The Friday Read: New York Fashion Week, Sunlit Youth and Fall Style Wishes

Editor’s note: Expect these posts once a week on Fridays — consider this a jumpstart on reading for your weekend downtime. Expect a mix of style and non-style content. For more entries, click here.  

As every week draws to a close, it’s pretty fun to carve out some time to write these posts — sometimes, that time is pretty short (those Effortless Gent features don’t write themselves), and other times, there’s a bit more room for introspection. I often like to put on some music as I write, and for about the past week, that’s consisted of “Sunlit Youth,” the fantastic new album from the fantastic indie rock band Local Natives. But what’s that got to do with menswear, you might ask? Well, those guys dress in laidback, minimal California cool garb, for one (wink, wink). And number two — well, it’s just a plain beautiful record, and it’s got me looking forward to a Northeast trip to see their Providence show, wherein we’ll have a full travel style post next month. See, there’s the tie-in! At any rate, records like that are works of art, and worth your time, too — much like some excellent menswear, yes? And it’s music that’s so far colored my week — for the better, by far (personal favorites include the soaring “Past Lives,” the hopeful and lilting “Coins” and the determined drive of tracks like “Psycho Lovers” and “Mother Emanuel”). But again, I’m just one guy. If you fancy spinning that record while you catch up on the below men’s style stories, give it a go. I guarantee it’ll be a perfect start to your weekend.

  • With a new season comes the chance to buy and try out some new menswear — why not start with something supremely stylish, like this standout double-breasted camel wool suit from Banana Republic?   • While we’re out here talking about the change in seasons, the folks at Taylor Stitch are making gear to suit your needs for now and beyond.   • Elsewhere in NYC, it was New York Fashion Week, which did feature a decent helping of men’s style in addition to dozens upon dozens (upon dozens) of women’s fashion shows — for one, the J. Crew Spring 2017 menswear presentation did a fine job at showcasing what the brand does best, which would  be breezy, wearable clothes for the modern man.

#OOTD: The Best Way to Wear A Henley This Fall

So it’s not exactly the middle of summer anymore, is it? That’s a strange sensation if you’ve been used to dressing for the heat or packing up stylish beach gear. But if  you’re anything like this #menswear writer, you relish the chance to dress for seasonal transitions and break out some of your favorite seasonal style staples. We’re talking pieces that are rugged and refined, ready for casual wear or able to be worn with a bit more tailored style in mind. And in the case of this week’s #OOTD, we’re looking at an outstanding piece for a seasonal transition — the ever-reliable slim long-sleeve henley.  With its athletic-minded origins and rugged good looks, a great henley certainly works in the summer as well as the in-between period between summer and fall. But particularly when it’s made with marled fabric and plenty of quality and comfort, it’s the ideal early (and middle, and late) fall style piece — think of the below #OOTD as a weekend workhorse look. Best men's henleys for fall

Just one way — but perhaps, the best way — to wear a henley this fall.

The Henley: Flint & Tinder Marled Long-Sleeve Henley, $62  — So, the henley shown here is a bit more expensive than you might be used to paying for a basic layering piece. But the quality, fit and styling potential is top-notch, and given the fact that it’s part of a slew of new additions to the Flint & Tinder product line, you should definitely pick up this slim henley.

The Coat: Old Navy Canvas Coat, $69.94 — It might initially be too hot to wear a canvas coat atop that henley, but know that when it gets slightly chilly and you need a crisp top layer, this rugged canvas coat is the perfect finishing touch.

Are you ready for some fall weather yet? Hopefully so. If you’ve got a weekly style rotation down, there’s a good chance you might still be missing an item or two — particularly on your wrist. Those small finishing details can sometimes be the hardest to pin down, but once you do — there’s no going back. Now, your author absolutely loves a sharp, stylish timepiece, but sometimes, it can be tough to find a watch that does both. Particularly if you’re working on building out a watch collection, it can be hard work to find one that mixes a touch of refinement with casual style. Well, my fellow #menswear fans — those days are over, thanks to the excellent folks at Jack Mason. The Texas-based brand takes a nuanced approach to crafting stylish watches — the brand’s Texas roots add a touch of Americana to every product — and I’m very glad indeed I stumbled upon them at Liberty Fairs in Las Vegas earlier this summer. I’ve had the chance to check out the brand’s handiwork over the past few weeks — including during a very recent Labor Day weekend road trip — and that brings us here today. Specifically, we’re talking today about the Nautical 3-Hand Watch, a stunner of a timepiece that merges texture (the perlon strap), functionality (a given) and sharp style. Now, the timepiece seen at the top of the page is a sharp play on the style in a heightened blue, but the slightly more casual black version as sold by the fine folks at Huckberry would definitely be a stylish pick-up., too. Why’s that? Well, as we talked before, it nicely blends the look of a dress watch with the casual ease of your new favorite weekend watch — the woven perlon strap and the sporty dial just play well off one another, and that makes it a great option to pair with laidback-yet-sharp style staples, like a crisp white Oxford and rich garment-dyed chinos (as seen at the top of the page; in fact, head to my Instagram to get more watch-centric styling tips — will ya?).

It’s not often that you find watches that manage to look distinctive yet subtle, yet the Nautical 3-Hand Watch is that very timepiece. The 42mm case diameter is just about the right size for most of us fellas, and that makes it a bit more substantial and easier to wear than a slimmer dress watch. And for under $200, you’re essentially getting multiple watches — the easily interchangeable woven strap could be swapped out very quickly for another NATO strap or perhaps a rich Horween leather strap. That kind of versatility is important when watch shopping, and it should make it easier to wear with everything from a sharp business-casual look to a laidback outfit put together with bar-hopping in mind (seriously, you’ve gotta tell time on a bar crawl somehow).  And lest you think the woven strap and nautical dial  of the Nautical 3-Hand Watch make it a timepiece that only works in spring and summer, think again. The perlon strap adds just enough texture to make this timepiece a fall (and potentially) winter workhorse. Again, that versatility and functionality simply can’t be beat. If that’s a goal of yours when watch shopping — as it should be — your search might be over (for now, that is).

Style Suggestion: How to Dress for Football Season

Sometimes, you can feel it in the air before you actually see it — maybe you bolt out of bed on a Saturday morning thinking it’s game day (just me?), or get your old (or current) school fight song stuck in your head one day. It’s nearly back … football season, folks. The fall and the start of football season has always been one of my favorite times of year — growing up about fifteen minutes from the campus of Michigan State University turned me into a football fanatic at a very young age. That dedication only continued through college; heck, you could hear the roar of the crowd at Spartan Stadium from my college house. So as the calendar rolls toward fall once again, I’m focused on getting back to see my beloved Spartans — and I’m focused a little bit more on upping my #menswear game for the occasion than when I was in school. Now, that goes for you pro football fans, too — but sadly, the Detroit Lions were never anything to write home about. As we always talk about at ye olde Style Guide, there are plenty of ways to get dressed with style upgrades in mind, and that goes for situations that might seem more casual or mundane. Just as with watching the Olympics or heading to a bar crawl, dressing for a football game is definitely there. From your garb up top to your everyday carry, you might be surprised at how many brands are approaching sports-related activities with neat stylistic touches in mind. First things first — it’s probably not all that cold for any of us at the moment, so this layer might stay in the closet for a while. But should you splurge a little on this Flint & Tinder Henley, know that you’re getting a brand-new offering from a brand that’s refined the art of making excellent basics in America. Oh, and another plus: It’ll keep you just as warm as a long-sleeve athletic base layer, yet you get bonus style point and no logos in sight. Fancy yourself a college football fan (like yours truly), but tired of wearing standard team fare? Add a dash of vintage style to gameday with a tee that might feel a bit familiar. How’s that? If you recognize the mix of classic heritage and American sportswear in the tee you see above (and the brand’s other styles), you’re onto something — Tailgate Clothing was co-founded by none other than lauded menswear designer Todd Snyder. Looking for yet another way to differentiate yourself from the pack? Whereas some other folks might reach for baggy, distressed denim — maybe featuring a bootcut — a pair of crisp, clean and simple dark denim is the way to go here. Mott & Bow’s Norfolk Raw Denim was launched late last year as the brand’s first foray into raw denim, and this writer’s pair has broken in very nicely. Contrary to what you might think, this denim isn’t overly heavy, and doesn’t wear too stiff right out of the box. That means they’d be a solid pick to wear now, and keep on wearing if (or when) it gets cold out. Like the above henley, they can also function during your 9-to-5. Not bad at all, yeah?

If that price catches you by surprise initially, not to worry — the Barry Chukka is nearly a four-season pair of footwear that packs in waterproof protection with a versatile  silhouette. As far as chukka boots go, they’ve got the potential to be worn in the heat of September (thanks to the lightweight crepe sole) and deep into tailgating season this November. Then, you can break them back out in the spring. Think of these stylish chukka boots as a decided upgrade over athletic sneakers — they’re sleeker, cleaner, more versatile and ready for just about anything (including post-victory bar-hopping).

Socks aren’t that big of a deal, right? Wrong. If you want a pair that’s high-quality enough to be worn for long periods of time on your feet week after week, you want these socks. And if you’re on the hunt for a pair that’s both affordable and long-lasting? You want these socks. The navy color is simple and straightforward — no zany colors or patterns here, so the socks won’t distract from your T-shirt. Plus, they’re definitely made with more care than a pair of garish team socks, and I’d bet those results will show up on the scoreboard, too (wink, wink).

Now, if wearing both a team watch and a team T-shirt feels a bit like overkill, you could always reach for a rugged dive watch. But know that the way Jack Mason makes its collegiate watches, these aren’t flimsy or unrefined by any means. Essentially, styles like the Blackout Silicone Strap Watch you see here are just tough watches made for the everyday and spruced up with the logo of your favorite school. When you look at that way, it’s tough not to buy into this unique, well, style upgrade. Even the Striped NATO Strap Watch isn’t too gaudy — heck, the variety of striped NATO straps offered with Jack Mason’s other collegiate watches would work well with other casual timepieces in your rotation.

If we’re being honest, most folks probably aren’t giving a second thought to what they were to the game besides an athletic jersey, so putting some thought into a good-quality, versatile belt might not mean much at a tailgate. But if you’re on a mission to out-dress that pesky Michigan fan (as we all should be), then a good belt is just the type of thing to spend a little time on. Crucially, this J. Crew suede belt falls in the same color family as the SWIMS chukka boots seen above, and it’s the perfect color and texture to wear with other fall business-casual outfits the rest of the week. It doesn’t exactly match up in terms of color with the watch, but as we’re mixing a rubber watch and a leather belt, matching isn’t of the utmost importance. Now, catching the snap — that’s much more important.

Again, a  ballcap is one of those things most of us throw on and don’t think about. And there are certainly ways to support your team and nod toward the ol’ ballgame without throwing on a coach’s headset. A simple, monochrome ballcap with vintage-inspired roots (it’s made by the folks at Ebbets Field Flannels) is a step in the right direction if you can’t part with your old college ballcap. Believe me, this writer loves a good hat as much as the next guy. This one is also the kind of cap you can throw on to run a few errands on a weekend morning — you know, things like picking up a six-pack (or three) before your tailgate.

The Must-Have: Brothers Leather Supply Co. C.W. Growler Bag — $75

OK, so perhaps a growler bag isn’t a must-have (particularly if you’re not the type to imbibe). But if you enjoy a great craft brew — perhaps from a fine brewery near the Grand Rapids shop of Brothers Leather — then this growler is something you oughta pick up. It’s made from full-grain finished Vachetta tanned leather, which is enough to boggle your fellow tailgate-goer before you even pour them a beer. The 36-inch strap is a functional touch for lugging this thing around — the only thing missing is some stellar craft beer.

Even though it might seem a bit tedious to put that extra bit of effort into your appearance on a weekend day, it definitely pays off. It’s something I still struggle with from time to time, but finding the right pieces can make the experience a heck of a lot better. The search for that perfectly worn vintage tee hopefully is a bit easier now after checking out Tailgate Clothing, and stylish everyday carry pieces like an upgrade team watch and a vintage ballcap are subtle, sporty-yet-stylish ways to prep for the occasion. Crucially, waterproof nubuck chukka boots and slim, dark denim are great building blocks for any outfit. And if you pack well (I.e. #OOTD: How to Dress for A Rock Concert

Chances are, we’ve all got certain style scenarios throughout the week we have to tackle — be it dressing for a laidback office or a laidback summer weekend, there’s a multitude of conundrums (and opportunities!) to navigate in any given week. If you enjoy live music — as I very much do — you might also find yourself attending a show or two … or three. Heck, from the 2016 Panorama music festival to Governors Ball to an upstate trip to see Lucius, I love it all, and I get out and about to shows quite a bit. If you read this blog, you certainly know that; maybe you’ve even tackled a similar scenario, such as how to dress for a summer music festival. However, non-festival settings are a different animal entirely. We’re usually talking an indoor venue, a more compact crowd, and possibly time spent waiting in line outside. So, what are you going to wear? And namely, what’s a combination that might hold up alright at the office and then heading to the show itself? This is one of the essential questions in life (wink, wink) and it’s the one we’re going to answer below. As yours truly likes to drive home, looking for ways to improve — and maintain — your style comes down to always seizing the chance to do a little bit extra when it comes to getting dressed. That’s where style upgrades come into play, even off the clock. The Jacket: Abercrombie & Fitch M-65 Military Jacket, $150 –The (somewhat) new and very improved Abercrombie & Fitch is keeping that roll going into the fall season with pieces like this timeless, sharp and versatile field jacket. It works just as well over a knit tie with a blue Oxford as it does with this outfit’s other pieces.

The Shirt: Buck Mason Short-Sleeve Chambray Shirt, $108 — If you’ve kept your eyes peeled, you’ve seen this Buck Mason short-sleeve chambray shirt as part of this site’s Style Pick of the Week series. It’s an essential done the right way, and the short sleeves will keep you cooler even underneath the jacket.

As you can see in the #OOTD above, the small style details matter, from the cut of your shirt to the color of your socks — and they can be merged into one functional outfit that’s fit for something as unique as a rock concert. Those suede Chelsea boots that you might pair with a business-casual look will fit right in as you jockey for a front-row spot (or a spot at the bar). Pieces like a navy military jacket and a chambray shirt are multi-season essentials that work particularly well for transitioning from location to location — indoors or outdoors. The military jacket is rugged yet sharp when paired up with that crisp blue short-sleeve chambray shirt. And while black denim might feel a touch rebellious, a clean wash in a dark color is certainly as concert-ready  as durable pair of inky blue denim. Lastly, that durable watch and slim wallet are nice additions to your daily haul any day of the week. Style Guide Summer: A Labor Day weekend out East

It’s no surprise that given how much I’ve been on the road in the past month, the summer came to quite the quick end. But that didn’t stop me from squeezing in one last long weekend of fun before summer (technically) drew to a close. Just a few days after I returned from a summer vacation in Florida, I set my sights on having some fun over the long holiday weekend — as I did for a Memorial Day weekend road trip to kick off the summer. Perhaps you also hit the road, if only for a day or two. That was the case for me, as I took full advantage of a day off on Monday and used the rest of the weekend to hit up everything from my favorite #menswear shops in NYC to the stylish, up-and-coming locale of Asbury Park (all the way down in New Jersey) on a fine September Saturday. And lest we forget, it was a boisterous opening weekend in college football — and that brought with it the chance to cheer on my Michigan State Spartans in style (as you can see below). The weekend started slightly earlier than normal thanks to my day job’s advantageous Summer Friday policy — gotta love a few extra hours off. That meant I had plenty of time to rest up for a night of cheering on my alma mater, Michigan State, as they kicked off what should be an excellent college football season with a solid (not stellar) win against Furman. I had some help from my friends at Tailgate Clothing and Jack Mason, who were kind enough to hook me up with team-appropriate gear for the occasion. Both available for great deals, I’d seriously recommend the excellent Michigan State Spartans T-shirt and the Blackout Silicone Strap Watch seen above if you happen to be a Spartan fan — and if not, either brand stocks a bevy of stylish college gear made with everyday good looks in mind. I complemented those new favorites with another style staple, my reliable-as-ever Mott & Bow Slim Mercer Light Denim; it’s a perfect change of pace from trusty dark denim. On the footwear front, the SeaVees Army Issue Sneaker (sold out in White but available in a similarly neutral Olive) was comfortable, effective and appropriate in terms of color (Go White, am I right?). Although I’ll have to add a few layers as the weather gets colder, I can tell my team watch and vintage-inspired tee will provide ample school spirit — and style — all throughout the season.

An outstanding Spartan victory on Friday night paved the way for an outstanding start to the long weekend. For me, that meant a Saturday morning train ride out to the bustling, up-and-coming locale of Asbury Park, an oceanfront New Jersey haven a little over an hour from New York City.  Known for a burgeoning arts scene and prime beach vistas mixed with modern touches — like the newly opened Asbury Hotel — the city has done a nice job mixing the eclectic and the modern. That goes for a classic-yet-refined boardwalk, plus establishments like Dark City Brewing Company and more established locales like one-of-a-kind bar Johnny Mac (spoiler alert — those were two of my stops on the trip). As the day called for casual style, I met the trip accordingly with pieces built for comfort, movement and good looks.

It was a prime chance to break out a new favorite piece from JACHS NY, a vintage-inspired light wash denim shirt that offered a bit of stylish contrast to my laidback Bridge & Burn Stringer Dune Shorts. Note that the JACHS denim shirt is sold-out, but you can grab a reliable back-up via JackThreads. To combat the chance of rain and some cloudy skies, I threw on a stylish hooded parka from the Masafumi Watanabe for Reef collaboration. I also always appreciate the chance to rock some standout sneakers on trips long and short — my Reebok x JackThreads Daily Classic Nylon Sneakers have proven tremendously comfortable and stylish, and they were the perfect Saturday style pick. Although the day started out cloudy, skies eventually opened up as I explored a quickly developing downtown area (not far from the boardwalk, as it were). From stop to stop, I found that the Scout Wallet from Andar Wallets combined a slim profile with functionality, crucial for traveling light. And my Nautica sunglasses brought bit of retro edge — the navy Wayfarer style seen at the very top of the page is cool, unique and casual — but not too laidback. If you read this blog, you know I love me a great watch, and I certainly didn’t pass up a chance to wear my Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch, either.

Those pieces definitely helped me get around Asbury Park in style, including stops at the aforementioned Dark City Brewing — you can’t go wrong with grabbing a tasty flight, but I’d certainly recommend the Bond Street Brownie, a rich, roasted brown ale. I followed up that stop with a lengthy stroll along the boardwalk and a quick pop-in to check out the stylish and sustainable Asbury Park outpost of United By Blue. The shop itself — and the brand — have definitely done a nice job mixing eco-friendly pieces with durable style .  If you find yourself in need of a quick bite or an iced coffee, you can’t go wrong with a quick trip to High Voltage Coffee, located conveniently down the boardwalk from United By Blue. Although the weather was just a tad cloudy for parts of the day, I still had a heck of a time exploring what’s quickly becoming a haven for arts and culture — refurbished boardwalk buildings adorned with large murals are just one example of those efforts. And for those who like a cold brew with a side of outdoor relaxation, the unique Wonder Bar not too far from the boardwalk offered up a nice chance to soak in some rays, while Johnny Mac featured everything from vintage instruments to old records plastered on its packed walls (in addition to a solid selection of craft beer).

I’ll definitely be back to Asbury Park, but yesterday brought a return to NYC and a relaxing Sunday featuring a little bit of everything. I’m a big fan of my Sunday brunch, as any reader of this blog knows, so I always relish the chance to fight the Brunch Village crowds — especially when it means a stop at one of my favorite Brooklyn spots, Rucola. It’s surrounded by quiet, tree-lined streets and lovely brownstones.  On this particular Sunday, I went for sharp-yet-simple style (if you’ve got to head somewhere special right after brunch — say, to a matinee show — a similar combo might be the way to go). In this instance, that meant my Todd Shelton White Oxford was a crisp base for my ensemble, accented by a slim, stylish and comfortable pair of Dockers Premium Clean Garment-Dyed Khakis. Finding pieces that work in that transitional time between summer and fall is tough, but slim chinos in a rich, fall-ready color (like the Tobacco version seen here) are as good a pick as any. The chinos played nicely off the rich brown Johnston & Murphy Duvall Wingtip, and the entire combo would work well with a few minor adjustments throughout the rest of fall (namely, beneath a shawl cardigan when it’s chilly). Two reliable finishing touches helped me complete a look fit for brunch and Sunday adventures — my Wayfarer-inspired Nautica sunglasses and another Jack Mason timepiece (the Nautical 3-Hand Watch). They provided the perfect mix of refined, laidback style — for Sunday brunch, that combination is the way to go.

With a delicious brunch as fuel for the day, I had more than enough time to take care of some writing for GearMoose and hit up a few of my favorite menswear establishments in Brooklyn, including the terrific lifestyle outpost that is Modern Anthology.  They carry a well-curated assortment of home goods, crisp-and-rugged furniture and essential menswear, plus other odds and ends you didn’t know you needed — give the Web store a look, will you? It’s definitely a favorite haunt in the city, and it made my Sunday all the more enjoyable, as did a stop for a refreshing iced coffee at Absolute Coffee in Boerum Hill — I love me a pit stop for a jolt of caffeine, and I love a rich cold brew even more.

Even after all that weekend activity, my time off is still going — and I certainly planned ahead to enjoy Labor Day in style, starting with my Dockers Premium Wrinkle Slim-Fit Twill Shirt (as featured in this site’s Labor Day style suggestion). In this humble writer’s opinion, that comfortable, casual style carried right on through to my JACHS NY Bowie Fit Stretch Cotton Chino in a four-season shade of grey, plus the terrific, durable and unique Todd Snyder + P.F. Flyers Grounder Hi-Top sneakers.  That particular collaboration is certainly one worth admiring — and buying — for its blend of heritage and modern styling, plus all-around great looks. I complemented the look with the Nautical 3-Hand Watch from Jack Mason — the rich blue dial and Perlon strap create a one-of-a-kind pop of blue that’s still nicely versatile with neutral staples (like grey chinos and a navy shirt, for instance). As to my plans for the day? Well, I’m looking forward to another delicious coffee at Milk & Honey — because old habits die hard. A trip to Prospect Park is likely in order as well — and of course, I’ll be busy reflecting on an outstanding Labor Day weekend in and around New York City, and looking forward to a busy fall season. Style Pick of the Week: Taylor Stitch Crater Shirt

There are brands that almost make it ridiculously easy to get all your shopping done in one place — if you read The Style Guide, you know that Taylor Stitch is definitely one such brand.  It seems that just about anything you need on the #menswear front can be fulfilled by the brand — that goes for things like essential chambray shirting, classic men’s chinos made from durable fabric, and a drool-worthy leather jacket or two, and it’s particularly evident during times best suited to rugged gear (like fall). The Friday Read: Paul Fredrick Deals, New Balance Sneakers and Labor Day Weekend

Can you believe it’s Friday? More importantly, can you believe it’s the Friday before Labor Day weekend? Where did the time go? For this style writer, a lot of this past month has been spent on the road — this particular week, that mean a long, relaxing (and fairly stylish) summer vacation to Florida, including some excellent time spent in the sun and sand. Plus, the trip was capped off by a standout AC/DC concert at the BB&T Center in Fort Lauderdale — I think my hearing is still recovering.  Seriously, though — what a band. You can read much more here, but know that it was worth the early, early flight back to New York the next morning (to say the least). Throughout this past month, it’s also been great to travel back to Michigan for a wedding weekend and a Grand Rapids trip (all the while focused on travel style). I’ve also been really thankful this summer to  check so many items off my to-do list, from an upstate trip to see Lucius, one of my favorite bands, to a standout weekend at Governors Ball and a heck of a Saturday at Panorama. The chance to travel so many neat places, spend so much time with great friends and check out so many cool sights and sounds is one I definitely don’t take for granted — and I hope it’s been a summer of checking things off your to-do list as well (with plenty of highlights, to boot!). But we’re not done yet —  with Labor Day coming up, there are still plenty of chances to dress in style; what else would you expect? Catching some rays: A summer vacation in Florida

It might seem hard to believe, but today ends a whirlwind stretch of 12 out of 17 days on the road for me — yes, that’s right! That included a trip West to Liberty Fairs, plus a wedding weekend in Michigan, all fun in their own way, and all involving some stellar #menswear (if I do say so myself). Given that I’ve grown pretty accustomed to hitting the road as of late, it made my next trip all the more enjoyable; it’s not all that often that I get to head South to visit my family in Florida, but it’s always a special occasion. In this case, I was able to celebrate my mom’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Mom!) and take in a truly epic AC/DC concert with my dad in nearby Fort Lauderdale — but more on that in a second. I was last in Fort Myers in March (a Style Guide spring break, if you will), and this go-round, I was able to bring along a different — yet hopefully just as stylish — set of men’s style essentials for a longer trip (Friday to Wednesday morning, as it were!).

That started, as always, from the ground up. I’ve realized the importance of making sure your small items are both durable and stylish — such is the case with my Herschel Supply Chapter Travel Kit, an easy-to-pack, easy-to-use dopp kit that sheds water (the wide array of colors doesn’t hurt, either). It fit nicely inside my reliable-as-ever Owen & Fred Voyager Waxed Weekender, which actually ended up holding about six days worth of gear (see, that’s versatile dressing — wink, wink). I also packed up a durable Stitchmill Henley and other easily wearable pieces. On a side note — if you’re going to grab one henley, you might want to make it a slim-fitting, made-in-America purchase from Stitchmill. But onto the rest of the trip. As I headed right from the office in NYC to the plane, I took advantage of a very casual Friday and threw on my OLIVERS Capital Shorts and the lightweight, comfortable Stio Divide Polo, both of which provided nice freedom of movement and versatility for moving from work to a flight and dinner. Of course, my Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes were also durable and crisp for a half-day in the office and the resulting flight to Florida, which proved to be longer than expected thanks to some travel delays. The time spent in the air was more than recovered thanks to a few tasty brews at Twin Peaks, brewers of four in-house beers and some excellent pub fare, including the Billionaire Bacon Burger. Friday night done right!

With a busy work week and travel day in the books, it made Saturday all the more enjoyable — it was time for a relaxing beach day with fittingly casual apparel. That meant I threw on the Fourlaps Apparel Dash Tank, because everyone could use a little sun now and then.  I covered the brand in a piece on the best athleisure brands for men, and they’re worth checking out if you want performance-minded apparel that’s a little more bold — and a little less logo-heavy — than your average tank top. It was an easygoing complement to my JackThreads Swim Trunks, which were pretty sharp in a deep navy color. Beach-ready footwear is an essential, and a pair of casual grey sneakers from the Masafumi Watanabe x Reef collaboration were just the ticket, able to stand up to sand & the walk through the parking lot after. Perhaps the most versatile timepiece I brought with me was my Invicta 8926 Pro Diver — I’ve had that thing for about three years now (it even nabbed a spot in this site’s roundup of the best dive watches), and it fit right in underneath the sand & sun. Given the need to transition from situation to situation,  I’d suggest you also grab a versatile, casual-yet-refined dive watch for your next waterfront outing.

For a trip to one of my favorite stops in the Fort Myers area (the excellent Point Ybel Brewing), I also kept it casual. The great thing about those OLIVERS Capital Shorts is that, minus repeated gym sessions, they can hold up to darn near anything (including a repeat wear for an easygoing dinner). My situation up top was also breezy and casual, as it was the prime opportunity to feature a fun vintage printed shirt. A regular (read: Non-vintage) printed short-sleeve shirt is the ideal way to have a bit of fun in the warm weather, and my reliable-as-always Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes worked just fine for grabbing a few pints.  We topped off the night with a stellar dinner at legendary local spot Doc Ford’s — my parents would surely recommend the Yucatan Shrimp.

As one does in Floriday, Sunday provided another lovely opportunity to relax and explore at the same time. That meant a Sunday Funday trip to Punta Gorda and some exploration around the Fishermen’s Village shopping area (complete with a requisite stop at nearby Fat Point Brewing — get the Big Boca Ale to go in a growler, if you get the chance!). We also grabbed a tasty waterfront meal   No trip to a beautiful waterfront locale would be complete without the chance to once again break out those Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes. which are a decidedly sleek upgrade to the typical boat shoe. They offset a new favorite pair of breezy tropical-print linen Todd Snyder shorts (an end-of-season sale pick-up) — they were sufficiently breezy, comfortable and yet stylish. Of course, accessories to fight the sun were also crucial — in this instance, that meant some Nautica sunglasses in a cool, retro-yet-modern (there is such a thing) Clubmaster-style shape. My trusty Tread for Men Traveler Sunscreen helped me fight the sun’s rays — seriously, don’t skip out on that — and although I reached for my Invicta 8926 Pro Diver for some pool time early in the day, my refined Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch — on a NATO strap, no less — was the perfect pick for more time in the Florida heat.

Unlike past trips to Florida, which required a quick turnaround, I had the chance to take a bit more time in and around the city of Fort Myers. That meant some pool time on Monday, and it also meant a chance to hit up downtown Fort Myers outpost The Lodge for a heck of a lunch and some stellar brews. The décor is rustic and alpine-themed, the barbeque is stellar and the selection of regional and national craft beers is on-point (the Cigar City Lager from Tampa is a crisp, easy-drinking upgrade to a Miller Lite, if that’s in your wheelhouse). To meet the occasion in style, I paired my Grayers Breton Stripe Tee (slim-fitting and comfortable) with the Stio Colter Pant, a slightly stretchy chino made from premium Turkish cotton. It moved well, and made it easy to stroll around town post-lunch — particularly when paired up with those trusty Jack Erwin Cooper Boat Shoes and other style essentials, like my Timex x Todd Snyder Mod Watch. When you talk about pieces that mix crisp, modern style with a retro vibe, that timepiece is one of them — as is my trusty Bridge & Burn Flat Wool Cap, which came in handy shield my face from the sun. Despite some rain showers, it was an excellent day capped off by some delicious fried chicken at Sanibel Island hotspot The Pecking Order and a beautiful sunset on the beach.

So a tremendous day on Monday led to one (big) thing on Tuesday — the concert to end all concerts, an absolutely epic AC/DC show. That explains the authentic  band tee (no knock-off designer band merch here!), my reliable Levi’s 505C Denim, (a rock-inspired jean perfect for the show), and some durable leather chukkas. But onto what truly was an explosive night! Say what you will about their music or their consistent (ahem, stubborn) approach to music, but AC/DC were one of the first bands I ever loved — and I love them to this day, personnel changes and all! The show was worth an entire blog post in and of itself, particularly when you snag prime second-row seats, as my dad and I did (I’m going to pause to try & recover some of my hearing now).

From the opening chords of “Rock Or Bust” to a blistering take on “Shoot to Thrill,” a ripping rendition of”Sin City” and the classic “High Voltage” — and every single song in between — Angus Young never stopped moving or peeling off insane riffs. And Axl Rose truly did sing his butt off, too — he’s no Brian Johnson, but he channels both Brian & Bon in one heck of a rock n’roll way (on-stage wardrobe choices aside). Even without Brian in the mix, the band is a sight to behold … they’re perhaps the last great “classic” rock band that tours consistently behind original music, and boy, do they put on a show. Chris Slade has proven an admirable fill-in behind the drum kit for Phil Rudd, and Stevie Young is his uncle Malcolm incarnate, holding down the engine room admirably on rhythm guitar.  I could certainly go on, but suffice to say — Bon Scott would be proud of “the boys.” Next up — the band’s stop at Madison Square Garden in just about two weeks. Needless to say, I’m ready.

Travel style essentials

With all that being said, the trip still seemed to come to an end all too soon — that could’ve been the early wake-up call to get back to NYC on Wednesday, too. It’s now time to power through the work day, and unpack my bag until I travel next. With Labor Day on the way though, I’ve got some stylish adventures planned — I’ll be exploring the buzzed-about town of Asbury Park (that’s New Jersey, folks), and bringing along some stylish essentials (of course). #OOTD: How to Wear a Denim Dress Shirt

Editor’s note: You’ve surely seen this hashtag lots of different places, including on Instagram. But how does that carry over to real life? The #OOTD will take one great item and put together a versatile, stylish outfit around it. Look for past features here. Thanks to Paul Fredrick for partnering with The Style Guide on today’s post and shirt review.

There’s only one way to do business casual — right? Maybe a classic blue Oxford, tan chinos and stylish leather dress shoes? Well, that’s certainly one way to look at it. But the great thing about being into matters of style is that there’s not really one set uniform any more. Now, there are certainly preferred ways to dress (preferably not using Mr. Kanye West as an example) and you definitely need to keep fit and proportion in mind, but there’s room for experimentation. Such is the case with this week’s #OOTD here on The Style Guide. It starts out classically enough — using a button-down collar shirt and grey pants as the outfit’s base, but deviates from there. The denim dress shirt in particular is worth noting. Now that you’ve got that in line, how should you style this shirt? The Shirt: Paul Fredrick Slim-Fit Non-Iron Solid Twill Shirt, $89.50 — Made from textured 100 percent cotton twill that looks just like your favorite pair of dark denim, this shirt is a welcome change of place from a white Oxford or even a lighter blue chambray shirt.

The Jacket: Rogue State Suede Bomber Jacket, $139.99 — How do you mix up a crisp business-casual look even further? With a bomber that’s slick and anything but straightforward. Even if it’s a bit warm now, this jacket should be a fall workhorse.

The Pants: Dockers Jean Cut Slim Fit Pants, $58 — While slim grey chinos would also work here, there’s just something about a denim shirt that calls for a  bit more texture, and these five-pocket pants, inspired by classic denim and cut slim, are just the ticket.

The Sneakers: Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers Grounder Hi-Top in Olive, $130 — The latest iteration of the Todd Snyder x P.F. Flyers collaboration  is the perfect way to trade out brown leather chukka boots for footwear that’s sporty but still outfit-appropriate. Wear them now, wear them on the weekends and look forward to fall.

The Socks: American Trench Textured Herringbone Supima Cotton Socks, $15 — There’s certainly a lot of darker color going on in this outfit, but these rich navy socks complement the olive sneakers, blue twill shirt and brown bomber jacket nicely.
The Watch: Jack Mason Brand Nautical 3-Hand Watch, $157.98 — Jack Mason stylishly merges the sporty, casual and refined in one timepiece inspired by nautical instruments. It’s the ideal addition to an ensemble that’s clean and fast.

The Belt: Maximum Henry Standard 02 Belt, $74.98 — The most “business casual” part of this outfit might be this slim, refined belt. Sizes are limited right now, but you can also find Maximum Henry belts at his Web site.

The Everyday Carry: This Is Ground Leatherback Writer 3, $84.98 — Everyone needs that one everyday carry item that can do it all, and this is the way to go. It holds your smartphone, doubles as a wallet and features a notebook slot and room for all your other odds and ends.
If ever you feel like you might be in a wardrobe rut, take the time to dream up some new outfit combinations, ways that you can use what you’ve already got to your advantage (or heck, enter the Paul Fredrick giveaway as discussed earlier and win some new clothes!). Working high-top sneakers into an office or work outfit might not be  for everyone, but with clean and classic styling potential, it’s worth a shot. And a slim-fitting denim dress shirt is the thinking man’s change of pace in terms of texture and color on the shirting front. Lastly, who couldn’t use a handsome bomber jacket and a sporty-yet-refined watch?
