The Friday Read: A Visit to NYC’s New Wonderland Bar & Labor Day Weekend Menswear Sales

Photo: Patrick Dolande/Courtesy of Wonderland NYC

My friends, welcome back to another edition of the Friday Read, where we (and by we, I mean me) cover a bit of everything under the sun these days, from menswear to spirits and occasionally, fine dining. Often, all three go together quite handily, as I’ve found out through my many freelance writing pursuits — and my coverage of spirits, food and drink over at Maxim.

Today, we’ll step away from typical menswear coverage towards something sure to whet your whistle, so to speak (for a dash of men’s style coverage, click that link).

My passion for spirits fortunately (and rather incredibly) opens up a great deal many doors, like the chance to imbibe and sip at some of the finest restaurants in New York City. That’s never a bad way to unwind ahead of a busy Labor Day weekend, and it’s often made all the better by the companionship of my blonde-haired sweetheart Mary, a lover of fine food and drink herself.

And that led me earlier this week to the immersive, whimsical and impressive Wonderland Bar NYC, a just-opened East Village experience that’s a step up from the more typical dive bars of the surrounding area.

For one, it boasts a menu helmed by Michelin starred chef Peter He — if you’ve been watching “The Bear” or following along with the restaurant industry at large, that’s a major deal. This new spin on a Sichuan gastropub lives up to the hype, and then some.

Its cocktails are theatrical in nature from start to finish, presentation very much included, and its food menu (divided into hot and cold plates) also adds some serious flair to the dining experience.

Just witness the flaming orb presentation of the incredible Shiso Leaf, boasting gin, shiso leaf, peach, ginger, syrup and lime in, well, an orb surrounded by a flaming garnish (you can see more on my Instagram, or at the top of the page, of course).

The New Fashioned, delivered in a smoking decanter and boasting a blend of truffle-oil-washed bourbon, simple syrup and bitters, also shines, while my personal favorite happened to be the blend of gin, ginger, cardamom, peach, passion fruit and lemon found in the All My Lovin’.

Mary also loved this option, and we both couldn’t get enough of the New Fashioned. There’s a nice divide between refreshing and crisp as well as savory, and all just so happen to pair nicely with Wonderland’s diverse food offering.

A selection of pleasantly spicy, savory bites complement these cocktails in expert fashion including the Chicken Skewers (a personal favorite) and the Peppercorn Squid, the most popular dish on the menu (and the favorite at our table).

But a true highlight, in rather astounding fashion, was the Kumamoto Oyster Ensemble, an oyster topped with uni and caviar. Yes, you read that right. If you love oysters, buckle up — while the serving size accounts for just one oyster, it’s absolutely astonishing.

The space itself, with a purple neon sign looking out over a ceiling adorned with greenery, is also eye-catching in its own right (especially if you dine in a booth styled like a bird cage). It’s a touch disco, a touch whimsical and truly wondrous.

Suffice to say, Wonderland delivers every step of the way: Presentation, flair, flavor and a seriously memorable atmosphere. It won’t be the last time you hear from me on this excellent new locale, so keep your eyes peeled for my byline.

Huckberry Labor Day Sale 2024.

Now, before I let you go — and before I let you start planning your next trip to the Big Apple, or at least your next night out in Manhattan, allow me to offer one menswear recommendation fit for a dive bar or a restaurant with Michelin cred. That, my friends, would be the chance to check out the Huckberry Labor Day Sale, where you can get an extra 15% off already on-sale gear at the lauded Huckberry Sale section.

It’s part of an action-packed slate of the best Labor Day menswear sales, including prime selections from brands like Todd Snyder and Taylor Stitch. And since it’s the last gasp of summer, it’s high time you added a few early fall selections to your cart, is it not? Cheers to the weekend, cheers to excellent food and drink, and cheers to excellent menswear close at hand all the while. Thanks, as ever, for reading!

The Friday Read: A Pure Michigan Weekend & The Best Labor Day Sales from Huckberry and Taylor Stitch

Best Huckberry menswear for 2023.

It’s hard to believe I’m typing this, but welcome to the last Friday Read of summer — or at least, the last “unofficial” weekly roundup of summer. There’s good news on the horizon, as early fall is one of my favorite seasons for menswear, and perhaps you feel the same way.

It’s really the undisputed champion among the seasons, and as prime a time as any for lacing up your new favorite chukka boots, layering up one of the best shirt jackets and enjoying a nip or two of whiskey (to name but two of my favorite pursuits).

Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket.

Before we can embrace a brisk breeze, crisp leaves underfoot and the warmth of the Flint and Tinder Trucker Jacket from Huckberry, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a momentous summer — including two trips back to my lovely home state of Pure Michigan.

I’ve spent the past week with family on iconic Mackinac Island, a longtime resort destination set across a small 8.2-mile island that outlaws transport by anything but bike or horse-drawn carriage. It’s a wrinkle in time with plenty of charm. Fascinating, right? I found it an ideal time to test out some early fall menswear from the likes of Billy Reid, Sea Culture and more, as you might have seen on my Instagram.

Taylor Stitch menswear 2023.

And of course, we took our time enjoying bright, blazing sunsets, cold local beer (and wine!) and panoramic views of the Great Lakes. What a way to close out summer among family, yes? I also took advantage of the chance to wear gear from Taylor Stitch (although the above jacket remains on my wish list!).

Elsewhere, I’ve got #NYFW events in my sights next week back East, but for now, I plan to enjoy a spirited Labor Day back in the Lower Peninsula watching Michigan State football and sipping on my favorite Michigan beer from the likes of Bell’s Brewery (Oberon is still going strong, in my book at least!).

I’ll leave you with two last Labor Day weekend recommendations: You can get 15 percent off the Huckberry Sale section for Labor Day, and you can enjoy 20 percent off the Taylor Stitch Last Call section, too. How’s that for a proper end to summer? If you score any stellar deals this weekend, let me know in the comments below. Cheers to a long weekend, folks!

The Friday Read: The Best Labor Day Weekend Menswear Sales & Huckberry’s Fall Collection

Or at least, early fall. If you’ve been reading the blog as of late, you’re hopefully well-prepared with some of the best fall menswear, like that of the rugged Huckberry Fall Collection (as seen at the top of the page).

Satchel and Page

If you’re not quite there yet? Well, there’s a plethora of men’s style essentials to go around in my roundup of the best Labor Day menswear sales. Now, because your time is important, and brief, I kept it relatively short — I’m talking all about the best Labor Day sales from 15 reliable, stylish brands, many of whom you’ve seen on the blog before. If not? Consider yourself in luck, because there’s no time like the present to shop the best fall menswear picks. For now, I’ll leave you to it — thanks for reading and happy shopping, my friends!

That’ll bring today’s Friday Read — Labor Day weekend sales edition! — to a close. For now, be sure to let me know via Twitter or Instagram if you scored any of the above deals or favorite picks. As for me, I’ll be on the lookout for an icy cold beer in Brooklyn as I enjoy the season opener for my Michigan State Spartans football program tonight. Go Green and thanks for reading!

The Friday Read: Labor Day Weekend, How to Wear a Denim Shirt & Grilling Essentials

Probably Whiskey Mug - Cool Material

A well-appointed way to head into the weekend, right?

Cheers, my friends, to the impending start of Labor Day weekend. Let’s kick it off with a choice beverage via Swag Brewery’s Probably Whiskey Mugs at Cool Material — perfect for a camping trip, a cabin weekend or a bonfire. But back to Labor Day: Can you believe it’s here already? As I always tend to say when the summer wraps up, it feels like we were just talking about the best summer shorts or the best way to wear boat shoes. Rest assured, both of those tips will still come in handy, because of course, it’s prime time to close out the season the right way. So, here we are.

Be it the best grilling essentials for Labor Day weekend or, say, a new way to wear a denim shirt, it’s all below in today’s Friday Read. Those picks today will also include a stylish watch from the well-appointed UNCRATE Supply Shop, which holds a bevy of the best gear picks for men. Of course, there’s one thing you should also take care of before and during the weekend, and that’s getting your favorite beer delivered right to your door. You’ll see this in future posts here on the blog, but I’ve taken to using Drizly alcohol delivery to get my favorite craft beers in a flash, along with whiskey and much more.

Speaking of gear picks for men, have you had the honor of subscribing to my newsletter, The Style Guide In Brief? Of course, I only kid. But if you want a  bit more of The Style Guide than I’ve got room for here, from indie rock to coffee to the best gear picks, twice a week, do yourself a favor and subscribe. I’ve featured favorite bands like Future Islands and The War On Drugs alongside some of my favorite boots and more. It’s a good time, guaranteed.

How will you be enjoying your weekend? I’m going to be capping my time off in Florida in relaxing fashion, heading to Orlando to (safely) see my sister, and what’s more, experience (safely!) Universal Orlando Studios. It’s always a favorite of the Hayhoe family, especially The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (a huge part of my childhood!). To follow along with all my adventures in style, be sure to follow me on Instagram. For now, I’m off to kick back, listen to the new album by The Killers and enjoy what’s (probably) some coffee. Cheers & thank you for reading!

A rugged, durable, affordable watch for late summer and early fall.

Vintage-inspired high-top sneakers that’ll come in handy for fall.

Let’s close this thing out by talking about early fall style, OK? I’ve got a pair of rugged leather boots for you right now that’ll come in handy on September adventures, as well as when the weather takes a turn for the worse in the season ahead. The Taylor Stitch Moto Boots are about as good as it gets if you want some of the best leather boots for men, and that’s just a fact. Read my full Taylor Stitch boots review for more. As always, thank you again for reading — have a great weekend and let’s look toward fall in style. I’ll raise a glass to that!

The Friday Read: Labor Day Weekend, The Dickies 1922 Collection & the Best New IPA to Try Now

Step into the holiday weekend in style with this perfectly rugged jacket.

You see the rugged Flint and Tinder Flight Jacket pictured above? It’s perhaps the best transitional jacket to wear right now, and it’s one heck of a style essential to have handy for Labor Day weekend (seriously, you can still order it here before you head out for the weekend!). This long weekend is a momentous and exciting one, seeing as it closes the books on summer and signals the unofficial start of fall — and with that comes plenty of seasonal style content on the site, of course.

Before we dive right in though, I’m taking in all that the weekend has to offer in NYC. I was initially supposed to head down to sunny Florida, but over the past few days, Hurricane Dorian is on track to make the state … decidedly less sunny. My family is safe and sound in Fort Myers in the meantime, and while I keep in touch with them throughout the weekend, I’ll be enjoying the start of the Michigan State football season tonight, cold beer in hand. I also plan on making the trek out to Jersey City on Saturday to see the much-lauded live return of one of my favorite bands, Future Islands! I loved seeing them at last year’s “There’s No Leaving New York” Festival in NYC (featuring The National!) and this will be my first time hearing new songs they’ve got on tap! To say I’m excited to head to the excellent White Eagle Hall (and have a cold one at Jersey City craft beer establishment Pint) is an understatement. How about your weekend plans? Follow along with all the fun on my Instagram. In the meantime, here’s the Friday Read you’ve been waiting for below! Cheers.

  • We’ve talked in the past about how difficult it can be to find the right made-in-America menswear — that’s why I’m such a fan of the Dickies 1922 Collection, a series of updated takes on the brand’s iconic silhouettes, from a tough truck driver jacket to a classic chambray shirt. Read my full overview at The Manual for more.
  • Hey, it’s the weekend — treat yourself to a cold one, will ya? And on that note, I give you perhaps the best new IPA (OK, well, one of them at least). It’s coming to you courtesy of Goose Island, and the Next Coast IPA is the right beer to add to your cooler or fridge in time for Labor Day weekend, tailgating season and beyond that.
  • For Labor Day weekend — the style moment of the hour, as it were — you’re going to want gear that’s laidback and breezy, casual yet versatile … so, kind of like this Faherty Brand poncho. It’s the perfect piece of weekend outerwear, easily paired up with slim chino shorts, white canvas sneakers and a classic white tee to head to the beach or the boardwalk. It’s an effective way to layer up when summer’s last call gets breezy, too.

The Best Basics. Summer Ready.

And with that, it’s time to close out summer and head into the weekend. Fear not, though — I’ve got one last suggested piece of reading for your enjoyment. I’m guessing — just a guess — that my guide as to what to wear to a bonfire could come in handy this weekend. It’s all things rugged-yet-casual, and ready for anything. Enjoy the weekend, folks!

The Friday Read: Labor Day Weekend, MAHI Leather and Faherty Brand

A rugged, richly crafted leather tote that you can customize as you’d like — read more below.

In today’s Friday Read, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover before we head into Labor Day weekend. I hope your week has been an enjoyable one, packed with the best in #menswear.  It’s been busy around these parts. This blog in the past few weeks has covered what to wear for Labor Day weekend, the chukka boots to buy for fall and plenty more. Let’s pivot, for a second, to how you’re going to haul your everyday carry this weekend and beyond. I think I’ve got a solution to share if you’ve been looking for the answer. That solution, folks, is MAHI Leather and the company’s essential, handcrafted line of durable, functional and great-looking leather goods. In particular, I’ve been hauling around the brand’s Classic Leather Tote in a handsome shade of brown leather courtesy of MAHI– it’s served me so well, I took it to Lollapalooza 2017, as you can see above. And if you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen that this bag is plenty versatile and durable.

For your next weekend adventure and well beyond, I’d say you should consider making the brand a part of your travel gear — the leather is soft and supple, the quality is on-point and the chance to customize the Classic Leather Tote was quite neat. With that being said, I’m going to use that tote to haul around some craft beer and a few other menswear essentials in the days ahead. Speaking of #menswear essentials — we’ve got a few choice reads for you, plus details on an excellent Labor Day weekend sale, detailed in the rest of this post below. Let me know on Twitter how you’re spending the weekend — and reader feedback is always welcome in the comments! Without further ado … let’s close out the summer in style and look toward a heck of a season ahead.

A handsome washed buttondown from Faherty Brand is but one of my picks from the brand’s Labor Day weekend sale.

  • Doing some shopping to close out summer? You might be in luck when it comes to stellar #menswear — Faherty Brand, purveyors of breezy, casual style — are offering an extra 25 percent off all sale items to celebrate the holiday! And there are some excellent picks in that list, from striped tees to indigo buttondowns, including my personal favorite pick as seen above. Get to shopping, yeah?

  • Elsewhere on the men’s style front, lovers of classic men’s sneakers should rejoice. GQ.com dives into the one sneaker that — unexpectedly — stokes the sneaker-loving fires of plenty of menswear fans: The J. Crew x Nike Killshot 2. If you’ve ever pined for these sneakers or tried (and failed) to get your hands on a pair, you’re not alone.
  • Let’s talk accessories really quickly — if you’re new to the blog, allow me to introduce you to our Saturday Style Pick of the Week series. This week’s stylish entry is coming tomorrow, but last week’s entry covers a rugged leather watch fit for all kinds of wear this upcoming fall. Certainly, you should add it to your everyday carry haul. The Halios Laguna Watch also comes with a stainless steel strap — two stylish men’s watches for the (investment-level) price of one. So, that’s just a taste of our weekly Style Pick series. Come through tomorrow for more!
  • And before we take off for the long weekend, let’s look again toward fall menswear essentials. As it were, my latest post for The Manual does just that — I take a dive into the brands making fall’s best leather jackets. Splurge or save, spend or wait it out a little bit; it’s a seasonal style staple that you surely need.

Ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for reading — I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend! If you check back tomorrow, we’ll have a new Style Pick of the Week waiting. And if you check back on Sunday … we very well might just have a new See Now, Buy Now post for you. I can’t guarantee anything, but I know a guy  …

See you soon,

-Beau

Can you believe it’s Friday? More importantly, can you believe it’s the Friday before Labor Day weekend? Where did the time go? For this style writer, a lot of this past month has been spent on the road — this particular week, that mean a long, relaxing (and fairly stylish) summer vacation to Florida, including some excellent time spent in the sun and sand. Plus, the trip was capped off by a standout AC/DC concert at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale — I think my hearing is still recovering.  Seriously, though — what a band. You can read much more here, but know that it was worth the early, early flight back to New York the next morning (to say the least). Throughout this past month, it’s also been great to travel back to Michigan for a wedding weekend and a Grand Rapids trip (all the while focused on travel style). I’ve also been really thankful this summer to  check so many items off my to-do list, from an upstate trip to see Lucius, one of my favorite bands, to a standout weekend at Governors Ball and a heck of a Saturday at Panorama. The chance to travel so many neat places, spend so much time with great friends and check out so many cool sights and sounds is one I definitely don’t take for granted — and I hope it’s been a summer of checking things off your to-do list as well (with plenty of highlights, to boot!). But we’re not done yet —  with Labor Day coming up, there are still plenty of chances to dress in style; what else would you expect? And we’ve got a jam-packed next few weeks of content — you can look out for a Fall Style Wish List and neat features that run the gamut from what to wear during football season to more personal travel style posts. Are you ready? I sure am. Keep up with daily style tips and tricks on Instagram, and check out a bit more daily #menswear at The Style Guide Facebook page.

Need one last story to read?

The Friday Read: Labor Day, Brooklyn Tailors and Fall Florals

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.

With Labor Day weekend upon us, the question is: How will you be spending your final days of summer? And what will you be wearing? For more on what gear to grab, head here. A nice Grayers polo or a great pair of sweatshorts wouldn’t go amiss, I’m sure. On a personal front, it’s set to be a busy weekend for me — I’m heading out to Coney Island Brewing this afternoon to catch up with co-founder Chris Adams for a piece on my friend Pat Evans’ blog Grand Conversations before catching the season opener of my beloved Michigan State Spartans! Always an exciting way to start fall. And then I’m heading back to my favorite state — that would be Michigan — for a family wedding on Saturday (likely including a stop in East Lansing). So it’s set to be a busy one for sure — do you know what you’re style essentials you’re packing in that bag of yours yet? If not, best hop to it. Meanwhile, peruse some weekend reading picks below — wherever you head this week, stay safe and stylish!

    • Gear Patrol caught up recently with Brooklyn Tailors, who received high praise from the likes of GQ as part of that publication’s 2014 Best New Menswear Designers in America class.
    • Common Projects, of the legendary and minimal white sneakers you might covet but likely can’t afford, is making an excellent pair of dress shoes — yes, dress shoes — fit for the fall.
    • If you haven’t swung by Style Girlfriend in a while, or if you haven’t checked out the site at all, it’s worth a look — editor Megan Collins and her team show you how to rock those floral prints into fall.
    • Style Read of the Week: As you may or may not be aware, I’m a big watch fan — with affordability and versatility in mind, of course. We move away from the typical Long Read and instead direct your attention to five watches every guy should own, as picked by my buddy Barron at Effortless Gent.
