We all love a great pair of classic dark denim, right? Surely, it’s fun to switch up your denim wardrobe with slim white jeans during the warmer months, but there’s something about the changing of the leaves — any day now — that calls to mind the desire with more rugged style in mind. That starts from the ground up with tough leather boots, and it carries through to a #menswear staple that can seem intimidating at first — selvedge denim. There’s a whole lexicon and a significant subset of the digital menswear community that reveres this type of jean, and with good reason. It’s made with more attention to detail and skill than non-selvedge denim, as it’s constructed with the ‘self-edge’ (outer) part of the fabric — creating the distinctive detailing on the inside of the outseam. It’s prized for its durability, toughness and plain cool looks — plus, who doesn’t love to cuff a pair of selvedge denim over broken-in leather boots? So, that’s a little history for you. What makes it better than plain dark denim? It’s a matter of preference, to be sure — but the sturdier weight and feel of selvedge helps it break in over time, last longer and create some very neat selvedge denim fades. Again, that heavier construction lends itself perfectly to fall and winter — particularly with pairings like a shawl cardigan and a classic chambray shirt. With that being said, where to begin? Tracking down great selvedge denim can be tough if you’re just starting your search — it’s helpful, then, that Raleigh Denim Workshop does such a great job crafting slim, stylish denim right here in America. The fact that they’ve got other stylish men’s denim options available via East Dane is a bonus if you’re deep into denim shopping, too. While the Jones Slim 211 Selvedge (which you can also find via Raleigh Denim) are a bit pricey, the quality, durability and longevity are absolutely on-point. They’re about as classic a pair of selvedge as you can get, right down to the red chainstitched hem, the textured white weft fabric that’ll break in over time.

Where else to start in your search for stylish selvedge denim but Levi’s? The Levi’s Red Tab denim line is a premium take on the brand’s classic styles, yet you still get the excellent fit, comfort and quality for which the brand is known. The 511 is a, you might say, a classic jean around The Style Guide for its slim fit and reliable durability, so upgrading to a sleek selvedge pair is only a logical next step. Black selvedge might seem out of left field at first, but know that if you only have to buy one pair of black denim, this is as good a place to start as any.

The hunt for sturdy, tough selvedge denim can take you high and low — that goes for the price, as well. Luckily, Flint & Tinder has done a stellar job on its new fall menswear line, from its easily wearable marled henleys to pieces like the handsome-looking All-American Slim Tapered Jeans. For starting out making boxer briefs and hoodies, the expansion of the line is an admirable one, and it means you could get dressed head-to-toe in Flint & Tinder (including the brand’s Inventor Socks, of course). This pair of selvedge should last and last while teaming with other stylish Huckberry essentials — if you’ve got a fall wish list going, that’s a very good thing indeed.

You know a jean has some cache in the marketplace when it’s named using letters and numbers — much like the brand 3Sixteen itself, as it were. They’ve developed a cult following for their ridiculous level of attention to detail, dependability and style (let’s not forget style). Now, it’s certainly open to debate as to the “must-buy” pair of denim from 3Sixteen (plenty also like the CT-220x), but the CT-101x has gotta be high on that list. It’s got a higher rise yet a tapered cut — that means a fit and feel that’s a little more old-school. The denim should still be a reliable pick to wear all kinds of places, including to your next rock concert with your favorite pair of leather boots (once you break the denim in a bit).

The thing about denim shopping is that, of course, it’s all about fit. Not every guy can slip into the Levi’s Red Tab 511 or something similar. J. Crew helpfully recognized that last fall, and introduced a better-fitting addition to its denim line — the J. Crew 770, a jean built with the athletic-minded guy in mind. They feature an excellent deep blue resin rinse, signature selvedge detailing and fit that offers more room to move in the seat and thigh. If that checks all your denim shopping boxes, toss these jeans in your cart. This is a pair of denim that’ll fit in at your next football tailgate or at the office when paired with a fall blazer.

#OOTD: How to Wear a Bomber Jacket This Season

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

Ahh, yes. The classic bomber jacket. A men’s style staple that’s experienced a huge resurgence in recent years, in part thanks to certain, ahem, celebrities (Mr. Kanye West among them). But how do you take a style that’s seen on the runways and boil it down to an essential, easily wearable outfit? A solid menswear #OOTD, if you will? That’s why we’re here today at The Style Guide, and after you read the below, your questions will all be answered (hopefully). The key with looking at a major trend sometimes isn’t too follow it exactly — that is to say, you can buy that Alpha Industries bomber jacket, but maybe (no, definitely) switch it up from how Yeezy wears it. In this case, we’re working with a different bomber jacket entirely, and classic style staples like a slim chambray shirt and … well, we’ll leave that to the imagination for now. The olive color is neutral and yet still a change of pace from navy or that military green typically seen on bomber jackets, and the front snap hip pockets and stand-up collar are neat design touches, too.

The Chambray Shirt: JackThreads Chambray Workshirt, $49 — The great thing about starting an outfit with a neutral bomber jacket is that any classic chambray shirt in your arsenal would work — yet this neat patterned workshirt offers a heftier weight for fall, plus a pattern that’s just different enough.

Surprised? Don’t be — these are a reliable, stylish high-top sneaker pick for the season ahead.

The Socks: ICNY Half-Calf Gradient Socks, $13.98 — Sometimes, you just need simple, straightforward socks that offer neutral color, comfort and performance. You get all that with this pair for a pretty decent price, and the fact that the fine folks at Huckberry sell ’em is a positive.

The Watch: MVMT Watches The 40 in Rose Gold/Natural Leather, $120 — Since when can you get a crisp, versatile watch fit for both casual and dress situation? At a low price, to boot? Since MVMT Watches started making ’em, that’s when. The case diameter is just right, and the look is crisp and clean for just over $100.

The Belt: Tanner Goods Classic Belt in Hickory, $99.98 — Looking for an investment-worthy belt that’ll break in beautifully and offer a rich accent to dressy and casual outfits? Here it is.

If the below #OOTD feels a bit too casual for you with those sneakers, swap them out for a pair of stylish men’s dress shoes (casual wingtips are a nice way to go), or heck, keep the sneakers and add a navy knit tie to wear this to the office. This sort of casual yet put-together look might be best for a  weekend coffee run or, dare I say it … Sunday brunch. And since it’s a midweight approach to wearing a bomber jacket — note the lack of a heavy hoodie, a la Kanye — it should work in the early fall or spring in the right conditions. We’re slowly (but surely) creeping toward fall — it seems like that’s been the case for a couple of weeks here at The Style Guide, but it’s certainly no more true than right now. Dressing for football season has started, there’s a bunch of great new music out — that signals tons of fall tours and rock concert style — and it’s high time to, well, get with the times. So, grab your fall style wish list and get hip to the scene. Even if it takes a while to get chilly, you’ll still want to have the proper gear on hand when it does. I know temperatures have been high here in NYC, but I’m definitely anxiously awaiting fall. For all of you loyal Style Guide readers (I know you’re out there), it signifies a really fun time of year in terms of menswear. If you’re one who tends to get sick of the oppressive heat — and even tires of heading to the beach — it can be a welcome change of pace to throw on heavier layers and incorporate durable texture into your #menswear ensemble again. And being able to play around with deep fall colors and textures — as some of the picks do below — is another reliable signifier that the season is changing. Everywhere you look, it’s about that time. Wthout further ado, here’s a look at how to dress for fall. You feel a crisp breeze in the air, but a lightweight spring jacket won’t cut — and it’s not heavy winter topcoat time, either. What’s your reliable go-between? A cotton canvas coat in a rich shade that’s perfectly primed for fall. Although the interior of this jacket is lined with a neat striped cotton, it should prove reliable and not too heavy for layering. Details like the front patch pockets call to mind workwear of days past, and the rich Bandolier Brown color is going to handsomely offset the blues in the rest of this ensemble (although we don’t want to give too much away yet).

For fans of versatile, timeless style, that’s very much a positive. These jeans are every bit an essential pair of fall denim, made from 12oz. Cone Mills fabric and featuring one percent of stretch  — that touch will make it easier to wear ’em on fall hikes or walks in the park. The slim fit is a must-have these days, although the brand’s waist sizing does go up to 40. Grab one pair of these, wear the heck out of them and watch them tell the story of a great fall season.

Since when does JackThreads make footwear? Since this season, that’s when. It’s part of the brand’s mission to expand on its stellar menswear line and take up some serious real estate in your closet. When they’re able to churn out crisp pieces like these refined Chelsea boots for just a shade over $100, that’s very agreeable. A stylish Chelsea boot works nearly any time of year, yet they seem particularly fitting for fall. They’re not nearly as clunky as some thick winter boots, and they feel especially sleek alongside slim denim and a chambray shirt (some stylish leather chukka boots could also work here, though).

The Socks: Mack Weldon Everyday Striped Socks — $14.50

The folks at Mack Weldon are consistently churning out everyday basics that’ll have you covered from the ground up, from its Vesper Polo to pieces like its Merino Long-Sleeve Tee, and if you read this blog as much as I think you should, you’re well-acquainted with those pieces (wink, wink). So, it only makes sense that you should round out your wardrobe with some striped Mack Weldon socks that add a nice bit of color contrast to the deep blues and browns of this outfit. Ya feel me?

Are you familiar with MVMT Watches? If not, you definitely should be. That is, if you’re a fan of stylish, affordable eye-catching watches — and who isn’t? There are some watches that are so refined in their design, you can wear them more casually — that’s certainly the case with this MVMT Watches timepiece, crafted from a rich brown leather-brown dial-rose gold case combo that’s a heck of a looker. It’s a way to offset some of the more rugged pieces in this outfit, like the canvas coat and chambray shirt. More importantly, it’s dressy enough to wear later on this season with, dare I say, the Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit?

This suede belt first made an appearance in this site’s suggestion on how to dress for a football game, and it’s back here and adding a change of pace to this outfit in the process. The look is already quite heavy on rugged style, to be sure, so it’s fitting that a suede belt comes into play. Fall is the perfect time to try out texture where you might not do so normally, and for more than $50, you better get a lot of wear out of this belt to justify the initial price (although this particular pick is suede, a handsome leather belt like the Tanner Goods Classic Belt would work, too).

Wait a second — MVMT Watches does sunglasses? Yes, they sure do. And why do we have sunglasses in this post? Well, as this is transitional style and all, it’s still going to be a bit sunny out there most days, whether you’re taking a hike through a park, heading to a bar crawl or taking in that football game. These sunglasses aren’t too precious to take a beating, and more importantly, they’ve got a distinct air of retro cool about them. Just like the watch, they’re perfect to pair with everything from that Taylor Stitch chambray shirt to … wait for it… the decidedly modern Taylor Stitch Telegraph Suit.

And there you have it, folks — pick up one, all (or heck, none?) of the above items and prep for fall in style. As we always aim for at this #menswear blog, reaching for pieces that are going to have your back the rest of the year is a solid bet no matter the season. And if given the chance to wear a durable chambray shirt with a crisp canvas coat, take it. The combo is just the right amount of rugged with venturing too far off the beaten path, and pieces like slim, dark denim and brown leather Chelsea boots keep things modern. A refined watch and cool-as-heck sunglasses are items every guy needs, yet not every guy has — except you. And you can never go wrong with accessories from staple players like Mack Weldon and J. Crew. Head-to-toe, there might not be a better time to be a style fan — and that’s what makes fall menswear so great.

Style Pick of the Week: Mott & Bow Morton Denim

Just when you thought you didn’t need another pair of denim, along comes Mott & Bow with another must-have release. From the brand’s luxurious Italian-made denim to styles like its rough-and-tumble Norfolk Raw Denim and seasonal favorites like the lightwash Ludlow, they keep finding new ways to add more stretch, comfort and style to your denim game. That goes for the styles they stock over at Huckberry, and so it goes with the latest release on the docket from the fast-growing company — the ultra-dark and ultra-cool Slim Morton Denim. Black denim can be a bit underrated when it comes to matters of style — that is, everyone reaches for a pair of classic dark blue denim on the daily, yet black denim can sometimes get pushed aside. Make no mistake, it’s just as fun to wear, and nearly just as versatile — in fact, some might argue that a deep black jean is the dressiest style of denim you can wear. For the not-outrageous $128 price tag for the Mott & Bow Slim Morton, that’s not a bad thing at all. The dark color plays nicely off everything from a lightweight blue blazer at the office to a classic white Oxford worn untucked for casual-yet-polished (and decidedly minimal) feel on the weekends. Of course, it’s also the most “rock-ready” jean on the market — black denim is a solid choice when it comes to what you should wear to your next rock concert, especially if you rock ’em underneath a slim grey pocket tee and a classic leather jacket. Just don’t go too far down that lane when it comes to fit — although they’re also available in a Skinny fit (and a still-tailored Straight leg), Slim is probably going to be the way to go for most of us fellas out there.

And with a polished fit any way you slice it, there’s little these jeans can’t do. That goes for pairing up with fall style staples like a slim Taylor Stitch flannel shirt or a crisp blue Todd Shelton chambray shirt. Wear either of those on their own, or pair up the ensemble with a made-in-America Pistol Lake henley for an extra dash of rugged appeal. The positives of these easily wearable jeans don’t stop at looks, though. In fact, looks are just an added bonus when you consider the extreme comfort and quality with which this denim is made. They’re made with four-way stretch technology and an astonishing 26 percent stretch — yes, 26 percent! That’s quite a step up from the helpful and comfortable two percent elastane found in the denim brand’s other wares, and it should make them ideal for lots of extended wear — be it at the office from 9 to 5 and beyond, or out on the road as you travel in style. And about that slick black colorway  — it comes from a no-fade fabric, so that means you won’t lose any color as you wear these jeans over and over … and over. As has always been the case with Mott & Bow, you won’t find a better, more wearable or more comfortable jean — and at a time when black denim can take a backseat to the classics, having a premium pair in your rotation has never looked (or felt) better.

The Friday Read: New York Fashion Week, Sunlit Youth and Fall Style Wishes

As every week draws to a close, it’s pretty fun to carve out some time to write these posts — sometimes, that time is pretty short (those Effortless Gent features don’t write themselves), and other times, there’s a bit more room for introspection. I often like to put on some music as I write, and for about the past week, that’s consisted of “Sunlit Youth,” the fantastic new album from the fantastic indie rock band Local Natives. But what’s that got to do with menswear, you might ask? Well, those guys dress in laidback, minimal California cool garb, for one (wink, wink). And number two — well, it’s just a plain beautiful record, and it’s got me looking forward to a Northeast trip to see their Providence show, wherein we’ll have a full travel style post next month. See, there’s the tie-in! At any rate, records like that are works of art, and worth your time, too — much like some excellent menswear, yes? And it’s music that’s so far colored my week — for the better, by far (personal favorites include the soaring “Past Lives,” the hopeful and lilting “Coins” and the determined drive of tracks like “Psycho Lovers” and “Mother Emanuel”). But again, I’m just one guy. If you fancy spinning that record while you catch up on the below men’s style stories, give it a go. I guarantee it’ll be a perfect start to your weekend.

So it’s not exactly the middle of summer anymore, is it? That’s a strange sensation if you’ve been used to dressing for the heat or packing up stylish beach gear. But if  you’re anything like this #menswear writer, you relish the chance to dress for seasonal transitions and break out some of your favorite seasonal style staples. We’re talking pieces that are rugged and refined, ready for casual wear or able to be worn with a bit more tailored style in mind. And in the case of this week’s #OOTD, we’re looking at an outstanding piece for a seasonal transition — the ever-reliable slim long-sleeve henley.  With its athletic-minded origins and rugged good looks, a great henley certainly works in the summer as well as the in-between period between summer and fall. If you’ve got a weekly style rotation down, there’s a good chance you might still be missing an item or two — particularly on your wrist. Those small finishing details can sometimes be the hardest to pin down, but once you do — there’s no going back. Now, your author absolutely loves a sharp, stylish timepiece, but sometimes, it can be tough to find a watch that does both. Particularly if you’re working on building out a watch collection, it can be hard work to find one that mixes a touch of refinement with casual style. Well, my fellow #menswear fans — those days are over, thanks to the excellent folks at Jack Mason. The Texas-based brand takes a nuanced approach to crafting stylish watches — the brand’s Texas roots add a touch of Americana to every product — and I’m very glad indeed I stumbled upon them at Liberty Fairs in Las Vegas earlier this summer. I’ve had the chance to check out the brand’s handiwork over the past few weeks — including during a very recent Labor Day weekend road trip — and that brings us here today. Specifically, we’re talking today about the Nautical 3-Hand Watch, a stunner of a timepiece that merges texture (the perlon strap), functionality (a given) and sharp style. Now, the timepiece seen at the top of the page is a sharp play on the style in a heightened blue, but the slightly more casual black version as sold by the fine folks at Huckberry would definitely be a stylish pick-up., too. Why’s that? Well, as we talked before, it nicely blends the look of a dress watch with the casual ease of your new favorite weekend watch — the woven perlon strap and the sporty dial just play well off one another, and that makes it a great option to pair with laidback-yet-sharp style staples, like a crisp white Oxford and rich garment-dyed chinos (as seen at the top of the page; in fact, head to my Instagram to get more watch-centric styling tips — will ya?).

It’s not often that you find watches that manage to look distinctive yet subtle, yet the Nautical 3-Hand Watch is that very timepiece. The 42mm case diameter is just about the right size for most of us fellas, and that makes it a bit more substantial and easier to wear than a slimmer dress watch. And for under $200, you’re essentially getting multiple watches — the easily interchangeable woven strap could be swapped out very quickly for another NATO strap or perhaps a rich Horween leather strap. That kind of versatility is important when watch shopping, and it should make it easier to wear with everything from a sharp business-casual look to a laidback outfit put together with bar-hopping in mind (seriously, you’ve gotta tell time on a bar crawl somehow).  And lest you think the woven strap and nautical dial  of the Nautical 3-Hand Watch make it a timepiece that only works in spring and summer, think again. The perlon strap adds just enough texture to make this timepiece a fall (and potentially) winter workhorse. Again, that versatility and functionality simply can’t be beat. If that’s a goal of yours when watch shopping — as it should be — your search might be over (for now, that is).

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Football Season

Sometimes, you can feel it in the air before you actually see it — maybe you bolt out of bed on a Saturday morning thinking it’s game day (just me?), or get your old (or current) school fight song stuck in your head one day. It’s nearly back … football season, folks. The fall and the start of football season has always been one of my favorite times of year — growing up about fifteen minutes from the campus of Michigan State University turned me into a football fanatic at a very young age. That dedication only continued through college; heck, you could hear the roar of the crowd at Spartan Stadium from my college house. So as the calendar rolls toward fall once again, I’m focused on getting back to see my beloved Spartans — and I’m focused a little bit more on upping my #menswear game for the occasion than when I was in school. Now, that goes for you pro football fans, too — but sadly, the Detroit Lions were never anything to write home about. As we always talk about at ye olde Style Guide, there are plenty of ways to get dressed with style upgrades in mind, and that goes for situations that might seem more casual or mundane. Just as with watching the Olympics or heading to a bar crawl, dressing for a football game is definitely there. From your garb up top to your everyday carry, you might be surprised at how many brands are approaching sports-related activities with neat stylistic touches in mind. Looking for yet another way to differentiate yourself from the pack? Whereas some other folks might reach for baggy, distressed denim — maybe featuring a bootcut — a pair of crisp, clean and simple dark denim is the way to go here. Mott & Bow’s Norfolk Raw Denim was launched late last year as the brand’s first foray into raw denim, and this writer’s pair has broken in very nicely. Contrary to what you might think, this denim isn’t overly heavy, and doesn’t wear too stiff right out of the box. That means they’d be a solid pick to wear now, and keep on wearing if (or when) it gets cold out. Like the above henley, they can also function during your 9-to-5. Not bad at all, yeah?

If that price catches you by surprise initially, not to worry — the Barry Chukka is nearly a four-season pair of footwear that packs in waterproof protection with a versatile  silhouette. As far as chukka boots go, they’ve got the potential to be worn in the heat of September (thanks to the lightweight crepe sole) and deep into tailgating season this November. Then, you can break them back out in the spring. Think of these stylish chukka boots as a decided upgrade over athletic sneakers — they’re sleeker, cleaner, more versatile and ready for just about anything (including post-victory bar-hopping).

The navy color is simple and straightforward — no zany colors or patterns here, so the socks won’t distract from your T-shirt. Plus, they’re definitely made with more care than a pair of garish team socks, and I’d bet those results will show up on the scoreboard, too (wink, wink).

Now, if wearing both a team watch and a team T-shirt feels a bit like overkill, you could always reach for a rugged dive watch. But know that the way Jack Mason makes its collegiate watches, these aren’t flimsy or unrefined by any means. Essentially, styles like the Blackout Silicone Strap Watch you see here are just tough watches made for the everyday and spruced up with the logo of your favorite school. When you look at that way, it’s tough not to buy into this unique, well, style upgrade. If we’re being honest, most folks probably aren’t giving a second thought to what they were to the game besides an athletic jersey, so putting some thought into a good-quality, versatile belt might not mean much at a tailgate. But if you’re on a mission to out-dress that pesky Michigan fan (as we all should be), then a good belt is just the type of thing to spend a little time on. Crucially, this J. Crew suede belt falls in the same color family as the SWIMS chukka boots seen above, and it’s the perfect color and texture to wear with other fall business-casual outfits the rest of the week. It doesn’t exactly match up in terms of color with the watch, but as we’re mixing a rubber watch and a leather belt, matching isn’t of the utmost importance. Now, catching the snap — that’s much more important.

Again, a  ballcap is one of those things most of us throw on and don’t think about. And there are certainly ways to support your team and nod toward the ol’ ballgame without throwing on a coach’s headset. A simple, monochrome ballcap with vintage-inspired roots (it’s made by the folks at Ebbets Field Flannels) is a step in the right direction if you can’t part with your old college ballcap. Believe me, this writer loves a good hat as much as the next guy. This one is also the kind of cap you can throw on to run a few errands on a weekend morning — you know, things like picking up a six-pack (or three) before your tailgate.

OK, so perhaps a growler bag isn’t a must-have (particularly if you’re not the type to imbibe). But if you enjoy a great craft brew — perhaps from a fine brewery near the Grand Rapids shop of Brothers Leather — then this growler is something you oughta pick up. It’s made from full-grain finished Vachetta tanned leather, which is enough to boggle your fellow tailgate-goer before you even pour them a beer. The 36-inch strap is a functional touch for lugging this thing around — the only thing missing is some stellar craft beer.

Even though it might seem a bit tedious to put that extra bit of effort into your appearance on a weekend day, it definitely pays off. It’s something I still struggle with from time to time, but finding the right pieces can make the experience a heck of a lot better. The search for that perfectly worn vintage tee hopefully is a bit easier now after checking out Tailgate Clothing, and stylish everyday carry pieces like an upgrade team watch and a vintage ballcap are subtle, sporty-yet-stylish ways to prep for the occasion. Crucially, waterproof nubuck chukka boots and slim, dark denim are great building blocks for any outfit. And if you pack well (I.e. #OOTD: How to Dress for A Rock Concert

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

Chances are, we’ve all got certain style scenarios throughout the week we have to tackle — be it dressing for a laidback office or a laidback summer weekend, there’s a multitude of conundrums (and opportunities!) to navigate in any given week. If you enjoy live music — as I very much do — you might also find yourself attending a show or two … or three. Heck, from the 2016 Panorama music festival to Governors Ball to an upstate trip to see Lucius, I love it all, and I get out and about to shows quite a bit. If you read this blog, you certainly know that; maybe you’ve even tackled a similar scenario, such as how to dress for a summer music festival. However, non-festival settings are a different animal entirely. We’re usually talking an indoor venue, a more compact crowd, and possibly time spent waiting in line outside. So, what are you going to wear? And namely, what’s a combination that might hold up alright at the office and then heading to the show itself? This is one of the essential questions in life (wink, wink) and it’s the one we’re going to answer below. As yours truly likes to drive home, looking for ways to improve — and maintain — your style comes down to always seizing the chance to do a little bit extra when it comes to getting dressed. That’s where style upgrades come into play, even off the clock. The Jacket: Abercrombie & Fitch M-65 Military Jacket, $150 –The (somewhat) new and very improved Abercrombie & Fitch is keeping that roll going into the fall season with pieces like this timeless, sharp and versatile field jacket. It works just as well over a knit tie with a blue Oxford as it does with this outfit’s other pieces.

As you can see in the #OOTD above, the small style details matter, from the cut of your shirt to the color of your socks — and they can be merged into one functional outfit that’s fit for something as unique as a rock concert. Those suede Chelsea boots that you might pair with a business-casual look will fit right in as you jockey for a front-row spot (or a spot at the bar). Pieces like a navy military jacket and a chambray shirt are multi-season essentials that work particularly well for transitioning from location to location — indoors or outdoors. The military jacket is rugged yet sharp when paired up with that crisp blue short-sleeve chambray shirt. And while black denim might feel a touch rebellious, a clean wash in a dark color is certainly as concert-ready  as durable pair of inky blue denim. It’s no surprise that given how much I’ve been on the road in the past month, the summer came to quite the quick end. But that didn’t stop me from squeezing in one last long weekend of fun before summer (technically) drew to a close. Just a few days after I returned from a summer vacation in Florida, I set my sights on having some fun over the long holiday weekend — as I did for a Memorial Day weekend road trip to kick off the summer. Perhaps you also hit the road, if only for a day or two. That was the case for me, as I took full advantage of a day off on Monday and used the rest of the weekend to hit up everything from my favorite #menswear shops in NYC to the stylish, up-and-coming locale of Asbury Park (all the way down in New Jersey) on a fine September Saturday. And lest we forget, it was a boisterous opening weekend in college football — and that brought with it the chance to cheer on my Michigan State Spartans in style (as you can see below). The weekend started slightly earlier than normal thanks to my day job’s advantageous Summer Friday policy — gotta love a few extra hours off. That meant I had plenty of time to rest up for a night of cheering on my alma mater, Michigan State, as they kicked off what should be an excellent college football season with a solid (not stellar) win against Furman. I had some help from my friends at Tailgate Clothing and Jack Mason, who were kind enough to hook me up with team-appropriate gear for the occasion. Both available for great deals, I’d seriously recommend the excellent Michigan State Spartans T-shirt and the Blackout Silicone Strap Watch seen above if you happen to be a Spartan fan — and if not, either brand stocks a bevy of stylish college gear made with everyday good looks in mind. I complemented those new favorites with another style staple, my reliable-as-ever Mott & Bow Slim Mercer Light Denim; it’s a perfect change of pace from trusty dark denim. On the footwear front, the SeaVees Army Issue Sneaker (sold out in White but available in a similarly neutral Olive) was comfortable, effective and appropriate in terms of color (Go White, am I right?). Although I’ll have to add a few layers as the weather gets colder, I can tell my team watch and vintage-inspired tee will provide ample school spirit — and style — all throughout the season.

An outstanding Spartan victory on Friday night paved the way for an outstanding start to the long weekend. For me, that meant a Saturday morning train ride out to the bustling, up-and-coming locale of Asbury Park, an oceanfront New Jersey haven a little over an hour from New York City.  Known for a burgeoning arts scene and prime beach vistas mixed with modern touches — like the newly opened Asbury Hotel — the city has done a nice job mixing the eclectic and the modern. That goes for a classic-yet-refined boardwalk, plus establishments like Dark City Brewing Company and more established locales like one-of-a-kind bar Johnny Mac (spoiler alert — those were two of my stops on the trip). As the day called for casual style, I met the trip accordingly with pieces built for comfort, movement and good looks.

It was a prime chance to break out a new favorite piece from JACHS NY, a vintage-inspired light wash denim shirt that offered a bit of stylish contrast to my laidback Bridge & Burn Stringer Dune Shorts. Note that the JACHS denim shirt is sold-out, but you can grab a reliable back-up via JackThreads. To combat the chance of rain and some cloudy skies, I threw on a stylish hooded parka from the Masafumi Watanabe for Reef collaboration. I also always appreciate the chance to rock some standout sneakers on trips long and short — my Reebok x JackThreads Daily Classic Nylon Sneakers have proven tremendously comfortable and stylish, and they were the perfect Saturday style pick. Although the day started out cloudy, skies eventually opened up as I explored a quickly developing downtown area (not far from the boardwalk, as it were). From stop to stop, I found that the Scout Wallet from Andar Wallets combined a slim profile with functionality, crucial for traveling light. And my Nautica sunglasses brought bit of retro edge — the navy Wayfarer style seen at the very top of the page is cool, unique and casual — but not too laidback. If you read this blog, you know I love me a great watch, and I certainly didn’t pass up a chance to wear my Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch, either.

Those pieces definitely helped me get around Asbury Park in style, including stops at the aforementioned Dark City Brewing — you can’t go wrong with grabbing a tasty flight, but I’d certainly recommend the Bond Street Brownie, a rich, roasted brown ale. I followed up that stop with a lengthy stroll along the boardwalk and a quick pop-in to check out the stylish and sustainable Asbury Park outpost of United By Blue. The shop itself — and the brand — have definitely done a nice job mixing eco-friendly pieces with durable style .  If you find yourself in need of a quick bite or an iced coffee, you can’t go wrong with a quick trip to High Voltage Coffee, located conveniently down the boardwalk from United By Blue. Although the weather was just a tad cloudy for parts of the day, I still had a heck of a time exploring what’s quickly becoming a haven for arts and culture — refurbished boardwalk buildings adorned with large murals are just one example of those efforts. And for those who like a cold brew with a side of outdoor relaxation, the unique Wonder Bar not too far from the boardwalk offered up a nice chance to soak in some rays, while Johnny Mac featured everything from vintage instruments to old records plastered on its packed walls (in addition to a solid selection of craft beer).

I’ll definitely be back to Asbury Park, but yesterday brought a return to NYC and a relaxing Sunday featuring a little bit of everything. I’m a big fan of my Sunday brunch, as any reader of this blog knows, so I always relish the chance to fight the Brunch Village crowds — especially when it means a stop at one of my favorite Brooklyn spots, Rucola. It’s surrounded by quiet, tree-lined streets and lovely brownstones.  On this particular Sunday, I went for sharp-yet-simple style (if you’ve got to head somewhere special right after brunch — say, to a matinee show — a similar combo might be the way to go). In this instance, that meant my Todd Shelton White Oxford was a crisp base for my ensemble, accented by a slim, stylish and comfortable pair of Dockers Premium Clean Garment-Dyed Khakis. Finding pieces that work in that transitional time between summer and fall is tough, but slim chinos in a rich, fall-ready color (like the Tobacco version seen here) are as good a pick as any. The chinos played nicely off the rich brown Johnston & Murphy Duvall Wingtip, and the entire combo would work well with a few minor adjustments throughout the rest of fall (namely, beneath a shawl cardigan when it’s chilly). Two reliable finishing touches helped me complete a look fit for brunch and Sunday adventures — my Wayfarer-inspired Nautica sunglasses and another Jack Mason timepiece (the Nautical 3-Hand Watch). They provided the perfect mix of refined, laidback style — for Sunday brunch, that combination is the way to go.

With a delicious brunch as fuel for the day, I had more than enough time to take care of some writing for GearMoose and hit up a few of my favorite menswear establishments in Brooklyn, including the terrific lifestyle outpost that is Modern Anthology.  They carry a well-curated assortment of home goods, crisp-and-rugged furniture and essential menswear, plus other odds and ends you didn’t know you needed — give the Web store a look, will you? It’s definitely a favorite haunt in the city, and it made my Sunday all the more enjoyable, as did a stop for a refreshing iced coffee at Absolute Coffee in Boerum Hill — I love me a pit stop for a jolt of caffeine, and I love a rich cold brew even more.

Even after all that weekend activity, my time off is still going — and I certainly planned ahead to enjoy Labor Day in style, starting with my Dockers Premium Wrinkle Slim-Fit Twill Shirt (as featured in this site’s Labor Day style suggestion). In this humble writer’s opinion, that comfortable, casual style carried right on through to my JACHS NY Bowie Fit Stretch Cotton Chino in a four-season shade of grey, plus the terrific, durable and unique Todd Snyder + P.F. Flyers Grounder Hi-Top sneakers.  That particular collaboration is certainly one worth admiring — and buying — for its blend of heritage and modern styling, plus all-around great looks. I complemented the look with the Nautical 3-Hand Watch from Jack Mason — the rich blue dial and Perlon strap create a one-of-a-kind pop of blue that’s still nicely versatile with neutral staples (like grey chinos and a navy shirt, for instance). As to my plans for the day? Well, I’m looking forward to another delicious coffee at Milk & Honey — because old habits die hard. A trip to Prospect Park is likely in order as well — and of course, I’ll be busy reflecting on an outstanding Labor Day weekend in and around New York City, and looking forward to a busy fall season.
