the little things that count. And seeing as Taylor Stitch has thought of all the details possible with its Catherine Shirt, that’s great news as you shop for Mother’s Day.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

Footwear: Nisolo Sofia Slip-on — $188

Nisolo

A clean, well-made slip-on perfect for the mom who loves — I mean, LOVES — shoes.

Just as with Taylor Stitch, Nisolo does far more than make stylish gear for guys (like the Emilio Chukka Boot). Indeed, the Sofia Slip-on is yet another unique, refined and understated pair of footwear to consider buying for the mom who considers herself a fashionista. And regardless of her footwear tastes, a chic pair of leather slip-ons should work reliably well through the warmer months — so while you buy the Nisolo Leon Weekender for yourself, buy the Sofia Slip-on for her, will ya?

Sutro Shoes Inc.

Accessories, Part 2: Bellroy Carry Out Clutch — $168.98

Bellroy

For the mom who appreciates refined, essential accessories — here’s the gift to give.

Who doesn’t appreciate a great addition to their everyday carry  — right? While Mom’s daily carry might look a bit different than yours — I’d wager she doesn’t carry around a small pocket knife, for example — there are still additions to be made. And one of those additions should likely be the Bellroy Carry Out Clutch, a subtly stylish clutch that should be easy to slip into a tote bag or carry on its own. Hey, maybe check out some other Bellroy leather goods for yourself? You know, as a reward for your shopping prowess.

And with that … we’ve reached the end of this year’s Mother’s Day gift guide. Was it helpful? Useful? Or was it a complete waste of time and you’re still scrambling to find a gift? In that case … I do apologize. But if you found a simple, timeless and classic gift to give — like the Bellroy Carry Out Clutch or the Sofia Slip-on — that’s what we’re going for! Indeed, it all comes down to playing toward Mom’s tastes and interests; in that case, something more unexpected, yet well-made — like the Taylor Stitch Catherine Buttondown — could be a prime gift to give. Don’t forget small touches, like an engaging book or a nice candle. So, what do you say? Let me know what you’re buying for Mother’s Day this year in the comments below.

Good luck, stay stylish and thank you for reading — as always!

Style Pick of the Week: Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit

Oars + Alps

Grooming essentials from Oars + Alps paired with weekend essentials — the Owen and Fred Brass Bottle Opener and Graft Lantz 1951 Traveller Bag among them.

We’ve  talked quite often in our Style Pick of the Week series about men’s style essentials you need to have on-hand in your closet — be it a  lightweight nylon jacket or versatile spring sneakers. But what about your … medicine cabinet?  Effective men’s grooming products tend to be an area most of us guys overlook — it can be an overwhelming field to dive into, what with a plethora of options and brands big and small out there. Yes indeed, keeping it simple can sometimes pay off. In that vein, the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit is simplicity defined for the guy who wants to upgrade his grooming game quickly and easily. Available via the brand’s Web site and the fine folks at Huckberry, it’s a quick and easy-to-use set of just three basics that you need now. While we’ve talked about the best men’s grooming products for winter, it’s just as important to keep your skin in shape during the spring and summer. And the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit is certainly made for the guy on the go, whether you fancy yourself an athlete or not. The kit features the crisply scented, effective Active Armor Deodorant, a 2-in-1 face moisturizer and eye cream — use a lighter amount under the eyes, a thicker amount on the face — and the unique Power Cleansing Face Stick. With that versatility in mind, there’s a great chance the Athlete’s Grooming Kit could be the most essential grooming move you make this season. Having had the chance to test out the line recently courtesy of the brand, I can certainly vouch for that — in fact, it might be among the best men’s grooming products for spring and summer.

Beckett Simonon

The full line-up from Oars + Alps — possibly your new favorite set of grooming essentials.

At first glance, the Power Cleansing Face Stick seems a bit different — you rub the stick on your face (avoiding your eyes), and then rub the solution into your skin with wet hands. Sound odd? Maybe a little — but once you realize that the Cleansing Face Stick leaves your skin feeling refreshed and smooth, it’s easy to use. And the combination of face moisturizer and eye cream eliminates an extra step in the grooming process while hydrating your skin. Again, refreshing and smooth skin isn’t something you should let go in the spring and summer. And the Active Armor Deodorant proves that the Athlete’s Grooming Kit really is an excellent all-around grooming routine, what with its effective performance and crisp scent. While you might have the rest of your spring style essentials covered, the Athlete’s Grooming Kit can absolutely take care of your grooming needs all spring and summer long. The fact that the you can pick up the Athlete’s Grooming Kit for a low price is just an added bonus. And it’s a crucial reminder that even if you think you have everything covered, it’s best to go the extra mile with grooming essentials. If you’ve got more questions on the Athlete’s Grooming Kit, just drop me a line via Twitter.

Stay stylish!

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Men’s Messenger Bags to Buy Now

As we always say at The Style Guide, it pays to do your homework when it comes to style upgrades — especially if that homework involves sifting through our Online Shopping Picks series.  From stylish dress shoes to the best men’s grooming products, we’ve covered a lot of ground on the blog — yet, today’s entry will be the first-ever attempt at chronicling the best men’s messenger bags. Yes indeed, we’re in this together today. A messenger bag is a sort of secret style weapon for the guy who prefers casual style yet still wants to look sharp. Although brands are indeed making stylish leather backpacks — the Jack + Mulligan Welles Backpack comes to mind — there’s still something that’s a bit too youthful about a backpack. However, a luxurious briefcase, no matter how nice, also might not work — it could be too dressy or hard to lug around (only pesky handles to hold). So, where do you go? I give you … the humble messenger bag. Still a favorite of actual bike messengers here in New York City, there are some durable, handsome and casually stylish options out there — and we’ll show you just the ones to buy today.  Pack it up and bring your favorite messenger bag on a spring road trip or fill it with everyday carry essentials on the go. Join in on the fun, shop away and leave any comments for me below or on Twitter, where I tweet about as much #menswear as I can. Enjoy!

#1. Joshu + Vela Zip Briefcase — $234.98

Joshu + Vela

A durable, rugged and gear-friendly zip briefcase — a messenger bag, in my book.

OK, so is the Joshu + Vela Zip Briefcase a briefcase, or a messenger bag? Traditional convention might dictate that a messenger bag fold over the top but hey … we’re not too picky over here. Either way, the durable, handsome and rugged Zip Briefcase is definitely an upgrade over your current backpack situation. Thick canvas and a beautiful bridle leather strap are made to age well and stand up to adventures aplenty, and this particular bag can house a 15-inch MacBook — pretty versatile and durable, ehh?

Sutro Shoes Inc.

An easy-to-carry, easy-to-use leather messenger bag from a great Michigan company.

The makers of the 810 Wallet also do a heck of a nice messenger bag. A personal favorite of yours truly, the Roma Messenger has accompanied me on adventures around Brooklyn and a winter trip back to Michigan, handling each trip with grace and great looks. It’s a surprisingly lightweight, unlined leather messenger bag — designed in the state of Michigan itself, my bag has aged quite well and held up more than alright through a long commute and a frigid New York winter. If you value quality and crisp style, the Roma Messenger is your bag.

Florsheim

Peak Design

The most popular camera bag in the history of Kickstarter — and a heck of a worthy messenger bag purchase.

If you value functional design that considers every detail, consider making the Peak Design Everyday Messenger your next messenger bag purchase. It really does have so much going for it — from the lifetime warranty to the whopping $4.7 million it raised on its initial Kickstarter funding run, the Peak Design Everyday Messenger is unlike any bag you’ve ever bought — from the waterproof waxed shell and seatbelt-style straps to the removable dividers and space for a full-frame DSLR, it’s got the goods to carry, well, your goods. Again, you might want to look into the Peak Design Everyday Messenger.
Filson Original Briefcase

One of the more recognizable everyday bags on the market — and a heck of an option for you to buy right now.

Yet another briefcase that’s not quite your traditional briefcase by any means, the Filson Original Briefcase  is an instantly recognizable heritage classic known and used the world over. It’s a favorite of a lot of guys here in New York City (and elsewhere) for its water-repellent exterior, handy two-way zipper and a  plethora of interior and exterior pockets. The USA-made construction is legendary — you’ll have this briefcase for years to come, seriously.
Owen and Fred

Yet another terrific upgrade to your daily carry.

Are you sick of reading about bags that are not quite technically messenger bags? Well, fear not — we’re almost done here. Owen and Fred really lives up to the brand’s motto — “men’s goods made great” — and from its Voyager Waxed Weekender to smaller pieces like the brand’s essential brass bottle opener, you need to get Owen and Fred on your radar. The brand’s Flight Brief, made out of stylish midnight waxed canvas and finished with handsome leather accents, is a terrific bag for work or play.
Hopefully, you’ve now filled up your shopping cart with a new everyday bag — ehh? While a piece like the Joshu + Vela Zip Briefcase defies the traditional conventions of a messenger bag, it’s a handsome, durable and reliably stylish upgrade to your everyday carry. And the sleek silhouette and clean lines of the Owen and Fred Flight Brief also make it a worthy addition to this list. In terms of classic, rugged appeal, it’s very tough to top the Filson Original Briefcase  — and you’d do well to pick that one up, of course. For the more functionally minded guy, the Peak Design Everyday Messenger fits the bill more than nicely. Last but not least, the Michigan-designed Brothers Leather Supply Roma Messenger could be your new favorite everyday bag. With that being said — are you ready for your next commute or road trip? See you out there.

#OOTD: How to Upgrade Your Pocket Tee This Spring

Morning (or afternoon … or evening), folks! Thanks for being with us as we talk how to upgrade your pocket tee this spring. In the men’s style world, never underestimate the importance and utility of a great-fitting T-shirt — especially one that you can wear in a way that’s slightly different from other spring style moves. Once you figure what size works for you, you can use said T-shirt to take on the world in style — particularly as the thermostat climbs. And if you want to switch up your T-shirt game, take a good, hard look at the humble pocket tee. Unlike a standard white tee, it’s got more going for it in terms of versatility and visually interesting looks — the chest pocket draws attention to, well, your chest, for starters. It’s the small details that make a stylish pocket tee suitable to wear on its own or layered up — as you’ll see in today’s #OOTD. We’re mixing a bit of a mononchromatic color palette with a statement-making tee, classic spring sneakers and all of the stylish everyday carry pieces you can get your hands on. It’s the sort of #OOTD you can reliably wear on a weekend coffee date or a spring bar crawl …. or both. What’d ya say? Let’s go to it. For style inspiration all 365 days of the year, follow along on Instagram.

Richer Poorer

A unique take on the pocket tee, accented with classic, spring-friendly style essentials.

The Pocket Tee: Richer Poorer Crew Pocket Tee in Pink, $32 — Think pink isn’t a color that’s made for you? Think again. We’re seeing a lot more of this dusty pink shade across menswear and women’s style, and using it as your base is a significant style upgrade.

The Shirt: Abercrombie and Fitch Two-Pocket Chambray Shirt, $35 — Why are we layering up our pocket tee with a stylish chambray shirt? For one, it’ll help combat any spring and summer breezes. And, number two: If you’re wary of the pink T-shirt, it takes some of the focus of it. Plus, a chambray shirt is a rugged essential for the entire year.

The Denim: Abercombie and Fitch Super Skinny Denim in Light Wash, $59 — Here’s where that monochromatic style we talked about earlier comes into play. This pair of stretch denim blends retro style with comfort — feel free to wear them to your next rock concert, too.
Greats

The Sneakers: SeaVees Hermosa Regatta Sneaker, $88 — We here at The Style Guide absolutely love what’s being done by SeaVees across the board — the Hermosa Regatta Sneaker blends a unique spring color with a light weight and quite a lot of comfort and style.

The Socks: Darn Tough No Show Ultra-Light Cushion Socks, $29.98  — If you’re going to break out classic SeaVees sneakers, some no-show socks are in order — yes? Darn Tough makes some of the best around. Pricey, but comfortable and much-needed.

The Watch: Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch, $498.98 — We’ve waxed poetic about the durability and style of the rugged Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch, and its simple design makes it ideal for pairing with laidback pieces.

The Sunglasses: Sunski Madronas Sunglasses, $55 — Every so often, you want shades that are simple, stylish and affordable — that’s where the Sunski Madronas sunglasses come in very handy indeed. Yes indeed, these are definitely worth adding to any list of the best men’s sunglasses.

The Ballcap: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, $39.98 — To keep the sun off your face during interminable hours sipping patio beers, reach for the vintage-inspired, well-made Huckberry Explorer’s Cap.

Beckett Simonon

Looking through the above #OOTD has me positively dreaming of cracking open a cold one on a patio somewhere — hopefully, you’re in the same boat. The key to this outfit revolves around the unexpected pink shade of the pocket tee, plus visually interesting layering via a classic light chambray shirt and slim light wash denim. Of course, it wouldn’t be an #OOTD without stylish spring sneakers — that’s where the Hermosa Regatta Sneaker has you covered.  And in that regard, you’re going to need a tough casual watch to take on spring excursions — that’s what the Huckberry Combat B33 GMT Watch can do for ya. And it’s with two personal favorites of mine that we close out this outfit — there might not be a more stylish ballcap out there than the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap, and for classic, functional spring style, it’s tough to get better than those Sunski Madronas shades. Would you wear your pocket tee in a similar fashion? Leave any feedback over on The Style Guide Facebook page, and join us tomorrow for a new Online Shopping Picks entry.

Stay stylish, my friends!

Style Suggestion: The Most Stylish Gear for Spring Rain

If you’ve had the good fortune of avoiding rainy spring weather so far, good for you. If not, well … join the club. Today, we’ll get you all geared up for the gear to wear on a rainy spring day (and really, any time you need to look polished, casual and cool this season). It can be a struggle to dress technically and practically, yet still look good — that much is true. Those colorful, thin ponchos might do the trick at an amusement park, but your Style Guide author thinks we can (and should) strive to do better when it comes to dressing for the rain. Certainly, you need a stylish spring jacket — and then a heck of a lot more great pieces. So today, we’ll take you through a handy, down-to-the-details guide — as we do on every style suggestion — and hopefully, you’ll be better off for it. We’ve got picks from site favorites like Huckberry, we’ve got gear from brands like Grayers, and we’re gonna have some fun while we’re at it. Now, there’s no silver bullet when it comes to taking on the rain in style, but I’d wager you’ll like what we’ve got in store. Without any more bluster … here’s today’s style suggestion. Enjoy — and if you must, give me some grief about the below #menswear ensemble on Twitter.
Frank & Oak

The Jacket: Penfield Barnes Jacket — $124.98

A neutral, functional and well-made jacket that’s also affordably priced.

Leave it to Penfield to deliver a high-quality, functional and durable jacket that looks more stylish than your average rain slicker. It’s weatherproof and constructed from treated nylon taslan, which should hold its shape through the rain and any spring travels you’ve got planned. The stowaway hood on the Barnes Jacket adds another level of hidden functionality, and the mesh lining should provide nice breathability. Did I mention the Olive color is neutral and ideal for spring?

A new take on the Oxford-style shirt, made with two layers of lightweight fabric woven together.

As first seen in this site’s #OOTD on how to wear your new favorite chinos for spring, the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt is worth incorporating into this outfit for several reasons. Grayers uses exceptionally high-quality fabric, in this instance two lightweight layers woven together. And that gives you a seriously wearable, updated take on the Oxford style — the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt certainly adds some polish to the more technical raincoat.
Flint and Tinder

American-grown cotton and a slubby texture make this henley ideal for spring layering.

Because life’s too short to not wear quality goods, we’re recommending you layer up with an all-new essential — the Flint and Tinder Slub Henley. A well-made henley is a four-season style essential at this point, and it’s a nice layering move here for a few reasons. Namely, it adds some visual interest underneath the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt, and it provides some added protection from chilly spring rain and wind. And if the Pewter color shown above isn’t your thing, know that it’s available in two different shades.

Beckett Simonon

The Denim: Abercombie and Fitch Super Skinny Denim in Light Wash — $59

Abercrombie and Fitch

Slim denim in a refreshingly light shade, made with a hint of stretch.

Just as I recommended you mix khaki and olive in an earlier spring style ensemble, I’m recommending mixing a light blue Grayers shirt with an even lighter shade of essential spring denim.  Abercrombie and Fitch should be a brand you add to your shopping list, if only because they make fine goods at great prices — the denim shown here is no exception, crafted with a hint of stretch and a wash that absolutely needs to be worn on a summer road trip … or a rainy day.
Florsheim

The Sneakers: SeaVees Mariner Boot — $178

SeaVees

Tough, supremely stylish and rain-ready — that’s what you’re getting here, folks.

I’ve sung the praises of the SeaVees Mariner Boot in weeks past on The Style Guide, from a Style Pick of the Week entry to a feature on the best transitional footwear for spring — and I’m not about to stop singing now. Made with sturdy British Ventile waterproof duck cotton crafted into a cool high-top sneaker upper, these boots are sturdy, durable and crisp enough to wear to the office with a lightweight navy blazer and perhaps the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt.
Greats
The Socks: CHUP Prairie Socks — $35

CHUP socks

A unique pattern and quality construction help these socks inject some life into this ensemble.

In a rainy day style ensemble filled with crisp neutrals like tan, olive and navy blue, it’s perfectly OK to work in a little bit of pattern — especially if that means you get to wear some well-made CHUP socks. They’re certainly pricey — that’s why I’m only recommending you buy one pair — but that means they’ll provide nice breathability and comfort beneath your SeaVees Mariner Boots.

The Belt: Abercrombie and Fitch Braided Twill Belt — $28

Abercrombie and Fitch

Nothing fancy about this belt — just much-needed texture and casual style.

Because spring is as good a time as any to go for lighter textures and fabrics, that means it’s as good a time as any to pick up a braided belt for a nice value. And folks, that means we’re once again recommending you turn to Abercrombie and Fitch. It’s the little details that make for nice style upgrades, and even in the rain, it can be a solid move to work in some texture and visual interest via a highly wearable belt.

The Watch: Aulta Acuatico Automatic — $240

Aulta Watches

Plenty of water resistance and a handy rubber strap to combat the rain.

As much as it pains me to say it, sadly, the rain is no time to break out your favorite leather watch. No, precipitation and strong winds call for something sturdier and tougher — but still just as stylish.  Enter the Aulta Acuatico Automatic, a premium, rugged and crisp-yet-casual timepiece built to handle a little rain. Yes indeed, from the nicely sized 41mm case diameter to the accurate Miyota movement and 200 meters worth of water resistance, the Aulta Acuatico Automatic should be a go-to watch when the rain starts coming down.
Sutro Footwear

The Hat: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap — $39.98

Huckberry Explorer's Cap

Stylish, well-made and easygoing — everything you could ask for in a nice ballcap.

Last but not least — even with a protective layer like the Penfield Barnes Jacket, a handy ballcap such as the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap can actually go a long way in protecting you from a blustery storm. Delivered by the good folks at Huckberry  (who’d thunk that?), the Explorer’s Cap finishes off this outfit in a bit of throwback fashion. Complete with a cool design and stylish retro looks, it’s a subtly stylish ballcap that’s a definite style upgrade from an athletic logo cap.

Nautica

If you’re not ready to take on spring rains after perusing that blog post … I don’t know what to tell ya, folks! If you start with a durable and well-made jacket — like the Penfield Barnes Jacket — you’re putting yourself in position to take on inclement weather in style, for sure. And when you start with a breathable, rugged base layer like the Flint and Tinder Slub Henley, your ensemble is only going to get better. Adding on everyday essentials — from the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt to a slim pair of Abercrombie and Fitch stretch denim — helps keep this outfit fresh, crisp and classic. And no outfit is complete with premium transitional footwear; namely, the SeaVees Mariner Boot  is going to help you put in a lot of miles despite the rain.  Lest you had any doubts on the feasibility of your watch game in a thunderstorm, the Aulta Acuatico Automatic is the way to go. As always, I hope these tips were helpful  — let me know via the Style Guide Facebook page how you’re suiting up to take on spring rain. We’ll see you tomorrow for our next #OOTD!

Stay stylish,

Style Pick of the Week: Flint and Tinder Slub Henley

First off: Happy Saturday, folks! And welcome to this week’s Style Pick of the Week.  With spring style transitions fully underway, it’s high time we layered up accordingly — right? And if you follow this blog on the regular, you’ll recognize that the right way to layer up in style this spring likely starts with gear from Flint and Tinder — true, yes? That’s definitely the case with today’s Style Pick, the essential, rugged and brand-new Flint and Tinder Slub Henley. Here at The Style Guide, we (and by we, I mean myself) love the brand for its blend of American-made quality, rugged style and classic looks. From the Flint and Tinder Texas Moleskin Shirt to more casual pieces like the brand’s Garment-Dyed Sweatpants, they’re tough to beat in terms of wearability and great looks across the board.  And that’s why we’re going to bat today for the Flint and Tinder Slub Henley. This piece gets quite a lot right in terms of essential spring style, from the unique Pewter color — ideal for a monochromatic pairing with slim stone chinos — to the textured slub fabric that would nicely offset stylish suede Chelsea boots and light wash denim. Yes, it certainly is a nice addition to the Flint and Tinder marled henley collection — trust me on that one.  Maybe if you’ve got a closet full of rugged men’s henleys — as I do — you might question the merit of adding another one. And yet … I’d say you should give it a closer look.

Beckett Simonon

Flint and Tinder

Lightweight, garment-dyed cotton and a vintage-style collar — just what you need in a spring henley!

The Flint and Tinder Slub Henley has some unique styling details going for it in addition to the garment-dyed fabric and spring-friendly colorway. The three-button collar on the Flint and Tinder Slub Henley calls to mind a band-collar shirt — and of course, a band-collar shirt might just be the one shirt to add to your closet this season. It’s a slightly vintage look that would fit right in with dark blue selvedge denim and your favorite pair of worn-in leather boots.  And the good news is, the lightweight American cotton construction of the Flint and Tinder Slub Henley should provide some leeway in terms of spring layering — for example, a lightwash denim jacket and perhaps the famous Flint and Tinder 365 Pant could make for a nice weekend ensemble.

On the other hand, you could easily slide it under a stylish chambray shirt for a spring bar crawl,  or pair it with a tough spring jacket — say, a field coat — for on-the-go wearability. And like other Flint and Tinder gear, you’re getting an agreeable price for truly excellent quality — $58 isn’t the worst price in the world for a piece that can be mixed and matched with a  lightweight navy blazer or a slim leather moto jacket in equal measure. Again, it’s tough to top Flint and Tinder gear across the board — let me know via the comments if you’re picking one up, or drop me a line on Twitter if you’ve got questions on how to style it. All good? All good.

Cheers and thanks for reading!

Online Shopping Picks: Stylish Men’s Dress Shoes to Shop Now

As I clicked back through The Style Guide archives to prep for this post, I realized it had been far too long since we’d covered stylish men’s dress shoes on the blog. Like, nearly two years too long! A lot can happen in two years, folks. Of course, what can also happen in two years? Nothing at all. As in — if you buy an investment-worthy pair of men’s dress shoes from the below list,  you’ll be able to wear that pair frequently, day after day, with no need to trade ’em for a new pair. That’s the beauty of buying quality and paying a bit more, as you’ll see from the below list. We aimed for a mix of versatility and utility throughout the seasons — whether you’re suiting up for winter or dressed in classic spring style, the below picks should cover you for situations where you need to look sharp and feel comfortable. And with situations like spring and summer weddings come up, a dress shoe refresh could be in order. There’s certainly a lot of  technical minutiae when it comes to different types of men’s dress shoes . From the functional roots of wingtip brogues (the brogue detailing was meant to provide breathability in the rain) to the durable nature of a dress chukka boot, there’s a lot of ground to cover (pun intended). However, we’re going to focus on the basics: Shoes that look great with everything from a suit to chinos and a blazer, and perform just as well as you’d expect. If you’ve got additions to the list or thoughts, tweet at me incessantly on Twitter or leave a comment below. Happy shopping!

#1. Allen Edmonds Liverpool Chelsea Suede Boots — $445

The versatile and refined dress boot you didn’t know you needed.

Can suede Chelsea boots serve the same purpose as classic dress shoes? They certainly can, and I’m here to tell you why. Coming from the craftsmen at Allen Edmonds — who certainly know a thing or two about handsome footwear — the suede Chelsea boot becomes something more than an of-the-moment pair of footwear.  Built on the refined 943B last, this is a pair of dress boots as crisp as any on the market, made with high-quality brown suede, Goodyear welt construction and versatile looks (I wore mine with light wash denim and a navy blazer recently, for reference).

#2. Grant Stone Long Wing in British Tan Calf — $334.95

Huckberry

Striking dress shoes made to break in over time — beautifully done by Grant Stone.

We mentioned before that we’d dive into some investment-level dress shoe options, right? Well, here’s one for you — feast your eyes on the stunning, stylish and pricey Grant Stone Long Wing in British Tan Calf. These shoes definitely have a lot going for them — from the striking British Tan color to the eye-catching long wing detailing and a refined silhouette, it’s about as good as it gets. The Grant Stone Long Wing is made with a Goodyear welt and also designed to mold to your foot over time. The more you wear the Grant Stone Long Wing, the better they get.

#3. Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Cap Toe Oxfords —  $395

Allen Edmonds

It’s hard to beat classic brown leather cap toe Oxfords from Allen Edmonds.

For absolutely beautiful footwear that’s made with the utmost attention to care, look toward Allen Edmonds. The Park Avenue Cap Toe Oxford is, simply put, a heck of a dress shoe. Available in shades ranging from crisp black (suitable enough for the most formal occasions) to an intriguing navy leather, the classic shade of brown seen above is a safe bet to become your new go-to dress shoe. Minimal enough to wear with a suit and still able to work with dark blue denim and a V-neck sweater, they’re certainly worth the investment.

#4. Ankari Floruss Brogue Derby in Black — $182.98

Ankari Floruss

A classic black long wing that works for business casual and ultra-formal situations.

If you’re quick on the uptake, you might notice that we hadn’t featured any black leather dress shoes to this point — that’s changing with these fine brogue derbies from Ankari Floruss.  A recent addition to the men’s E-commerce game, Ankari Floruss is the work of noted menswear bloggers Moti Ankari and Marcel Floruss. Give them both a follow — these are some stylish fellas who know how to put together an outfit. And  they can do footwear, too — with the Brogue Derby, you’re getting style that’s sharp as a razor and ready to be worn with your favorite navy or charcoal suit.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

#5. Sebago Heritage Tassel Loafers — $115

Sebago

A prep staple that can be dressed up in the warmer months? Not too good to be true.

We’re continuing to buck the mold of traditional dress shoes here by recommending stylish leather loafers. Try wearing them just as you would brown leather wingtips — that is to say, with essential business casual favorites like slim khaki chinos and a navy blazer. In the spring and summer, they’re a way to keep your feet cool while still looking crisp and tailored. And coming from Sebago, you get a great price and excellent quality — I took the Heritage Tassel Loafers on an upstate Memorial Day trip last year and was mighty pleased. Shop away!
Honorable Mention: Nisolo Emilio Chukka Boot in Noir — $169.98
Nisolo Emilio Chukka Boot

A chukka boot that can be dressed up or down.

Thanks for sticking with us until the end — but we’re not done yet! Perhaps you prefer style that’s a bit more rugged — yet still able to be dressed up. Your Style Guide author is right there with you, hence the inclusion of the tough, well-made and uniquely stylish Nisolo Emilio Chukka Boot. Granted, the Emilio Chukka Boot is a classic open-lace chukka boot, which is naturally more casual in nature. However, the silhouette is sleek enough that you could easily wear it with stylish light wash denim or slim chinos and a classic blazer — not to mention a winter-friendly suit later on this year.
That’ll do it for this week’s Online Shopping Picks entry. With any luck, you’re well on your way to snapping up some new dress shoes. In addition to classic, timeless picks like a well-designed Oxford, it pays to consider more unique options like the Allen Edmonds Liverpool Chelsea Boot. Beautiful, classic dress shoes like the Grant Stone Long Wing are just as worthy of your time and hard-earned dollars, and you could do worse than buying a pair of sleek black dress shoes like the Ankari Floruss Brogue Derby.  Keep in mind that beautifully made dress shoes should give you plenty of wearability, too — with the right mindset, investment-worthy dress shoes can work with dark denim and a casual navy blazer just as easily as with a light grey suit. The first step is just buying the right ones.
Enjoy the quest for your perfect pair dress shoes,

#OOTD: The Best Way To Upgrade Your Casual Shirt This Spring

Here at The Style Guide, I always say it pays to focus on the little style upgrades we should all be making daily.  Whether that’s starting with the basics — like investing in a pair of classic dark denim — or going a step further (like dialing in the exact fit of your favorite chambray shirt), there are certainly quite a few #menswear details to consider on the daily. And perhaps one of the more overlooked pieces of a guy’s wardrobe could be casual shirting. It’s fair to say that if you’re dressing in tailored office style during the week, there’s not a lot of room to wear more laidback garb.  So, it’s certainly easy to overlook shirting that can be worn for off-duty occasions. From a spring bar crawl to Sunday brunch, that’s where the below tips are going to come in handy. Luckily for you, there’s one brand in particular that’s merging a reliable fit with classic styling potential and hey, a dash of helpful technology — the Tech Prep Chambray Shirt from GANT is geared to wick away moisture and manage temperature while looking great. Didn’t think a casual shirt could do that, did ya? See how to style it via the below #OOTD, and get more casual style inspiration via my Instagram. Happy spring!

Upgrading your casual shirt with a focus on performance and style.

The Shirt: GANT Tech Prep Chambray Shirt, $125 — As mentioned before, this shirt checks the boxes in terms of performance and style, what with a rich four-season color, a slim fit and moisture-wicking capability.

The Jacket: La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond, $275 — Another underrated spring style upgrade — a cotton bomber jacket featuring a modern fit and quality construction. The La Paz Ortigao Bomber is a surefire winner, folks.

The Chinos: Taylor Stitch Democratic Chino in Army, $98 — Because we’re all about showing you how to wear your new favorite chinos this spring, let’s add the Taylor Stitch Democratic Chino to your shopping list, ehh? High-quality fabric, an outstanding army green color and a fit that’s pleasingly modern, yet not restrictive.

Frank & Oak

The Chukka Boots: Astorflex Greenflex in Dark Khaki, $129.98 — Who can resist a pair of stylish chukka boots from our pals at Huckberry? If you don’t know Astorflex, get on it — the Greenflex in Dark Khaki is made sustainably with comfort in mind.

The Belt: J. Crew Factory Washed Leather Belt, $24.50 — Simple, affordable and wearable with gear ranging from a slim pocket tee and olive cargos to stone chinos and a lightweight navy blazer, you can’t go wrong with this belt.

Beckett Simonon

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch, $185 — Equal parts rugged and dressy, the Aviator 3-Hand Watch is the sort of watch you could wear 7 days a week, with everything from a marled henley to a classic blue Oxford and knit tie.
Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Socks: Richer Poorer Tyrell Socks, $12 — I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — small style details matter, and neutral-colored socks with a dash of pattern are one way to get it right.

The Everyday Necessity: Nisolo Lori Leather Tote, $134.98 — If you tend to think more of a messenger bag when compiling your everyday carry, consider a humble — yet handsomely appointed — Nisolo tote bag instead. Specifically, the Nisolo Lori Leather Tote. It’s more unique than a messenger and just as well-suited for casual spring style.

If at first glance the above outfit doesn’t blow you away with crazy-loud colors or styling touches, that’s … probably a good thing. After all, sometimes, the best #OOTD looks are ones that are crisp, done simply and tailored nicely. Such is the case with the breathable and stylish GANT Tech Prep Chambray Shirt, a great upgrade to your casual shirting game if ever there was one. Unique outerwear like the La Paz Ortigao Bomber could change your seasonal layering game altogether, particularly given its cool color and great fit. Olive chinos from the likes of Taylor Stitch are as surefire a bet as any, and classic suede chukka boots are yet another ideal spring style move. No matter the season, keep in mind that you can wear a tough Jack Mason watch with nearly any outfit — and rest assured that your gear is going to be safe and sound with the Nisolo Lori Leather Tote.

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for A Spring Road Trip

Are you packed up for your next spring road trip? Or perhaps, your first of the season? If you’re still struggling with what to bring in your stylish weekender bag, your hard-working Style Guide team of one can help you with that today. Much like dressing for winter travel, gearing up for a day in transit — be it by plane, train or automobile — requires you to meet a few different style scenarios. You could be migrating from temperate, breezy conditions to sweltering heat, as I did on a spring road trip to Florida, or you could be going from a dressy day at the office to a casual vacation.  Either way, packing and traveling with versatility and crisp-yet-casual style in mind can only help you in the long run. So, the focus is on layering, solid fits, mobile fabrics and just a few spring style classics. Think you can handle all that? Hope so — and if you want to see a certain topic covered in this series, leave me a comment in my virtual suggestion box … on Twitter. OK, gear up and hit the road!

The Weekender Bag: Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut — $397

Nisolo Leon Weekender

A beautiful mix of durable leather and excellent style.

As previously covered in our Style Pick of the Week series, there’s really no way you can go wrong with the handsome, supremely stylish and tough Nisolo Leon Weekender in Chestnut. Done up in rich brown leather and lined with tan cotton canvas, the Leon Weekender is a refined blend of style and functionality, and it’ll look just as great in any Instagram travel shots as it will sitting in your trunk or overhead compartment. Think of the Nisolo Leon Weekender as an investment in great taste, great looks and great adventures.

The Bomber Jacket: La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond — $275

La Paz Ortigao Bomber

A unique shade of … well, almond, done up in a classic cotton bomber jacket.

We all need some stylish spring outerwear in our lives, right? That’s what you’re getting with the versatile, casual and well-made La Paz Ortigao Bomber in Almond. This 100 percent cotton bomber — featuring raglan sleeves to broaden your frame visually — is made in Portugal, hence the higher price tag. And lest you be wary of the Almond color, think of the lighter cream/off-white shade of the La Paz Bomber as being similar to a foray into white denim — a move that when done right, looks great. I have a sneaky feeling you’ll like the rest of the #menswear ensemble we pair it with, too.
Flint and Tinder

A classic navy polo, made with comfort and care from a solid brand.

The Style Guide editorial team — of one — sure does love Flint and Tinder. From rugged fall and winter outerwear like the Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket to seasonal staples like the Flint and Tinder Moleskin Shirt and even the brand’s Garment-Dyed Sweatpants, they make something for every occasion and preference. And now, my fine gentlemen (and ladies!), I offer up the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Made with a tailored fit and in an essential color like navy, it’s a comfortable, breathable layering piece that does just fine sans jacket, too.

The Pants: Iron and Resin Drifter Pant in Graphite — $50

Iron and Resin

The comfort of a drawstring waistband with the tailored look of chinos.

The vibe of this outfit so far screams comfortable, casual and put-together — not sloppy. So while you could feasibly reach for tailored sweatpants here, we’re going with another hybrid option — specifically, classic drawstring trousers from the fine folks at Iron and Resin. Featuring organic cotton with 2 percent stretch and a straight fit, these are perfect pants for travel, what with room to move and versatile looks that can take you from the road to dinner without missing a beat.

Sutro Shoes Inc.

The Sneakers: Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up — $145

A clean white sneaker from a brand known for its hard-wearing boots.

Who doesn’t love a pair of crisp, classic white sneakers for spring? Your Style Guide author surely does. And while you could certainly swap these white sneakers for something a little more polished — like refined suede Chelsea boots — the simple, clean silhouette of the Allister Lace-up works just as well.  The cushioned footbed should keep your feet comfortable for hours at a time, and there’s hardly a spring style combination more widely accepted than tailored chinos and white sneakers.

The Belt (To Pack): J. Crew Factory Washed Leather Belt — $24.50

No need to get too fancy when it comes to a leather belt to pack for weekend trips.

Packing up your Leon Weekender is going to require some planning. After all, if you’re only going away for a weekend, perhaps you can survive with only a brown leather belt — particularly if you’re wearing drawstring pants on one of those days. But, let’s say you also bring along some slim dark denim. Well, enter this affordable belt for classic style that’s wearable with everything from tough leather boots to the aforementioned white sneakers. It’s as simple as that.
Huckberry

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand — $205

A great-looking watch for a solid price — spring style on the go, without a doubt.

You didn’t think we forgot about including an essential leather watch, did you? Of course not. Just as with packing up only one belt, perhaps you can get through a weekend with just one watch — and if that’s your challenge, I’d humbly submit the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand as your watch of choice, amigo.  The folks at Jack Mason make watches that pull from a variety of influences, from flight to seafaring, and the handsome Aviator 3-Hand combines rugged good looks and crisp, classic style.

The Socks: Richer Poorer Griffin Socks — $8

Richer Poorer

Simple stripes and a nice. comfortable weight for spring.

If you’re going to drop some serious cash on a slim bomber jacket and a durable leather weekender bag, you might as well hang onto your spare change when it comes to buying socks, right? Fear not — Richer Poorer makes high-quality socks in a variety of fabrics despite the low price. Those options include the “Everyday Midweight” option seen here. Even better? They won’t look half-bad in terms of color and design when you take off your spring sneakers, either.

The Underrated Accessories: Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit — $49.98 AND Decibullz Custom-Fit Bluetooth Wireless Earphones — $119.99

A durable dopp kit and high-quality headphones — both great pieces to have handy on the road.

If you’ve been hunting for a stylish men’s dopp kit for a while now, end that search ASAP, because the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit is here to save the day. Heavy-duty olive drab canvas sets this kit apart, as do small touches like leather zipper pulls. In short, it’s a much better way to carry your grooming essentials than a plastic bag. And who doesn’t need premium headphones, right? The kicker with Decibullz? These headphones can be molded to the shape of your ear, just like a mouthguard. If you need some music to listen to on your trip, might I recommend Lucius or Local Natives? Onward.

There are a lot of details to consider when packing up for a spring road trip. Starting with a durable, functional weekender bag like the Leon Weekender is as good a jumping-off point as any, however. And for travel that could start out chilly and end up warm, layering essentials like the La Paz Bomber should prove premium, well-made and versatile. The same can be said for a classic spring polo — enter the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Polo. Lest we leave behind any stylish travel accessories, don’t forget to pack a durable casual watch — certainly, the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand is the way to go. Clean white sneakers and grey Iron and Resin chinos also make for easygoing, high-low style, which is just what you want when on the road. And certainly, everyday carry pieces like the Hudson Suttler USA Dopp Kit are going to make your life a whole lot easier — and more stylish — when traveling. If you’ve got pieces you’d like to see added, or if you think this suggestion is just fine and dandy, leave a note on The Style Guide Facebook page.

See you on the road — stay stylish!
