Style Pick of the Week: Batch Men’s Luxtility Editor Shirt

A guy can never have enough durable and easily wearable shirts in his wardrobe, right? That’s absolutely right. That’s what makes the Luxtility Editor Shirt from Batch Men’s such a neat introduction into the marketplace. And that’s particularly what makes the style seen here — the Editor Shirt in Navy Foliole — an equally neat introduction into the #menswear space. So if you’re not yet familiar with Batch, today’s a great Saturday to get yourself acquainted. The new, start-up brand — based in Florida — produces its shirts (a blend of “luxury” and “utility”) in small batches, hence the name. They’ve worked with tailors to dial in an essential, modern fit, and that’s a positive for us fans of great-fitting menswear. I had the chance to test out the brand’s Specialist Luxtility Shirt (so named for its specialized, utilitarian style) and found the fit and deep navy color to be ideal for pairing with a casual weekend ensemble — yes, even untucked. The Editor Shirt shown here — again named for the precise guy who curates his lifestyle succinctly — continues that trend quite nicely, featuring a tapered fit through the sleeves and chest, plus that terrific pattern. Seriously, if you think prints should be left behind in spring and summer, think again.  The deep blue print shown here nicely offsets a classic cold-weather Glen plaid base, something seen rarely — if at all — in casual shirting. That combo is going to bring it nicely into the rich color hues of fall (changing leaves and all). And if you’re looking to be a guy who switches things up with the seasons, look no further than this shirt as a starting point.

Although it might seem difficult to wear a printed shirt like this at first, it’s a matter of pairing it up with straightforward style essentials for the fall — like garment-dyed jeans and crisp high-top sneakers (two of which you can find in this #OOTD). Neutral pieces like slim sand chinos can also help ground this piece, which is a positive if you’re hoping to wear it more casually. It’s just the right length to be worn untucked, and that slim fit keeps the shirt tucked in if you do go that route. The military details on the Luxtility Editor Shirt — including those chest pockets — help break up the pattern and add some rugged flair. And, like the Specialist Luxtility Shirt, it’s going to feel substantial but not scratchy, unlike other mercerized cotton shirts. If that’s not enough of a draw for $84 — which it should be! — know that these shirts are made in small quantities and offer a reliable change of pace from a classic chambray shirt or a blue Oxford. Oh, and you can wear ’em just about any other time of the year, too. For now, rock it with dark blue denim and brown leather Chelsea boots. Then, layer it under a navy crewneck sweater with your favorite slim chinos (and those same Chelsea boots) as it gets chillier this fall. Just when you thought you didn’t need another pair of denim, along comes Mott & Bow with another must-have release. From the brand’s luxurious Italian-made denim to styles like its rough-and-tumble Norfolk Raw Denim and seasonal favorites like the lightwash Ludlow, they keep finding new ways to add more stretch, comfort and style to your denim game. That goes for the styles they stock over at Huckberry, and so it goes with the latest release on the docket from the fast-growing company — the ultra-dark and ultra-cool Slim Morton Denim. Black denim can be a bit underrated when it comes to matters of style — that is, everyone reaches for a pair of classic dark blue denim on the daily, yet black denim can sometimes get pushed aside. Make no mistake, it’s just as fun to wear, and nearly just as versatile — in fact, some might argue that a deep black jean is the dressiest style of denim you can wear. For the not-outrageous $128 price tag for the Mott & Bow Slim Morton, that’s not a bad thing at all. The dark color plays nicely off everything from a lightweight blue blazer at the office to a classic white Oxford worn untucked for casual-yet-polished (and decidedly minimal) feel on the weekends. Of course, it’s also the most “rock-ready” jean on the market — black denim is a solid choice when it comes to what you should wear to your next rock concert, especially if you rock ’em underneath a slim grey pocket tee and a classic leather jacket. Just don’t go too far down that lane when it comes to fit — although they’re also available in a Skinny fit (and a still-tailored Straight leg), Slim is probably going to be the way to go for most of us fellas out there.

And with a polished fit any way you slice it, there’s little these jeans can’t do. That goes for pairing up with fall style staples like a slim Taylor Stitch flannel shirt or a crisp blue Todd Shelton chambray shirt. Wear either of those on their own, or pair up the ensemble with a made-in-America Pistol Lake henley for an extra dash of rugged appeal. The positives of these easily wearable jeans don’t stop at looks, though. In fact, looks are just an added bonus when you consider the extreme comfort and quality with which this denim is made. They’re made with four-way stretch technology and an astonishing 26 percent stretch — yes, 26 percent! That’s quite a step up from the helpful and comfortable two percent elastane found in the denim brand’s other wares, and it should make them ideal for lots of extended wear — be it at the office from 9 to 5 and beyond, or out on the road as you travel in style. And about that slick black colorway  — it comes from a no-fade fabric, so that means you won’t lose any color as you wear these jeans over and over … and over. As has always been the case with Mott & Bow, you won’t find a better, more wearable or more comfortable jean — and at a time when black denim can take a backseat to the classics, having a premium pair in your rotation has never looked (or felt) better.

If you’ve got a weekly style rotation down, there’s a good chance you might still be missing an item or two — particularly on your wrist. Those small finishing details can sometimes be the hardest to pin down, but once you do — there’s no going back. Now, your author absolutely loves a sharp, stylish timepiece, but sometimes, it can be tough to find a watch that does both. Particularly if you’re working on building out a watch collection, it can be hard work to find one that mixes a touch of refinement with casual style. Well, my fellow #menswear fans — those days are over, thanks to the excellent folks at Jack Mason. The Texas-based brand takes a nuanced approach to crafting stylish watches — the brand’s Texas roots add a touch of Americana to every product — and I’m very glad indeed I stumbled upon them at Liberty Fairs in Las Vegas earlier this summer. I’ve had the chance to check out the brand’s handiwork over the past few weeks — including during a very recent Labor Day weekend road trip — and that brings us here today. Specifically, we’re talking today about the Nautical 3-Hand Watch, a stunner of a timepiece that merges texture (the perlon strap), functionality (a given) and sharp style. Now, the timepiece seen at the top of the page is a sharp play on the style in a heightened blue, but the slightly more casual black version as sold by the fine folks at Huckberry would definitely be a stylish pick-up., too. Why’s that? Well, as we talked before, it nicely blends the look of a dress watch with the casual ease of your new favorite weekend watch — the woven perlon strap and the sporty dial just play well off one another, and that makes it a great option to pair with laidback-yet-sharp style staples, like a crisp white Oxford and rich garment-dyed chinos (as seen at the top of the page; in fact, head to my Instagram to get more watch-centric styling tips — will ya?).

It’s not often that you find watches that manage to look distinctive yet subtle, yet the Nautical 3-Hand Watch is that very timepiece. The 42mm case diameter is just about the right size for most of us fellas, and that makes it a bit more substantial and easier to wear than a slimmer dress watch. And for under $200, you’re essentially getting multiple watches — the easily interchangeable woven strap could be swapped out very quickly for another NATO strap or perhaps a rich Horween leather strap. That kind of versatility is important when watch shopping, and it should make it easier to wear with everything from a sharp business-casual look to a laidback outfit put together with bar-hopping in mind (seriously, you’ve gotta tell time on a bar crawl somehow).  And lest you think the woven strap and nautical dial  of the Nautical 3-Hand Watch make it a timepiece that only works in spring and summer, think again. The perlon strap adds just enough texture to make this timepiece a fall (and potentially) winter workhorse. Again, that versatility and functionality simply can’t be beat. If that’s a goal of yours when watch shopping — as it should be — your search might be over (for now, that is).

There are brands that almost make it ridiculously easy to get all your shopping done in one place — if you read The Style Guide, you know that Taylor Stitch is definitely one such brand.  It seems that just about anything you need on the #menswear front can be fulfilled by the brand — that goes for things like essential chambray shirting, classic men’s chinos made from durable fabric, and a drool-worthy leather jacket or two, and it’s particularly evident during times best suited to rugged gear (like fall). If you thought you couldn’t possibly need another reason to shop at Taylor Stitch, think again. What’s a guy to do when he feels like he’s got the basics covered? We’re talking classic pieces you can rotate in and out, and wear every day. In the footwear game, that could mean everything from leather loafers for spring to classic white sneakers to durable fall boots. Every once in a while though, you get the itch to switch things up a bit — but not too much. That’s where a collaboration effort that’s at once classic and style-forward makes perfect sense. And that’s where today’s Style Pick comes from — the Reebok x JackThreads Daily Classic Nylon is firing on all cylinders; believe me, these sneakers are certainly worth your time.  Although some aren’t into the retro style of these kicks, there’s no question that as far as trends go, this silhouette manages to be of-the-moment without going too far off the beaten path (that’s why they’re a good pick to switch up your footwear closet). The overall feel and look is sleek and well-composed. Both Reebok and JackThreads have teamed up admirably on a stylish runner that blends premium pigskin suede with rich leather accents and a durable nylon upper — the combination is pleasing to the eye, and quite high-quality. And for just $75, you’re getting a heck of a sneaker.

Either the White or Collegiate Navy option are going to take care of business for you — after checking out the White pair for just over a week now, they’re a winning pick in my book. In fact, they worked very well on a trip back to Michigan when paired with a slub polo and shorts, yet they also would’ve stylishly complemented some slim sand chinos I brought with me. And that attention to detail in design & execution extends to the small touches that make these kicks unique to JackThreads — we’re talking orange-tipped laces, an orange shoe lining and an orange outsole on the navy pair. Despite those pops of color, these shoes aren’t too ostentatious at all — the retro silhouette manages to feel streamlined and understated. Even when worn for long periods of time, these sneakers feel comfortable and bounce back nicely. If properly cared for with the right suede-cleaning tools and other spot touch-ups, they could reliably work in spring, summer and early fall. The versatility is such that you could try pairing them with, say dark khaki corduroys (almost sold out now, but sure to be restocked soon!) and a classic crewneck sweater when it gets a bit chilly in early fall. And right now, you should definitely break them out with everything from slim chino shorts to light wash denim. The only doubts you should have are whether to buy these in White, Navy — or both.

With so many hot, hot days rolling through August, it can be pretty difficult to figure out what to wear. At least in NYC, there’ve been times these past few weeks where it’s only suitable for a tank top and shorts. But what’s a guy to do when he wants to look sharp and presentable in the heat — yet maybe still wearing shorts? Easy. I present to you the OLIVERS Capital Short.  Although there’s not that much time left in August — and we’ll soon be into fall — it still pays to figure out ways to stay cool and look sharp no matter how hot it gets. I learned that all too well this past week, as I headed out to Las Vegas for three days of the renowned Liberty Fairs menswear trade show. It was fun, it was hectic and it was, needless to say, very hot. Thankfully, the OLIVERS Capital Short worked out more than fine for a long day of travel on Sunday, and navigating the city thereafter. Of course, that made ’em more than worthy of inclusion as this week’s Style Pick of the Week — and that makes ’em more than worthy of your hard-earned dollars and time. More often than not, you need pieces that work with you, and move with you, in the heat. That’s where the OLIVERS Capital Short is so impressive. And if you’re not familiar, I’d suggest you acquaint yourself accordingly.

The brand has built a following for the way they blend technical fabrics — like the nylon-polyester  blend of the Capital Short — with tailored silhouettes fit for the modern man. If you’ve been paying any attention to your television or the Internet across the past week, you’ll know the Rio Olympics are well underway. They’ve given us a bunch of gold medals for the U.S., and a seriously large amount of Michael Phelps face memes (that’s the last you’ll read of it, sorry). Even yours truly at The Style Guide published a post on what to wear to watch the Olympics. Well, there’s still plenty more where that came from — and the best part about this week’s Style Pick? You can use it all year-round. Yes indeed, the Jack + Mulligan Ali Duffel is your answer to quite a few different questions. Namely, where can I find a gym bag that actually looks good? Maybe one that’s not too bulky, either? Truly, the stylish gym bag is an underrated style upgrade you should definitely consider making, and the fact that this option’s got patriotic roots only helps during this time of year (the $115 price tag isn’t too bad, either). The bag is named for the great boxer and Olympic gold medalist himself (that would be Muhammad Ali, folks), and it’s part of Jack + Mulligan’s “Pursuit of Greatness” capsule collection. The water-repellent canvas body is stylishly offset by what’s truly a sporty blue colorblock on the bottom panel, plus fittingly American red-striped handles made from sturdy cotton.  Right down to the blue water-resistant nylon lining, the whole combination is old-school yet crisp. It’s the kind of bag that might stylishly complement something like a rugged-refined Todd Snyder graphic T-shirt as part of a casual off-duty look. And when you do take it to hit the gym, it’s going to stand out subtly and stylishly — no garish athletic logos or overly padded shoulder strap here. The entire combination is surprisingly sharp, and the patriotic look and feel of the moment means there’s no better time to buy it. If you’re heading to an Olympics viewing party, it’s a neat way to lug a few everyday carry essentials (plus a few brews) around — and it can serve the same function the rest o’ the year, as well. If you’re feeling particularly patriotic, you could even grab a Jack + Mulligan U.S.A. Baseball Cap to really complete the look. So you’ve got your slim chinos and your classic white sneakers, but you don’t quite have a shirt to wear with ’em — or do you? The Buck Mason Short-Sleeve Chambray Shirt, my friends, is that shirt — and if that’s not the one, I’d suggest the Buck Mason Oxford. But as to the Short-Sleeve Chambray Shirt: It fits in quite well with the brand’s line of durable, essential basics, which run the course from crisp blue denim to perfectly washed slub tees. And it fits in very well with the sort of menswear you should be looking to rock to finish out summer. We’re talking pieces that can handle a beach walk or a day by the pool, and then drinks out on the town. And we’re talking just as much about pieces that can be fun to wear. If you’re on the hunt for a unique alternative to a classic summer polo or a slim pocket T-shirt, the short-sleeve chambray shirt is the way to go — as  a matter of fact, you can rock the style at least five different ways (wink, wink). The brand’s story began with a conscious decision to return to American manufacturing, and that commitment to quality and effortless style shines through here. While “heritage style” can sometimes have negative connotations (as seemed to be the case after the trend blew up in the mid-2000s), there’s nothing overly costume-y or dated about a very well-fitting, very well-made short-sleeve chambray shirt. Critically, this shirt is made with a lightweight indigo-dyed chambray — that means it’s breathable and moves easier than heavier shirts cut for fall or winter. Another big benefit? It’s made in America, so it’s right in your wheelhouse if you like to know where your #menswear comes from. And although this particular Buck Mason chambray shirt has short sleeves, know that you can still team it up with, say, a lightweight cotton sweater after a day on the water — it’s even better for layering in that regard. But the benefits don’t stop there — it’s got a bit of an edge to it, to the point where it wouldn’t look out of place worn with an iconic jean like the Levi’s 505C at a rock concert. The tricky part is going to be keeping this shirt in your closet once fall and winter really hit — so if you’re blessed enough to live near Buck Mason’s Los Angeles home base, do us all a favor and continue to rock it year-round.

Before we dive into this week’s post, know that the title is no mistake — we’re really talking no-show socks here today. And there’s plenty of good reason for that. It’s the end of July — so it’s plenty hot, and that heat isn’t going anywhere any time soon. If you snagged a pair or two (or heck, three) of no-show socks near the start of summer, you’ve probably been wearing them a lot. After all, they’re an essential to pair up with classic leather sneakers  or even suede Derby shoes beneath your favorite pair of rolled chinos. And if they’ve seen a lot of wear, maybe they could use a refresh. And maybe you want to check out a new, inexpensive and high-performing brand — that’s where the Sock Genius line of socks through Ties.com slides into the equation (and onto your feet). Just like a comfortable and well-fitting pair of boxer briefs or a high-performing undershirt, the basics that are closest to your skin should stand up to the heat of the summer — that’s particularly true when being on your feet during the hot summer months. And whether you’re heading to Sunday brunch or bringing along a cooler to a backyard barbeque, you need no-show socks that can handle a lot. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the variety of Sock Genius options (nearly 20)  combine nice patterns and colors that don’t look bad at all when it’s time to slip off your… slip-on sneakers, ehh?. So, you sidle up to the bar on a Saturday night — maybe on a first date. What are you wearing? A polo inspired by the crisp, clean, effortlessly cool style of 007, that’s what. My friends, we’re talking today about the Mack Weldon Vesper Polo, a heck of a polo that puts together the favorite style principles of 007 in one shirt. It doesn’t hurt that it’s named for the original (and perhaps best-known) drink downed by everyone’s favorite secret agent. The Vesper Polo nails everything you should look for in a stylish polo for summer — it’s got a clean, modern fit, for starters. And the lightweight micro-mesh knit fabric is exactly what you need to keep you cool and dry in the heat of July (we’ll have an #OOTD styling this exact polo next week, in fact). After checking one out myself during a hot and busy #NYFWM, I’ve got to vouch for that. Yet, the great thing about the Vesper Polo is that it’s a great place to start no matter your style level. Seriously, every guy can use reminders about things like proper fit, and this polo makes it easy. It’s wearable with slim shorts or tan chinos, and it doesn’t look out of place when worn in an even more laidback fashion — like atop your favorite swim trunks as you head to the beach or pool. And the self-collar doesn’t flop around like other polo collars — it’ll stay upright through the day (even moreso if you use collar stays), so you can rock it beneath a slim-fit khaki blazer to the office. The trickiest part about the whole endeavor might be picking a favorite color — the Kentucky Blue option seen here is reliable and crisp, yet that Total Eclipse Blue (a dark navy, really) is the same color favored by Bond in Casino Royale (although that option is a bit pricier). So you certainly can’t go wrong with a well-priced, well-performing, effortlessly stylish polo ready for the rest of summer (and even able to be rocked into early fall when layered under a shawl cardigan, for example. The toughest part is going to be putting it away when the weather turns cold — yet if you live in a warm climate, you’ll have the gift that keeps on giving year-round. Keep it handy for that next date in the meantime, yeah?
