Style Guide Recommends: Here’s Why You Should Be Shopping Bespoke Post

Best everyday carry for guys

The LSTN Sound Co. Headphones are but one piece of stylish gear you get via monthly boxes from Bespoke Post.

Today’s new Style Guide Recommends entry is vitally important. How so? Well, if you want one convenient, accessible, affordable and stylish place to get all of your favorite new gear, I’ve got just the recommendation for you.  If you’re not familiar with the Style Guide Recommends series, know that it covers a little bit of everything under the sun — from the style blog you should be reading now to the perfect headphones to upgrade your listening experience. Today’s new entry hits on a similar note  — that is, a little bit of everything. In short, I’m telling you all about why you should be shopping Bespoke Post — the one-stop store for guys who love handsome, refined and functional menswear, stylish home goods and standout accessories.  It’s among the best subscription boxes for men, and if that sounds like something you can get on board with, stick around for the rest of today’s post.

Plenty of us are surely familiar with how Bespoke Post operates, but if not … you’re in for a big treat. The brand itself is a bit multi-layered — you have the option to sign up for and shop a series of themed boxes, with a new one dropping every month. They also offer up stylish menswear (and more!) via the brand’s store. Crucially, know that Bespoke Post boxes are jam-packed. The way Bespoke Post does it, you get plenty of affordability, value and great style within those boxes. Take my personal favorite, the Bespoke Post Vibes Box — as seen above.  It came packed with sharp headphones from LSTN Sound Co., plus a refreshing candle — it’s a deal that’s totally worth signing up for Bespoke Post. Not bad, right? And the thing is, Bespoke Post boxes run you just $45 — $45! — if you sign up for monthly shipments.

Bespoke Post Weekender Box

Available in a plethora of colors, the Weekender Box is likely the best value on the market when it comes to a durable, handsome and stylish weekender bag.

Plus, you get the chance to review that month’s Bespoke Post box online before it ships, with the option to switch or skip boxes if you so please. Oh, and the goodies in each box are worth well over what you pay — a value of at least $70. Whether we’re talking the beach-centric Bespoke Post Chill Box, the handsome and functional weekender bag contained in the Bespoke Post Weekender Box, or the gastronomically minded Bespoke Post Hecho Box (packed with ingredients for a gourmet Mexican meal), you’re getting stellar quality and value. If you can believe it, that’s not all that Bespoke Post offers! Hold onto your hats.

Bespoke Post

Just two of the supremely stylish pieces of your favorite menswear offered up by Bespoke Post.

In all seriousness, there’s more to Bespoke Post than just the brand’s monthly box subscription. The Bespoke Post Store is packed with all manner of outstanding third-party goods, from stylish menswear to essential men’s grooming gear to a selection of men’s watches and even home goods that really can’t be beat.  On the menswear front in particular, Bespoke Post knocks it out of the park — take the rugged, wearable and well-made Taylor Stitch Beach Jacket, or the Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers in a  handsome shade of brown leather. The fact that you can shop for affordably priced subscription boxes and yet also walk away with some of the best men’s gear around is certainly applause-worthy — are you with me on that? I sure hope so.

Timex

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons to kill a little bit of time hanging around on the Bespoke Post site. The brand’s grooming essentials section in particular is packed with brands both recognizable and upstart, all worthy of a spot in your medicine cabinet. From Ursa Major grooming items to Style Guide favorites Baxter of California, the shop has something for everyone. You also get a reliable helping of affordable men’s home goods, everything from everyday carry tools to masculine-yet-accessible home décor. There’s plenty to shop, and plenty that you’re going to want. In short, you can expect to see quite a few pieces of gear from Bespoke Post in upcoming features on this site.

Greats

So, to recap. If you sign up for Bespoke Post, you get access to a selection of thoughtfully curated, well-designed and affordable monthly subscription boxes. Lest we forget, it’s also worth it to shop one of the more well-done Web stores around, packed with rugged and refined Taylor Stitch menswear and plenty more. In all seriousness, what’s not to love about Bespoke Post? The positives surely outweigh the negatives — in my mind, that makes the site more than worthy of your time and your hard-earned dollars. I’d love to hear: What do you love about Bespoke Post? Will you be shopping the site more now? And what’s your favorite Bespoke Post box?

As always — thanks for reading, and happy shopping!

Style Pick of the Week: Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers

Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers

Handsome, well-made and easily wearable — even in the summer. That’s today’s Style Pick.

We’re going into somewhat uncharted territory today as we consider the stellar Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers. That is, unlike your typical pair of classic summer sneakers — white canvas sneakers or leather slip-ons, for instance — we’re recommending high-top leather sneakers in summer today at The Style Guide. So, bear with me — we’re in this together, and you’re going to like the stellar quality and excellent style the Rambler Hi delivers. Trust me. You really get the best of both worlds — the rugged-refined, heritage-inspired menswear design of New York City’s Todd Snyder, plus the classic silhouette and terrific quality of the P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi.

It’s among a series of items from classic brands that Mr. Snyder has revamped –including the Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch — these are welcome #menswear collabs, indeed. And the recently released Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers are the underrated summer shoes you didn’t know you needed — certainly, they’re among the best sneakers for men. Yes, that’s right — I’m a fan of these, and I think you should be, too.  And what better place to go to get them than a veritable one-stop shop for all your favorite men’s gear? That’d be Bespoke Post. If you’re not familiar, best acquaint yourself now, because it’s the place to go to get the Rambler Hi … and plenty more. Back to the task at hand, though. Why are we reaching for stylish high-top sneakers in summer? For starters, these are crisp, classic and easy to wear — no matter the season. They’re not heavy leather boots, that much is true. And the quality on the Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers? Well, the kicks are certainly up to snuff.

Todd Snyder

Subtle branding touches from both Todd Snyder and P.F. Flyers make this pair more than your average set of kicks.

It starts with the recognizable silhouette and tough P.F. Flyers construction — a brand trademark that’s going to make these comfortable to wear for hours, whether you’re dressing for a summer music festival or schlepping a cooler to your next weekend barbecue.  The exterior of the Rambler Hi is applause-worthy, too — made from premium Cheveux leather, these kicks aren’t a standard pair of athletic sneakers or canvas sneakers. That gives them a slightly dressy, refined edge — feel free to pair them with high-low style combos, like American-made light wash denim and an unstructured blazer, plus a chambray shirt. That versatility means you can also dress them down — as in, throwing on your favorite pair of slim chinos and a classic grey pocket tee.

Nautica

Subtle design touches make a difference when it comes to the Rambler Hi, too.  In this instance, flat waxed cotton laces lend a premium look and feel, at the same time providing some welcome contrast to the rich leather upper. Again, it’s the little details that make the difference in matters of style, and those details should certainly extend to your new favorite sneakers. Can you feel me? And even subtler co-branded details make these special. The Todd Snyder heel tab logo is a touch you won’t find on other P.F. Flyers sneakers — yet another factor that makes the Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Rambler Hi Sneakers a special pair of kicks. With all that being said … are you on-board with stylish high-top sneakers in the summer months? Let me know in the comments, and feel free to check in with me on Twitter. I’ll write back, I promise!

For now — enjoy the rest of the weekend!

The Friday Read: How to Upgrade Your Everyday Carry, Summer Style Tips and The National

OK, Style Guide readers — how was everyone’s Fourth of July? Productive? Relaxing? Ideally filled with quite a few of the best summer beers? I sure hope that was the case. I spent mine relaxing in Brooklyn, hitting up some of favorite coffee and craft beer spots, and putting in some light work on The Style Guide (hey, gotta hustle). At any rate, it’s been a quick, shortened week, what with the holiday falling on a Tuesday. But lest you think nothing’s gone down lately in the #menswear world … think again.

We’ve got plenty of ground to cover before we roll into the weekend. If summer shopping remains a priority for you, I’d urge you (strongly!) to look for affordable men’s style essentials and pick up one of the best men’s polos to buy now.  I’d also urge you to pair said polo with some stylish shorts for the season — two foolproof moves that work for your next summer BBQ, your next beach trip or a casual stroll in your favorite park.  Before you spend all your budget in one place, though … take a look at a few prime men’s style news items below, will ya? And with that, it’s nearly time to kick back for Friday happy hour — isn’t it? Follow along with me through the weekend on Instagram, and thanks for reading!

  • Among other #menswear writing pursuits, I’ve been doing some work for The Menlo House, the blogging arm of personalized style service and E-commerce shop FiveFour Club. As with so many men’s fashion matters, the devil is in the details — so my latest post covers how to upgrade your everyday carry in style. It’s as easy as that!

Timex

  • Looking for a minimal, sharply designed pair of shorts that function in more situations than you can count? That’s what SPUDS is aiming to produce — the brand says that its shorts (launching on Kickstarter on July 11th!) are meant to “redefine men’s activewear,” what with a blend of performance fabric and easily wearable colors. Learn more here, and look out for that launch next week.
  • While we’re on the subject of upgrading your everyday carry, I reckon that myself and the GearMoose team might have found the stylish wallet to buy now. It’s the Hitch & Timber Flat Jacket Wallet, and it’s a handcrafted, rugged beauty of a piece. Go get that wallet now!
  • In other everyday style tips, Esquire.com has a simple — yet quite important — missive for you to follow. Namely, the site’s fine style team wants you to, quite simply, stop buttoning the bottom button of your suit jacket. That’s it! That’s all!

  • Let’s close this week out with some stellar new music — agreed? If you haven’t caught on by now, Brooklyn-bred indie rock heroes The National are masters at crafting subtle, simple and yet detailed and complex songs. The band’s latest release, “Guilty Party,” is a multi-layered, multi-faceted song about love and loss — in short, it’s beautiful and it’s been on repeat here at The Style Guide HQ. Listen away!

Those quick-hit menswear and music items will wrap up today’s Friday Read. I think we’re on track for a great weekend, yes? Let me know on Twitter if you’ll be doing any shopping for summer style essentials, or if you’ve got any style-minded questions. With all that being said, I’ve got a happy hour to look forward to later — cheers and enjoy the weekend!

Sutro Shoes Inc.

#OOTD: How to Wear A Polo Shirt This Summer

If you’ve been dressing for warm weather for a few months now, perhaps your #menswear rotation feels a bit stale. After all, perhaps you’ve got that slim-fit polo shirt and yet … don’t quite know how to wear it or what to wear it with? Aside from pairing it up with slim light wash denim or tailored chino shorts, there are a few key moves you should keep in mind when using a slim polo shirt as the basis of your ensemble.  Importantly, don’t shy away from pairing up said polo with a tailored jacket. The key to getting that oft-coveted versatility so many of us seek in a stylish summer polo? It all starts with a shirt that’s dressy, crisp and tailored — yet easy to wear with just about anything. That’s where Criquet Shirts comes into play. Namely, its Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — crafted with a sharp collar, quality fabric and breathability in the summer heat — is a winner. I can certainly vouch for that, having taken a few of the brand’s polo shirts on a Memorial Day weekend trip to Florida.  And I think you’ll be similarly pleased if you pick up a Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt  for yourself — so stay tuned, read on and let me know what you think of the following outfit via The Style Guide Facebook page.

Nautica

A sharp, slim-fitting polo plus a crisp suit jacket and garment-washed chinos — all staples that are stylish and summer-friendly.

The Shirt: Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt in Midnight Cowboy, $79 — As we’ve mentioned before, Criquet Shirts knows how to make a nice, wearable and modern-yet-classic polo — you know, the kind McQueen might’ve worn.

Florsheim
The Jacket: Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket, $278 — Made in part from linen — the of-the-moment fabric you need in your closet  this summer — the modern Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket nicely offsets the sharp polo.

The Trousers: Johnston and Murphy Slim-Fit Garment-Washed Chinos, $88 — While you could certainly wear your Criquet Shirts Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt with matching Taylor Stitch suit trousers, slim chinos in a pleasing off-white shade are summer-friendly and a bit more casual.

The Shoes: Nisolo Calano Oxford, $188 —  Clean, simple and well-constructed, the Nisolo Calano Oxford is a sharp alternative to traditional brown wingtips.

The Socks: Arvin Goods No-show Socks (Three-pack), $30 — Thanks to past entries on this site — including how to wear linen trousers this summer — I’d wager you’re familiar with the comfortable, affordable Arvin Goods No-show Socks — they’re a critical way to keep your feet cool when worn with rolled chinos.

Ben ShermanThe Watch: Orient Bambino Second Generation, $179.98 — For a look that incorporates both tailored and more casual elements, reach for a handsome, clean watch like the Orient Bambino Second Generation.

Sutro Footwear

The Sunglasses: Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, $99.98 — A returning entrant from this site’s Style Pick of the Week series,  the Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses blend versatility and retro style easily.

The Everyday Carry: This Is Ground Mod 15-Inch Laptop Case, $419.98 —  Want to look sleek and office-ready? Take all of your daily essentials in the This Is Ground Mod Case, a handy, sharp accessory.

When stepping out in something a little bit different from the everyday — in this case, a slim-fit polo shirt worn with the sharp Taylor Stitch Telegraph Jacket  — the key is getting that polo fitted properly from the get-go. That allows you to throw on a tailored jacket and slim chinos. With those pieces in order, you’ll definitely step out in style with the sleek-yet-rugged  Nisolo Calano Oxford. Naturally, other stylish accessories should get some play, too. Although a small detail, I can’t recommend the Arvin Goods No-show Socks enough, and I certainly can’t recommend the Orient Bambino Second Generation enough, either. Oh, and lastly ….retro style inspiration is the way to go when wearing a throwback polo, so something along the lines of  Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses should treat you very nicely. Where are ya going? Don’t leave before securing your everyday carry with the This Is Ground Mod Case. I think that covers all of the bases here — with that being said, I leave it up to you to shop this look, wear this look and quite simply … crush it wearing this look.

Thanks for reading — stay stylish!

Online Shopping Picks: The Best Men’s Weekender Bags for a Road Trip

That bag you’re packing up for your next getaway — is it one of the best men’s weekender bags for a road trip? No? You’re not sure? Don’t worry — it’s taken care of. A stylish weekender bag is the lofty subject we’ll tackle in today’s latest Online Shopping Picks entry — and I think you’re going to like the results.  As we so often talk about here on The Style Guide, developing great style really is the sum of a lot of moving parts. From the stylish  sneakers on your feet to that slim short-sleeve shirt hanging in your closet, looking and feeling great comes down to the details — and that’s certainly the case when it comes to the bag you’re bringing with you on your next road trip.
Florsheim
If the goal is to get out of town in style, you’re going to want a functional, durable weekender bag that looks just as great as it performs. We’re talking about a tough weekender bag that can go from the trunk of your car to the overhead bin to the floor of your rustic, refined boutique hotel without missing a beat. The right bag has got good looks, easy utility and investment-level quality in spades. And as to the below options? Well, I’d say that each of them certainly pass muster. Chime in on Twitter with any thoughts on this list of the best men’s weekender bags, and follow me on Instagram to see how I’m packing in style this summer.

#1. Nisolo Leon Weekender — $397.98

Relatively rare all-leather construction, excellent looks and an agreeable price.

Is the Nisolo Leon Weekender pricey? Yes. Is it a Style Guide favorite for its combination of rugged good looks and smart craftsmanship? That’s also a definitive “Yes.” An all-leather weekender like the Leon Weekender is a pretty rare find these days, particularly with a price tag that’s not too outrageous. Think of this as a stylish weekender bag that’ll look just as handsome with a tailored suit on a business trip as it will with a chambray shirt and chinos on a casual weekend getaway.

#2. Billykirk Large Sport Carryall — $251.98

Billykirk

The rugged ability to serve as both a gym bag and a weekender bag — you should expect nothing less from Billykirk.

Leave it to Billykirk to make a weekender/gym bag that works twice as hard as you’d expect. In one instance, the Large Sport Carryall is a uniquely stylish way to lug your favorite gym gear to and from a morning workout. And the next day, it could reliably serve as a durable weekender bag for an upstate trip. With its use of Cordura material and Mil-Spec hardware — not to mention sturdy, USA-made construction — picking up the Large Sport Carryall is almost like getting two bags for the price of one.

#3. Bespoke Post Weekender Box — $45

$45 for the Bespoke Post Weekender Box? Too good to be true, right? Wrong.

That price above isn’t a typo. You really can get the Bespoke Post Weekender Box for just $45 (when you sign up for Bespoke Post, that is). In all seriousness, why on Earth wouldn’t you want to sign up for Bespoke Post when the result is a bag like the weekender shown here? Available in a range of colors and made from what the brand calls “thick and capable canvas,” it’s the type of bag that’ll only get better with age — and I’m sure you’ll reach for it time and again. Yes indeed, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box might be the smartest purchase you’ll make this summer.

Nautica

#4. Topo Designs Mountain Duffel — $229

The Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is all business — sleek, no-nonsense and definitely very functional.

If you consider yourself a guy who favors more minimal, functional style and performance rather than bright, loud colors when shopping for a stylish weekender bag, the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel is the bag for you. It’s water-resistant right down to the YKK zippers, and it offers handy design touches like a padded base and side panels (all the better to keep your gear safe). In a sleek black color, it’s a low-key way to upgrade your weekender bag — it’s more than ready for camping trips, hikes or day trips.

#5. Filson Small Duffel — $297

Filson

A richly crafted, durable and timeless bag from Filson — that’s all you can ask for, really.

Leave it to the lauded gear makers at Filson to continually deliver on classic pieces that stand the test of time. While not quite as large in size as some of the other options on this list, the Filson Small Duffel is every bit as deserving of a spot here. It starts with the brand’s attention to detail and namely, Filson‘s own rugged, functional, abrasion-resistant twill. Other helpful design touches — such as the tough bridle leather straps and solid brass zipper — help make this bag an investment-worthy classic.
Ben Sherman

Honorable Mention: Bradley Mountain Utility Bag — $159

A carryall that can also serve as a weekender bag — that’s the way it’s done, folks.

There are simply far too many options out there in terms of stylish weekender bags to end this list at just five. It was a tough call, but the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag just barely missed the cut here (Editor’s note: Catch a full write-up on this bag in our Style Pick of the Week series). Able to be fashioned into a carryall for just about anything you can think of — including your favorite summer gear — the Utility Bag is also the type of bag that could reliably haul enough clothes for a weekend away.  The Bradley Mountain Utility Bag features rugged good looks and the sort of durability that you only get from using a custom oiled and waxed leather construction. That is to say, it’s a one-of-a-kind bag that you need in your summer travel arsenal … now.

END. Clothing

In summary: You need — like, need — at least one of the best men’s weekender bags in your rotation for the months ahead. Whether you reach for a two-in-one bag like the Bradley Mountain Utility Bag or the handsome, durable  Large Sport Carryall from Billykirk is entirely up to you — either one would be a wise move. And a sturdy weekender bag from a heritage brand like  Filson provides both instantly recognizable looks and classic style. If that’s not your cup of tea, you can’t go wrong with a minimally designed number like the Topo Designs Mountain Duffel. And in terms of looks, quality and affordability? Well, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box is a surefire winner, available in a diverse range of colors and geared to go anywhere you can dream up. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the best weekender bags below — and of course, I’m reachable at all hours on The Style Guide Facebook page.

Thanks for reading — and stay stylish!

Style Pick of the Week: Bespoke Post Weekender Box

Bespoke Post Weekender Box

Available in a plethora of colors, the Weekender Box is likely the best value on the market when it comes to a durable, handsome and stylish weekender bag.

If you’re still searching for a stylish weekender bag, you’ve come to the right place today. Better yet, if you’re looking for a deal that’s affordable as heck, high-quality and very stylish, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box is the absolute next thing you should purchase … right this instant. What separates the Weekender Box from any regular old weekender bag? In short, it’s the combination of accessibility, affordability and style that you’re not going to find anywhere else on the market. As in — the  Weekender Box  costs at most, $55. Yes, that’s right. How so? If you’re not familiar with Bespoke Post, the company offers a monthly subscription plan that’ll ship boxes of stylish, unique and extremely useful goods to your door, time and again.  What exactly is in these boxes? It could be handsome and functional audio gear, like the Bespoke Post Vibes Box, or it could be something as summer-ready as the Bespoke Post Chill Box (a durable cooler and portable beer glasses). Ultimately, the choice is yours. I’ll tell you this, though: If you sign up for Bespoke Post, you can get boxes for just $45. In my years of menswear writing (and avidly shopping Bespoke Post), there’s not a better deal out there. And that’s particularly the case when it comes to the  Weekender Box. Seriously … a durable weekender bag for just $45? It’s true, and it’s got the quality specs to give you some great bang for your buck.

Greats
Available in a plethora of colors — I personally like the handsome Olive option the most — the Weekender Box is the kind of bag it can take a while to find. After all, the Bespoke Post Weekender Box is functional, affordable and great-looking. It’s a custom design made by Bespoke Post, and it features a sturdy canvas exterior that’ll age  nicely the more you use it. If I were you, I’d certainly use this thing as much as I could — from a summer road trip to a stylish beach getaway, it’s certainly got plenty of room to handle everything on your menswear shopping list.

The cotton webbing shoulder strap on this particular weekend bag should prove durable and sturdy, giving you more than enough room to pack it full of everything from your favorite summer sneakers to slim chinos and perhaps … a slim chambray shirt to round things out? And that’s another bonus when it comes to the Bespoke Post Weekender Box — it’ll look as great as the gear you pack inside, what with a versatile color and simple-yet-rich leather accents. With plenty of summer travel on the horizon, I wouldn’t wait one more second to order the Weekender Box — are you with me? Let me know if you plan to buy it over on Twitter. Happy shopping and safe travels out there!

The Swim Suit: Onia Charles Trunks — $77.98 OR Penfield Seal Swim Shorts — $65

Two colorways, two different brands and two fairly agreeable prices — stylish summer swimwear is here.

Let’s start things off with what’s most important — shall we? Two options here, both stylish, functional and no-frills when it comes to the fit,  details and colors. These are trunks that don’t cry out for attention — I’m partial to the Onia Charles Trunks. Either one will work with a slim T-shirt and slip-on sneakers, and you can throw on a classic ballcap with ease, too. Either option is also fair in terms of price. When it comes to quality, the Onia Charles Trunks or the Penfield Seal Swim Shorts aren’t the sort of swim trunks that can be found in a bargain bin — and that’s quite the positive for you.

The Essential: Finisterre Beach Towel — $44.98
Finisterre Beach Towel

A good-looking beach towel? Who knew?

Before we get to the rest of the essential summer gear you need, how about we knock out one crucial item early on? It can be a bit of a search to find a quality, well-made and stylish beach towel. And if you hadn’t yet thought that a beach towel needed to look nice, well … consider yourself on notice. The Finisterre Beach Towel features a no-fuss pattern and a neutral color — both underrated qualities in a sea of bright, bright towels.

The Bag: W&P Design Cocktail Tote $127.98

A grab-and-go bag finished with stylish details and enough durability to make it beach-ready.

So, you’ve got your remarkably stylish beach towel and swim trunks all set. Before we go any further, let’s sort out how you’ll be hauling your everyday carry — from your classic summer sneakers to your favorite sunglasses. You just might want to make the W&P Design Cocktail Tote your bag of choice. It’ll provide durability and stylish looks — and it won’t look out of place slung over your shoulder when grabbing a post-beach beer. Speaking of beer — if you’re looking for a durable beach cooler, stick around until the end of this post.
The Shirt: Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Tee — $38 OR Flint and Tinder Slub Henley in Pewter — $45

Buy one, buy both … wear one, wear both. It’s up to you, but these stylish Flint and Tinder tees will have you all set for beach time.

We’re giving you two simple, subtly stylish and very well-made summer T-shirt options from the fine folks at Flint and Tinder. As it were, you could pick up both tees and be covered for two different style scenarios. Throw on the Flint and Tinder Supima AirKnit Tee to head to the beach in the first part of the day, and then keep the breathable Flint and Tinder Slub Henley — a former Style Pick of the Week entry — in your bag if it gets breezy or chilly during that beach bonfire. Which brings us to our next point …

The Light Sweater: Finisterre Newlyn Crew — $99.98

Finisterre

When the temperature drops, this is the lightweight sweater to wear.

If indeed it gets too breezy or chilly on the beach or on a boat, you need to be adequately prepared. It’s all too easy to resort to tossing on a ratty old crewneck or a logo sweater. And yet, we should likely all aspire to look a little bit better in every situation. That’s where the indigo-dyed, French Terry cotton Finisterre Newlyn Crew finds its way into your bag. Functionally minded, made for anything and built with handy storage pockets, it’s a perfect go-to after a post-morning surf or …. a post-evening beer.

The Footwear: Hari Mari x Nokona Leather Flip-Flops — $110 OR SeaVees Hermosa Plimsoll Standard — $78

It’s your call as to whether you go for sandals or sneakers — either should perform reliably and stylishly.

We’re once again giving you two options that could both feasibly work for a stylish day at the beach.  If you’re looking for a supremely easy-to-wear pair of premium leather flip-flops, the Hari Mari x Nokona collaboration has you all squared away. These handsome flip-flops are crafted with baseball leather for a look that’s unlike any pair of sandals on the market. If you’re more of a sneakerhead, reach for the subtly stylish, classic SeaVees Hermosa Plimsoll Standard. They’re arguably a pair of summer sneakers you should already own — trust me.

The Sunglasses: J. Crew Syd Sunglasses, $118 OR Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, $99.98

Summer sunglasses

Pick a pair, any pair. The Norton Point Charlie 014 is in a close race against the J. Crew Syd when it comes to great looks.

In sticking with our focus on affordable men’s style, I bring you two options for stylish summer sunglasses that won’t break the bank — and they won’t skimp on any style points, either. J. Crew as a retailer has certainly seen better days — the good old days of classic chambray shirts on every corner might be behind us. And yet… the Syd Sunglasses are an ideal pair of laidback sunglasses. The same can be said for the classic, casual Norton Point Charlie 014 Sunglasses, available for just under $100. Either will sort out your summer beach ensemble quite nicely.

The Hat: Ebbets Field Flannels For J. Crew Ballcap — $49.50

A well-made, affordable and vintage-inspired hat for summer.

We’ve all got that trusty hat we always reach for when stepping out of the house on casual days, right?  This head-turning Ebbets Field Flannels for J. Crew cap channels vintage style with the sort of easygoing design that should make it a beach bag mainstay. In a neutral and versatile color, you’d do well to throw it in your bag for later — it’ll be the coolest hat at the beach.

The Watch: Aulta Acuatico Automatic — $235 OR Deep Blue Master 1000 Dive Watch — $219.98

Two rough-and-tumble watches geared for beach exploration.

When it comes to rugged watches, I sure hope you like options. Wearing a watch to the beach can be a losing cause — unless you’re wearing the right watch, that is. Leave your stylish leather watch at home and break out one of these bad boys if you want rugged functionality. In particular, the simply designed yet sporty and tough Aulta Acuatico is surf-inspired and yet sleek thanks to the black-on-black color combo. And the Deep Blue Master 1000 … don’t even get me started on how perfect this beastly timepiece is for summer, what with tough construction and rugged design.

Nautica

The Cooler: Bespoke Post Chill Box — $45

Two pint glasses and a durable cooler — what’s not to like? Bring it to the beach, without a doubt.

While we gave you plenty of options in the way of durable watches and stylish swim trunks, there’s really only one cooler you need to buy for the beach. That, my friends, would be the Bespoke Post Chill Box. It’s coming at ya courtesy of the great Bespoke Post team, and it’s packed with all the goods for a great beach day. The Chill Box includes a functional and effective cooler from Hudson Sutler — made in America — along with two pint glasses, ideal for knocking back a couple cold ones. Oh, and when you sign up for Bespoke Post? Well, my friends … you get a nice discount on the Chill Box. Save a brew for me, will ya?

Alright, you tell me — did I do enough of thorough job in the way of stylish summer gear for the beach? I hope this roundup was helpful for ya. If you start out your day right — by putting on some stylish swim trunks — it’s tough to go wrong from there. Grabbing handy everyday carry pieces like the W&P Design Cocktail Tote and the underrated Finisterre Beach Towel are also going to help your day get started on the right foot. Oh, and summer footwear for the beach should be easy with either the Hari Mari x Nokona collaboration or a pair of equally summer-friendly classic SeaVees sneakers. On the watch front, you should undoubtedly pack and wear a durable timepiece that can stand up to some surf and some sun.  Either the Aulta Acuatico or the Deep Blue Master 1000 you have you set up for summer beach adventures nicely. It certainly wouldn’t be a beach day without a vintage ballcap, a stylish Flint and Tinder T-shirt and — perhaps most critically — the Bespoke Post Chill Box. Do you have your shopping list all filled out? Good. Go get to it, and then hit the beach — I’ll see you out there!

The Friday Read: Shinola, Pitti Uomo and New Music by The Killers

This week, I’ve found myself looking back — and looking forward — quite a bit.  I’ve been looking back on an incredible mini-trip to Philadelphia and New Jersey to see The Killers about two weeks ago now, and I’ve also been looking back on a great family wedding weekend in Charleston. Both trips brought amazing memories, a dash of excellent #menswear and hearty helpings of craft beer (and in the case of my Jersey trip, stunning live tunes!).

I’m also looking forward to a few other momentous events coming up, including a holiday weekend in NYC surrounding the Fourth of July, plus an exciting month of live music (including a mid-July show by one of my all-time favorite bands, The Naked and Famous!). In the meantime, you can be sure we’ll be talking plenty of men’s style news on the site, from American-made denim to the best shorts to buy for summer and the best new men’s gear to buy now— and plenty more! If that’s of interest, I’d say you should definitely stick around. Before we get to that though, we’ve got a laidback weekend in the Big Apple coming up, and a full rundown of the week in #menswear to kick it off — per usual, as it were! Follow me on Instagram to keep up with the latest, and have a drink on me tonight.

Beckett Simonon

Two distinctly different shoe options available for pre-order from an excellent retailer.

  • Let’s talk summer wedding style as mentioned above — what’s your dress shoe situation like? If you’ve got some time to plan ahead, the fine folks of Beckett Simonon can surely sort you out, and quite handsomely. The company’s well-done pre-ordering process — one that updates you every step of the way via E-mail, from production to shipping — is definitely quite neat. Of course, you might know Beckett Simonon from a Style Pick of the Week entry on the terrific Cole Bomber Jacket on this site, but the brand is so much more.  Perhaps you’re familiar with the insanely cool-looking Morgen Trainer as seen above? And from the handsome Dean Oxford in Brown Leather to a sharp and useful collection of three Italian leather belts, the company’s fine craft is evident throughout the entire process. Again, if you’ve got some time to plan ahead, pre-order one (or several?) pairs of the brand’s stylish men’s dress shoes and be prepared to take that late summer wedding by storm.
  • In retail news, one of my favorite purveyors of stylish leather watches, Shinola, just opened what should be an incredible, well-appointed retail space in chic SoHo here in NYC. Swing by if you’re in the Big Apple — you can find this shop in addition to the new Shinola Brooklyn shop and the brand’s handsome flagship in Tribeca. Happy shopping! be
  • We’re at it again — the three-ring circus that is the traveling band of menswear shows (kidding, kidding) is starting up again, this time at the world’s largest menswear fair, Pitti Uomo. As always, it’s brought out its fair share of well-dressed guys and … overly dressed guys. See the best-dressed guys at Pitt Uomo here.
  • Among other menswear developments, I’m particularly excited about a new series launched recently on the blog — it’s called The List, and it’s a rundown of great gear and essentially, the best menswear to buy now. Our first List included a plethora of great picks, from stylish Chelsea boots to a handsome leather watch and summer drinking essentials from my good pals at Bespoke Post. I’m very much looking forward to continuing the series, and I hope you’re looking forward to reading it.
  • Let’s start to wrap things up with some music — agreed? The Killers — a stunning, soul-stirring and ridiculously excellent live band  — released their new single, “The Man” late last week. It was fitting coming off of my weekend trip to New Jersey to see them play! Have you heard it yet? It’s a groovy, heavy, funky track that might fit in more readily with Mr. Brandon Flowers’ solo work … and yet, it’s got me as excited as ever to hear their new album, “Wonderful, Wonderful.”
  • Now, I’m moreso a proponent of stylish summer sneakers, but that didn’t stop me from writing about the best sandals for men over at one of my favorite style sites, GearMoose — they’re definitely a summer style essential if you’re on the beach or the boardwalk. Shop on!
    Greats
In short order, that’s going to wrap up today’s Friday Read — are you ready for the weekend yet? I’m ready to kick back, relax and enjoy a nice, cold beer (or an iced coffee). Catch me tomorrow for our regularly scheduled Style Pick of the Week, and we’ll see you around!

If you need an upgrade in that department, we’ll get you sorted out in no time today. And if you start by taking a look at your swimwear, you’ll be set when it comes to what to wear to the beach this summer. Specifically, you’re going to want to reach for a pair of swim trunks that fit more like your favorite pair of chino shorts. Look for a clean, not baggy, fit — one that hits above the knee, namely. Although there are many iterations — from thigh-baring numbers to longer board shorts — we’re focusing on picks that generally hit the sweet spot today. Crucially, feel free to inject a bit of color and pattern into your ensemble. Reach for a stylish summer shirt that can go from beach to boardwalk — like the Criquet Slim-Fit Player’s Shirt — and perhaps slip on a pair of SeaVees sneakers to top it all off. It’s all in a day’s work, and I’m confident you’re going to like the picks we’ve sorted out for ya below. After all, the right swimsuit can be worn with just about any casual gear you can dream up. #1. Finisterre Talland Beach Short — $84.98

Finisterre

Retro-leaning stripes, a clean fit and sharp style — perfect for summer.

Yes indeed, the brand that makes your favorite pair of chinos can make a heck of a pair of swim trunks, as well. Finisterre focuses on functionality merged with just a bit of fashion-forward edge — that’s what makes the colorful, striped Talland Beach Shorts a worthy (and premium) pick-up. You get retro style without veering into full-on lifeguard territory and you get the added benefits of quick-drying, UV-resistant functionality. Snap up the Talland Beach Shorts before your next beach trip, will ya?

Oxfords under $50 CAD_728x90

#2. Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk — $69.98

Bather Trunk Co.

An eye-popping print and unique, quick-drying fabric are but two positive design features on these trunks.

Let’s keep the color and pattern going here with the Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk  an ideal addition to your summer swimwear rotation. For quite the solid price, you get a pair of swim trunks that are anything but ordinary. With a 6.5-inch inseam — a length nearly mimics the cut of most chino shorts — you’re looking at easygoing style that’ll stand out on a beach full of black, knee-length swimsuits. The waxed cotton drawstring and quick-drying polyester shell are also upgrades over your standard pair of swim trunks — not too shabby.

#3. United By Blue Stillwater Boardshorts — $68

United By Blue

A different-than-expected pattern and cool, easygoing four-way stretch.

If you want swim trunks with a longer cut and yet a tailored fit and eye-catching style, United By Blue is the place to go — and the Stillwater Boardshorts are the trunks to buy. Particularly useful if you’re catching some waves or doing a bit of waterfall hiking (or poolside beer-sipping), the pattern is one-of-a-kind and the material is injected with four-way stretch for easy wear. Plus, every purchase of the Stillwater Boardshorts helps remove one pound of trash from oceans and waterways — what gets better than that?

Greats

#4. Birdwell Beach Britches for Todd Snyder 311 Boardshorts — $138

A recent collab from a great American menswear designer and a great American menswear brand.

Leave it to Mr. Todd Snyder to knock it out of the park when it comes to everything from suits to stylish pocket tees to … well, swimwear. The designer’s recent collaboration with heritage California surf brand Birdwell Beach Britches takes a classic, hand-stitched silhouette and updates with New York-centric colorways. That means they’ll work at every pool or beach this summer — you can even wear them to your next summer BBQ. Trust me — I took mine on a Memorial Day weekend trip to Florida, and loved ’em.

#5. Mack Weldon Board Shorts — $98

Mack Weldon

With stretchy fabric, quality materials and the brand’s attention to fit and quality, these new board shorts are a must-buy.

First, Mack Weldon conquered your underwear drawer. Then, they started producing stylish, slim merino T-shirts and other great basics. After that, it was the Mack Weldon Vesper Polo. And now, they’ve just introduced functional, well-fitting and well-made swimwear into their rotation. Made with a quick-drying fabric and available in neat, versatile colors (I’d recommend the Total Eclipse Blue), they should provide tailored beach style for months to come.

If I were you, I’d make sure I got my summer swimwear game sorted out ASAP — and I hope the picks on this list do prove helpful in that regard. From the retro striped pattern and bold color of the Talland Beach Shorts to the eye-catching sensibility of the Stillwater Boardshorts and the cool, versatile pattern on the Bather Trunk Co. Surf Trunk , I’d  bet you’ll be the best-dressed guy on the beach (particularly if throw on something as wearable as a slim chambray shirt with your trunks. Picks from Todd Snyder and Mack Weldon are also nothing to sneeze at — with neutral colorways and reliable fits, those are two premium swimsuits worth buying. What are your must-haves for the beach this year? And which pair of the above stylish swim trunks will you be picking up?

Let me know over on Twitter. Until then — thanks for reading!
