#OOTD: How to Style a Crewneck Sweater This Winter

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

So, welcome back to the #OOTD series here on The Style Guide. The above headline might seem a bit familiar — after all,  a slim crewneck sweater is a personal favorite of this blog, and it’s as well-suited for casual, rugged fall style as it is for layering in the early stages of winter. And the particular sweater that’s being featured today is as close to a perfect reinterpretation of a classic style as we’ve got — especially from lauded American menswear designer Todd Snyder. But what differentiates the below #menswear look from other features here on the blog? We’re throwing in more weather-ready layers, for one. And we’re mixing high-low style staples like a slim topcoat with everyday wardrobe staples. If you find you don’t have any of the picks below, it’s as good a time as any to get shopping. Got additional picks to add to the below list? Hit me up on Twitter, or check out the Instagram feed for a look into what makes The Style Guide (AKA, me) tick.

A high-low way to wear a crewneck sweater this winter. Not bad, ehh?

A high-low way to wear a crewneck sweater this winter. Not bad, ehh?

The Sweatshirt: Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt, $98 — The Todd Snyder x Champion line is packed full of stellar, heritage and sportswear-inspired pieces. This Pocket Sweatshirt is exhibit A in  that regard — it’s comfortable, easy to layer and potentially your new favorite sweatshirt.

The Shirt: Life/After/Denim Windom Oxford Shirt, $128 — More than $100 for a classic Oxford shirt? Well, when it’s made from premium yarn-dyed cotton in a slim cut, it’s worth the investment.

The Topcoat: JackThreads Tieman Topcoat, $149 — So, here’s where a bit of that high-low style comes into play. The “topcoat-over-a-crewneck” look is something perfected by the likes of David Beckham, so I’d say it’s Style Guide-approved.

The Denim: Buck Mason Black Slim Stretch Denim, $175 — From the makers of your favorite short-sleeve chambray shirt comes a fantastic pair of slim black denim — just as ready for a  rock concert as a casual weekend coffee date. What belt to wear? Well, brown and black can work casually (keep reading), so reach for a braided leather belt.

The Socks: American Trench Fair Isle Sock in Merino/Cashmere, $28.98 — So, some of the picks in this particular #OOTD are quite pricey — including these socks. But American Trench does things as well as anyone when it comes to stylish, durable accessories.

The Boots: Thorogood Dodgeville Boots in Cognac ,$375 — Need another pair of durable, rugged leather boots in your closet? This handsome, versatile and easy-to-wear unlined pair of Thorogood Dodgeville Boots are a nice way to amp up the slightly more casual crewneck sweater.

The Watch: MVMT Watches Calypso Watch, $145 — From the stellar new Modern Sport Collection by MVMT Watches, the Calypso is a particular highlight. It’s got the handsome look of a rugged Tudor watch at a fraction of the price. Since it’s a casual outfit, a black rubber strap can work alongside the cognac Thorogood boots.

The Hat: Columbiaknit Marled Watch Cap, $17.98 — Sometimes, you don’t need to go too fancy with your winter accessories. In this case, the Columbiaknit Marled Watch Cap is neutral, simple and quite functional in the cold.

And, well, that’s all she wrote. When it comes time to layer up on a casual-but-cold day at the office or around town, you nearly can’t beat a stylish crewneck sweater — especially one made from premium materials. And pieces like slim black denim and a classic navy Oxford create a bit of a unique one-two punch, particularly when accented by an affordable (yet great-looking!) camel topcoat. When you top it all off with rugged, eye-catching cognac leather boots, it’s a mixture of pleasing colors and textures that work well when put together (yes, even the black denim and brown boots). Of course, you can’t go wrong with a warm winter hat or well-made Fair Isle socks. In fact, this head-to-toe look might just become one you break out time and again — at least, I hope so.

Stay stylish, and stay tuned for a (relatively) last-minute holiday gift guide coming tomorrow.

Him being your dad, brother, father-in-law, significant other — you get the picture. If you’re still shopping for that perfect gift, you’ve come to the right place. Again, a thoughtful gift personalized to the recipient trumps anything on this list — but if there’s some crossover between the two, that’s all the better. A hard-wearing boot for the menswear fan in your life.

Did you snag a pair of the durable, rugged and Huckberry-exclusive Academic Boot  when it was featured in this site’s rugged fall style ensemble? Yes? No? Thought about it? If you know a guy on your list who loves tough boots for inclement weather, this sturdy, stylish pair from Lanona Shoe Co. is the pair to buy. Consider it a big gift from Santa to supplement smaller gifts, perhaps. They’re a pair of boots to be worn with a classic chambray shirt and slim denim, plus a shawl-collar cardigan … then again, you won’t know unless you buy a pair for yourself too, right? (Wink, wink).

Watches: Luminox P-38 Lightning Chronograph — $379.98

Equal parts rugged, durable and essential for any watch fan.

Equal parts rugged, durable and essential for any watch fan.

Why put this reliable-as-heck, handsome-as-all-get-out P-38 Lightning Chronograph in the “Watches” category as opposed to another menswear option? Well, plenty of us love collecting stylish watches, and if you know an aficionado, watches are a bit of a devotion. It’s a good thing that this Luminox timepiece as sold by everyone’s favorite retail site (that’s Huckberry, duh) is in a league of its own. It’s Swiss-made, with the precision to keep exact time and the durability to pass everything from special forces to diving tests.

Home Goods, Part #1: Southern Lights Electric Original Bell Jar Table Lamp — $89.98

I love lamp. Yes, this lamp.

I love lamp. Yes, this lamp.

So, fear not — that’s indeed a lamp listed on this here gift guide. But not just any lamp. If you’ve got a guy in your life — say, a bachelor who could use some home design help *raises hand* — the Original Bell Jar Table Lamp is an interesting option to consider. It features an exposed Edison-style bulb at its center, not to mention that handsome, old-time aesthetic plenty of us crave in our home layouts. The solid wood base is manufactured in Nashville, while the name plate itself is silk-screened by hand. And the end result? A stylish, handsome table lamp to add some class to the recipient’s home, apartment or office.

Norden makes its finely crafted candles with sustainability in mind — the ceramic vessel carrying said candle can be washed out and re-used. Plus, the ceramic containers are a subtly stylish way to add a bit of visual interest to the lucky gift … getter’s apartment or home. And of course, each candle makes use of a unique, outdoors-y scent.

Style Pick of the Week: Original Chippewa Service Boots

Editor’s note: Expect these posts weekly detailing one standout item coveted by yours truly. Sometimes, these fit within budgetary restrictions and other times, they’re expensive splurges worth saving for. For more Wish List items from Beau, head here, and to see other Style Picks, head here.

Chippewa Original Service Boots

A rough-and-tumble pair of boots ready for winter style and exploration in equal parts.

Now, in recent weeks on The Style Guide, we’ve turned our attention to versatile essentials — like a stylish bomber jacket and a durable leather watch — but what about your winter footwear game? Seeing as we’re into December now, that’s where the Original Chippewa Service Boot is likely to come in mighty handy. Perhaps you’re dealing with the first — or second, or third — snowfall of the year and you want a durable, tough and rugged boot that’s still office-appropriate … once you kick off that snow at the door. Again, the Original Service Boot is a heck of a pair of footwear to pick up. It’s got a heartier construction and feel to it than something like the sleeker, dressier Astorflex Chelsea Boot — as seen on this blog earlier this fall — so this sturdy pair of Chippewa boots is going to stand up to all kinds of winter snow and slush. In fact, it’s a prime pick for casual, rugged style combos. And the best part about it? Unlike a more functionally inclined boot like the Danner Mountain Pass, this set of boots is still more than ready to pair up with  cold-weather business casual combos, too. How so? Think a wool blazer and a classic chambray shirt, plus slim dark denim on chilly days.  Oh, and the handsome Tan Renegade color is just an added bonus in terms of versatility. Yes indeed, if you consider yourself a fan of stylish winter boots, it’s yet another pair to consider adding to your #menswear rotation. Why exactly should you do that? Just as with lots of products sold via Huckberry, the difference is in the details — and then some.

Original Service Boots

In a rich, versatile Tan Renegade color, these leather boots represent serious everyday style.

Just like the full run of tough Original Chippewa boots sold through Huckberry, the Service Boot is 100 percent handcrafted in the U.S.A. That translates to a higher price point, yet also results in greater transparency, better quality and the type of style you’ve come to expect from the brand. The Goodyear welt on the Original Service Boot means they’re durable to begin with, but also come with the option be re-soled when you’ve put quite a few miles on them. The beautiful full-grain leather on the Service Boot will break in beautifully, too. Again, while you could always reach for a sleek pair of leather chukka boots or leather wingtips, those pairs aren’t going to stand up to the elements quite like the rugged-refined Original Chippewa Service Boot. The price point is definitely investment-worthy, don’t get me wrong. That’s why you should wear these boots confidently with everything from a waxed trucker jacket and burgundy corduroys to a slim crewneck sweater and olive chinos — seriously, try both of those combos for a bit of high-low weekend or weekday style.  With premium finishing touches like leather laces and nickel-finished eyelets, the Original Service Boot is a pair you can confidently wear on a bar crawl, to a rock concert or on a casual weekend coffee date — all in the same week. Get your pair of the Original Chippewa Service Boot while they’re around.

Shop the Original Chippewa Service Boot via Huckberry.

Have any questions on these boots? Better yet, want to recommend a Style Pick? Let’s connect on Twitter, y’all.

The Friday Read: Bastille, Greg Lauren and A Huckberry Giveaway

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.

We’re through the end of another week, and we’re just a bit closer to Christmas — if you’re one who celebrates the holiday season, that is. It’s also a great time of year in the menswear world — it’s time to drop a few hints about your men’s style holiday wish list, it’s time to gear up with stylish snow gear, and it’s time to get a big jump on your holiday shopping for her. With all those wheels in motion, it made for an extra-busy week at The Style Guide. It kicked off with a really neat, special Monday night — it’s not too often you get the chance to check out a band as big as Bastille  in a venue as intimate as the renowned Bowery Ballroom, but the lauded British indie pop band returned to NYC to make up a special show originally scheduled for October. It was a fantastic night of live music — lead singer Dan Smith is smooth, poised and energetic, with a great band behind him. They played their way through one of the best pop albums of the year — that would be “Wild World” — with a few slightly older hits (“Pompeii” among them!) thrown in for good measure. Songs like “Warmth” and “The Currents” really shone through in a live setting, too. It was a treat to see them in such an intimate venue — and it was even better to catch them the very next night at Manhattan’s cavernous Pier 36 for the very cool Pandora Holiday Live event, which also featured scores of fans on-hand for Bishop Briggs and the energetic (if divisive) British mega-band The 1975 , a group who seem to be everywhere nowadays. If you can, I’d definitely recommend catching Bastille at one of a number of festivals this summer — they’ll surely be there! While summer festival season sounds mighty nice right about now, maybe you’ve got to dress in style for your holiday party, or get a jump on the weekend, so let’s get on with it — we’ve got you covered with this week’s #menswear news.

Nautica

A standout giveaway from everyone's favorite lifestyle purveyor.

A standout giveaway from everyone’s favorite lifestyle site.

  • Alright, so this is a pretty big deal. Purveyors of a stunning mix of men’s lifestyle and style goods, Huckberry is doing it big this holiday season with its Golden Holiday 2016 contest. It’s four straight weeks of neat holiday prizes you can only find at Huckberry, running from now until December 18th. What was last week’s prize? A sweet Secret Agent kit featuring some seriously stylish tailored gear from Trumaker. And this week’s prize? Potentially even cooler. It’s a bespoke sailing adventure — yes, you read that right — on a private yacht around one of a handful of beautiful locations: Maine, the British Virgin Islands, Croatia or Greece, all thanks to Huckberry partners Sailing Collective. Now, how to enter? Those who place an order via Huckberry this week are in the running — every purchase gets you Coal Hard Cash, which you can redeem 24 hours after said purchase to find out if you’ve won Huckberry credit (up to $500!) or, better yet, the incredible top prize (no exaggeration here). But wait! There are two more weeks of prizes upcoming! Yes sir, that’s right. Does it get any better? Learn more, buy away & enter at Huckberry.
  • Want to mix a few more pieces with some high-fashion edge into your wardrobe? That task just got a little easier thanks to a new collaboration between Greg Lauren and Banana Republic.  Although at first it might seem unlikely given Lauren’s penchant for distressed, luxurious takes on style essentials, it’s a partnership through the Council of Fashion Designers that resulted in a 16-piece capsule collection. Of those 16 pieces, there are quite a few that are, well, pricey (a $3,000 cashmere overcoat, anyone?), but it’s a neat blend of the traditional and the unexpected that you should check out via the above feature at GQ.com.
  • In sneaker-related news, your favorite Brooklyn sneaker brand — Style Guide favorite GREATS  — is releasing an outstanding, sleek and stylish take on its lauded Royale silhouette. The good news for those of us who like to break out sneakers until the first snowfall hits? The new version of the Royale comes in a seasonally appropriate, deep navy blue “Jeans Suede” color that would team quite effectively with your favorite crewneck sweater and a trusty chambray shirt on casual winter weekends (sans snow, of course).

Want to read one more feature before the weekend?

Now, we’ve reached the end of the Friday Read this week — enter that Huckberry giveaway ASAP and add a few pieces to your Men’s Holiday Style Wish List now!

Stay stylish!

Editor’s note: For more gift ideas, check out last year’s women’s style holiday gift guide.

So, you’ve looked at the ole calendar and realized it’s December, ehh? In a bit of a gift-giving panic (and if not, maybe soon)? Well, fear not — The Style Guide is here to set you up with excellent holiday gift-giving advice for all the stylish ladies in your life. Hopefully, they strike the right chord — if you don’t see any suggestions to fit your gifting needs, shoot me an email and we’ll help you out. Whether you’re buying for your wife, girlfriend, mom, sister or grandma — or likely that whole group, and more — there are plenty of picks below to get those gears turning. In fact, the list is expanded and divided into a few helpful categories. Last year’s Women’s Style Holiday Gift Guide might also help you out in a pinch — but that’s just this writer’s opinion. The biggest key is thoughtful gift-giving — while you might love a framed NFL jersey, your wife might not appreciate said gift (I kid, I kid). It’s never an easy process — so read on, shop away and leave any questions in the comments below.

Home Goods: Luvhaus Ceramics One-Of-A-Kind Turqouise Tumblers (Set of 2) — $64.98

Luvhaus Ceramics

Let’s get this kicked off with a helpful nudge — if you find yourself shopping Huckberry quite a bit, you can kill two birds with one stone. The site’s excellent Huckberry Gift Guide is packed with gifts for everyone from your father-in-law to your son, and the site’s Huckberry Women’s Collection is a veritable treasure trove of outstanding finds both big and small. That includes the very cool set of Luvhaus turquoise tumblers seen here — talk about a neat addition to your kitchen, and the perfect set of tumblers for occasions throughout the year.

Made from a 50-caliber shell casing, this unique piece of jewelry is truly one of a kind.

Made from a 50-caliber shell casing, this unique piece of jewelry is truly one of a kind.

The folks at Sword & Plough get a lot right when it comes to their production and design of stylish men’s and women’s accessories, starting with their support of veterans through every step of design and production. In particular, the Brass Bar Necklace is unique, subtly stylish and a perfect, understated finishing touch. This neat necklace is made from a 50-caliber shell casing, and it’s done in partnership with Bang Bang Ballistic. Co-founder Shanna Rodenberg is a disabled veteran who first experimented with making jewelry out of spent ammo after eight years serving in Afghanistan — you won’t find another piece of jewelry with that pedigree and history this season.

Footwear: Nisolo Oliver Oxford in Brandy — $134.98

Nisolo Oliver Oxford

A chic, refined and well-made pair of shoes that everyone can appreciate.

Now, you certainly don’t have to be a “fashionista” to appreciate a chic, well-made and versatile pair of shoes — right? Nisolo handcrafts its beautiful men’s and women’s shoes in Pereu, and the Oliver Oxford is the brand’s interpretation of a classic men’s Oxford. The sheep leather insole provides comfort atop a stacked leather heel, and the slip-free rubber heel cap provides an added dash of functionality. They’re a more unique take on women’s footwear, but hopefully appreciated by those who love great design.

Headwear/Accessories: Goorin Brothers January Breeze Felt Hat — $60

Goorin Brothers women's hats

A classic, chic hat for the woman who favors unique, neat style.

We’re keeping things rolling for the fashionable woman (or women) in your life here today. When it comes to versatile, well-made hats, Goorin Brothers is tough to top. On top of classic wool flatcaps and leather fedoras for men — as seen in my recent upstate travel post — the brand also makes a slew of stylish women’s hats, both more unique and more traditional in nature. If the lady in your life needs a new hat to go along with her leather Oxfords, the January Breeze could be the one to gift. Its shape is classic and easily wearable in breezy winter temperatures, and it makes a neat addition to a travel wardrobe — at least in the eyes of this author.

Accessories: Tanner Goods Vanguard Saddle Bag in Hickory — $249.98

A beautiful bag made from premium materials, from the same brand who makes your favorite belt.

A beautiful bag made from premium materials, from the same brand who makes your favorite belt.

If you follow along with this blog regularly, you know that we love ourselves some Tanner Goods gear. The brand’s belts and wallets are investment-worthy, and now, the brand is carefully crafting some amazing women’s accessories as well. Take the incredible Tanner Goods Vanguard Saddle Bag in Hickory. It’s a lovely bag, able to work all through the day and night in a beautiful Hickory color and all-leather construction. The Vanguard Saddle Bag is also made in America — as the brand does with its men’s lifestyle products — features what the brand calls “graceful lines” for a premium look and feel. If you tend to agree, surely the woman in your life will appreciate it.

Accessories, Part 2: Scarf Shop Giant Cotton Scarf — $49.98

Scarf Shop Cotton Scarf

A refined, wearable and stylish cotton scarf for the holiday season.

So, us guys value stylish, functional winter accessories — and it stands to reason that the ladies in your life do, as well. This cotton scarf certainly isn’t built for taking on a snowstorm, but it’s a neat, textured cotton piece that you might call an “indoor scarf” — ideal for layering with a sweater or cardigan in front of the fire or at a New Year’s Eve party. And if you’ve got someone in mind who likes that type of thing, I’d suggest you pick up the Scarf Shop Giant Cotton Scarf.

Home and Bath Goods: Herbivore Spa Day Beauty Set — $79.98

Herbivore Spa Day Set

A refreshing, responsibly made and affordable spa set for her.

Who knew that Huckberry offered spa products? Certainly not this guy. But if your wife or girlfriend wants a nice way to relax — at an affordable price point for you — then the Spa Day Beauty Set is just what you need to purchase this holiday season. It features calming bath salts, an exfoliating rose body polish and jasmine body oil for a complete package made with premium ingredients and care. The Spa Day Beauty Set  is also all-natural and non-toxic — it’s a winning situation all around.

Frank & Oak
Now, I suppose that’s that. Hopefully, the above picks represent a broad spectrum of gift-giving selections for all the fine women in your life. If you’ve got a gift you want to run by a trusted fellow style fan, I’m the man to see. From the fashionista to someone who loves to entertain, stylish, premium gifts like leather Oxfords or a set of unique tumbler glasses fit the bill perfectly. Of course, the above gifts are just a smattering of the gifts you could buy — and supplementing a style-minded gift with something more personal (a new book or tickets to a favorite play, perhaps?) are always great to keep in mind. With that being said, let me know how your holiday shopping is going — and keep an eye out for our Friday Read and Style Pick of the Week entries later this week.

Happy shopping, and stay stylish!

#OOTD: How to Dress for the First Snowfall

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD series will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here.

Can you feel it? A real chill in the air? Temperatures (nearly) below or *gasp* at freezing? And maybe … the flutter of a snowflake or two? Yes, the more you look around these parts — that is, Brooklyn — on The Style Guide, the more you realize winter’s just about here. Of course, if you find yourself in a warm climate year-round, stop reading — we have plenty of beach-ready menswear for you. But if you need to bundle up for that first snowfall, the #menswear you need is just a few clicks away — and it looks sharp for situations casual and slightly less so.  Essential layering pieces like a shawl-collar cardigan and a slim henley can work all through fall, but when it comes time to combat the snow? You can certainly still reach for ’em with confidence. We’ll get to the full #OOTD below — and for style inspiration on the daily, check out the behind-the-scenes process on Instagram.

Layering up for snowy weather with a comfortable henley, a rugged cardigan and waterproof boots.

Layering up for snowy weather with a comfortable henley, a rugged cardigan and waterproof boots.

The Cardigan: JACHS NY Donegal Shawl Neck Cardigan, $129 — With its combination of hefty fabric yet a pleasingly modern fit, this cardigan is refined enough for the office but casual enough for the weekend.

The Topcoat: Old Navy Wool-Blend Topcoat in Crème Caramel, $124.94 — Add another brand to your list when it comes to stylish topcoat shopping this season. Old Navy knocks it out of the park with this functional, sharp number. Is it a heavy, technical parka? Not quite. But will it layer up nicely and look refined along the way? Yes, sir.

The Denim: Flint & Tinder All-American Jeans (Slim Tapered or Straight Tapered), $98 — If you caught this site’s post on the best men’s selvedge denim, then you know how essential Flint & Tinder jeans can be. Snag either the Straight or Slim Tapered cut and wear them all season. As to a belt? Choose a braided leather belt  for seasonally appropriate texture if you’ve got one.

The Henley: OLIVERS Apparel Convoy Henley, $98 — If you’re heading to the office & a henley won’t cut it, sub in a stylish chambray shirt & a wool tie. But in casual situations? Layer away with this soft, comfortable and slim henley.

The Boots: Cole Haan Lockridge Moc Toe Waterproof Boots, $350 — Perhaps more well-known for lightweight shoes like its ZeroGrand series, the Lockridge is a flexible, durable and completely waterproof boot ready for snow and slush, plus a business casual day at the office.

The Socks: Anonymous-ism Fair Isle Grade Crew Socks, $25 (Available via East Dane) — With various shades of blue in this outfit — plus that rich camel topcoat — a shot of red via textured socks makes a nice addition.

The Watch: Lum-Tec M60 GMT Watch, $499.98 — If you stop by here often, you know that Lum-Tec makes a bevy of watches that are Style Guide favorites. Although brown boots are in play, the M60 GMT Watch features a black dial and a black leather strap– but it comes with a stainless steel bracelet or a black rubber strap (especially handy in the snow).

The Hat: Herschel Supply Co. Abbott Knit Beanie, $20 (Available via East Dane) — Other than stylish leather gloves, what’s the one accessory keeping you warm in the blustery snow? A functional, neutral winter cap. If you’re going to go investment-level with a durable casual watch, might as well keep your hat affordable and versatile.

Join Frank & Oak Elevate - Enjoy FREE Shipping, Cashback + more at Frank + Oak! Try it now for 90 days, risk free!

This snowfall-ready outfit favors fashion just a bit more than function — we’re not throwing on a blizzard-level parka and snow pants just yet. But in the event it does start to snow a little harder, versatile accessories like a warm shawl collar cardigan and a sharp topcoat should serve you well. And accessories like tough winter boots  and a rugged leather watch can certainly take a few punches. Regardless of whether you’re stepping through  a few flurries or the bitter chill, don’t leave home without a warm scarf and gloves (thank your mom for that reminder, too!). If you’ve got other questions on what to wear for the first snowfall, or just want to chat, shoot me an email or a Tweet.

Stay stylish!

Men’s Style Holiday Wish List 2016

Editor’s note: Be sure to check out last year’s Men’s Style Holiday Wish List as you shop around. Portions of this post use affiliate links, from which a small commission might be earned. Thanks for supporting the brands that support The Style Guide!

If you peruse the pages of ye olde Style Guide regularly, you might recognize that your author is a big fan of the much-coveted style wish list. From a seasonal favorite — the rugged-leaning Fall Style Wish List — to holiday-centric picks like the ones below, it’s fun to shop around, look ahead and set goals. That is to say, the pieces featured below are definitely investment-worthy, often made with beautiful construction, quality materials and classic styling potential for the holiday season and beyond. It’s a favorite of mine to write, and hey, it’s fun to dream about what Santa might be putting under the tree this Christmas. You’ll recognize picks from Style Guide-approved digital sites like Huckberry and brands like Apolis, along with new picks sure to surprise, delight and possibly hurt your credit card. Not convinced? Read on below and drop us a note on The Style Guide Facebook page.

#1. Thorogood Dodgeville Boots in Cognac — $375

thorogood-boots

A handsome, rugged pair of boots made in America.

Who doesn’t love a pair of rugged leather boots? Very few, I’d say. And even fewer if the boots in question are the beautifully crafted, handsome-looking Thorogood Dodgeville Boots. They top this Wish List because, to be frank, last year’s Wish List featured leather sneakers at the top, and this year’s edition needed some refreshing — truly! Even more than that, they’re a unique change of pace from something like the Red Wing Iron Ranger — they’re unlined for a lighter weight and far less break-in time, and the Cognac color of the Dodgeville Boots should prove itself versatile, rich and investment-worthy — for you or someone else on your list.

#2. Todd Snyder Suede Quad Jacket in Tobacco — $1,595

A simply stunning jacket that's unique, premium and yes ... expensive.

A simply stunning jacket that’s unique, premium and yes … expensive.

So, first things first: Wow. Just … wow. That jacket is something else! And were it not for your author’s love of rugged, durable boots, it would top this list. Now, is it realistic to spend more than $1,500 on a jacket for yourself? Ehh… not really. That’s why it’s on the Wish List, though — it reflects the type of premium approach to heritage staples that Todd Snyder has perfected. From the Todd Snyder x Champion Pocket Sweatshirt to the stunning Suede Quad Jacket, each piece is worthy of the purchase price in its own way. This upgraded hybrid field jacket is one you should wear as much as you can — with a shirt and tie, over a marled henley and out to Sunday brunch this holiday season.

#3. Lum-Tec Special Edition Combat B30 Bronze Watch — $899.98

Uniquely durable, well-designed and long-lasting -- a beautiful watch for your own wish list.

Uniquely durable, well-designed and long-lasting — a beautiful watch for your own wish list.

Yet again, another entry on this Holiday Style Wish List is a jaw-dropper — at least for this #menswear fan.  Of course, it’s a jaw-dropper in terms of price as well as looks — the Lum-Tec Special Edition Combat B30 Bronze Watch is the type of watch that’s somewhat rare, in that it’s built for the field and the office in equal measure thanks to its handsome profile. The bronze case will take on a unique patina over time, the Miyota automatic movement is one of the best around, and the Combat B30 Bronze Watch  comes with four heavy nylon straps — the interchangeability means it could be dressed up with a leather strap, too. So yes, it made my wish list pretty easily — how about yours?

#4. Flint and Tinder Bomber Jacket — $178

A versatile, easy-to-layer and oft-coveted bomber jacket for the holiday style wish list.

A versatile, easy-to-layer and oft-coveted bomber jacket for the holiday style wish list.

Now, it’s somewhat rare that a piece like the Flint and Tinder Bomber Jacket — more suited perhaps for fall than winter weather — makes a cold-weather style wish list. But then again, the Flint and Tinder Bomber Jacket  is no ordinary bomber jacket. It’s tough, durable and fully ready for winter layering — it’s the rare bomber jacket that also nails the hybrid between casual and dressier style, so it could reliably stand in for a blazer atop a blue Oxford for unique (and toasty) looks. That’s what makes it a worthy addition to this list — the Flint and Tinder Bomber Jacket is high-quality enough to hang with the best outerwear around, and versatile enough to work through the spring. Heck, you might want to gift it to someone — and then pick one up for yourself.

A unique take on the trucker jacket in a winter-friendly fabric.

A unique take on the trucker jacket in a winter-friendly fabric.

We all love a versatile, durable denim jacket for the warmer months, right? And sure, you’ve got a tough waxed trucker jacket for the fall season. But what about when you need another casual layer during the chill of winter? Something to throw on underneath a slim topcoat or over a classic crewneck sweatshirt?  That’s exactly the type of jacket your friendly neighborhood menswear author had in mind when adding the Alta Wool Flannel Jean Jacket to this list – it’s unique in its silhouette and fabrication, cozy enough to wear over a marled henley with a winter scarf, and ready for prime layering this winter. Hopefully, Santa brings you one.

BONUS PICK: Apolis Selvage Denim Chore Coat — $228
Apolis Selvage Denim Chore Coat

A Huckberry exclusive made with the best denim around.

We’ve got a bonus pick for you here today, ‘cuz Santa doesn’t leave just one gift under the tree — does he? Brands like Apolis stock darn near all the great menswear you could ask for, from rugged picks like the Huckberry-exclusive Selvage Denim Chore Coat to classic staples like its Standard Issue Utility Chino. But the coat featured above is the one to grab — or covet — this holiday season. It’s made from premium Cone Mills denim in an immensely wearable silhouette, from the office to the trail and back. Again, I sure hope Santa hooks you up.
And with that, the book is closed on this year’s Holiday Style Wish List. Well, partially. On second thought, might just open up another tab for that Flint and Tinder Bomber Jacket … at any rate, it’s an exercise in fun that should get you thinking about gift-giving and saving ahead for the new year. Yes, we’re all about style resolutions, and upgrading key wardrobe essentials like a rugged chore coat and a stylish field watch are great goals to keep in mind this holiday season and beyond. If you’re joining us here on The Style Guide today, that means you made it through Black Friday shopping — and Cyber Monday shopping — just fine. So, congrats!  It was an especially busy week in New York City coming off a Thanksgiving trip to Florida  and catching up on work. I also got out of the office on Thursday night for an especially neat opportunity — I had the pleasure of attending a great Men’s Health Style & Casio G-SHOCK collection preview at the very cool, very refined Tourneau TimeMachine in Manhattan. If you’re looking to buy a tough, durable watch that can take a serious beating, I’d strongly urge you to check out the Casio G-SHOCK Master of G collection, available exclusively at Tourneau. Oh, and on another style-related note — if you find yourself in need of a new suit, I think I’ve got what you’re looking for. I partnered with Men’s Wearhouse and the Men’s Health MVP Network to showcase the standout AWEARENESS Kenneth Cole line and a stylish slim-fit suit featuring the comfortable, flexible & breathable AWEAR-Tech technology. Coming from a guy who doesn’t often wear suits … you can’t go wrong with a suit that’s made with mobility and performance in mind. And lastly, need to know what to wear to your holiday party? Look no further than the latest Style Suggestion. While you peruse those picks, I’m very much looking forward to a day off work and some time hanging with my good friend and fellow Michigan State (and State News!) alumnus Jesse O’Brien — a talented writer from the Mitten — this weekend in NYC. Keep it stylish, keep it 100 and check out the week in #menswear below.

Style Suggestion: What to Wear to Your Holiday Party

Can you believe the holiday season is upon us? Here at The Style Guide, we absolutely love the holidays — and by we, I mean me. From holiday travel to composing my Holiday Style Wish List, it’s an absolute treat of a time. In addition to looking forward to time spent with loved ones, you should also keep a weather eye out for ways to improve and upgrade your style — especially at this crucial time of year. Yes, it’s a time when you’re dealing with (likely) inclement weather, a bit (or a lot) of travel, gift-giving and plenty more — not to mention a work holiday party that often pops up when you might least expect it (or least look forward to it?). It’s also a time to make sure your style doesn’t stray into overly, err, holiday-esque territory — so, a reindeer sweater is overdoing it just a bit. To get you ready for that inevitable invite in fine fashion, we’ve pulled together one heck of a style suggestion — it’s a bit dressier than your everyday rugged favorites on this here blog, but you’ll be all the better for it. And as you’ll see below, it takes tried-and-true layers — like the classic V-neck sweater — and upgrades them with winter-ready shirting and accessories. Can’t wait to see it? Good. Me neither! Follow along on Instagram and Twitter for more daily style inspiration, and chime in on this suggestion via The Style Guide’s Facebook page.

The Topcoat: JackThreads Tieman Topcoat — $149

Smart, stylish, affordable and easy to wear with a suited holiday look.

Smart, stylish, affordable and easy to wear with a suited holiday look.

Is it any surprise that the great team at JackThreads has absolutely knocked it out of the park with the Tieman Topcoat? It shouldn’t be — the brand’s menswear-focused revamp has been a welcome addition to the digital style scene across the past year, and this handsome, eye-catching double-breasted topcoat is Exhibit A in that regard. It’s no Canada Goose parka in terms of battling extreme conditions, but thrown on over a suit on a crisp winter’s night? You just might have the nicest jacket at the party, fella.

The Suit: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket and Trousers in Grey Wool — $456

https://www.idevaffiliate.com/31555/idevaffiliate.php?id=607&url=11319

A refined suit made with premium materials for under $500? You betcha.

Would you believe that Taylor Stitch makes a heck of a beautiful fall and winter suit in addition to their classic chambray shirts and rugged slim chinos? It’s true, and that’s what makes the Telegraph Suit such a worthy pick-up. The brand took plenty of customer feedback and incorporated it into a suit that manages to merge the modern — a slim fit — with the classic — patch pockets and textured fabric. It’s a classic suit that’ll serve you nicely throughout the rest of the winter season — and it’s the right choice here because of its terrific fit and styling potential. It’s neither too stuffy nor too sloppy, and the Telegraph Suit is certainly a steal for under $500 via Huckberry.

The Sweater: J. Crew Italian Cashmere V-neck Sweater$225

A slightly unexpected color that plays nicely off the blue shirt and grey wool suit.

A slightly unexpected color that plays nicely off the blue shirt and grey wool suit.

There’s no question that J. Crew knows how to do luxurious basics well. Is $225 a lot for a sweater, as we always ask ourselves? Yes, it certainly is — but finding an Italian cashmere sweater for less than that is a bit of a difficult endeavor. The rich Heather Laurel color seen here is a great complement to the grey wool suit and darker blue shirt. Plus, it adds a bit of contrast to the tan plaid tie. Green and blue is a bit of a unique color combination, but it works here — and the sweater will keep you nice and warm underneath your Taylor Stitch suit and topcoat.

The Shirt: Cordings for J. Crew Shirt in Warm Twilight — $128

A dress shirt with some texture and a pleasing winter-ready color.

A dress shirt with some texture and a pleasing winter-ready color.

What better way to complement a classic winter-weight suit than with a sharp blue dress shirt in a textured fabric? J. Crew always seems to do an impressive job with its third-party collaborations, and the Cordings for J. Crew partnership is the latest addition to that roster. Cordings brings its own classic British sensibility to sharp tailoring, and that makes this shirt both traditional and modern. It’s the perfect complement to a deep green sweater — the combination is unique, but works with the darker tones of winter.
Huckberry
The Tie and Pocket Square: Ties.com Tan Plaid Brussels Tie ($25) and Florence Pocket Square ($10)

A plaid tie and a floral pocket square? Give it a try.

A plaid tie and a floral pocket square? Give it a try.

In keeping with the crisp cold-weather vibes of the season, we’re reaching for two pieces here that nod to the holidays without going full-on Santa Claus. The Tan Plaid Brussels Tie is affordably priced in a  nice plaid wool that contrasts with the grey wool suit and blue shirt — it’s a bit of an unexpected color pairing. And the patterned blue pocket square plays nicely off the lighter blue shirt. You’re looking at two patterns that at first might not work together, yet up against a grey wool suit, the combination is a fresh, affordable one. Right?

The Boots: CAT Footwear Sutter Boots in Rust — $210

Just as ready to wear with a winter suit as they are with tough dark denim and a henley.

Just as ready to wear with a winter suit as they are with tough dark denim and a Henley.

Remember seeing the rugged, refined and tough-as-nails CAT Footwear Sutter Boot in this site’s post on the best men’s boots for fall? Of course you do. Although at first this 6-eye, burnished boot might seem too rugged to wear a suit, fear not. The rougher texture of the suit, shirt and tie lend themselves well to a durable, handsome boot. Plus, the higher cut of these boots gives you added traction and grip should the weather turn inclement. If you find yourself in a warmer climate? Ditch the boots for a pair of crisp leather wingtips and perhaps swap out the wool suit for some slim stone chinos and a lightweight navy blazer. Ya dig?

The Socks: American Trench Pima Cotton Houndstooth Socks — $23.98

american-trench-pima-cotton-houndstooth-socks

American Trench consistently delivers on premium, American-made socks — that goes for  both the brand’s casual varieties and dressier iterations. Take these comfortable Pima Cotton Houndstooth Socks  — the navy pattern plays nicely off the blue shirt and grey wool suit, not to mention the patterned pocket square. They’re an investment for a pair of socks, but they’re one that’s worth it — you can wear sharp, subtly stylish socks like this with all sorts of winter work week outfits.
A classic, affordable dress belt and a go-anywhere watch.

A classic, affordable dress belt and a go-anywhere watch.

Make no mistake, your Style Guide author is as much of a fan of classic dress watches from the likes of Daniel Wellington as you are. But given that we’re going with a more rugged outfit — from the textured shirt and tie to the grey wool suit and boots — a sport-inspired, tough chronograph fits right in. The great thing about the Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph is the rich contrast between the black dial and brown leather strap — it’s a pairing that works surprisingly well together. Of course, you can never go wrong with an affordably priced J. Crew Factory leather belt fit for both business casual and slightly dressier looks.
So, that’s your Holiday Style Suggestion all sorted out. A slim V-neck sweater adds a bit of visual interest to a rich grey Telegraph Suit from Taylor Stitch, and both the shirt and tie bring seasonally appropriate texture. The thing to keep in mind is that even at an investment-level price, the Telegraph Suit  is more than just a one-trick pony. That is, you can break up the jacket and pair it with Mott & Bow denim and a classic white Oxford (plus, those durable Sutter Boots from CAT Footwear) during the regular work week, too. And the handsome, refined Armogan Spirit of St. Louis Chronograph is an absolute keeper in terms of both durability, style and versatile looks. Oh, and those Pima Cotton Houndstooth Socks? Once you’ve tried socks from American Trench, you might never go back. As always, you can’t go wrong with a refined, versatile JackThreads topcoat, either. Let me know in the comments how you’re dressing for your holiday party — and as always, stay stylish!

#OOTD: Versatile Suiting with AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole

Editor’s note: Thank you to Men’s Wearhouse and the Men’s Health MVP Network for sponsoring today’s post. Thanks for reading!

On the go with a comfortable, slim-fitting and flexible suit from the AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole line. Denim shirt C/O Forever21 Men. Plaid wool tie and patterned pocket square by Ties.com. Waterbury Chrono by Timex x Red Wing Heritage.

If you follow along with The Style Guide on Instagram or Twitter — or peruse many of this site’s rugged fall style posts, you know that it’s not too often that I suit up. But when I do throw on a shirt, tie and a slim-cut suit, there’s no question that I want that suit to fit, look and feel great. That’s what’s so refreshing about the AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole collection, and that’s why it was a treat to partner with them on this post via the Men’s Health MVP Network. Lest you think we’re throwing out all of those rugged, casual menswear tips and starting from scratch, fear not — there’s plenty more where that came from. But I know that I’ll certainly be more inclined to suit up thanks to the comfort, technology and attention to detail in the new AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole line (sold exclusively at Men’s Wearhouse).

The line features the brand’s AWEAR-TECH technology, part of a larger line featuring the brand’s patented 37.5 technology. It’s a run of tailored clothing — from dress shirts ($89) to full suits, as seen here ($649) — made to remove moisture when it’s hot, and retain warmth when it’s cold. In fact, technology in the suit is made to remove sweat before it even forms. Sound too good to be true? Well, stay with me. It’s performance sports fabric with a tailored touch, perfect for today’s fast-moving menswear world. Yes, the AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole line is definitely made with performance in mind, and that’s what makes it such a great fit for my lifestyle. Between my day job and dashing around town to events in NYC, I value comfort, performance and sharp looks. The AWEARNESS collection nails that balance nicely, as I found out while exploring some of my favorite haunts in Brooklyn, particularly the delicious Fawnker for an essential weekend Bloody Mary. The suit is lightweight, moves easily and is very comfortable — all huge bonuses.

Just the right combination for a Sunday Bloody Mary at Fawnker in Brooklyn. Denim shirt C/O Forever21 Men. Plaid wool tie and patterned pocket square by Ties.com. Colorblocked socks by Richer Poorer. Leather chukka boots by Beckett Simonon. Waterbury Chrono by Timex x Red Wing Heritage. Glasses by Frameri.

The AWEAR-Tech Suit in particular is the type of easy-to-wear, versatile suit that pairs crisply with a denim shirt and a wool tie for essential fall style — I’d recommend you add a dash of timeless appeal with classic leather chukka boots and a rugged leather watch. Of course, there’s more than style and performance woven into the collection. One percent of all everyday gross sales will go toward Hire Heroes USA and Help USA, both organizations that benefit military veterans with a variety of services and help them transition back into the workforce. It’s an admirable cause that blends great style with community engagement — and who doesn’t love that?  You can pick up items from the AWEARNESS Kenneth Cole line exclusively at Men’s Wearhouse — and I’d suggest you do so before your first holiday party or a big business trip, as there’s no other suiting that can keep you cool under pressure … and support a great cause in the process.
