Quick, look at what you’re wearing. And if it’s not a stylish shirt for summer, I don’t know what to tell ya. Luckily, we here at The Style Guide can help today. You’ll absolutely recognize the brands on this list, from Abercrombie and Fitch to Mott and Bow (they make shirts now!) and classic brands like Grayers. It’s a full set of tried-and-true brands that can easily go just about anywhere you want this season — be that planning for a Memorial Day weekend trip or picking out to gear to wear to the beach this summer. If it’s easygoing versatility you seek, look no further. See how I style my own favorite spring shirts over on Instagram, and keep up with my writing on Twitter in the meantime. Now, onto the picks!

#1. Outerknown Shibui Short-Sleeve Essential Shirt — $175

Outerknown

A unique shirt with head-turning style and sustainability in mind.

If at first you found yourself balking at that price, bear with me here. Outerknown is the brain child of pro surfer Kelly Slater — a legend in the water who’s shown a knack for successfully launching a standout brand. Outerknown proves that sustainability and style can go hand-in-hand — it’s a premium approach that results in the price tag you see above, but the Outerknown Shibui Short-Sleeve Essential Shirt really is too good to pass up when it comes to unique-yet-versatile style. Wear this shirt with stylish shorts or slim swim trunks and definitely team it with slim light wash denim on weekends galore.
Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

#2.Abercrombie & Fitch Garment-Dyed Oxford — $39

Abercrombie and Fitch

A shirt that calls to mind the Oxfords of years past, made with excellent fabric.

Ladies and gentlemen, you might recognize this shirt from my Instagram or indeed, from my Spring Style Wish List. The folks at Abercrombie and Fitch were kind enough to send it along as a gift, and I can certainly recommend it to you in good faith. This one calls to mind a well-worn favorite shirt, what with its garment-dyed fabrication. The colorway is just different enough from a plain white Oxford, and that makes it the type of shirt that works just as well with black denim at a rock concert as it does with grey chinos at the office.

Sutro Footwear

#3. Mott and Bow Graham Slim Buttondown Shirt — $79.98

Mott and Bow

A pleasing color and slim fit make this new Mott and Bow shirt a must-have.

Entry number three on our list of the best men’s shirts for summer comes at you via Mott and Bow — lest you thought they only made your favorite pair of classic blue denim, they recently introduced a line of soft, premium and well-constructed denim shirts. The Mott and Bow Graham Slim Buttondown Shirt  in particular features a pleasing dark blue wash, exceptionally soft and breathable fabric, and the type of casual style that would work well for exploring Brooklyn (among other pursuits).

Greats

#4. Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt — $79.98

Grayers

A reliable upgrade to your classic Oxford, with plenty of style points and exceptional quality built in.

Everyone needs a reliable Oxford in their closet, even in the summer — yes? It’s the type of shirt to pair with everything from a classic pocket tee to your favorite lightweight navy blazer, and you can wear it in all style situations. That goes for casual Friday and that certainly rings true for a  weekend coffee date. So, why the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt? Well, folks — Grayers uses some of the best fabric in the business, and that means the Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt is a reliable layer on breezy beach nights and early mornings alike.

#5. Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in Midnight Cowboy — $79 OR La Paz Leao Polo — $115

Criquet Shirts

Two polo shirts for the picking, both made with soft fabric and featuring slim fits.

Because it wouldn’t be summer without a smattering of classic polos in the mix, I’m pleased to present to you not one, but two slim and well-made polo shirts for the season. The Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in Midnight Cowboy upgrades the brand’s classic Player’s Shirt with a sharp silhouette and soft fabric — as you might recall from this #OOTD on how to wear light wash jean.  And as to the La Paz Leao Polo?  Well, my loyal Style Guide readers … it features French terry construction, a  reliable fit and Portuguese-made construction. Not bad at all, ehh?

Alright, thanks for the applause. Wait, you are cheering, right? When picking out a summer shirt, the same exact keys apply as they do the rest of the year — start with quality and comfort, plus a great fit. That’s where reliable polo options like the Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in Midnight Cowboy and the La Paz Leao Polo perform so admirably. And if it’s sustainability and eco-friendly style that you see, the Outerknown Shibui Short-Sleeve Essential Shirt is going to be your best friend for barbecues and beyond. And for seasonal versatility — and again, great quality — the Grayers Jaspe Double Cloth Shirt is the way to go. Of course, don’t rule out a classic Abercrombie and Fitch Oxford, either.  It’s certainly tough to narrow any list down to just five, so let me know of any picks I missed via the comments section. Excited to see what y’all come up with!

And as always — stay stylish.

#OOTD: What to Wear to a Weekend Barbecue

You just got word that there’s a barbecue this weekend. Craft beer? Check. Burgers? You got it. But what #menswear to wear to man the grill or just hang out while sipping brews? We’ve got you covered today on The Style Guide — from A-to-Z, this is the place to be. It’s a little bit different than, say, dressing for a spring bar crawl — it’s more casual and requires gear that’s as stylish as it is suited to wear to play a little pick-up football. And you’ll want an extra layer in case the party runs late or it gets chilly out there. So, we’re keeping it cool and laidback with today’s #OOTD. You’ll recognize upgraded basics — from a classic bomber jacket to a sturdy striped tee — and you’ll recognize tried-and-true favorites like stylish brown leather sneakers and slim light wash jeans.  See? Comfortable, casual and classic style at its finest. But, I won’t spoil all the fun now. Check out the full set of #menswear picks below, chime in on Twitter and see how I style my daily ensembles over on Instagram (lotsa clothes on the ‘Gram, trust me). Enjoy, cheers and be sure to man the grill!

Outerknown

Start with a supremely high-quality tee and go from there with casual spring layers.

The T-Shirt: Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt, $62.98 —  Let’s start things off the right way — with a sustainably made and uniquely stylish striped pocket T-shirt. Yes indeed, the Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt is pricey, yes …. but ultimately worth it. Just don’t spill any mustard on it.

The Jacket: Outlier Supermarine Soft Core Bomber Jacket, $595 — First off, this jacket surely is pricey. But why go for a paper-thin bomber jacket from a fast-fashion retailer when you can get a comfortable, stylish and very performance-ready piece fit for spring breezes and beyond?

Florsheim
The Jacket: Flint and Tinder All-American Washed Jeans in Slim Tapered, $98  — I’m all for investing in quality — and that’s exactly what Flint and Tinder brings to the table. These slim-fit light wash jeans have a pleasing light wash that’s perfect for spring.
The Sneakers: Pikolinos Vic Trainers, $200 — While you might be tempted to break out the flip-flops, leave those in the closet this time. These beautifully crafted leather sneakers feature everything from a rich brown colorway to cool and eye-catching stitching.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

The Watch: Nautica SYD Leather Watch, $125 — Nothing screams barbecue-ready style than a tough, rugged and stylish watch. This Nautica timepiece looks unique and crisp — it can definitely stand up to a game of backyard football, too.

The Bottle Opener: Billykirk Bottle Opener, $17.98 — Here’s the piece de resistance, perhaps the most crucial item in your everyday carry for this barbecue — the Billykirk Bottle Opener should be the hit of the party, ehh?

The Beer: Founders Brewing All Day IPA, Price Varies — It might be the Michigan native in me coming through, but there might not be a better summer BBQ beer than Founder’s All Day IPA. I absolutely love visiting the brewery when I trek back to Grand Rapids, and that won’t change soon!

The Bag: Nisolo Lori Tote, $134.98 — OK, so you’ve got your six-pack of craft beer, you’ve got your slim bomber jacket, you’re wearing your stylish striped tee — how are you going to carry everything you need to carry? In the durable and handsome Nisolo Lori Tote, I should say.

Greats

And, there it is. All set for your first summer barbecue? With classic, easy-to-wear pieces like a slim bomber jacket and the Outerknown Shonan Stripe Pocket T-Shirt, I’d say you should be all set for anything that comes your way. And a pair of denim like the Flint and Tinder All-American Washed Jeans in Slim Tapered are about as versatile and stylish as it gets when it comes to a casual pair of jeans for the weekend. Add in essential everyday carry pieces like a tough Nautica watch, well-made leather sneakers and the strong Nisolo Lori Tote and you can get from the barbecue and back in style. Oh, and don’t forget an absolute must-have — that’d be the Billykirk Bottle Opener, folks. Alright, I’ll see you at the grill!

Thanks for reading and stay stylish,

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Memorial Day This Year

Check your calendars, hurry — it’s Memorial Day weekend comin’ at ya!  And if you’re wondering how to dress for Memorial Day, you’ll like today’s post. It’s the first real full summer weekend, and that’s much-welcomed around these parts. If you missed out on taking a spring road trip or hitting the road for spring break, it’s a chance to get away from town and hopefully enjoy some lovely weather and time with friends & the fam.  I’ll be trekking down to Florida for a  great long weekend with family, and I had the chance to travel to upstate New York for Memorial Day last year — both prime chances to break out some stellar #menswear. So, let’s assume you’ve got gear like a stylish leather weekend bag and a functional dopp kit at the ready — what are you going to wear at your destination? Be it exploring a boardwalk, strolling through a quaint downtown or catching some rays, today’s Style Guide suggestion has it all. Let me know what you think over on Twitter, and keep up with my fast-moving style on Instagram.

The Shirt: Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe — $84

Criquet Shirts

A new take on the polo shirt, with a tailored fit and comfortable fabric.

Listen up: If you’re looking for a warm-weather staple that can work just as stylishly at a Memorial Day barbecue as at a patio bar, pick up the Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe. Like the much-loved Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — as seen in this #OOTD —  the Club Shirt is a modern, refined and comfortable take on your favorite polo shirt. It features both retro details, like cool stripes plus contrasting sleeve cuffs and collar, and a streamlined fit. Yessir, the Club Shirt could be a new summer go-to. Be sure to layer up with transitional spring outerwear if gets chilly.

Sutro Footwear

The Bottoms: Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts — $138 OR Alex Crane Bo Shorts — $59.98

Alex Crane

Two options, two scenarios. Grab the right pair of shorts for play, grab the left pair of shorts to swim.

So, we’re tackling two different scenarios here. Let’s say your Memorial Day involves some time at the pool, the beach or the lake — break out the retro-inspired, durable and stylish Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Board Shorts. They’re made by hand, the color scheme is neutral and sharp, and they’re more tailored than your average pair of swim trunks. If, on the other hand, you’re manning the grill, the Alex Crane Bo Shorts, in a neutral and unexpected Sand color, are a prime pick (and they’ll contrast nicely with the striped Club Shirt).

The Sneakers: SeaVees Huntington Middie — $108

SeaVees

Versatile kicks that are a favorite of this blog for several reasons — including the easygoing good looks.

Is it any surprise that we’re reaching for classic, easily wearable and versatile slip-on sneakers like the SeaVees Huntington Middie? They’re a favorite for a number of reasons, from the durable chukka-like cut to the clean white color and the ability to wear to the beach, to the pool or to the boardwalk. You could even wear these ones with slim light wash jeans as you travel to your Memorial Day getaway, and they’re perfect to wear to kick back over a cold brew.

The Watch: Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch — $449.98

Deep Blue Watches

A striking watch with tough specs and dependable style for the road, for the beach and beyond.

Here’s where we really drive home the idea of versatile, accessible style. Heading out for a four-day weekend? You just might be all set with one watch — that’s right, just one. The Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch  is that very timepiece, what with the durable specs to work on land or at sea, with great style to go along with it. Take it in the pool, take it in the ocean and wear it to grill burgers after — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch merges rugged good looks with dependable style.

The Sunglasses: Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses — $109.98

Raen Optics

Sharp and modern-yet-retro style in a pair of sunglasses that barely top $100.

We here at The Style Guide champion the idea of style that looks great and goes wherever you go — that’s also the case when it comes to accessories. And when you consider the vintage look and sharp style of the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses, you get all of that and then some. Handcrafted in France, the Arlo Sunglasses, just like the SeaVees Huntington Middie, can go all manner of places beyond Memorial Day weekend. And when you break ’em out to head to the beach, you just might be the best-dressed guy there.

The Essentials: Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal — $39.98 AND Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash — $184.98

Billykirk

Two easy-to-wear and easy-to-pair summer style picks.

You’ll notice we’re sticking with a neutral, essential color palette of charcoal for these two fine and dandy everyday carry pieces. Enter the Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  — who doesn’t love a well-made, retro-inspired ballcap? And the Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash is a mighty fine way to lug around a six-pack, your sunscreen and perhaps stylish wireless headphones to wear at the beach.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

The Must-Have: Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit — $43.98

Oars + Alps

The handy, simple-to-use and effective grooming kit to bring with you.

Whether you’re taking a plane, a train or an automobile (get it?) to your Memorial Day getaway, you need quick and easy grooming solutions. With effective performance and an easily packable nature, the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit could be just the solution you need. I covered it recently in my Style Pick of the Week series, and it’s a surefire winner in terms of keeping your skin looking fresh — no matter how many brews you have this weekend.

The “Gift” for the Party: GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg — $149

GrowlerWerks

With this uKeg, you’re instantly the hit of the party.

Now, the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg is pretty hefty — to say the least. So, let’s assume it’s not necessarily coming with you on your trip. But if you’re hosting or merely heading across town, it’s a thoughtful gesture to bring along a spot of choice brew for that Memorial Day cookout. Best of all? It’s a functional piece geared to keep beer cold and fresh — yet the GrowlerWerks 64oz. uKeg has a nice dash of vintage style thrown in for good measure.

Florsheim

Folks, that’ll about do it in the way of our Memorial Day style roundup. From handy accessories like the stylish Huckberry Explorer’s Cap in Charcoal  to the durable Billykirk Simple Tote in Ash, make sure you start with the right basics for your trip or barbecue. Accent those functional pieces with the right gear for the occasion — namely, the Criquet Shirts Club Shirt in Navy and Mint Stripe oughta get the job done. And for versatile style, be sure to pack (or wear) the easygoing Alex Crane Bo Shorts and the versatile SeaVees Huntington Middie. I can’t emphasize enough the need to bring along a rugged dive watch — the Deep Blue Daynight Scuba Watch is the way to. And for time kicking back in the sun, the Raen Optics Arlo Sunglasses are handsome and effective.  OK, I think that’s all the basics covered — right? Enjoy the weekend, folks — we’ll see you out there!

What are your thoughts on the above Memorial Day style picks? What you add or subtract?

Style Pick of the Week: Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt

What’s better to wear on a breezy spring day than a slim, stylish polo? Truly, there’s not much. And that’s even moreso the case with the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt, a piece that could quickly become your new favorite spring and summer polo.  It’s this week’s Style Pick of the Week for great reason — plenty of #menswear-centric design details set it apart from your average polo, and that means it’s to be applauded, praised …. and purchased. In fact, you might recognize the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt from a recent #OOTD entry, and it’s back today thanks to its versatility and sharp style.  It’s available in a wide plethora of colors, including the crisp Heavy Metal colorway seen in these photos.  Other options include the Midnight Cowboy Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt and the Mr. White Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt, so you certainly can’t go wrong in that regard.

It’s a newer take on the brand’s classic Player’s Shirt, and it’s a welcome addition to the brand’s line. Now, just why is it so tough to misstep when picking up a slim polo (or other stylish gear) from Criquet Shirts? Let me tell you, my good man.  Criquet Shirts started with the simple idea that today’s polo shirts featured sloppy collars and poor construction — using the idea of their favorite prep-school shirts as well as classic polos worn by the guys in their family, Criquet Shirts set out to upgrade the polo. And after checking out the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt (in multiple colorways) these past few weeks, I can definitely concur that it’s a style upgrade worth picking up for your closet this season. It’s comfortable enough to wear on a spring road trip, it’s stylish enough to layer under a lightweight navy blazer, and it’s well-made enough to work as hard as you do all day long — trust me.

Greats

A classic polo paired with crisp chinos and white sneakers — definitely the way to go. Renshaw Sneakers by Brooks Heritage. Standard Issue Utility Chinos by Brooks Heritage. Mod Watch by Timex x Todd Snyder. Notebook by Field Notes Brand. 810 Wallet by Brothers Leather Supply.

It features the sort of welcome design touches that other polo shirts lack — for starters, the sturdy collar sits nicely throughout the day, and doesn’t curl over (collar stays similar to your favorite dress shirt help out with that). And the 100 percent organic cotton jersey fabric is soft, comfortable and breathable — you’ll be comfortable in the heat with any color option of the  Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt. I’ve found mine to be handy and versatile enough to wear with everything from slim Apolis chinos and classic SeaVees sneakers to stylish light wash denim and a classic bomber jacket. And although some are firmly in the anti-logo camp, the small Criquet logo stitched on the left chest pocket is understated enough that the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt works well on its own sans jacket. That’s great news if you’re in need of a polo — or several — to wear to work and then out to happy hour (without any of the bad connotations that bright polo shirts seem to conjure up). Feel free to wear it with tailored swim shorts and slip-on sneakers to the beach or boardwalk, too. And another thing — if you’ve found yourself wearing fewer and fewer polos over the years, it’s definitely time to start again. Make no mistake — the comfortable fabric, refined colors and tailored fit of the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt are all features that could be enough to make you a believer in the power of the polo once again.

So, are you back on-board with a polo for spring and summer? What about the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt?

Let me know in the comments — and we’ll see you out there!

The Friday Read: Shinola, Spring Travel and The National

Hey there, folks — it’s time to wrap up the week once more and jump right into The Friday Read on this fine Brooklyn day. How was your week? Tough to believe that we’ve rolled past Mother’s Day and we’ve now got Father’s Day on our radar in terms of shopping (that is, in addition to the other #menswear shopping recommendations we’ve made on this site). Time’s positively been flying by, especially considering that I traveled to Indiana in style last weekend to catch up with old college friends, try out some craft brews at Goshen Brewing Company and take in the quiet tranquility of the Midwest — if you follow me on Instagram though, you know all about that trip. And back in NYC, we’ve been busy on the blogging and writing front — you’ll see a few handy spring travel tips and more men’s style news to know below.

Of course, I’m particularly excited about what’s to come in the days ahead. Specifically, I’m looking forward to exploring the lovely borough of Queens today in advance of what should be an incredible show from acclaimed British electro-pop band The xx. The band really defies any categorization though, and the group’s new third album — “I See You”— features some of the strongest musical work of 2017, hands down. Yes indeed, it should be a magical evening at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. What are your weekend plans? Standby for tomorrow’s new Style Pick of the Week, as it were — and feel free to join the conversation on Twitter if you’ve got a style query I can answer. Hopefully, I can help — let’s start with these items below, shall we?
Florsheim

  • Who doesn’t love a simple-yet-stylish spring and summer T-shirt? Better yet, how about one that supports a great cause? That’s exactly what Waves for Water is doing with its Artists for Water series, which applies the brand’s trademark focus to upgrading something we all know and love — The T-shirt. That means these T-shirts feature one-of-a-kind artwork from designers and artists alike, including Shawn Stussy (yes, the Shawn Stussy) and Nautas Kapas, the famed skateboarder, designer and now creative director at Birdwell Beach Britches. What does this mean for you, stylish reader? It means that now through July 3rd, you can keep your eyes peeled on the site for new weekly T-shirt launches.
  • OK, so how about upgrading your leather watch? If you happen to be in NYC, or visiting, you should absolutely check out the new Shinola Brooklyn store. They absolutely make some of the best men’s leather watches out there, and it was a treat to catch up with Shinola Creative Director Daniel Caudill for The Manual in advance of the opening, and I’d daresay you’ll be more than pleased with the brand’s handsome accessories and home goods.Greats
  • The summer is no time to let your outerwear game slip, especially on breezy nights — I’d suggest you pick up the Goldwin Packable Windbreaker, one of my recent entries for GearMoose, and let me know where you’re headed.
  • Now, let’s talk music. If you missed it last Saturday, you can — and should — watch the lovely ladies of California rock trio HAIM play two new songs on Saturday Night Live! Who else is excited for the group’s new album this July?  I sure am.

Last, but certainly not least ….

  • While we’re taking new music, it was with joy and surprise that I first listened to the new single by The National last week. If you haven’t heard the latest from the indie rock heroes, listen to “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” as soon as you can. Trust me.

OK, loyal Style Guide readers. That’s it — that’s all we’ve got! Unless, of course, you haven’t listened to that new single by The National. You should do that, ASAP.

Now, we’re ready for the weekend — stay stylish!

If not, we’re setting out to change that in a big way today — and I think you’ll be mighty pleased with the #menswear picks we’ve got on tap.  Whereas in the past, sneakers might have meant athletic shoes stamped with a large logo, you need not fear — today’s breed of kicks are essential, clean and crisp. They’re fit for wearing with everything from slim light wash denim to chino shorts and a heathered pocket tee. And yes, the right pair of spring sneakers can even work with a lightweight navy blazer (not to mention a standout leather jacket at your next spring bar crawl or casual weekend outing).  So, where exactly are we getting these sneakers from? You’ll notice picks from Style Guide favorites like SeaVees and Abercrombie & Fitch, among others. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination, though. Read on, shop away and chime in with any questions on Twitter — I’ll respond just as quick as I can (even if I’m getting another cup of coffee).

#1. Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers — $70

A classic silhouette updated for today’s modern man — at a low price and in a neat fabric.

We here in The Style Guide’s crowded fashion department of one have always loved the pleasingly streamlined, easy to wear, versatile Tretorn Nylite Sneaker. The style is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, in fact — that means it’s a classic primed for an update. Who better to do it than the new head of design at A&F, Mr. Aaron Levine? Levine’s work at Abercrombie — including heritage-inspired pieces like the Abercrombie & Fitch Wool Shirt — riffs on the classics in modern ways, and these garment-dyed sneakers are certainly modern enough for the rest of us. Buy ’em now and wear ’em out, especially with rolled light wash denim and a patterned shirt.

#2. House of Future Original Sneaker — $76.98

House of Future Original Sneaker

A classic-looking sneaker available at an attainable price — nothing gets better.

Want the look of a modern-day classic like the Common Projects Achilles — as clean of a white leather sneaker as it gets — for way less cash? Enter the House of Future Original Sneaker, currently available now for a downright steal via Huckberry — for that price, we’ll let the red heel accent slide. These are the sneakers to wear with an unlined navy blazer and chambray trousers on a breezy Friday, and you could even team them up with casual linen trousers and an indigo pocket tee for an extra-long weekend brunch. The fact that you get a super-clean silhouette and excellent quality? Well … what are you waiting for?

Sutro Shoes Inc.

#3. SeaVees Maslon Desert Boot — $84.98

SeaVees

The cut of a chukka and the weight (and good looks) of a sneaker.

Did you think we’d make it through a post on the best men’s sneakers without covering off on a Style Guide favorite? Surely not. The laidback cool, clean design and easygoing style potential of SeaVees sneakers makes the brand a consistent winner — not to mention the attainable pricing and spring break-ready style.  That’s why the Maslon Desert Boot is a choice pick for your next spring or summer sneaker upgrade.  Blending the DNA of a boot and a sneaker with a poplin twill upper in a head-turning shade of deep navy, these are the sneakers you should wear with a striped tee and classic khaki chinos.

#4. Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up — $145

Johnston and Murphy

A simple court-style shoe with neat styling details.

We’re back to discussing cleanly crafted, sharp-looking white sneakers here for option number four — and with plenty good reason. Johnston and Murphy has taken the same approach that makes its stylish leather boots so good, and translated that to sharp low-top white sneakers. With a textured leather upper and the styling to mimic a classic court shoe, the Allister Lace-up is the sneaker to wear with olive chinos and a heather grey polo for a Casual Friday look that’s a significant (yes, significant) style upgrade.

Oxfords under $50 CAD_125x125

#5. Pikolinos Vic Trainers — $200

Pikolinos

Rich craftsmanship and distinctive leather set these apart.

We’re all about reaching for unexpected sneaker styles with a touch of flair — provided they’re made with proper craftsmanship, that is. And in this case, the Pikolinos Vic Trainers  blend the feel of a pair of retro runner sneakers with the rich leather and comfort for which Pikolinos is known. If ever you’ve wanted to try out the navy blazer-light wash denim-leather sneakers combo that I so love, these are the ones to do it with — the brown leather makes them feel a bit more like a dress shoe (just a bit).

Honorable Mention: SeaVees Mariner Boot — $178

SeaVees Mariner Boot

A high-top sneaker crafted with durable fabric for winning style throughout spring and summer.

If you follow along with ye olde Style Guide, you’re aware that we love the SeaVees Mariner Boot for its blend of durability, rain-ready style and clean looks. In a cool and unique shade of olive, they’re a neat pairing with light grey or navy chinos and a white henley for a mix of high and low. Plus, they’ll work nicely whether you’re stomping around a summer music festival or working your away from coffee shop to coffee shop.

And that’ll nicely finish up our runthrough of the best men’s sneakers for spring. From the uniquely durable and weather-ready SeaVees Mariner Boot to the smart, retro-yet-modern Pikolinos Vic Trainers, your closet should be filled with options for the season ahead. A clean and classic pair of sneakers like the House of Future Original Sneaker are suitable for occasions both slightly dressier and laidback, and the Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up is similarly versatile for work or play. And as we covered above, the Maslon Desert Boot can pull double-duty on a spring road trip or a weekend coffee run. Round out your rotation with the Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn Nylite Sneakers, and you should be set this season! What do you think of the above picks? Feel free to hop on over to The Style Guide Facebook page or leave a missive in the comments.

Stay stylish,

#OOTD: The New Chambray Shirt to Wear This Season

Join us today for another entry in the #OOTD series. If you want to know all about the new chambray shirt to wear this season … it’s your lucky day. From upgrading your pocket tee to wearing a patterned shirt the right way, we’ve certainly covered a lot of ground in all matters spring style — and we’re continuing to do so today, with both sustainability and great looks in mind. Indeed, in the same way that a chambray shirt can work handsomely with a rugged shawl-collar cardigan in winter or a waxed trucker jacket in the fall,  so too can it work in the spring — namely, with a little less fabric in the sleeves. That’s where the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt comes into play. You might recognize it from a recent Style Pick of the Week entry, and it’s taking center stage now (it’s also been a hot seller via Huckberry, so I’d look to slim short-sleeve chambray shirting from Old Navy to replicate this look). That being said, let’s get to the most important part — your purchase of this shirt helps remove a pound of trash from oceans and waterways, part of the brand’s commitment to the environment. And why should you buy it? Plenty o’ reasons. It features a neat mini-plus sign pattern — just eye-catching enough — and a reliably tailored fit (no baggy shirts — who’s with me?). Both of those features make it perfect for everything from exploring Brooklyn to heading out on a weekend coffee date — and it also can team up with slim tan chinos and a pair of stylish men’s dress shoes for  summer half-day at the office (and happy hour afterward). Alright, so that’s the shirt to wear this season — but what to wear it with? Stick around for the below #OOTD. Stay stylish!

Pairing a cool chambray shirt with slim five-pocket pants, a lightweight bomber and simple sneakers — not bad at all.

The Shirt: United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt, $68 — See, we told you this shirt would look great — right? It’s the ideal way to start a spring style ensemble — slim, unique and ready for just about anything.

The Jacket: Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber, $129 — For those spring and summer evenings when it gets a bit breezy, the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber is the perfect weight and the perfect silhouette.

The Pants: Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth, $98 — Are you sick of hearing about Flint and Tinder yet? Not quite? Good. The Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth should prove tough, versatile and perfect for situations casual and slightly dressier — particularly alongside the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt.

The Sneakers: Dr. Scholl’s Rythms Sneaker in Grey Nubuck, $89.99 — For a bit of monochromatic style up against the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber, reach for affordable, crisp and classic grey sneakers.

The Socks: Darn Tough No Show Ultra-Light Cushion Socks, $29.98 — Because every pair of stylish spring sneakers deserves great socks, get this two-pack of tough (literally) no-show socks.

The Watch: Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch, $205 —  Tough, rugged and yet refined at the same time, the Jack Mason Aviator 3-Hand Watch is your answer to that age-old question: “What watch do I wear with this outfit?”
Greats
The Sunglasses: Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, $145 — Blending retro style with a decent price and great quality, the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses are a great pick-up in advance of summer — truly.

The Everyday Necessity: Nisolo Lori Leather Tote, $134.98 — More than $130 for a leather tote? Well, when it’s an extraordinarily high-quality bag that looks smart alongside your everyday carry, you should give it a shot.
Sutro Shoes Inc.

OK — all ready to wear your new favorite chambray shirt for spring and summer? Of course you are. The building blocks of this outfit are essentials every guy should have in his closet — the United By Blue Wenlock Chambray Shirt is just the beginning. It should look right at home alongside a versatile pair of pants like the Flint and Tinder 365 Pant in Earth. And simple grey sneakers are a nice complement to a casual spring jacket — the Public Rec Apparel Crosstown Bomber is the jacket you need now. Make no mistake, on-point accessories are also clutch — the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses could be your new go-to pair of shades, while the Nisolo Lori Leather Tote is a reliable and simple way to carry around your goods. All set for this season’s adventures? I know I am!

As always — stay stylish,

Style Pick of the Week: Bespoke Post Vibes Box

Editor’s note: Thank you to Bespoke Post for partnering with me on this post and providing the Bespoke Post Vibes Box for the purposes of this review. Enjoy, and thanks for supporting the brands that support The Style Guide!

The LSTN Sound Co. Fillmore Headphones — seen here — are but one reason to pick up the Bespoke Post Vibes Box. Hayward Sneakers by CLAE. Leatherback Writer by This Is Ground. Matches by Modern Anthology.

There are small lifestyle upgrades that, once you make them, mean you’ll never turn back. Dramatics aside, that’s certainly the case with the Bespoke Post Vibes Box – it’s a unique upgrade in more ways than one, and if you’re a fan of great audio quality, stellar looks and cool vibes, it’s just the ticket. I had the chance to partner with the brand on a review of the Vibes Box (thanks for sending, guys!), and it’s absolutely a winner. It’s one of several stellar “Boxes” sold by the fine folks at  Bespoke Post  – those Boxes are packages that constitute everything from everyday carry accessories to menswear to culinary goodies. And for the audiophile in your life (or yourself), the  Bespoke Post  Vibes Box simply can’t be beat. I had the chance to check out the Vibes Box recently, and although it contains only two products, both are extremely solid, well-made and stylish lifestyle additions. Namely, the LSTN Sound Co. Fillmore Headphones, featuring handsome, richly grained zebra wood casing and a uniquely rugged-yet-refined aesthetic, are a fine upgrade from typical white earbuds. What’s more, the Tinker, Dinker & Doc Eucalyptus Mint Candle is a pleasing addition to your home office. Whether you’re looking for a way to plug in during a day at the office or an afternoon working from home – or a chill evening unwinding — reach for the Vibes Box. As something of a music nut and a fan of live shows featuring everyone from Local Natives to Young the Giant to Lucius, I’d say I can absolutely appreciate great sound quality — and  Bespoke Post simply kills it. Whether I’m kicking back with the LSTN Sound Co.  Fillmore Headphones via the Vibes Box, or relaxing with my JBL E55BT Headphones, there’s something that helps me recharge after a long day than sitting back with my favorite tunes.  If that’s thpice case for you as well, you’ll love the  Bespoke Post Vibes Box – and I’m not just saying that.

But why go all in on the Bespoke Post Vibes Box if you already own multiple pairs of white earbuds? That’s just the very reason.  It’s worth it to make upgrades to your favorite everyday pieces, be that reaching for a better pair of suede Chelsea boots, grabbing high-quality light wash denim or upgrading your casual shirt. And when you pair those #menswear upgrades with a neat pair of headphones for your daily commute or your day at the office, you’re really putting together the whole package. Of course, that same approach extends to things like upgrading your grooming game and decorating your home in style – and it’s all the better that the Vibes Box looks as nice as it performs. It’s all about taking pleasure in the little things, and a quality listening experience is certainly one of those things. Thanks again to Bespoke Post  for partnering with me on this feature – I know I’ll continue to get great mileage out of both the LSTN Sound Co. Fillmore Headphones and the pleasing aromatherapy candle, day after day. Plug in, listen and enjoy!

Thanks, as always, for reading,

The Friday Read: Abercrombie & Fitch x Tretorn, Oars + Alps and LCD Soundsystem

Is it tough to believe we’re kicking off another edition of The Friday Read here at The Style Guide? If your answer is “Yes,” then we’re in the same boat. We’ve had a lot going on here in Brooklyn, from exploring the borough in style to getting you prepped to dress for your next Sunday brunch (we really do love our brunch here, tell ya what), plus busy times at my day job in fashion PR. It’s all fun and games though, and the fun is set to continue this weekend — I’ll be dressed in spring road trip style to head to Indiana to visit my best friend from college, Mr. Stephen Brook. Check out his work covering Notre Dame football and area sports, if you’re a fan of the Fighting Irish. And if you want to keep up with all the action, follow yours truly on Instagram or check in with The Style Guide on Facebook. Know that in other #menswear matters, I just finished a rather extensive — and I mean, extensive — feature for GearMoose covering the best men’s backpacks; keep your eyes peeled for that one.  For now though, let’s start the weekend nice and early with a few choice men’s style (and music!) reads. Enjoy!

  • Upgrade your grooming game in a big way with Oars + Alps and the brand’s handy, easy-to-use and nearly essential Athlete’s Grooming Kit. I’ve had the chance to test it out over these past few weeks, and I’ve been quite pleased with the results — check out my recent feature on the Oars + Alps Athlete’s Grooming Kit for yourself!
  • We love talking all about spring style essentials here at The Style Guide — and when it comes to your new favorite sneakers for spring and summer, Abercrombie and Fitch x Tretorn might just take the cake. It was excellent to learn about the new collaboration’s updated take on the classic Tretorn Nylite Sneakers for The Manual, and I’d urge you to pick up a pair while they’re around.
  • If you haven’t gotten around to listening to two (two!) new LCD Soundsystem songs, please take this chance to do so. The eclectic NYC indie rockers helped define a new era in the resurgent NYC rock scene thoughout the 2000s, and they’ve returned to the fold with festival appearances in recent years, plus an April residency at new venue Brooklyn Steel to boot! So, it’s nice that new music is here — with more to come, if our luck holds up!

One last thing before you go:

  • In need of a new favorite everyday carry piece? Namely, an essential and slim wallet? The TGT Army All Over Deluxe Wallet could be just the wallet to buy for you — and it’s with that durability and versatility in mind that I wrote about it for GearMoose. Enjoy, and let me know in the comments if you end up picking it up!

We’re all finished up for this week, folks. Time for the weekend! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Style Pick of the Week, and check back on Monday for more #menswear.

Reader Giveaway Opportunity: Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-ups

Editor’s note: Congrats to Jeff, our giveaway winner! Thanks to everyone for reading and participating!

Alright, loyal Style Guide readers — how are we doing today? I’ll tell you this — your day (and week) could be on the verge of getting a lot better? Why’s that? Today’s reader giveaway opportunity is all about the best spring sneakers you need now — one pair, to be more specific. And if you’re a fan of crisp white sneakers for warm weather, consider today your lucky day. As it were, you might recognize the Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up from an earlier Style Guide post on how to dress for a spring road trip. They’re a crisp, clean, simple and subtly stylish pair of sneakers from a brand that excels at making all sorts of excellent gear — from rugged leather boots to a waxed field jacket that proved crucial for my upstate New York road trip last fall.  And if you’ve been in need of a spring footwear upgrade, consider that problem solved (if you’re fortunate enough to win, that is). Why exactly are these sneakers such a crucial pair to have in your rotation this season? From the slim profile to the textured upper and clean silhouette, it’s tough to top these guys — I’ve found them to be similarly versatile with other spring gear (including the neat Ministry of Supply Daystarter Band-Collar Shirt and the Going Places Short), and I think you’ll be just as pleased.

Sutro Footwear

Crucially, I’d suggest you style these with a slim polo and classic tan chinos every chance you get — and know that they’ll work with slim chino shorts and a patterned short-sleeve shirt on weekends just as well as the weekday. And if you feel like keeping it simple — say, a slim heather grey pocket tee and olive chinos — the Johnston and Murphy Allister Lace-up works for that situation, too. So, those tips are all well and good — but how to win, ehh? To win these sneakers, leave a comment below telling me how you’d style them — that’s it! One winner will be chosen at random on midnight on May 13th. Yes indeed, that’s longer than our normal Style Guide giveaways — I’m excited about it, and I hope you are, too. Good luck out there, stay stylish and thanks for reading!
